Hello everyone,
my wife has an One S and is quite happy with it. she has only one gripe. sometimes the phone just cant connect to any wifi network. she noted it after a few days owning the device without using it much on the road, allmost just using internet at our house via wifi when she got a message that her free quota is used up and she will be slowed down till the end of the billing perios.
Sometimes (apparently when away for some time) the phone cant connect to wifi anymore. it does not show the wifi symbol in the notification bar. when i look in the wifi settings its constantly switching between showning the networkname and the encryption details and showing "connecting" every few seconds. because she has used up all her bandwith for this billing period i wantet to give her access to the bandwith of my contract via the wireless hotspot function fo my GNex. here we have the same problem.
when she restarts her phone it immediantly connects to any wifi network she has access to.
after reading a bit i found out about some bug in the one s but as faar as i understand it that leaves the wifi sleeping when not connected for some time.
i tryed the fix about the static ip which looked like it helped, but after a few days we are at the same problem again.
she is happy with the stock sense and her unrooted phone and does not really want to mess that deep with her phone, but she is also not really willing to reboot her device every so often (she had an issue with her old phone, HTC Desire, that also could be fixed with a reboot but she could not stand it and got the one s as a replacement)
is this a know problem with the phone or something i could get fixed from htc? some settings that we could tweek? would a custom rom help? if so is there one as close as possible to the stock rom that fixes it? so if it helps maybe i could unlock her phone and install an "allmost" stock rom so she does not have to handle a totally new enviroment besides sense.
Have you updatet it to the latest official patch, 2.21.401.10?
I believe there has been updates to the radio so maybe it will fix the problem?
the phone is now three weeks old. dont know about that patch. my wife is not here right now so i cant check the phone. was it an OTA update? cuz i dont remember that there was one. or do i have to download it from the htc site?
wife just came back.
cant find any note of a patch on her phone the version of her software is 1.78.401.2
when i check for software updates i just get a message that no new software is aviable.
i also looked at the htc page there i cant find any firmware for the one s. just the htc sync manager.
That is quite old version. And yes the version I mentioned was OTA update. I got it couple weeks ago.
I think there is two explanations why it isn't available to your wife's phone, at least yet. Either its carrier locked or sim locked or whatever it is called in english. Or its the model with the older S3 processor.
How to tell which processor it has? There propably is better programs to look at it, but for example you can find that out with an app called OS Monitor. Now when you open it, go to misc tab and look at the "Scaling Range". If its 384000-1512000 then its the newer S4 model which should have the update available.
Now if the top clock speed is around 1700000 then its the older S3 version.
just checked, its the s4 version.
phone also has no lock of any kind no carrier and no sim lock. its totally free.
it just has a 1&1 (german internet provider) branding. but according to the seller it just has a different start screen and a couple of 1&1 specific apps (that can be uninstalled).
Ok, then I have no idea why it isnt working.
There is this, but I think its too much of an hassle for a update and requires you to root the phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781033
I think you should take it to a service and tell them about the wifi issue. Maybe they can manually update it to the latest version to fix the wifi.

I have had my Galaxy S 4G about 1 month now and I'm a newb to Android. I've not rooted or done anything other than load more apps from the Market to try and learn more about this phone. It is out of the box stock as of 9/2011
My Wifi shows that it is on and logged on to my router at home and when I run the SpeedTest.net app it shows that ping works (though slow) and then the download runs but then times out with a network error.
All I do is toggle off the wifi and then back on again and try it again and suddenly it works fine for some extended time.
I have an I-pod touch that always works along with a laptop that has no issues with the 802.11 g connection from the same chair that I'm sitting in with the phone.
It is an annoyance to keep having to check for "quality of service" issues with an internet connection. You never know when you will have to toggle the service back on again or if you are just looking at a server issue on the other end of the connection
Is this a known problem with either Froyo, Samsung Galaxy or T-Mobile?
My config:
[t959v] = [SGH-T959V]
Firmware version
2.2.1
Kernal Version
2.6.32.9
Build #
Froyo.vuvkd1
Thanks in advance.

Not to my knowledge. I had my SGS4G back in February before the KD1 update and never had the problem. It wouldn't be a T-Mobile issue as, whatever the problem is, is between your phone and the router. So T-Mobile is out of that equation.
Maybe try a factory data reset? Just a thought to see if it helps. I can't think of a good reason it would but it's just an idea. Given that you're not rooted nor running any custom ROMs or firmware I don't want to even think about pointing you down that road.
Have you tried it with more than the 1 router in the house? If it's a problem with wifi in general it could be defective hardware. If it's only with the 1 router then there could be other variables at play (type of router, security on it, & the SGS4G not liking that, etc.)
I'm rambling...but stumped a bit.
Called t_mobile support and once I got to the second level support person she had me stop by a store and get an updated Sim card.
My original card was 7 years old. I really didn't think that would matter, but so far it seems to have done the trick.

Awesome. Glad you got it working.
Yesterday, I upgraded htc sensation to ice cream sandwich. After upgrading, wifi worked for few seconds and after that it stopped working. It's showing disconnected and not scanning the Wifi Routers around. Secondly, after every restart, it's shows that android is upgrading and optimizing the applications.
I have HTC_Asia_WWE HTC_044 Sensation. Any of you guys faced this issue? have you managed to resolve this?
For WIFI you can use this application , i used it and it's working fine with me now

also i have the same problem when restarting the device, and i have a problem with cell broadcast every time i disable it , after restart it's enabled again

I have exactly the same symptom on my Sensation XE - like you Asian sourced, but operating in Qatar. Like you - I know I could root, but would prefer to keep my phone unrooted and stock for the time being.
Reading about the Wifi fix at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21406675 it could be that HTC have screwed up the Wifi settings where it reads the country code is Qatar. Be curious to see if this is a common problem for all Qatari HTC ICS upgraders. The other common problem with ICS and WiFi seems to be the WPA_supplicant.conf file getting corrupted.
Question - if you rip your SIM out, can you see any WiFi SSIDs, and connect to any? This should show if you've got a problem a or problem b - as the WiFi country code is set by the SIM card. have you logged a problem with HTC? The more problems logged might be evidence they have a bug, rather then just telling you to do a factory reset or reboot your router.....
I have an HTC__038 (SuperCID'd) which I bought in the Philippines. I'm on Qatar for holiday. I'm running Virtuous Inquisition 4.0.1.
It's not the router's fault guys and factory resetting it would be just bringing the pain of reconfiguring other devices in your network. My nieces have phones running Android 2.3 devices and they can connect to the Wifi properly. WiFix didn't work for me either.
The thing was, that 5sec that the phone was able to see the SSID, I was able to configure it with WPA2 and managed to have it saved but after that no SSID's were recognized by the phone. So having no Wifi, I just left the phone alone to empty battery since I was just staying home.
After charging fully and doing a cold boot, the phone could connect to the home wifi with no troubles. I rebooted and emptied/cold boot again just to make sure and it connects without a hitch now.
I don't exactly know how this is a solution but you guys could try it and test your mileage on it.
ON SOMETHING UNRELATED: All I'm getting around Doha is HSDPA. Have you guys managed to get HSPA or HSPA+?

I've ripped my SIM out and tried it without the SIM, without success.
I'll point to my previous post that the wifi fix applictaion implies that some system security settigns for WiFi are based upon the country of the SIM card.
If everyone in Qatar (where HTC have no official presence) has this issue, I suspect the issue above. I strongly recommend that anyone who has the issue log it via the htc website, and be quite specific about the scenario, country of us and source of the phone. Enough users reporting the same issue will set alarm bells ringing and maybe get some action.
With regard to the previous post - tired a cold boot with a fully chraged battery and conencting to my home WiFi network without success. No idea if Qtel support HSPA/+. How does one tell?
Got same problem with restarting and optimizing apps, didnt figured out how to get rid of it yet, another thing that bothers me are all of sudden shutdowns, the usual message pops up sayin my batery is low (usualy 15-20%) and then it turns off the phone completely

I too am in Qatar, though I bought my HTC Sensation unbranded in the UK. Just upgraded to ICS and I'm without wifi, why didn't this come up on google BEFORE I installed it?
I've been onto HTC online and they tell me they need me to post the phone back to UK (or SPain/Taiwan if I prefer) and they will fix it, but I will loose SMS and anything else I've not backed up and all my apps will be wiped.
I'm furious!
A quick update. I've just got back home and taken my QTEL sim card out and put a UK Three sim card in and I have full wireless functionality, which is great. However I can't use this to make my calls, but at least it gives a clue that might lead to a simple fix.
Thankfully I didn't do the factory reset as advised by the muppet at HTC.
---------- Post added at 01:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:30 AM ----------
I swapped back to Qtel and wifi worked for maybe 10 mins, then stopped again, swapped back to UK Three and wifi worked again.
But this infernal upgrading apps everytime it starts is a PITA too.

Out of curiosity - does WiFi work if you remove the Qtel SIM and reboot?
Have you told HTC the solution/issue? I think as a community we've done pretty much all the debugging we can do - clearly Qtel SIMS are causing some sort of interaction with WiFi (system security settings) as per the WiFi fix apk for rooted phones. Ive also heard people having issues in other smaller countries which do not have an official HTC presence.
For those who still have the issue - I'm going to try to revert back to gingerbread tonight. I'm still very much a noob - I just want a phone to work and don't want to tinker with it - but it would appear that if I download an RUU from filefactory and have the right release for your phone it'll install automagically. If it's the worng release and you haven't rooted your phone, it won't install - no harm done.
After update a ICS my wifi turn on when I press power button all the morning

Yes, I tried no sim card first and it didn't work. Oddly it's not working with the UK sim at the moment, though it was earlier this morning.
I emailed HTC last night so obviously I've not had a reply yet.
I spoke to HTC about reverting back and was told it's not possible.
On the plus side, I've reinstalled the drivers and I can now get online with the phone using the USB cable with internet pass through, but it's not an answer.

On 1 - There does seem to be a lag issue soemtimes on wifi packing it in. On my inital run on ICS I'd used my phone for 5-10 minutes before it lost wifi, then it's been consistently bad.
I got a reply from HTC today, worryingly the ticket is status "pending closed". He asked for baseband and kernel release. Knowing the way an IT developer thinks it's a case of looking at the bug report for 2 seconds and thinking "this guy has rooted his phone and that's caused the issue - let's prove it by getting baseband and kernel release". I reiterated to HTC that by my count there are 5 people from Qatar who've posted on this issue, as well as some other "minor" locations. On the upside - at least the developer/QA team have looked at the bug and asked at least one question. Just need to get someone in the developer/QA team who's heard of the issue multiple times to take notice.
With regard to reverting back - not possible through official channels. But if you find the right RUU you can revert back without being rooted, to an official release. Subject to time tonight - that's my plan. You need to find things like your CID and use this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195475 to translate it to the right release. Maybe use CID_getter (via market/play) and make sure you have the right SKU (I'm learning this on the fly!) and try and find the RUU at the filefactory link which is posted several times (I can't post it).
On the USB pass through - is there a special HTC driver? I couldn't get that working either!

For the USB passthrough I just went into HTC Sync on my laptop which I ever use and hit the update button and it installed the latest usb driver as part of it.
Another update:
I've just tried a Vodafone Qatar sim in the phone and that doesn't work with wifi either so it looks like a country issue rather than a provider issue.

Idle thought - I've had a thought that the issue might be character set related? I.E. Our phones are expecting one character set (in my case - the SEA language), and from the SIM it's picking up Qatar, running into an Arabic character somehow, and this is causing some sort of mis configuration on wireless.
I heard back from HTC again on their baseband/kernel question - I asked why the status was pending closed, they said it's part of the process they need to do when they go back to the user. They say to "kindly notice that HTC are working the issue".
As I'm the only one they're asking the questions from, do I revert back to gingerbread tonight and give up, or deal with the first world hardship of having a non smart smart phone in the hope I can help others?

Well I've spoken to HTC in the UK with a really nice guy there who didn't try to fob me off with the usual, reboot, hard reset etc etc
He listened to what I told him and admitted he has no idea what the issue is, they are going to report it and see what they can do, in the meantime he did suggest a factory reset would be worth a shot. I pointed out that if it is a fault with both Qtel AND voda that maybe they should stop the rollout in Qatar until they have tested it and fixed the issue.
I really don't want to have to reload all my apps and more importantly lose all the data stored in the apps so I'm off to find a backup.
If it's not working by Friday, I'm going to root the damn thing and flash a new ROM (even if it's 2.3) on it and sod the warranty.

Edit - Someone in the ICS makes it to the middle East thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1570818&page=2 says it'll be fixed this month, although I question how they can know this yet HTC are asking me for questions on the nature of the problem - I.E. still debugging. Lucky it's early in the month.
my device has this odd behaviour i have already seen years ago on my htc magic. tje mobile data connection switches between umts and hspa constantly which can be observed by the chqnging H/3G icon. every time it switches the transfer stops which makes the mobile data connection painfully slow at most times... wifi is working perfectly btw.
as far as i understand it this is a bug in the radio firmware. my htc magic stopped showing this behaviour after a firmware update...
anyone else having this issue?
Oh the dreaded "arrow up" "bug" is at large still with 3 it seems.'

I've actually got the exact same problem on my Desire Z on T-Mobile DE. Not sure what to make of it. And I've played with the One S in a Telekom Shop and it seems to be switching wildly between 3G and H too.
The same Desire Z didn't have this problem with a Vodafone Romania SIM card in Bucharest.

hm ... i guess/hope it's a bug in the radio firmware as the data transfer works fine for the rest of the connection after the initial 2 switches from HSPA to UMTS and vice versa. a google search shows that many people with different devices seem to have this issue...
anyway i wrote two emails, one to my carrier (three-austria) and one to htc. i will post any replys!
I have the same Problem with my new HTC One S.
The connection switches constantly between 3G and H and the connection stops. It loads 1-3 MB and after that it takes !10 or more seconds! before it is loading another 1-3MB...
You can not do things like Youtube or Mobile TV because the loading process takes forever with a 3G and HSPA switching connection!
I tried my new (big) SIM Card (from 3 Austria) with my HTC HD2 before i switched to the micro SIM (from 3 Austria) and the connection speed on my HD2 was 5-10 times faster as with my new HTC One S and this can not be!! (HD2 is running Custom Andriod 2.3.7 with radio 2.15.50.14.)
It has to be a major radio software bug that is unexaptable for such an expensive phone!
The Internet is extremely fast with Wifi on my One S... but on the way i doesnt have a Wifi connection...
I really want to keep the phone and everything else works amazingly good but this bug drives me crazy.
I reported this problem to HTC and 3 (drei) as well via E-Mail.
Should i keep the phone?? Or is it better to send it back to Amazon, because i have only 12 days left to send it back without any reason.
Is HTC going to release a radio firmware update very soon? I have no experience with Android updates and HTC. How long does it usually take to receive updates from HTC?
Thanks in advance!
hi, i understand that you are also on three (drei) in austria, probably even in vienna?!
i also sent mails describing the exact problem to three and htc. however neither one was able to give me any more information than what i already new. inbetween i tried a hardware (factory) reset and another sim (on yesss!), but the problem persited.
after several mails back and fourth the htc guy now wrote me a standard "your unit maybe broke and you can send it in for repair" email. however i am pretty sure that this is no hardware defekt but a bug in the radio firmware in which case exchanging the phone would not serve.
it is hard to say how long it will take htc to deliver an update for the radio firmware that fixes this bug. despite the htc support giving me the standard "exchange the unit" answer i will try to push them to get the ticket to the development department. i think that this should not be too hard to fix if they are aware of the problem.
i was just at a local three store in vienna. they said that they don't know of other people having this issue. i checked the software version of the devices they sell against my unlocked one s. same baseband version however a different (and newer!) build number. sadly this firmware is not available yet so there is no way to check if an update will solve the issue.

a custom rom with 1.53.771 firmware would help?
hm interresting! so the problem actually occurs with many different carriers... would be good to know if anybody solved the problem by exchanging the device?!!
@Goody81: i am not 100% sure but i'd say after all testing and looking at system-/kernel-logs i am pretty convinced that this is a firmware (software) issue. i cannot say that the slightly newer build on the device was due to carrier modifications or if they actually changed something to fix this issue. the guy how showed my the device was no engineer and had no idea what i tried to explain
if this is a software issue and they already fixed it i hope htc delivers the update soon!

Yesterday i received a phone call from 3 Tech support in Germany and i described the problem to him!
He said the problem does not exist with their 3 branded phones.
Then i said, i have a open (not branded) phone from Amazon and i think that is a part of the problem. Later i asked about updates and then he said in most cases it took 9 Month to receive a original update from HTC and thats way to long for me.
So i decided to send my phone back and now i am looking for a phone with the newer radio software on it. It seems the only way for now is to buy it at a 3 (three, drei) Store.
But that's just my own opinion ! You can also wait for a custom rom or radio here at xda and hope this problem will be fixed soon.
But if you want to get sure to receive a working phone with fast internet connection you should buy it direct from a 3 store because they have a customized (and branded) software in order to get it working!
And that software doesnt exist or is not available on a open phone yet.
Anyway, i was not very excited when I heard about that!

hehe i think 9 month is a "little" exaggerated ... this is not a major update like a new android version but a small bug-fix update. i would guess that an updated firmware will leak soon and if you are willing to unlock the bootloader you can update instantly. however i have to agree, i am tempted to return the device as well or at least try a demo unit in a store with my sim card to make 100% sure it's no hardware defekt...
this is an unfortunate pain in the a** since i like everything else about this phone and don't want to return it ^^

Yeah you are right. It would be a bug-fix or only a radio update but i liked that phone and i want a working (non switching) one asap!
And of course i have to try it in the 3 Shop first with my own SIM card.

Oh i forgot!!
The 3 Tech support man from Germany also said they having the same problem on Samsung phones with Android 4.0.4. I think they will also have a fix for this soon.
So make sure not to buy such a phone as well at this time!
It's definitive not only a HTC problem...

yeah, i told my girlfriend about the issue yesterday and she has experienced it on her (my old) galaxy s with the new cm9 nightlies as well. not as often as on my one s however ...
after reading about this issue on this forum (german) and more general about mobile data connections with umts/hspa (german) i think it the issue is the result of an error in the umts<->hspa switching algorithm. as explained on the 2nd link the device will switch from umts to hspa if the bandwidth increases above a certain threshold (~380k) which will interrupt the connection. so far this is normal behaviour however it should not change constantly between during the transfer of data. i am able to achieve a stable (uninterruped) download if a set the maximal bandwidth below ~300kbit. above this threshold the problem occures.
i am now 99.9% sure this is no hw-issue so i will keep the device and a) hope for either htc or three to make modifications/an update to solve this isssue. b) i will investigate if this threshold/algorithm can be influenced with either build.prop or some other method in which case i will root the device and try do develop a fix. i think everybody that has this issue should inform htc about it as they probably have the best chance to fix it fast.
edit: if someone with a three (drei) branded device reads this: i would very much appreciate it if you could post your /system/build.prop file here! thank you in advance!
Hey guys, I've had my HTC One S for T-Mobile and ive had it for about 1 week and it has rebooted on me twice so far. not sure why. the first time it was in my pocket and i heard the T-Mobile boot up animation sound go off in my pocket and pulled it out my phone to see it was just booting up for some reason. then today i was going to look at my friendstream widget (on my home screen) and my phone locked up for a second and then rebooted itself. i'm not happy about it since i once owned a g2x which rebooted like crazy. i'm hoping it stops randomly doing this crap but i reported it to HTC since it gave me the option once it rebooted. my HTC one s is rooted with the stock rom with bloatware removed and carry IQ removed. i just wanted to see if i'm the only one having this issue.
It happens to me too :/ sometimes i wake up in the morning and i see the HTC error message. Maybe a software issue?

I had like two reboots, but then I updated the phone and the problems disappeared. Have you updated to the latest firmware ?

i dont think there is an update for the tmobile htc one s.
Two days since I bought it and already rebooted two times when exiting the mail client while network was switching from H to 3G. I upgraded it to the latest firmware OTA just after putting the SIM card into.
My son had a problem with random reboots. After enabling Best Wifi Performance in Wifi, advanced settings, they went away. This is on a TMOUS version. Could be totally unrelated to your issue, but worth a try. I've noticed that the wifi has some weirdness to it, like hanging on to a connection long after it's out of range. I hope there is a software update soon.

well i hope htc can fix this issue. it hasnt happened again yet. i also have the tmobile htc one s.

I don't have tmob version and mine is on 1.78. It was that update which fixed it, it seems. You did an update search right?

yeah i guess here in the US we havent got an ota update that i know of. i kept checking for updates but it said my one s is up to date.
Another reboot this morning. This time I received a txt thru Facebook Messenger. I saw it on my desktop and ear, exactly at the same time, the HTC One S rebooting. This might be app related this time.
My One S specs:
- EU edition
- Stock ROM, 1.78 OTA
- Wifi disabled
Yes my H1S reboots about 3 times a week, or the "Loading ..." window is seens 3 or 4 times a week as well.
one more time... I'm gonna consider switching to another ROM in a very near future.
rebooting on 1.78 stock and other custom roms too
Hi guys, I had this issue with stock rom on 1.78 and previous too, so it is probably a radio issue. If I am connected to my wifi network at home, then I go out, the phone switches to hsdpa (as it should) and then I come back home, the reconnection to the wifi network causes the phone to reboot.
I had this issue on all roms I used, both stock and trickdroid 3.1 / 4.3.
My wifi direct is already disabled, my location is Italy. I have seen also that people on the US T-mobile support webpage are complaining about something very similar, wifi related.
Thanks
I'm on tmous and have had two of these reboots since I got the phone on US release day.
As others have said, mine have only happened when I'm on the very edge of my WiFi coverage. It's like the phone can't decide which network to grab on to and freaks out. I don't have the issue when it's just normally switching from WiFi to data like when I go out and then come home. It only seems to happen when I'm right on the edge of WiFi for a few minutes.
Not a huge deal, since its only happened a couple of times. If I remember when I'm off this week, i'll try to get a logcat because I should be able to reproduce it at the edge of my back yard
that would be great, as it sounds like it is the same issue. I always found tricky to save logcats due to amount of information in them and spotting the exact reason for crashing.
Hi All...
Previously, I'm using SGS3 before i gave it to my brother and using HTC One S C2 instead.
Since the very beginning, I'm having an issue with my data connection and it is very very very annoying till i felt paranoid whenever I'm browsing the net using my phone, scared that it will disconnected anytime randomly which is ALWAYS happened.
Sysmptoms:
When i received SMS, it will disconnected.
When it is idle for quite some time, it will stuck at 3G icon and disconnected eventually before reconnecting.
Sometimes, after disconnected, my internet won't work even though i have 3G icon showing and even H icon sometimes.
None of it happened when i'm using SGS3 so i know for sure it is not my SIM nor my provider issue. IT IS the phone but i don't think it is the hardware issue based on the symptoms.
I have done many things, i have revert back to stock, run back ICS RUU for my CID, supercid my phone, update the firmware, s-off it, s-on it back, just name it, i have done everything for few weeks and the issues still haunting me.
I have tried searching on the net but couldn't find anything related to ville c2 though i found a lot of people with quite similar problems (though not 100% same as mine) but not from someone using C2 and most of their fixes is changing some parameters in build.prop which doesn't fix anything for me.
So, i checked my radio catlog and found some interesting logs in there. It seems that my phone keeps doing teardown request which renew my connections. And i know it is related to the stale time of my connections.
EDIT: It seems like the stale time cannot be set using sysctl.conf, now i'm trying another method and ready to waste another more time to figure out why the heck these happened to me. Maybe a combo of this device + my carrier or what. **SIGH**
Anyone who have same issue or have an idea what else can be done to ELIMINATE these issue, please don't hesitate to share it.
Just an update to my issue.
So i have flashed the latest indian cid 38 OTA firmware into my phone under desperation and disappointments. But to my surprise, it is way better than when im on firmware for cid 44 which is supposed to be my phone's cid. Its now has been more than 5 days and i had the previously mentioned issues only ONCE.
Yes sometimes data suddenly slows down or sometimes "frozen" and stuck at 3G and sometimes suddenly goes to E before up to H again (in the middle of browsing or downloading) but the original super annoying issues of disconnections especially when sms coming is GONE.
Wth htc??? Grrrr.....

Try applying the build.prop fix for "Fast data" listed in the general forum. A number of folks with the exact problem you are describing are reporting resolution.
It appears it might be an issue with fast dormancy.
I believe I have the same phone carrier combo as you. I do not however have your problems. Where do you stay? East Malaysia?

That I'm not sure. I thought you're using DiGi since your picture has DiGi's logo in it.
