I'll admit, I was kind of praying for a 2D fighting game... but this was even more of a pleasant surprise! Just a couple days ago I was thinking about how badass it'd be if someone would bring Streets of Rage-style beat 'em ups back to life... but with RPG elements so that it doesn't get boring after one hour.
...and lookie what I ran into! The graphics are quite distorted through stretching, but the game runs nicely, and it works well with Xperia PLAY's physical controls (which is nice, because - as we could expect - the virtual gamepad is simply awful ).

I sometime go through the market to look for stuff. How do you find these apps? I usually searchj for "Xperia PLAY or XPERIA PLAY OPTIMITZED. Mind if I ask what you type in for your searches? Also have you played the new Zenonia 4? Its really awesome, I have a thread for it as well on this forum. Thank you for sharing the info on the game.

I didn't comment on the Zenonia 4 topic, but you guys should already know by now that an Xperia PLAYable RPG won't be released without me promptly getting my hands on it
As for how I find this stuff... most of the time I'm just hunting for general Android games that look like they'd be badass on Xperia PLAY, without specifically searching for Xperia PLAY games.
What helps me out is that a lot of games have generic compatibility with d-pads and the enter key (which I probably don't need to explain is X on Xperia PLAY) so while a game may not specifically be Xperia PLAY optimized, a lot of the times generic key compatibility means it'll work well enough to play.
So it's basically just trial and error.

About that... I found out Caligo Chaser is compatible with qwerty keyboards. One could just use game keyboard to set up physical controls, it's quite easy... But the onscreen controls just can't be disabled The onscreen controls can't be disabled on King Pirate as well - Caligo Chaser also seems cool. I mentioned those games because of this one, they seem quite alike. Which leads to the question... Can onscreen controls be disabled on this one? Your screenshots make it seem so.

Whooaa. So lemme get this straight, there IS a way to get Caligo Chaser working with Xperia PLAY's controls? It's kinda my favorite game from iOS and I've been hounding the dev team for about a year trying to get them to add in Xperia PLAY compatibility to no avail. I'm just sayin' I'd geek pretty hard over that.

Sadly no... matter of fact, the options don't allow you to do much at all :\
We could always try asking the devs. Got us Further Beyond Fighting and Castle of Shadows.

Yep, it could be done. I haven't tried it, but c'mon... A giant popup tutorial shows up telling you qwerty compatibility. Just write down the buttons and then map them using gamekeyboard the only flaw, as I've just said, is the non-removability of the onscreen controls :/ but yea, we have to ask the devs. At least about that

A new game by Glu Mobile just dropped, "Blood And Glory", bringing Infinity Blade style visuals and gameplay to the Android platform for the first time! While this game isn't an Xperia Play optimized game, I felt it was worth discussing. It is after-all a game that runs on the Xperia Play. The game looks absolutely gorgeous, at first I thought it was running on Unreal Engine 3! There is no story to speak of, thats becuase you are a nameless gladiator fighting to the death by swiping across the screen from a stationary position with options for blocking and dodging. Take THAT Fruit Ninja!
Wow... not bad at all.
This actually runs quite a bit smoother than Infinity Blade does on my 4th gen iDevice. Graphics are amazing and gameplay is a complete replication.
That'll do, pig.
Looks awesome. Glu is Play friendly so I'm sure they will have an update for this eventually. Thats when I will give it a shot.
awesome game
awesome game
Not Xperia Play Optimised=I'll stick to Infinity Blade on my iPod
Someone asked "I don't know what type of graphics eros78 is talking about."
This is what I'm talking about. Really good texture mapping, high fidelity animations and a game camera to support it. This looks great.
If this game was xperia play optimised it'd be awesome. Good find though!
this game is EPIC!
Would be cool if this game used the buttons, I'm even worse at touch controls after not using them for a while.
I'm all for seeing more games Xperia PLAY Optimized, but has anyone even thought of how they'd make a game like this work on Xperia PLAY?
I could see the d-pad being dodge and R being block, L being Special Attack and Triangle triggering the menu for auxiliary items... but there's that all-too-important aspect of directional attacks.
Not to make it seem like I'm saying it's impossible, but how do ya think they'd pull that off?

For this type of game,I think it's better to leave it on the touchscreen.
It's like Fruit Ninja. Touchpad would be stupid.

They can map it to both so users can choose, although in my opinion there wouldn't be any detraction to the experience by using the touchpads, since it's literally the exact same motions. In fact I'd prefer to not frantically swipe the screen, just seems sloppy to me.

That's moreso what I was getting at when I made the comment about converting combat to gamepad controls. Most genres are crap on touch screens, but games that are tailored specifically around direct interaction with on-screen activity works with touch controls.
This would completely demolish the concept of 1:1 sword combat, but I actually wouldn't mind seeing it simplified to a very basic directional strike system (X strikes downward, /\ strikes upward, O swings sword to the right, etc.)

Have you ever played an FPS with the touchpads? You know that swiping motion you use to maneuver the camera? It's the exact same concept as swiping the screen, I really don't see what's hard so understand about this..
As I said, ideally they can map it to both so you can choose whatever feels better for you
Looks cool. I'm supprised Gameloft haven't already made a copy of Infinity Blade yet.
Anyone else getting reboots?

A new FPS was released on the Android Market recently, The Dead: Chapter One. The game is yet another attempt to replicate the COD: Zombies formula(hurray!). Although not explicitly mentioned in the Market description, this game is fully Xperia Play optimized! The analog sticks and buttons all work perfectly, and the touch controls disappear when you slide the gamepad out! I have played with the touch controls and they remind me of the controls for FPS games on Android before Gameloft. The Xperia Play saves the day once again.
Awesome! I was wanting a third person break from all the two stick zombie shooters.
I'm hoping this is more like L4D than COD:Zombies though :S
Jesus... I'm officially 20 games behind on updating my Xperia PLAY game list now
EDIT: Looks like they didn't add R800a to the device check -_- doesn't show up in the Game Launcher or work with the gamepad controls for me.
Controls are great... game is a bit boring after a while though.....
This game is awesome the controls works really good for it too

No it doesn't. Also I'd hardly qualify this game as awesome, you aren't missing much. You run around a 4 room house and kill waves of 20 zombies at a time (and they all look almost identical), eventually you get a key and a rifle, which shoots too slow to be useful so you go back to the pistol you already had. IMHO its about as deep as the shallow end of the kiddie pool.
If this game is awesome, MC2 is Beethoven's 9th Symphony. The only thing it has going for it is the targeting controls don't suck.
Controls is not working for me.. Saw some Xperia play options on control's settings, but no option to apply it.. So I just pressed back button..

Damn shame they're taking so long to fix this.
EnbornX had this same issue where the device check excluded certain models, and Lantansia had that **** patched ONE DAY later. I hope these guys do pick up the pace, because the touch controls are really horrible.
tried it on two plays. but no dice
The game's been updated! About to check out the new version shortly, I'll EDIT with impressions shortly.
EDIT: Working nicely! Shows in in the game launcher too. The movement does not give the option of Continuous (Analog) or Absolute (Swiping) it's all continuous, all the time. I like that you actually have control over the X/Y individually, and don't really have any major complaints about the controls... but the game itself is just kinda... *yawn*. Maybe it's just the first few waves, but I was slowly going to sleep.
Needs more emphasis on getting different weapons, hordes that really make you go "OH ****!" and whip out some awesome reaction skills... and... iuno... it's just missing that *magic* that Left 4 Dead had... it's got plenty of what made me get sick of CoD: Zombies in one day, but I don't want that.
Maybe I'm just setting myself up for disappointment by expecting what this isn't instead of appreciating it for what it is... L4D has me highly biased, and something that doesn't live up to that action usually just puts me to sleep.
Hi, I'm Viktor, the lead programmer on The Dead: Chapter One.

Description
PPSSPP, a PSP emulator prototype for Android.
PPSSPP is a prototype PSP* emulator for Android (and other platforms).
It's still in very early stages and does not run many games. It's provided here if you want to try it, so that you can automatically receive updates over time - over time this will probably become a usable emulator.
Please go to http://www.ppsspp.org for more information.
IMPORTANT: Please do not give bad reviews due to low compatibility. It takes time.
NOTE: No games are included with this download, you will have to dump your own PSP games and turn them into .ISO or .CSO files, or simply play free homebrew games, which are available online.

But very good start.

Barrage Ballad while not too hard, is nice, nice graphics, and some really good Japanese - centric tunes.
I see COLOPL, Inc's strategy is pay to play, with the store and real money playing a part in coins and powerups.

This is something what made me really angry some time ago because on ios they have a lot of cool shmups and on android there were maybe 3 or 4 of them. But meanwhile we get more and more great shmups.
Only Problem is, they are only in Portraitmode, i mean if those games were in Landscape i had no problem with XPO or not because of gamekeyboard.
Thanks for sharing, great looking games.
@cyraxx, I know what you mean. It feels like the only good landscape shooter outside of emulated psx games is Air Attack. There is that new Galaga reboot I posted, but the gameplay is so cramped in landscape I think thats why it wasn't released.

On the subject of shooters, I've just bought Advent Rush: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=game.advent&hl=en
Very nice graphics and sound, gameplay too(from what I can see so far)
and my mate has Battle Squadron ONE, an old amiga game, which has full Xperia Play support: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.copecom.bsone&hl=en
That has a tabletop mode, quite nice, it holds up well in this day and age.
And Magical Cannon Wars, not sure if it's donate version or free, bit it seems solid enough.
And Danmaku Death is a good free game too.
I used to get Market Enabler to work on my Xperia Play, but not lately, might have to try another version or two of it.
EDIT: Now had a chance to play BB Bear, it's ok, not as good as how cute it looks..it does remind me of Bug Princess, with all the insects, which in turn annoys me that CAVE haven't released BG2 or anthing similar to what iOS gets.baahhhhh

I'd recommend Shogun, Battle Squadron One, Danmaku Death, R-Type, and Raiden Legacy. The Cave games seem to work well but I want to play the real thing before trying it on a mobile. Other than that, use an emulator and play in portrait mode holding the play sideways to emulate TATE like Raiden Legacy does. It feels awkward at first but once you get the hang of it you'll fall in love with the Play all over again. Also wanted to add that Radiant Flux wasn't half bad (PSM title).

[GAME][4.1+] NES-like Tetris with multiplayer and no on screen buttons

Hello,
I was searching for a good NES-like Tetris version for Android with online and offline multiplayer support and good touch control for ages. Didn't find any, so I decided to made one myself.
If you also love to play classic NES-style and multiplayer, give it a try. Multiplayer offline works within LAN, online via Google Play Games. You can also earn Play Games XP when performing special actions but of course the app is usable without it.

thanks for the game, it seems good
Uploaded the game to Amazon App Store and added the link for those with Fire devices.
Oh boy, you don't know how long I've been waiting for someone to make a competitive Tetris game that could be played on Android with multiplayer. Honestly, I think there's a lot of potential here if you can polish the game.
First problem are the controls. The control scheme, which requires you to hold your finger and move to move the blocks really doesn't work. You should have the option of going with the traditional (Gameboy) scheme which is basically the 4 directions, two rotations, and a drop...all on separate buttons.
Thanks for your honest feedback.
As for the controls. I did not want to use on screen buttons like the most other Tetris variations for mobile devices. It is not playable when you reach faster levels: You don't hit the buttons and then - game over. This does not happen on Gameboy, of course. The haptic feedback guides your fingers to the right place to push. So, my approach was to reverse this: Instead of your finger needing to hit the right place on the screen where the button to move is, the buttons follow your finger. This is the virtual gamepad you've seen. You say you had to hold your finger and move to move the block. That's correct - but you don't have to move your finger all the time. That is a common misunderstanding I see, but I don't know how to avoid it. Obviously the Tutorial is not clear enough, but another difficulty is that players are used to drag&drop gestures on touch screens. But look at the animation above. You see the gray dot, that's the touch point.
The players that get used to the approach are mostly satisfied with it and like it. So - is my assumption correct, did you think you have to drag the pieces?
the game looks very promising.. installed and will try it.. thx!
i have tried some tetris clones using on-screen buttons for control.. imho they are not good for touch screen games..
this is actually the reason why im attracted to this game's approach..
Added link to the Github repository with the game service extension (just the game service implementation - not the whole game is open-sourced )
The game has now reached v1.00 with over 1000 downloads, 40 reviews and a rating of 4.8!
User interface was completely refreshed and the game is also available for Android TV and FireTV.
WOW. I randomly passed by here and am so glad I did! I wil definitely share it with everyone I know who likes Tetris.
Thank you again! The EA version was .. more than disappointing for me and you did it perfect
Nice and simple game
What kind of engine did you use to build this game ?
Good tetris. Unfortunately it is impossible use name Tetris in the Google Play due to copyrights.
Looks very good, and the multiplayer function is very great.
Thank you all!

I used libGDX to develop it. I can really recommend this engine.
@Diameyy I am currently working on a global, turn-based multiplayer. I will post here when it will be available in the beta channel.
