Hi all!
I am buying my first Android smartphone. But unfortunately my budget is quite small for my first purchase. :|
I need your help in choosing the perfect phone between the Vodafone Smart (AKA the Vodafone 858 Smart) & Spice Mi-280.
Some of the advantages+disadvantages I found among the two are as follows:
Vodafone (VF858) Smart:
-2 years warranty
-originally a Huawei handset (the U8160)
-has large userbase as Vodafone also has this very same model present in UK (available at around 60GBP) similarly priced in India for INR 4995/-
Spice Mi-280: (Plz Google up for checking out the exact specs.)
-has 3.2 megapixel camera + the front facing VGA camera for video calling (though I read it while googling that this video calling camera is NOT working with skype.. thats just sad )
- 650 Mhz processor?
- double sim
- android 2.3 (seriously this wont matter much to me as I will be installing cyanogen mod 7.2 in a few weeks of the purchase)
- 1 yr warranty
Thanks
You may want to consider a used option, especially if well taken care of you could get a good android phone for a lot less than retail. I bought my Thrill 4g (LG Optimus 3d) for $160 in pretty much perfect condition.
But between the two of those I'd go with the first one, 2 year warranty is nice.
Second for used. Seriously, you'll get a much better deal.
.
Thread moved to Q&A due to it being a question. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
Failure to comply with forum rules will result in an infraction and/or ban depending on severity of rule break.
With new Android smartphones being announced (e.g., Samsung Galaxy S III), there will likely be an increase in the number of used (but relatively new) smartphones.
If you came to XDA for advice, go used! Surely you'll regret bricking a brand new phone!J/k

LOL
+1 (specifically)
I thought it was possible to rewrite my ROM with the original backup copy of the ROM (isn't that possible?)
Yeah, going for a used one is another good option. But as you must've read I am from India and here people chew outta their cellphones before actually disposing it off So its not a feasible option for me.
fyi, I have seen many video reviews of Vodafone Smart (VF858) and it looks good to me (overclocking, cyanogen mod..there are TONS of experiments in my mind

+2 years warranty.
Its always good to start off small..(and gradually stepping up to bigger and bigger) coz I'll be really bricking my phone (atleast now that I am on XDA)
MUHAHAHa

really sorry for that MOD.
Actually I wanted it to post in the Market Place section (in one of th sub-section) but was unable to do so (some ultra nerdy posting rules )
It really depends on what your budget is. Yes it is a good start with a lower end smartphone but it also depends on how you are planning to use it. From experience, I have my Samsung Galaxy S for more than a year now and never looked back. They are getting cheaper now second hand. Having said that, I'd suggest maybe see if you can find someone with that phone you want and go from there if that phone is really right for you.
Base for installing cyanogen mod 7.2, I will choose the second,
but the speed of the processor it is criticized..

ok..first of all the 1st one listed by me (the Vodafone Smart (VF858) AKA rebranded Huawei U8160) is actually having a proc whose freq. is locked down to 528Mhz. and CAN BE* overclocked easily upto 650Mhz or so without any stability issues (has been confirmed by many on XDA too + CM mod has been tested AND theres a separate thread for CM's deployment on U8160's hah)
So, I don't feel in anyway that VF858's proc is underpowered (from the point-of-view of the cheapest Android cellphone out there)
Regarding second hand cellphone: hmm..until now I am taking this up as: "when buying a second hand you really can't say what part of the phone has been lingered with or not, the ROM, the chipset etc."
So I'll stay away from these..(for now* unless I want a more powerful hardware minus (-) the warranty, unknown issues confused)
UPDATE: finally after a lot of continuous googling, reading reviews.. I have left my 2nd listed choice(the one from Spice) (actually it sucks..chk out its specs for details; doesn't even have a Qualcomm Chipset (VF858 does have it )+ unknown support for CM :/ and the battery is totally crap)
What say fellas?

Oh my gawd! Best news I heard in a long time..
Just imagine... in 2009 we will perhaps see a HTC phone that actually performs to its specifications instead of being doggedly slow and crippled!
If I read it right, at least, Tegra platform will have it's own ARM chips, so that would mean MSM is out... No more Qualcomm. Best news ever.
EDIT: At least, this is assuming HTC doesn't order a crippled version like we know we they did before
sweeeeet
Brilliant news, hopefully this means some killer devices this year.
Just hope nvidia dont do a Qualcomm and ask for money for drivers
Best NEWS for HTC in a long time!!! The sooner a htc device with it the better!
I hope that it won't have those drivers issue that 5500 suffered from.

I read about the above on WMPowerUser. Since then I've been ever so joyous and happy. Then, someone posted this 'thing' in the comments.
And sure enough people:
Multiple designs underway
Fifteen leading manufacturers are now developing more than 30 Snapdragon-powered devices, the first of which should reach the market in the first half of 2009. The growing list of Snapdragon customers includes leading original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original design manufacturers (ODMs) such as Acer, ASUS, C-motech, Compal, Foxconn, HTC, Inventec, LG Electronics, Quanta Computer, Samsung, Toshiba and Wistron.

I hope the QC Snapdragon is only in the Thoth (leaked UMPC) and not in all the usual handsets. If it's the other way round, then goodbye HTC.

Yeah, 'cause Qualcomm's track record for making awesome chips just speaks for itself. Who wouldn't expect snapdragon to be all that the specs say?
* finds a wall to hit his head against
That is offensive. For those who have ainkling about how Q lied to us the consumers, I don't think they'll be awfully happy.
Hope they fit the hardware to WM7 somehow and to have WiMax going.. cause i don't feel like buying 2 devices
btw, Nvidia ROCKS.
The best news of 2009 thus far i'd say!

yea it definately does i am looking forward to this bump qualcom
Sorry to disappoint you, but it's possible that a Qualcomm baseband will remain in HTC smart phones in 2009. I haven't found a decent Tegra specification where this would be clearly indicated, however it looks like there's no integrated radio baseband. This is not a big surprise, as NVidia is not a major player in mobile radios market.
HTC was/is using Qualcomm basebands with many of their devices (for example based on Samsung SC3xxx). OMAP platform features an integrated baseband though.
Does anyone know for a fact what RF features Tegra chips natively support (apart from Wi-Fi and BT)?
Nope, but Qualcomm's radios aren't that bad IMHO. They're used all over the place in mobiles. I have no problem with reception, call quality, wireless connectivity or any of that. One of the few things they can actually do is RF. It's all the other stuff they fail at.
I'd be happy with Tegra SOC + Qualcomm RF! Perhaps I'd be even happier with Omap3 still, though that remains to be seen.

Hello fellow XDA members. Who and what is Benchmark you might ask? I will introduce us in short. Benchmark is largest website and community in the Adriatic region, with latest and greatest informations in the domains of Hardware, Software, Mobile, Multimedia, Business IT and Games. We write reviews for many categories of devices, one of which are smartphones.
Anyway, we have something that might be of interest to you, and if we are not mistaken, this will be a premiere and a real review of Huawei Ascend P1 smartphone, not just hands on details. We managed to grab an Engineering Sample early, so we were lucky. I decided to do a thorough translation of our original text in Serbian, so that others enjoy the review too. Here is the link leading to our review in English:
http://mobile.benchmark.rs/mobilni_telefoni/review_huawei_ascend_p1_u9200_english_version
It would be nice if you could share this review with others, it would mean very much to us. We aren't popular like Engadget and GSMarena, so spreading the word is not a simple task. Cheers guys, and hope you will like my review.
Fantastic work mate I must say. Bravo.
Ill share this with my fellows
All the best
Nice review and nicely spec'd phone, I wonder if this will ever reach the UK market because brands like this rarely do?
Stock ICS but not the stock ICS launcher?
There is a stock ICS launcher, 3D one is just optional, as i wrote in the review

It comes with Android 4.0.3 version, and an optional 3D interface.

I realize now, does still look very nice but it's a shame about the slightly lower spec GPU when the rest of the phone is of such high spec. I'm not sure what it means for real time use though.
Isn't the GPU the same as the one Samsung used in the slightly inferior SGS2 GT-I9100G?
As for Huawei in the UK, I have seen very fee of their products here tbh. They are about, I own a Huawei E586 MiFi but you don't see many phone other than low spec cheap pay monthly.
Maybe if this phone is as good as it sounds it'll get picked up by UK carriers, would be interesting see how it performs against the SGS3 later this month and the Galaxy Note 2 when it arrives.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Swyped from a distant star, the other side of the Galaxy on my GT-I9100 powered by ICS 4.0.3 using Tapatalk ©
Well yeah, PowerVR SGX540 does come in I9100G model, but also in many other models like Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S I9000, Wave I and II, Motorola DROID RAZR XT91, LG Prada, etc. It's not a fresh chip that's for sure, it was manufactured in November 2007, but it still widely used in devices, as it is still very powerful.
There is a a discussion circling the internet, about Mali-400, the most praised GPU that SGS2 and Note have, only being better in benchmarks, because of the higher fill rate.
"The Mali-400 MP4 in the SGS2 is performing better than the SGX 540 in benchmarks because of fill rate. Read this article by Anand, it explains some of the differences between the GPUs: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4686/samsung-galaxy-...
When it comes to handling polygon counts though, the SGX 540 is actually much more capable. Next year's games will be very poly-intensive and this is where the SGX 540 can actually start outperforming the Mali-400 in the SGS2."
So, I would say that it's not entirely a bad thing having a PowerVR SGX540, and in real use, it doesn't make a huge difference vs Mali-400, as people think it does.
I don't have any doubts that Samsung will take its SGS3 and Note 2 a couple of steps further. Huawei really needs to think very carefully, and assign a good price for this model, because it might find itself outperformed by models that are coming very soon.
Nice review, keep up the good job!
Good and exclusiv review.
I wish you all the best. Keep going with the good work.
Thanks for the review! How about the Ascend P1 S? Has it been released yet?
This phone is so amazing, it has all the features that you may need. I definitely will go for it when it hits Chile
So the P1 is fatter and does have less battery 1670
and the P1 s is thinner and does have a bigger battery 1800 mA , is that correct? I thought just the inverse.
And engadget said that the snappier of the two was the P1 S, anyone wonder why? if they have the same specs.
do you konw if this device support OTG ?
will be really interesting how much support this device will get from community devs
nice review! i just want to share that i bought mine at http://www.liaow.com/huaweiascendp1u9200.asp and its the international version! i really love this phone!
As I would really like to know a "when" but, I was really just wondering if there has been any news on the DFT project of a Windows Mobile loader for Windows Phone 7.
It was tweeted about here..
https://twitter.com/#!/CotullaCode/status/169865585591721985
We head a nice buzz about it on about 2 months ago with a video but, now nothing and has anyone heard any news on it ?
I have searched and googled the "heck" out of it with nothing but old news...
This is NOT looking for a ETA (that would be breaking XDA rules) I am just wondering if there has been progress or news on it.
Thanks !
I'm not aware of any. That's a bit surprising, considering that it looked pretty polished int he preview videos. It would be nice if the DFT forum weren't so inaccessible to most people who frequent XDA-Devs; there's a number of other forums as well and it's too bad that the hacking and homebrew community ineitably ends up fragmented as a result.
Exactly why I posted this. The Video looked like it was almost ready, there was hype about it and that was it. That was about 2 months ago.
And your so true about the fragmentation, it's too bad.
Thanks for your reply !
I guess no one has heard anything about this project ? Man, I have about 3-4 apps (nothing too fancy) that would love to run again and at least see if it was as good as I remember.
This sounded like a cool project..
It's been a while and I would really like this. My old Touch Pro's VGA display is too small to use my old 6.1/5 apps...
So, what they heck, anyone have a update on this ?
There has been a fair amount of silence of several projects lately, I suspect they are just busy.
Although in saying that, we're still waiting on WM6 ROM for the Alpine! that had a video published several years ago sooo.....
My guess is that development has been poured in to sorting out HSPL for various devices and similar tasks, after all, that is a much more useful project for a lot more individuals.
If you want my advice, just forget about it, that way, if and when its done then you can be over the moon again
rather then spend the next 6 months being annoyed about it all!
Maybe they are busy doing away with those God awful 1 2 3 buttons at the bottom of the screen; God I hope so
I am eagerly waiting for this release from DFT. I read somewhere that it uses something called hTC Gold to emulate. I really hope that it works on a Samsung Focus.
"HTC Gold" is HTC's internal name for the model of phone commonly known as the "HTC 7 Pro" (the CDMA variant, commonly called "HTC Arrive", is known as the "HTC Gold_C"). The phone you see in the picture above is an HTC Gold model.
As for whether it will work on a Focus, I can't be certain of that but I would guess that yes, it probably can. It depends on how much they're relying on the hardware of the phone, vs. just virtualizing all of that, though. For example, the 7 Pro (Gold) has a hardware keybaord, as you can see. The Focus does not, so if for some reason the hardware keyboard is required, that won't work. However, in most ways, all gen1 and even gen2 Windows phones are very similar.
Has anyone seen any new news on this ?
Does anyone know if there is any news on this?
Best regards
I guess we'll know when cotulla wants us to know...I just hope it doesn't get dropped... It would be so useful!
Desperately waiting for DFT WML?
I'm looking forward to getting this Windows mobile loader too, as I'd like to keep running my brave old. ListPro. App for which I haven't found any decent and valid substitute yet.
Could DFT tell us what the real status is?
Looks like our beloved Charge was mentioned as a witness in this case:
http://www.technobuffalo.com/companies/apple/apple-samsung-trial-verdict/
- rubber band patent
- 915 patent (scrolling with one finger)
- 163 patent (double tap to zoom and center content)
- iphone trade dress (Charge was not in violation of this)
what this could mean for the future for the Charge? who knows?
good side: perhaps a software update to the latest OS with valid patents
bad side: a software update reverting these violations
neutral: nothing....
Here's a interesting write up about some sketchiness among the jury and the decision. In this light, it seems almost certain that at appeal is coming, if not outright dismissals on at least some of the violations under a Rule 50(b). With this much alleged impropriety, they may even be able to get a stay on the decision.
I doubt Apple is overly concerned with a low sale volume device like the Charge in the grand scheme of things. I imagine that the most that might happen is stopping production.
sales ban
Cnet is reporting that Apple is requesting a ban on sales of the Charge (amongst other phones) in the US.
With appeals and other legal manuvering I have no idea whether this will really happen, but I wonder what it means for customers that have these phones... What would happen if you need a replacement from VZ?
It would be great if they just make them stock android devices with 4.1.1 like the nexus S...The resale value would double lol.
i would not be surprised to see VZW offer us a deep discount on upgrading to another device. probably something like $100 off the 2-year contract price of another device even if you have time left on your current contract. which is really nothing new, but it could easily persuade most out of the charge...
tldr but I'd like to know a summary
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
First article is showing how the only device that the judge felt confident in granting a sales injunction for was one of the few devices that didn't get any judgement against it. Literally, the only device the judge thought was a slam dunk got off clean, and others that she considered to be weak cases got slammed by the jury, which when taken with the earlier reports of procedural errors and bias points further toward an incompetent or biased jury. The second article compares this case to previous attempts by Oracle, SCO, and Microsoft attempting (and failing) to shut down other FOSS projects due to fear, and speculates (with good reasoning) that this could very well be a test case for patent reform that makes it all the way to SCOTUS.
This is just getting worse and worse. The jury foreman in an interview said that he determined that prior art didn't apply because "The software on the Apple side could not be placed into the processor on the prior art and vice versa. That means they are not interchangeable. That changed everything right there." Great logic, except that interchangeability isn't part of the definition of prior art. I can just be words on a piece of paper with no actual implementation whatsoever and still be prior art, yet he managed to convince the rest of the jury using that logic. Keep in mind that this is the same guy who has a patent and admitted that was thinking of this case in terms of defending his own patent.
http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20120828225612963
Every time that guy opens his mouth, he strengthens Samsung's appeal and/or Rule 50(b) filing.
Why Dont they release One phone for ALL This is one downfall of these money hungry FKRS... Korea apparently get the 1.8ghz clocked Octa core WITH LTE ---- WHY CANT WE ALL GET THIS ONE, WHATS THERE FKN PROBLEM.. MTHR-BEEEEEEEP!!!!!!!!!!!... Most other countries will get the I9505 snapdragon and other countries will get the I9500, And here is where is becomes REAL stupid... 60-70% of sites say the I9500 will come only in 3G 30-40% say it can support LTE in some countries.
Some ridiculous news I heard
Samsung did not have enough parts, so they used the S600 to fufill there stock.
Some developers can unlock the i9500 so they it works on LTE
The LTE exynos is bad on battery ( BS ) I own the I9305 its the SAME BATTERY LIFE as the I9300 I owned them both, I DIDNT NOTICE ANY DIFFERENCE
ITS 2013 EVERYPHONE SHOULD COME WITH 4G STANDARD!!!!!!!!
Guys Is the S4 I9500 going to support LTE or not and why are so many places saying it can and and so many saying no... If someone knows anything, do you know what LTE bands it will be
Surprised to see a senior member post this. You can have your exynos octa. I'll take my superior gpu and be on my way
Wow.... switch to decaf?
Sorry I just snapped it.... LOL
I really dont care if its Octa or Quad or what ever.. Why do they need more then one variant... I wasnt happy about the I9305 but I said ahh maybe they made a mistake and realized we should of brought out all the phones with LTE and 2gb ram.... But no it happens again... Ah well life goes on Rant over...
So really is the I9500 LTE or not... And why are there so many places saying it is and vice versa.. Anyone have it in there hands already that actually know?
There's so much ignorance in the OP... and I don't mean that to be disrespectful.
Samsung is one of the only companies that is capable of doing such a giant world wide launch in every country producing millions and millions of HIGH END phones for everyone at once.
No one is capable of doing this, not Apple or HTC.
Apple slowly releases the iPhone out in regions. HTC doesn't sell as well as Samsung does.
Look at it at a business standpoint. That's all I can say.
Bwahahaha! More like " need a hug?" LMAO! Lets get this closed.
I don't want to look at it from a business stand point . I want to look at it from a consumers
I guess you will like it if you buy a phone and then 3 months later they release the same version but enhanced. Well I myself would rather them releasing that enhanced one 1st then 1 year later another enhanced one, but that's just me. < and BTW I don't doubt samsung is a capable company, I just don't believe that they couldn't create one variant for all, its all money making ajendas
Rant out..
So, why did you have to start a brand new thread? I see several open threads about this topic already...
Didn't have enough time to search I just quickly looked at first pages topics and didn't see anything like this.
Feel free to close .. I made my say hopefully a samsung spy has read it and passed my message to the boss LOL
But haven't you seen the benchmarks? They are nearly identical in performance. One isn't going to outperform the other by a noticeable margin. And if there are regions without LTE, then why put LTE chips in those phones? Even if a LTE chip cost $1, that's a few millions of dollars that add up in these regions. That could cut cost on your next TV, Phone or samsung designed toilet.
My i9300 outperforms my GF's i747 in benchmarks but there's nothing I've ever done that her phone couldn't do.
I'll just leave it at this. You're possibly one out of a million consumer that feels this way. The other consumers probably don't care and will never notice the benchmark differences. They will have a phone that functions like another SGS4.
In a research study, people were blindfolded when drinking various water bottles. Most of them chose plain American tap water as the best tasting water.
I do hope that one day Samsung is capable of just making 1 phone for development reasons. But if this allows me to enjoy a SGS at a great price optimized for my region and I don't have to wait 6 months like I did with my ATT Captivate I'm happy!
I believe it's because of fulfillment reasons. They don't have enough initial capacity to produce enough handsets worldwide.
Maybe the OP needs to unregister from XDA and start enjoying life a bit more.
The only fail by Sammy is that they are not using SD600 in all their S4's.
