Require permission to modify ROM? - Android General

So we need explicit written permission to modify any kind of open source now? When did the open source community get like this? My ROM thread was shut down due to the fact that I did not receive prior permission to use the ROM it was based off of. This would mean that each dev would need explicit permission from google to mod their initial code. Please remember that while our devs work hard, none of them produced the initial source. This means that we all have equal rights to the whole thing. When did the community get this way? I'm disappointed. Maybe it is time to move away from XDA...

Read the rules much:
12. Using the work of others.
If you are developing something that is based on the work of another Member, youMUST first seek their permission, and you must give credit to the member whose work you used. If adispute occurs about who developed / created a piece of work, first try to settle the matter by private message and NOT in open forum. If this fails then you may contact amoderator with clear evidence that the work was created by you.
Convincing evidence will result in copied work being removed. If there is no clear evidence you created the work then in the spirit of sharing all work will remain posted on the forums.
These rules apply to all software posted on XDA unless that software comes with alicense that waives these rules.

Ok, that was my fault. But I'm going to need everyone to credit Google on every ROM posted. No one on here developed the initial source code. One person gets a ROM working on a phone, it gets modded, but only Google is the true dev.

Doesn't matter if they are even aware of the forum. Give credit where credit is due. If people want to ruin open source and act like Apple, they should follow their own requests.

It is about respect to your fellow developers and community members, not ownership, or who was first, or any stupid stuff that goes along with it. Just respect. You know you didn't create something, so show some respect to the people who did, remember... without them you would have nothing to add to and call your own.

That is not what I'm being told. I'm told that it is about ownership by a mod.

Well I'm sure he might if the devs here on xda didn't feel it necessary to keep the update from everyone by only releasing their roms based off it, for an open source community the devs here sure like to act like selfish little internet fame seekers, true open source developers would have shared the update the moment they got their hands on it in unmodified form so everyone could take a stab at it, just goes to show you what xda is really based around

2000 views support this Time to email HTC and request kernel source

Hello I am here to give the email address of HTCs main developer for the thunderbolt. He is in charge of source code for kernel. Be polite when requesting it.
[email protected]
Credit to TeamAndIRC for releasing email address. I'm a messenger
Martin,
I am writing you in regards to the yet unreleased kernel source for the HTC Thunderbolt. I have emailed HTC's primary support address multiple times, and have received no satisfactory responses, other than the standard response of 90-120 days.
I understand that Android is mostly released under the Apache license, but we all know that the linux kernel still falls under the GPL license. The GPL license has no conditions in it allowing for a grace period to release the source code. This means that HTC has been in violation of the GPL license for the past week, as the kernel source code still remains unreleased.
There is a large enthusiast community behind the Thunderbolt, and it would be in HTC's best interest to comply with open source agreements.
If you could please facilitate the release of the kernel source code, it would be appreciated, and further complications from the open source community can easily be avoided.
Thank you,

Honestly, I truly wish I had the resources to truly threaten them with legal action. Companies should be taught that just because they're large companies, doesn't mean they have the right to abuse this kind of stuff like they do.
I know TeamAndIRC is trying to get someone who is a lawyer involved

Give them time and be patient...then always release the source code...usually a month or two after release...its how they work.

This. Verizon's probably got a hand in trying to delay the source code as well.
Its new...get over it really. They will release it when they are ready.
Kernel source is suppose to be released the day of the device being released. Or before the release date. It's a legal term of using linux or any gpl code.

[Q] What is KANGING?

The reason I pose this question is because it is a precursor to a debate point which I later want to get to but in order to do that, there needs to be an objective definition.
What I would is for people to share their understanding of what KANGING is.
To me, KANGING is taking another developers code and creating something else with it.
This can be as simple as compiling android with an extended menu.
You pretty much got it. To copy and make your own or just to copy.
I don't like the term. The whole point of open source software is to allow others to freely take and modify your own code, which was also built off of other people's code. As long as credit is given where due, what the heck is the problem? Sure, I understand taking someone's work, barely modifying it, and calling it your own can be looked down upon, but as long as credit is given to the original author(s), it is allowed.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
Where did the term originate? Did someone way back in the day rip off code and his name happened to be Kang?

Pretty sure this is more of where the term came from and why it upsets people, but add "without permission and/or credit."
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Yeah, if someone specifically licenses their code to require permission... It is not as if the original coder asked permission from Google, Samsung, or whoever else to use their code. They made it freely available so anyone can freely modify and release it for free, as well. I think people here need to accept that fact. This is what is so great about open source software. However, if someone is releasing your modified work as their own without giving credit, that is a problem.

Just to put something else out there based on this, what if the credit is in the source code. Just doesn't appear on the release page because of some random reason.
Does the definition change? Is it still KANG? Is it stolen? What's the thoughts?

This is where I would disagree, giving credit on a forum post isn't necessarily better than having the credits in the source code. Thinking as a developer, it would be much more important to me to have my name on top of a code snippet.
I would also like to point to XDA Rule #12 for this thinking.

I think it is the same thing as plagiarism. It's just wrong. You should ask permission and attribute. Don't take others work and pass it off as your own. Basic ethics.

ATT: nOObs & DEVS, JUST A REMINDER!

I'm here not to bash XDA but just to remind every nOOb and DEV what XDA is all about, this weekend was probably the worst time to be a member of this community and it has brought me shame and embarrassment to be a member. I just wanted to remind EVERYONE whether your new, old, or a Developer that we are all ONE we are not here to bash peoples work or criticize one another but to RESPECT our work that we put in the community whether its a ROM, a PORT, KERNEL, KANG or ADVICE/TIPS....
As you have all seen every forum has 4 threads to it: General, Q & A, Development and Themes & Apps. Let's try to stick our INFORMATION in the proper thread.
1st. If anybody PORTS, or is listing someone else's work PLEASE ask permission FIRST before doing ANYTHING they have put their hard FREE TIME into their own project not to get the recognition they deserve.
2nd. Just because u fixed a certain issue with a ROM doesn't give you the right to start your own thread, its best if you post how the issue was fixed or PM the DEV so they can implement it on their next update.
3rd. nOObs! Please SEARCH before doing anything or posting! This community has been here for years I'm pretty sure whatever your problem or question is it has been answered before in numerous threads done start a new thread PERIOD!! UNLESS its something that u trully 100% couldnt find an answer.
4th. Please explain why someone would start a thread about a problem they are having in Q. & A. Or General about a certain Rom when they can easily go READ the ROMS thread or ask your question there??? Like I said previously there are a million users I'm pretty sure your question has been answered!!
And finally let's RESPECT each other and LEARN TO READ!!! USE THE SEARCH BUTTON!!! POST IN THE CORRECT THREAD!!!! ASK PERMISSION AND GIVE PROPS/THANKS if your using someone else's HARD WORK.
BTW: Finally like it says in the title ITS A REMINDER!! People seem to forget NOT LEARN HOW TO READ!!
Open source means ANYONE can use it to build Android! Using other peoples ROM without permission is not considered OPEN SOURCE.

However, I 100% agree with you that modifying someone else's ROM and not giving credit or asking permission is completely wrong and messed up, but that doesn't mean it's still not OPEN SOURCE. Permission or not, it's all OPEN SOURCE, but yes, people should be giving credit and asking permission first.

Actually the patents are pending....Either way you could at least had the respect to ask me first. I helped you out of the kindness of my heart. I do not take donations for what i do. All I ask is for proper credit. Nothing more.....And you got your idea of "open source" all twisted. Google willingly open sources there Code. Google is under zero obligation to post source code. How ever....The kernel which is linux based falls under GPL License which is a requirement under GPL to be open sourced. No where in the GPL Agreement does "Scripts" or "Tweaks" fall under GPL. So next time do your research before you start speaking non sense.
Now let me be VERY VERY clear in my next statement...DO NOT POST ANYTHING OF MINE IN YOUR ROM WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. Per Xda rules you need to obtain permission from the author of the Rom/Script/kernel before posting and give proper credit. Now I will be watching you like a hawk. I will let this slide this once. DONT LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN.

Well, I never gave up development for GenericGinger so I did nothing wrong. Reviewers removed me from the OP, and said I wasn't maintaining the ROM. So I made my own. Sorry if you feel that way, but I gave you, and everyone else tweaks, and wor credit. Notice the kernel was credited to PDT which is sduvick and ayoteddy, and your tweaks notes are still the same I added my name in as well cause I made adjustments. Other then that, seems same as GOv2 but a bit faster.
Can we get back on topic. ReActiveDisorder should be banned from this thread and JiN1337 should be banned from his if he's even posting there. No body owns a script or text-file "tweaks". You didn't write the code that does something, you just learned of its existence and enabled it. Fighting over INI files... really?

Lmao...."OUR" hard work??? I think you meant to say ayoteddy, sduvick, and reactivedisorders hard work. Ayoteddy and sduvick made the base rom and theme and I supplied the scripts and tweaks...All you did was kang it and change the title. Lmfao.
Ya our "hard work".....you are the reason this device is dead. Im glad the scripts i gave you were nothing more then a bunch of random mumbo jumbo. I had a feeling from the gecko you were shadey. Oh well...reviewers has the real scripts You sir just got punk'd.

Half of the tweaks you used are in here, and they have been proven to work. Mhm.
