WP7 Port to HP Pre 3 - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
With the future of webOS up in the air it just occurred to me it might be possible to port wp7 to the pre 3 in the same manner it was done on the hd2. The internals of the pre 3 are more or less identical to the windows phone mango specs and the boot loader is unlocked.
Aside from licensing issues, does anyone know if this would be possible?
The pre 3 is a great price of hardware, like an ergonomic dell venue pro, shame to see it go to waste.

The problem is the drivers, not the specs. The HD2 was easy, because it already runs a CE-based OS and also the hardware is almost identical to the HD7, which of course has WP7 drivers. For the Pre 3, you'd need to find (or write) CE 6/7 drivers for all its hardware, build them into a custom ROM, and... yeah, it's probably possible, but it wouldn't be easy.

It'd be easier to go the other way now that webOS is open, I wouldn't be surprised to see webOS on the HD2 at some point.

how will we know? no-one got ttheir hands on either yet?
its a completely subjective and pointless questin (IMHO)
google is the wolf in sheeps clothing. they call MS the bad guy while they own the world's info.
I'll take a windows HTC phone since this community will support it way better
Considering no one has WM7 how do you expect to get a decent tally from the poll at this point?
With that being said - IF the older windows mobile software will run on WM7, then I will stick with windows mobile simply because there are more apps avail.
WP7S looks much sexier than Android.
imagine if possible, what you chose?
The Android 2.x has multitasking (rather than The Android 1.x which has no multitasking)
In contrast, the Windows Phone 7 has no multitasking (while the older Windows Mobile/Phone has multitasking, including the oldest Pocket PC)..
And I REALLY NEED MULTITASKING, so I choose the Android
web 2.0 crap
i hate social networks...
stay on windows phone classic
hmm update:
android gets me
still hatin social networks....
currently the chances to be able to move any current htc device to wm7 are much much smaller then moving them to android 2
wm7 is not a follow up for wm6.X it's a different branch's which don't run wm6.x programs and require hardware other wm6.X devices don't have
so chances are if you really really like wm7 you need to get a new device
and hope that many developers head in that direction rather then android, iphone or nokia n900
because old pocketpc apps don't work

Windows Embedded CE 6.0 features a completely redesigned kernel, which supports over 32,768 processes, up from 32 process support of the previous versions. Each process receives 2GB of virtual address space, up from 32MB.
well, seems like the only choice we've left is android.
& wm 6.xx is terrible.
Judging from what i saw at MWC 2010 i'll personally stick
to winmo "classic", that's what they are calling WM6.X now.
WM 7 looked very lame and boring to me. Look like it's
bound to be a major setback for MS and a significant
growth in the Android arena. A change to radical.

1.6 DOES multitasking.
Anyway, Android is better than WM in many aspects..
From Touch Pro to HTC Hero. Too bad it has the same qualcomm crappy procesor, but it's faster than WM and way more handy (notification bar simply rocks).
And about WM7.. I don't like it. A total downgrade.. IMO. RIP WM
So yes, i vote for Android 2
RIP Windows Mobile... I originally got you because you were so hackable and customizable, but this new version just sounds like an iPhone clone two years too late....
Android is definitely going to be where it's at for the phone hacker community (it seems...)
i will not be surprised if someone in XDA-DEV managed to cook a rom for touch pro that will support windows mobile 7..even now, with their help,we are able to boot our touch pro with android OS..just wait and see..

LG Fathom to WP7 ?

Hey all,
I know this is another one of those "can my phone handle WP7" threads that we all HATE to see but, My TP2 broke and Asurion is offering me a LG Fathom. After looking over the specs, I am wondering why it would not be capable of running Windows Phone 7.
It's got a smaller display but, it does have 1ghz snapdragon processor and very compareable to a HD2 (accept a lot smaller), it's newer than the HD2 and from the factory come with 6.5.3.
Has anyone attemped or thought at putting Windows Phone 7 on it ?
In case anyone has a broken TP2 and has the Insurance, they have no more...
We have one of these lying around in the shop as well, and would be nice to have as a WP7 development device. Anyone have any thoughts on the porting?
screen it is not multitouch, disregarding processor capabilities...
Regards!
Could an android device have wp7 ported over to it?

In theory it should not be a problem if the device in question has a WVGA screen, Snapgragon chipset and 512 or more MB of RAM. In practice you will need a compatible bootloader and so far only the HD2 has one....created for the occasion.
On the HD2 it's done the following way:
1. The original bootloader is hacked, so you can flash any unsigned stuff you may desire.
2. A second bootloader is flashed that goes in the chain after the original hacked bootloader.
3. For WinMobile 6.5 you use the original bootloader. Android and Windows Phone 7 are flashed and booted by the second bootloader, which is a completely custom creation.
You will need something like MAGLDR on the HD2 for any device in order to get a second OS running as the original bootloader will probably not support the needed partition layouts etc. Other than that every Desire, Nexus One or similar device should be perfectly capable of running WP7.

[Q] WP7 on iPhone 4?

Is there any possibility of dual-booting IOS and and WP7 on an iPhone 4? I'm really interested in playing the Xbox Live games on my iPhone. So that's my main goal. If there is another way to do this, I would be interested in the info. Thanks!
Most likely not. Android can be ported to the iPhone because it is open source whereas windows phone 7 os is very much closed source.
Also, windows phone has special hardware requirements and, if im not mistaken, the Iphone 4 does NOT use the same qualcomm chipset as windows phone.
You would also have issues with your hi-res screen becasue windows phone only supports WVGA at the moment.
So it is probably not possible,
Sorry.
Without any source it won't be possible at all. That's why people have been successful in porting Android to the iPhone series.
Thanks. I figured that there was probably a reason why it hadn't been done yet. I appreciate the info!
Why dont ya just get a windows phone?
Ported OS to another phone will never work as smoothly as a real device dedicated for the job.
If you seen android running on the iPhone it was never really that usable. Even when i had the HD2 Android was still buggy and laggy.
May later be
moved to Q&A
There is OS7, but it is a visual port only and still works just like iOS under the hood. I used it for a while on my iPhone 4.

Windows Phone 7.5 Mango On Compatible Android Phone Hardware ??

Hi, I have seen many android phones with a decent specs that look much better than WP7 phone currently on the market.
WP7 Phones mostly use almost out dated hardware of android phones. Example, new Nokia Lumia 900 use Snapdragon 1.4ghz single core and Adreno 205 which are mostly found in last year android phones.
so if the same hardware found in android phones, is there any custom WP7/WP7.5 ROM for similar Android Phones's hardware ?
any "strong" dev can port it ?
2 questions.
there are skins that allow your android device to look like wp7. why not try that?
since wp7 runs perfectly well on single core wvga resolution so why not get a proper wp?
if i'm not wrong, wp7 is not designed to work with dual core, and anything higher than wvga resolution so it isn't that easy. also, people who like the look and feel of wp7 would tend to do my first point, while those who really want the functionality of wp7 would just get a wp, so the market isn't that big.
i could be wrong though

Whilst it is true that nearly any developer could port it seeing how close some windows phone 7 and android phones are in terms of hardware. Take the desire s and the radar for example.
However windows phone 7 is not an open source operating system like android. Effectively it is the same a a standard desktop version of windows in terms of the legality of installing it. You need to buy a license and the only way to do this is buy a phone with it pre installed. This license is also non transferable. Also Microsoft record a hardware ID for each phone they license wp7 to run on and this ID is required to use features such as the app store and xbox live. Whilst you could port it you wouldn't be able to use 90% of the features not due to incompatibility but due to the fact that the Microsoft servers wouldn't let you.
Also are you aware that by asking someone to port it you are violating the forum rules with regard to piracy?

That's rather surprising, but probably only possible because the hardware of the HD2 is *very* close to the hardware of some "true" WP7 phones, especially display resolution.
Display is important because WP7 so far is strongly resolution dependent - it simply won't run with anything else than 800 x 480. Maybe with the right drivers the OS itself would run, but countless apps would probably produce nonsense with another resolution.
im gona try this found that some devices like lumia 610 / 510 / and samsung galaxy s duos have almost same specifications but problem is that androids have less gpu and wont do with windows phone but it would be alot more faster if we do that

it would be highly unlikely for it to be ported to any windows phone 7 device as it runs a different software core then wp7. at the core of wp7.x is windows mobile and at the core of wp8 is windows so likely many of the drivers would not be compatible any more... and even if it could be it would likely suffer from very poor performance. and on top of it our device is not all that popular of a device ... so if I had to rate the likelihood of a port on a one to ten scale. One being not happening and Ten being it's practically written in stone - a 2 maybe a 3
sorry ... try one of the 7.8 roms if you want the look of 8 right now

Id actually give it a 5 or 6 it will be difficult but far from impossible, we have already seen wp8 running on the HD2 which has the same specs as the arrive, and other first generation WP7 phones, the first generation phones are fully capable of running wp8 as far as the hardware is concerned its more just a matter of compatibility with drivers and such.

HD2 has SD card slot and known configuration. You all are invited to HaRET WP7 testing. When finished, HTC7Pro hardware can be able to host much different operating systems.
