GWallet News! We Might get Google Wallet!!!! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Here is news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/02/google-wallet-nexus-atandt/

I thought Google wallet requires the secure element that our phones don't have? I believe unless Google wallet is updated to use the sim as a secure element we won't get it. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium

Doesn't it run off of the nfc chip. The software would encrypt it right?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk

Yes it uses NFC for the communications but Google wallet uses the secure element which is not in all NFC enabled phones(meaning it's not in ours but it's in the nexus S and galaxy nexus). without the secure element Google Wallet won't work unless they update it to work without a secure element. the secure element is not just software, it's an actual physical feature that is missing from our phones.
Also I just installed the latest Google Wallet from the market on the phone and got an "insufficient secure element" error message so I suppose this argument holds water.

People have suggested that AT&T could issue the secure element by sending out new sim cards that have it included.
But we all know how slow AT&T can be...maybe by 2015 the Skyrocket will have it.

So the fact that our phone had nfc is useless. One would think there should be a standard.
Lol I don't know anybody else with a skyrocket therefore the nfc chips is 100% useless if I can't pay with it either. Lol

Google Wallet?

Has anyone got Google Wallet actually working on their skyrocket? I'm dying to go to Mc.Donald's and swipe my phone! the look on the peoples faces would be so funny. but anyways. Is anyone actually working on it to bring it our phones?
Well one: you need to be on android 2.3.7 or above and two: I believe the skyrocket is lacking major NFC capabilities (much like the i-777) not 100% on the NFC part though.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
This has been answered in the forum many many times. The SkyRocket does not have the "secure eliment" required to run Google Wallet. It might be possible (in the future) to use a "sim card" as a secure eliment if the sim card and the google wallet app allows it. However, this is doubtful because of AT&T's alliance with "ISIS". NFC runs just fine on the skyrocket if you are using a ROM that enables it. Other financial technologies are on the horizon that might actually trump ISIS and Google Wallet but more than likely will also require some sort of SIM security unless they use NFC in conjunction with dialing verification.

Ur both partially right, the phone does require both gingerbread 2.3.7 and "secure element" is actually some hardware that our phones r physically missing, there is however talk of a similar card application. As for NFC, our phones do possess this, as long as ur using the stock battery, the nfc antenna is integrated into it.

Went ahead and flashed it for the fun of it. Constant fc's of nfc service upon reboot. Oh well.
I didn't expect it to work since it did say it required the touchwiz framework. nandroid ftw

Anyone think the new Wallet update will.make it easier to get it working on the One X? Since the card info is now in the cloud, I don't see why phone/carrier should matter anymore.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the new Google Wallet still uses the secure element portion of the NFC chip which we cannot use because we do not have the proper keys for this device. Without it we cannot write data to the secure element and thus can't process google wallet transactions.

That's my understanding as well. It's not just the ROM; the NFC chip has to be able to set up a secure connection to the receiver.
But AT&T is allowing it on the GNex and the SGSIII, so who knows?

So, in order to fix the "No SMX Detected" error we need to get NFC libs that have SmartMX enabled and don't break NFC.
I know wallet was working on the international One X in the Modaco forums. Does the One XL share the same NFC hardware as the One X?
I know they have different processors; but, was unsure if the NFC hardware is different too.

Yeah, I tried the libs from the international OneX last night and found that out too.
Maybe we could ask HTC if they could recompile the libs with the header turned on.
I know when i was at the Aria forum we, and other people, petitioned Qualcomm to compile their user space library for ARMv6 after they only released them compiled for ARMv7, and they actually did it was awesome! Gave us the best hardware acceleration I'd seen on that little phone. Props to Qualcomm BTW. But maybe we could see if HTC could do something similar.
NFC Secure Element
Could these patches be applied to the OneXL kernel source to enable the Secure Element and enable card emulation so wallet could work?
http://nemik.net/code/android-nfc/Nfc-app.diff
http://nemik.net/code/android-nfc/libnfc-nxp.diff
It was written for the Nexus S which uses the same nfc chip that the One XL uses, the PN544.
At the very least, maybe it could be modified to work with the HOX.
If we should petition anyone it should be att? aren't they the ones who aren't allowing it to be used on the hox? Yeah it would be sweet if you guys could get it working though.... Wait someone should start a petition especially considering I'm sure it was a way to sell more s3s well now they wanna sell hox+ so maybe they would be willing to listen

Couldn't care less either way. Storing sensitive financial info on your phone is a dumb idea, particularly on a rooted phone which is about a secure as a laptop connected directly to the Internet with an administrator account enabled and secured with the password 'password'. I am no privacy freak or security nut but taking that kind of risk with your phone particularly in the absence of a legal framework to protect you is nuts. I already have an NFC payment system, it is called a credit card and takes about the same time to pull out of my pocket as my phone. And when it breaks I can get a brand new one for free in 24 hrs.

Putting something as simple as a screen lock on your phone can fix these security issues, a simple app the can remotely wipe your phone can also assure no lost credentials or even track down the phone!
Using a superuser/supersu app with a pin to grant superuser permissions helps too
A lost credit/debit card on the other hand can lead to all kinds of problems until you know its gone and you need to call and report it stolen
By then its possible someone could be buying themselves some new toys
I'd rather carry my ID and my phone around instead of my phone, ID, credit cards, debit cards, and cash
Just my two cents

Incase anyone else is interested Verizon fixed the problem overnight. So you can now install ISIS btw you don't need the nfc sim installed to install the app. Not sure about actually using /setting it up. I believe you will need that sim to do anything in the app.

I'm In Michigan and I installed the app but it would not let me set it up. So I tweeted to verizonsupport and they sent me a SIM card that is compatible with Isis. I received the SIM card today and setup the account. I also recieved the free ten dollars. So now i have to see if it works at a store.
I encourage everybody to pass on ISIS and the carriers bull****.

I just got the OTA from VZW last week and since I saw ISIS in the change list I figured I'd give it a go even though I'm in NY not SLC/Austin.
I called Verizon and they sent me a NFC SIM, and I still had trouble getting it to go but I got it eventually. It was a pain in the neck to set up and add cards but I got it going. On Amex's page about ISIS it says: "Use it where American Express contactless payments are accepted.* Just look for the universal symbol for contactless payments or signs that say "Isis Ready™."
by saying "or" it seems to imply not just in ISIS ready places like SLC/Austin, but anywhere AMEX ExPay is accepted, which is all over the country! I didn't see the same about Chase.
I'll give it a go today in NY and I'll let you know if it worked.
Overall, I must say so far, I like the app better than Google Wallet. It seems like they charge the card direct as opposed to Google which has a system of charging their virtual MC first then charging you, (This could be dis-advantageous regarding benefits that the card would give you, like bonus points at certain category merchants etc.). The only major problem is that it only takes Chase, Amex, and Cap1. but that isn't such a problem for me because I pretty much only use Chase and Amex cards.
I've got it installed, but it will not let me set it up. I live in Pittsburgh, so it may not be a test area. It's strange that it kicks me out of the app though.

Update: I successfully used ISIS to pay at a Brooklyn, NY RiteAid store. I had it set to use a Amex card and I checked straight away and there was a pending charge that appeared normal (unlike Google Wallet transactions which would show up as GOOGNFC*name-of-merchant). When I tried to pay, nothing was happening, so I took off the slim case I have on the back of my phone (GW never had any problems working through this case) and then tried again. Even then nothing happened, I was about to give up and began to pull out my wallet to get a real card, when the terminal came to life and said "Processing Contacless Payment". I'm not sure if it managed to read through my case or if it only read after I removed the case, but if it's the latter, that might be due to the fact that ISIS doesn't utilize the built in NFC chip rather it uses the one embedded into the SIM which is obviously much smaller (the built in one relies on an antenna as big as the battery) and therefore has a much shorter range.
The bottom line is so far I still like it better than GW, my only concern is that it mentioned that if it detects unusual root access in the OS, it will not operate. I don't plan on staying stock unrooted for too much longer!

Is Google wallet/MasterCard Paypass on way out?

I just noticed that Walgreens is not activating any of their nfc payment systems because of security issues and just today I found out that wawa gas stations no longer have them due to some type of issues they were having with malware with their system. Seems more companies are discontinuing their use over setting the systems up.
I hope they get this supposed security problem figured out soon. I love using my phone to pay.

This was only ever a pipe dream to be honest. Too many ways it can be hacked, far too insecure for real world use.
Far, far too unsafe for public use. You can hack it with stickers for goodness sake.
Not to mention, people are far too moronic in the way and guard they use their phones to make this work. On an average day at Uni, I see about 200 phones I could nick without them noticing it. And consequentially use to pay for anything, because apparently people are not smart enough to realize that a pattern lock leaves a fingertrail. And their code is pretty much always a date of relevance. Which they've undoubtably mentioned somewhere on their Facebook.
I don't think the reason is security on the phone but on the unit in the store. The phone itself is more secure than using a debit card. If someone steals your card they are able to use it at most stores without ever being asked for id. My phone not only has a passcode but once you try to use the wallet app it asks for another code. Overall I think the security issue is with the store and if that can be resolved nfc payments can continue.

Because the NFC tag can be set to many things like storing and sending the info used to pay. And it doesnt take much to reprogram the tag, They are about as safe as a debt card which we all know is not 100%

What tag are you talking about. The phones use an nfc chip and the stores use an nfc system. No one uses a sticker. The stickers your talking about are the ones sold that can let you perform tasks on your phone. What do they have to do with making secure payments from the phone.

Its the Same tech. I installed these in a few stores and saw how easy it would be to allow it to be reprogrammed.
That's why just like if you see a weird looking atm and don't use it you should not use an nfc scanner. Plus you can tell if their is some weird sticker on the nfc scanner. And this proves again that using your phone is not unsecure it's the system that is at the store that can be compromised by idiots. Plus if your Google wallet app doesn't activate after swiping then that should be an indication of something going wrong. Plus those nfc task stickers do not have access to the Google wallet app. So what your saying is flawed and not the reason why stores are removing the units. I think the units are being tampered with by people or the store employees and stores don't want to deal with this. With updated nfc systems this security issue can be resolved. It's just a matter if this makes money for Google. If it doesn't they will just scrap it

Just found out there's a new more secure nfc payment system. Saw it for the first time at toysrus. The swipe area for nfc payments is built in right to the touchscreen where you would enter prompts. This is a lot more secure and a solution to all these so called sticker problems. No one can put a sticker on the screen as it will block everyone from using it. Hopefully nfc payments get back on track. Just used mine at cvs and McDonald's
