[Q] Very strange brick that needs solving - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Tried to flash Valhalla, installed the package, rebooted, and now it just replays the bootup, first Samsung Galaxy S, then strange pixelated lines across screen. Computer doesn't detect it, but it does go into download mode

Like I answered in your thread on Rootz,
You're missing Gingerbread bootloaders since you're currently on Froyo.
Flash the "Download SMS KJ6 (beta2d) Kernel Stock Rom with Bootloaders"
You can get it here:
http://forum.xda-dev...d.php?t=1358498

Haha thank you. But now, how do I get it unbricked? It's stuck where it is, and the computer doesn't recognize it?

Can you get into download mode?

Yes, but the computer doesn't recognize it. I have the drivers, it's just not recognizing the phone

The one-clicks utilize Heimdall vs. ODIN for flashing. If you have the Samsung USB drivers installed, Kies Mini, etc, uninstall those. Then follow the instructions on the one-click page. It should prompt you to install the Heimdall drivers.
Let us know if that works.

I do have Heimdall, but I will certainly try that, thank you.

So when I flash these bootloaders, will my phone go into Valhalla, Bionix (What I had before), or stock?

No, it still does not recognize the phone. Whenever I connect it, it says that there was a malfunction in the usb device, and it cannot recognize it.

When you run the one-click it'll prompt you to install the drviers. It then launches a program called Zadig. Under the "Options" menu, ensure you select "List All Devices". Under the drop-down menu you should see a Samsung device.
Also note that your phone needs to be in download mode for all of that to happen/work.

It is in download mode, and it doesn't come up in Zadig. I already tried checking all devices, but the computer doesn't recognize it. It says: Unknown Device. Samsung Device isn't an option. The computer literally doesn't recognize it. Also, I did try to install the drivers to the "Unknown Device" however, it did not work.

Boot up the phone but not into download mode (if possible).
Plug the phone into the computer via the USB cable
Open a command prompt: Click on Start, Run, type in cmd and press Enter.
Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 and press Enter.
Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.
On the menu bar, click View and select Show hidden devices
Expand USB (might say Universal Serial Bus controllers)
Look for anything like "Samsung Android USB Composite Device", right-click it, and select Uninstall
Once all of those are gone, close the Device Manager and the command prompt
Put the phone back into download mode and try the one-click again.

There are none, but I've always had it be USB Mass Storage Device. Should I uninstall those?
Oh, and I found it in portable devices, and uninstalled it

if they're Samsung USB devices you probably can remove them.

Okay, that's not gonna work. It says: Installing new hardware, etc, etc, etc, and then it comes back as unknown

I'm not familiar with how to flash anything unless using ODIN or CWM. I know drhonk's kernels http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194032 have red CWM but I've always used ODIN to get them installed.
What problem are you having with the drivers? Maybe you just need to update/reinstall?
If your phone used to be recognized, try plugging it in to different USB. If not, try another microUSB cable.
The same thing happened to my sister's SGS4G after I flashed Valhalla for her. Her laptop wouldn't recognize it, but my desktop did, so we swapped cables and it worked.
the thing is that the drivers wont install again -_-

What OS & 32 or 64-bit? Did you try to install over the currwnt installation or did you uninstall the broken ones first?

Weird. Which drivers are you installing? I'm wanting to say mine installed with Kies Mini though I could be wrong. You can grab the 64-bit version of the USB drivers here: http://drivers.softpedia.com/dyn-postdownload.php?p=96693&t=4&i=1
Not sure if that's the same ones you are trying to install or not, but may be worth a shot. Another possibility is that the drivers are partially installed. Try this (sorry if I made this seem novice-like, but I just want to try and be clear):
Open a command prompt
type this, followed by Enter: set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
type this, followed by Enter: devmgmt
Once Device Manager opens, click View on the menu bar and select Show Hidden Devices
Expand both "Modems" & Universal Serial Bus controllers" & uninstall anything that has Samsung Android USB Composite Device, Samsung USB Composite Device, Samsung Mobile Device, Samsung Mobile Modem, etc.
Once the devices are gone, maybe reboot (probably not necessary, but why not?) and try the USB driver install again.
Ever have any luck?

phresh. i would uninstall the current drivers. then try running ccleaner to clear out your registry. then reboot. install the 64 bit drivers that are found in the bible. once you install the drivers, reboot again. then try plugging in the phone.
make sure your firewall and antivirus are off when you do this for the first time. as stated above, make sure the usb devices are not installed in device manager.
if it installs, unplug the phone and let it disconnect from the computer and then plug it back in to make sure it was isntalled properly. if it was, put it in download mode and let it install the drivers for that. now you should be good to go.

[Q] Did I brick my phone? [Solved]

Hello all,
Firstly thank you for the great development and help the community is providing for GS4G. From the time I bought this phone (few weeks ago), I have been playing around with different ROMs. I try GB roms and ICS roms every now and then. Always go back to GB using 1 Click's.
Yesterday when I was going the 1-Click Heimdall, it failed in between with some error. After this, I am unable to boot into the OS or recovery or download mode. It comes to a screen which tells me that the firmware upgrade was interrupted and asks me to use recovery in Kies. I tried this, but Kies does not even recognize my phone anymore. Windows shows my phone as "unknown device". I tried uninstalling and re-installing Kies, but still no use. I hope there is some way to get my phone back.
I read somewhere about a USB Jig that could get you into download mode. I have ordered it from Amazon and it may take a couple of days. Meanwhile, if any of you can help, it would be great. Thanks!
youre soft bricked, this is fixable. The firmware upgrade interrupted screen is the same thing as download mode. try reinstalling the drivers which i think are found in the sgs4g BIBLE thread. after that, plug in your phone and make it go to the firmware upgrade interrupted screen and see if it installs the drivers. read lumin's guide. it explains everything step by step. im going to try to link it here soon.

Sounds like you need to run zadig.exe in the Drivers folder of the Windows distribution of Heimdall.
If that doesn't work, right-click on (My) Computer, select Manage, then select Device Manager. In the panel that opens, find your device, right-click on it and you can then look at its properties and potential change the driver there.
(Yes, this kind of shenanigans is another of the reasons I really dislike Windows)
Ok so what you should try is downloading the heimdall suite
https://github.com/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/downloads
Extract and open the drivers folder and run zadig. Click devices/show all devices and if your phone is plugged in and in download mode it should see it. Install drivers and it should say drivers successfully installed. Then run your one-click jar file and it should work.

Try different USB ports on your computer.
Install Ubuntu (not totally kidding on that one, it will install side-by-side with Windows)
When is that jig getting there? One time I had a similar situation and I built myself a jig and it worked like a charm. Phone goes straight into download mode. I dunno if this will resolve your situation but I'm pretty sure this isn't the first time we've seen someone with this problem and then after trying several different computers and USB cables we usually say maybe your phone's USB Jack is messed up? And then the thread goes dead.

Have you uninstalled any drivers? Download and install the drivers from the bible thread if you haven't. Like suggested, try different USB ports and different USB cables. Sometimes it takes more than one try for some reason.

Have you rebooted your comp at all?? If no that might be the problem.
SUCCESS !!
Thanks a lot for all your suggestions.
Here is what worked:
- I opened device manager and uninstalled ALL USB devices (Yes ALL, not just Samsung, Android etc) and unfamiliar Storage devices.
- Then I rebooted once so that all other device drivers could be installed.
- Then I rebooted a second time and let it install any remaining drivers.
- Then I plugged in the phone and it installed the driver and now it started showing the correct device name
- Now, I ran the Heimdall 1-click and it opened offered to re-install drivers. I did this.
- After all this, I was able to get 1-Click GB rom installed and now back to VB.
(I think the key was "uninstall all USB devices" and "reboot TWICE")
glad you got it to work. ive had my share of soft bricks with this device and it always takes something different to get it to run right. im starting to think that my computer is alive because of this reason because it just doesnt like to play nice sometimes. LOL

Computers blind to NS4G. Help?

Hey folks.
I have been trying to get my wife's NS4G back to stock to get the JB OTA. I have downloaded all drivers multiple times on multiple computers (windows). I have tried 3 or 4 different USB cables. I have downloaded pdanet. I have downloaded the JAVA SDK and updated everything about it.
My computers cannot connect to the NS4G.
USB debugging is on. When I try to turn on tether, it tells me USB is not plugged in.
I have been able to restore the stock ROM (2.3.7) via CWM, but now I no longer have a recovery. It is still rooted and unlocked. Rom Manager is installed and it will not download CWM Recovery.
I need some way to get a recovery onto it. CMW or stock.
Does ANYONE have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for all suggestions and particularly to the one that will work.

If you are running Windows 7 hold down the shift key and right click then select open command prompt here. type ADB devices and if your drivers are installed then you will see your serial number. Remember to be in fastboot when you install drivers. then use ADB to reboot bootloader. when in fastboot type "fastboot devices" and you should again see your serial number to know that your drivers are all installed correctly. You need to fastboot flash a new recovery image. Hope that helps

Drivers are NOT installed properly then. Drivers are installed on a per device basis. If your phone doesn't get recognized, then they are not installed.
Chances are your device ID isn't found in the .inf file of the drivers. I know back when I rooted my phone over a year ago I had to manually change the inf file and add my device.
If you start your phone in fastboot mode and plug it in, when you go in device manager you should see an unrecognized device with a yellow question mark. Right click it, then Properties, then Details tab. Give me the information in the Device Instance Path.
Will check this out and post info when I get home tonight. Thanks for the input.

Started phone in fastboot mode. Plugged it in and watched Device Manager. Closed device manager and re-opened it for a good refresh. I get nothing new. No unrecognized device and no Android Device like when I plug in my S3. ADB Wireless wont connect.
OK... I just cleared my sd card and was able to install CWM. One hurdle cleared...
I still need to get stock ROM and recovery. Is there anyway to do this WITHOUT being able to connect via adb?
Thanks again for any input.

[Solved] [Q] Bricked Help!

I am afraid I have made a very big n00b mistake.
Let me just say to prior to this goof up, I was well informed of the rooted SG4G world and had successfully flashed CWM and was running on various custom kernels and tweaks. I am currently abroad and had to revert back to my unlocked SG4G as my phone abroad, so my knowledge of the rooting world became somewhat diminished. Now here lies the problem. Earlier this morning, my phone had a random reboot. I decided to try and flash another kernel that I had saved on my phone via SGS Kerenel flasher(which I have used successfully used before). However, I think i may have reverted to the stock kernel that did not run well with all the tweaks I had previously installed. Now when I boot up, I get stuck on the SG4G screen (only for T-Mobile screen). I rebooted into recovery mode but it appears as if I have lost CWM, therefore I can not do a nandroid back up.
My question is: How can I restore my phone and make a nandroid backup without CWM?
I already took matters into my own hands and tried flashing CWM via Haeimdall through the kernel that is suggested in "The Definitive Noobs guide to Flashing and or fixing the SG4G" but Heimdall does not seem to recognize my device. It does say "Device detected" when I enter download mode but it is not giving me the option to click "Start."
Help will be much appreciated since I am relying on my phone while I am abroad and need to fix this ASAP.
Much appreciated and again,
Sorry for the n00b mistake
Take note of the 'kernel' in SGS Kernel Flasher. Not ROM flasher.
Follow the guide in the second link of my signature.
Thank you for the prompt response lumin,
I have followed your guide to the bone but I am unfortunately stuck on a certain step. When I reboot my phone into "Download mode" and connect the USB cable, nothing happens. The command prompt just says "Ready for Flash" and does not proceed to the "Installing Drivers" step.
Any thoughts on this?
I hope this does not mean my phone has become a paperweight and that my computer no longer recognizes the phone via USB .
Edit: According to Heimdall the Device status says "Connected" but according to the the command prompt it says "Device not connected" and "Ready for Flash"
Also, when I first plug in my phone, Windows 7 tells me the "USB device is not recognized"
Hope this doesn't mean we've hit a dead end...
Did you read the notes about removing other drivers that may have been installed on your computer for your phone?

Yes I did. I installed usbdeview before I began the process and deleted anything Android/Samsung related.
Windows doesn't seem to recognize my phone but Heimdall does say the "Device Status" is connected.
Any other thoughts?
When I first connect to my pc (holding buttons to get in download mode, gb bootloaders) I get same msg. But, once I press the volume button and enter download (Andy & shovel screen), the computer(Odin) sees it and that not recognized pop up goes away. Are you sure you got a proper/good cable?

If Heimdall see's it, it's soft bricked and fixable by flashing the right stuff. Still getting into download mode, it can be fixed.

That is great news.
But how exactly do I flash "the right stuff?"
I noticed that when I plugged my SG4G to attempt the "Installing Drivers" step via CMD, my laptop installed the drivers automatically and said "the device is ready to use." Does this constitute as "Installed Drivers" step completed and I can proceed to flashing KJ6 Heimdall via one click?
Thanks,
Eurik

I am using a data cable that I believe is from an old "V-cast" phone. I am not using a Samsung Galaxy USB cable but I have not had a problem with transferring files to and from my phone from my laptop so I assume it is not the cable... unless I am mistaken?
Use your cable that came with the phone. Just because the cable will transfer files doesnt mean it will work with heimdall.
You keep mentioning installing drivers through cmd line. While it does show the cmd line in the background - Zadig should open giving you a GUI to install/replace the drivers.
Is Zadig opening when you run the One-Click? Also, do you still have Samsung drivers installed on your computer? Go to My Computer > Uninstall Programs and look.

Hello lumin and thank you again for your prompt responses,
I checked again to see if there were any drivers installed and you were in fact correct. The KIES program slipped by my findings. I uninstalled it and again uninstalled anything Samsung/Android related via usbdeview.
I thought this might do the trick but Zadig is not popping up when I plug my USB cable in my "Download ready" Samsung. The CMD does read "Ready for flash" and Heimdall says its connected. Should I just go ahead and run Heimdall? WIll Zadig pop up after I click the "flash" button. If I am not mistaken, your tutorial says it should automatically pop up, which in my case, it is not.
Also, eollie did mention I need a the Samsung Galaxy S USB cable that came with my phone. I am not currently using that. Could the cable be the culprit to my issue?
I really appreciate everybody's help to my problem.
Thank you all,
Eurik
If it says connected in Heimdall and flash is enabled - then yes - flash. It does not have to be a Samsung cable. The cable will either work or not work. And it sounds like yours is working.

Alright lumin,
One more step complete, one more problem.
I got to the step where Zadig shows up. The drivers even installed and I got a message saying my "Device is ready to use."
Now the new problem.
When I select "List all devices" I do not see the option to select "Samsung USB Composite Device."
4 devices are listed and the include: HP webcam-101 (Interface 0). HP webcam-101 (Composite Parent), Gadget serial, and Gadget serial Control (interface 0).
No Samsung USB Composite device though.....

Did you go to advanced or whatever the item is and choose list all devices?

Sure did.
Mentioned in my post that I selected "List all devices."
Any other thoughts?
Use Gadget Serial. Others have reported the same situation and successful used Gadget Serial. And/or try a fresh USB port.
