cm7 v sense - HTC Sensation

as i know,cm7 and the miui are the most rocking rom in android, but im wondering that why our sensation forum is not ?isn't cm7 performance can beat over sense?

CM7 and Miui are great add-on fir Sensation, I buy HTC for Sense UI ,smooth scrolling, great email apps, navigation and great widget. Screw those who said Sense is slow. If I want AOSP I would've get Samsung. To me AOSP sux balls and boring.

i've tried both and didn't like them at all

here's the bottom line. Sense is cooler looking (except the ICS sense 3.5, to me it looks like ****. seriously. wtf. ). It IS slower. People who said it isn't are in denial. Sense is just really heavy due to the framework and ****.
Aosp is boring. as EpSix said. but, it's fast. muuuuch faster than any sense rom. Doesn't matter what "aosp" rom it is. CM7, MIUI, CM9. It's all faster than sense. Problem is it doesn't look as good out of the box. The customizations are endless when a stable build comes out. Just take CM7 + ADW Launcher + Theme chooser. it's heaven.

I'm sorry if I have offended you in any way, but I am a more minimalistic person. I do not like fancy neon colors. to me it's an eye sore. but that's what sense gives. so I guess my point wasn't valid. it's up to the user, but to me it's ****.

No offence taken. lol
I just seen it as a way to show off my device, and what can be done with sense. And the fact that you say sence is cooler looking.
Everbody has the on way, other wise we would all be using the same rom, like sheep.
The only thing that i dont get. Is why people buy HTC to use Aosp roms.
Im sorry if my post came across as being a little agressive.
Steve

I bought HTC because it was between the Sensation and the S2. The S2 woud've cost me 65,000won vs the Sensation's 56-57,000won. (In Korea, you don't buy the phone outright unless you want to drop 850,000won. So you pick a plan and a phone and pay off the phone in installments.)
I liked Sense but wanted ICS already so I flashed a custom ROM.

Why shouldn't they? Unless you buy a Nexus device you're going to get a manufacturer GUI, whether it's Sense with HTC, Touchwiz with Samsung, Blur with Motorola, etc.

The nasty clock. The ****ty outerglow on all the icons, the ****e textured background and the horrendous weather icons.

Installed CM7 and MIUI and never looked back. ICS is awesome too!

the last good Sense was 3.0, which is why I'm still on it. 3.5 and 3.6 feel clunky and I haven't met anyone who prefers the soft gray over 3.0s hard grays and blacks.
AOSP roms offer the best battery life and smoothest experience, but there aren't any rock solid ones for the Sensation yet.
as for MIUI, it has always been very slow and laggy. maybe if it were GPU accelerated, but no goddamn way is that going back on my phone.

Sense for apps and widgets.
Miui for iphone look
Aosp for plain look

Sense UI sucks!
First of all the calendar app doesn't even show titles of events on the boxes(you have to click on them to see it), which is USELESS if you use calendar. You might as well take an actual, physical wall calendar and just mysteriously draw boxes for all your appointments, because that's all you get with Sense calendar.
Personalize button stuck on the main screen is also retarded lol, who the bloody hell is changing their wallpaper/ringtone that frequently to need it stuck on their main screen! Calm down with the uber personalization, I just want to use my phone!
The USB cable screen is a hulking behemoth of steaming poo, why are there like THIRTY THOUSAND OPTIONS FOR USING A USB CABLE?! The first time I saw it I had to change my undergarments. Stock Android just has "connect to pc" and then.....what do you know? "disconnect from pc."
And on the dialer screen, god help you if you decide to call someone you don't have a photo for. The giant huge ass green Android that pops up on the screen with a white background will blind you and scar your eyes forever with its obnoxious ugly huge size. Jesus phone, calm your ass down, I just want to make a call!
Want to use secure lockscreen? Good luck! You can't even see who's calling you, because they are so desperate that you use their nifty HTC lockscreen. You have to use two lockscreens! What a bunch of ****!
I also always hear people talk about their HTC widgets. Well who the bloody hell in their right mind would want a huge ass clock taking up half the screen? Not to mention you already have a clock(look at the top right corner of your phone) but why buy the Sensation and have a big screen just to put a clock that takes up half the screen on it?! I guess you can look "cool" to your friends, but I prefer a useful home screen!
Not to mention it's LAGGY!
I am currently using CM7, I was using VQ but couldn't stand the reboots. Waiting for a stable CM9 release.

I don't think it's that big a deal. For 'normal' users who may not know about long pressing the home screen and going to the settings Menu it could be fairly useful. Besides, I believe you could re-assign it to something else if you want, at my old Hero could.

Bit big of an exaggeration there ! There's only 5 options (On ICS).
Once again I do think it makes things like Tethering a bit quicker to use. I don't use HTC Sync but I can definitely see why it's on the cable screen, people who use Outlook may need to sync their Calenders every day or so and this just makes it easier.
And on the dialer screen, god help you if you decide to call someone you don't have a photo for. Not sure about this one since I had a call today and my phone was locked and I could see the caller fine. Maybe this is different on ICS and Gingerbread.

I think it was always quick and smooth, didn't notice any lag on Stock Gingerbread.
With ARHD it's quick, the only thing that could be a bit quicker is the Settings Menu, but it's beta so that's a non issue.

This is my third Android Device. Two of them have been from HTC and the other from Motorola. I buy HTC not because of Sense, it does provide some 'eye candy' but its not for me. I go with HTC because of their great build quality and the fact that they are so developer friendly. With the number of ROMs under development, its hard to not find one that doesn't work for you.
AOSP CAN be boring, but with a few modifications, you can make look just as good as Sense:
Check out ADW EX as a launcher replacement. Tons of themes to choose from and easy to swap out icons.
I use Beautiful Widgets for a 'sense like' clock. IMO, it runs circles around the stock sense clock widget, much more customizable.
I do use the Calendar quite frequently. Pure Grid Calendar Widget is just as good as the sense calendar if not better.
Bottom line: to each their own. Some like a minimal look. Others like a flashy setup. Find what works for you and enjoy it. =D

1. There is already a topic about this.
2. There is NO WAY to run the phone without Sense UI without installing a custom ROM. Sense UI is highly integrated into the OS. The video that you see is the EVO running launcher2.apk instead of Rosie.apk (the Sense home app). This is nothing new or exciting, so I wish people would stop making damn topics about it.

For many this is true. For others, I suspect there are multiple motivations for wanting a pure android. I suspect most fall into one or more of 3 categories.
They may want pure as the driven snow Open Source Android
They might want as few of what they don't need as possible for increased resources
They simply don't like the HTC and it's prettiness

You won't save much battery if you turn Sense off. Unless you just have pages full of self updating widgets or something.
love the 2.1 UI.im GOING for that instead of the SENSE
Yeah... I'm looking forward to a stock froyo EVO as soon as possible... best of luck to those with the skill to make it happen
Or at least sense with the stock 2.2 launcher. I actually like the default contacts and messaging apps for sense. Not to mention the clock is way better too, and camera has tap to focus. One thing AOSP has for me though is the look, the white and orange are very appeasing for some reason.

hhmm, goofy quote, I'll say that.
HTC Sense is "attractive", but not for everyone.
The first time I played with Sense was on a Hero ROM on my G1. Then again with the Desire ROM on my Nexus.
Even with the Nexus speed increase, it was definitely NOT sexy.

Favorite part about your rom

This is not a best rom question, but I'm curious what subjectively is your favorite and why? Every Rom thread seems to have at least one person chiming in with "tried them all, this is the best" comment, but surely there are some roms that just don't work out for people.
I'm running miui right now, and I love the level of customization and the little tweaks. One of my favorite features is turning on the flashlight from the lock screen, just a little tweak, but so useful. I also really liked honeysense, but I couldn't get it to stop sucking my battery 5% every hour. What do you all think?

I guess a feature I can highlight is the CPU clock management scheme. It's automated. I like jacking with my phone as much as the next guy, but CPU clocking is a feature I would rather have automated, and from what I can discern the Virtuous devs came up with quite an elegant solution.
[Edit] And I "build" CPU's for a living haha. Funny/strange and funny/haha in a way that is pretty much the one thing I'd just as soon not to have to eff with on my effin phone :-o .

Currently running Honeysense and I love the low battery consumption compared to other ROMs. Other ROMs have just drained my battery crazily. But running Honeysense has prolonged my battery life greatly while giving me my favorite Sense features on my phone. Couldn't be happier with it.
I like cm7 for tweaking the auto brightness settings, customizing the power widgets in the notification bar, and customizing the haptic feedback settings.

When I was looking into buying a phone, I told the guy I was waiting for the iphone5 before making a decision. He then told me that's stupid because no matter what, you're still stuck with ios. I was a little offended because I had jailbroken my iphone and had tweaked it with lockinfo, five icon dock, sb settings, themed with winterboard and more. I showed him my phone thinking I would shut him up, and then he replied that I was half way to android. I couldn't believe this, but the more research I did, I realized that even jailbroken, I was still not able to do everything I wanted to on my phone.
One of the biggest reasons I went Inspire over Atrix was the number of Roms available and the XDA support was much better. On a spec sheet, the Atrix has Inspire beat in almost every category, but I believe the user experience is better on Inspire. Can't be happier.
Finally, for those of you on Virtuous Unity, how would you compare that ROM with RCmix3D? I really liked RC, so I'm wondering what the differences are.

I keep hearing about the RCMix ROM. I will put that one on the list. One issue some of us did find the last day or so is we are not able to connect adb. Weird. I am just waiting for my phone to charge to 100% and I am going to re-flash the ROM full wipe with no apps restore in an effort to see if the issue is the ROM or something in my settings.
Edit" This was fixed with a full un-install / re-install of the Android SDK. Wjy the previous install worked on other ROM's and not this one is unknown. Totally enjoying Virtuous OC'd at 1.4M. I have delved into the built it CPU frequency management scheme and it blows away cheesy CPU apps. Totally elegant.
Running LeeDroid v3.2.1 with full sense 3.0/3D add-on and it's arguably the best rom I've ran to date. The battery isn't the greatest but I keep it plugged in at my desk for the most part so it isn't really an issue for me. I love the visual aspects and animations of this rom like the 3D UI/3D widgets, the lock screen with the Lord of the Rings modded ring and the Photo grid widget.

I was on gingerbeast for a good two weeks, and it is a great rom. The one thing that I couldn't get over was the lack of tap to focus on the camera. I know it's a little thing, but I just missed it so much from my sense based roms. I went to miui as a result, and was surprised at how many customizations it has. I just flashed virtuous unity today, and so far so good!

Sense vs. AOSP

First off...I think I've come to the conclusion I'm a sense guy at heart.
I've used all the major sense ROMs for this bolt. BAMF, Virus (Airborne and Synergy), Chingy stuff, and DroidTh3ory's stuff. (I"m sure a few others I've forgotten).
I've also tried CM7 several times, OMFGB, and recently Th3ory's AOSP run.
I get smaller footprint, more customization, better battery life (I'm told, can't say I've left an AOSP on mine long enough to confirm/deny that personally).
I use my phone for 60% business/40% personal.
I know you can download an app or theme for just about everything...but at what point do you say enough is enough. I'm trying to make AOSP do what Sense already does?...most of the time for free.
Example... Sense 3.0 MMS...cleaner, nicer. Sense email client, way better than AOSP offering. I use Exchange for email. I know all about Touchdown, K9, moxier, Enhanced Email, etc. But on baked in AOSP email you can't even move an email to a sub folder??
The dialer is horrible, IMO. So I downloaded dialer one. I like sense's dialer, if you start typing a name or number, it starts pulling them up. Reminds me of how easy a blackberry is to use for dialing.
I like the people Widget, so I paid for launcher pro plus, their people widget as well as calendar/agenda widget is ok. It would be nice if the facebook pictures synced up properly with their people widget, but I've read this is a known AOSP issue. Again...buying/installing a 3rd party app for something that just works in Sense.
I'm not looking for a flame war. I know there's a HUGE majority of AOSP love out there...I get it. Just looking for opinions.... am I way off base here?
Now, AOSP is not all terrible. The ability to choose different launchers, change the number of home screens, how they rotate, different home dock icons, ability to change row/columns.... There are a lot of pluses for sure... so please don't think I'm kicking dirt on the AOSP guys. I appreciate good work from ALL the developers...it's a thankless and never ending job...
One of the main reasons I am sticking with Sense-based ROMs is the quick lookup feature.
I loved aosp on my Droid 1 and Droid x, when I got the t-bolt I had to deal with sense and now I can't go back to aosp.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
On the CM dialer, you can hit the search key and type someone's name.
I like AOSP cause thats what I learned on. Sense pisses me off more than it helps- too many things that just dont work right for me. For example (and this is small stuff, but stuff that just bugs me), click on the address bar on the browser. Start typing something to search....click enter, aww crap, it automatically put a www. in front of it...back up...delete the www. and try again. I can visit Sense once in a while, but always end up back at AOSP. I dont like re-learning, my original HTC Nexus with AOSP was still the best phone I ever had.
I love sense. I came from a Droid X and after i got my TB i realized that 80% of apps and widgets and stuff that i downloaded was to make it look and operate like sense. Like a world clock, a stop watch and good calender widget, the sense clock...the list goes on. Yes there are some things i miss from launchers i used but overall sense is good. Very functional and its got the eye candy.
I dont get why you u cant just turn sense off in settings like you could on my htc imagio. Made it much easier for people who prefer one or the other.

I think the true answer lies somewhere in between, the beauty of the Android OS is customization. Personally, I am using an AOSP dailer with my BAMF Sense ROM.
My girlfriend loves cm7. I can't stand it. I tend to think of AOSP as Android for people that don't care how it looks or works. Android really isn't that elegant all by itself. It's a pig in need of lip stick. I just refuse to pay for something Sense gives me for free is another reason. That HTC clock is coming close to being an icon of Android itself. I personally think its time Google considered making their industrial modern art masterpiece into something pleasing to the eye and brain. I might give AOSP another go at some point. I'm pretty sure I won't like it because I like how Sense ties things together and it Just works. For free.
I've tried going back to AOSP as I loved AOSP on my OG Droid. I am a Sense-aholic now and I cannot go back. Especially running Sense 3.0 on das BAMF 4.9.

+1, thats exactly how I was. I thought I was an ASOP only guy after my D1, but every time I try ASOP now I find myself missing some of the things that sense gives you.
Gingeritis 3D is the most stable GB Sense rom I have used yet, battery life is unexpectedly good.
I like the hardware that Motorola has been putting out with android, but Sense blows Blur out of the water...
I've tested a few moto phones...and that being said, I can TOTALLY see the huge love of AOSP for those folks. It's what they're used to and what they know.
But I've owned a sense phone...and use it daily now since release.
I too, can't see spending time and a little money to make it work or trying to make it work like Sense Candy....

I use Sense simply because I don't have time to experiment with all the other ROM options. But whenever I have started to try some other individual app options, I usually find something I like better. Sense weather animations are cool eye-candy, but there are much more functional weather apps when you need them--and you just don't need a weather app on all the time. The stock clock is ridiculously huge and some of the other optional Sense clocks are OK, but there are a million other clocks out there for free. Found a free calendar widget that is much more customizable and therefore nicer looking with my many backgrounds. Touchdown is better email app (but not cheap). One thing at a time, everything is getting replaced. Not sure what elements of Sense I'm still using!
Thanks, Robertus
I love asop. I love being able to use launcher pro and hide apps that i don't want to see. I love the speed. And every app works great on asop. I've tried to go back to sense but i only last a day at the most. I think the dailer on stock android is awesome.

I started off with Sense and tried the ASOP mods.
ASOP is very minimalistic. BUT Sense is TOO MUCH.
Google needs a good clock and a better calender and better icons. If they fix that, ill be solid with ASOP.
I like rooting so that I can get to enjoy both sense and aosp. Both have pluses and minuses. Can we agree to that?
End of story.

He was looking for opinions on Sense vs ASOP. He wants to know the pros and cons
I keep trying all the AOSP roms but keep going back to Das BAMF 1.8.6 because it's the most stable, has the least bugs, and the longest battery life. At least for me.
Its a personal preference, so there is no right or wrong answer. I definitely love AOSP. Just cleaner, every app works as intended, moddable.. most importantly (typically) ultra stable and fast.
I personally like the dialer, but usually people get hung up (no pun intended) on that. I love the fact that I can choose to dial, use favourites, have an easy to access call log, etc.. and if I can't manage to find someone in all that.. i can just hit the search key (you remember that little button on the bottom right side).
I do love some of the sense options but not enough to buy the farm. It would be nice to have a middle ground, but I guess i kind of do with AOSP and the mods.
I there any way to enable the quick lookup feature on AOSP? I mainly use quick lookup to easily translated web pages.

My guess is that there will be some minor changes to the look and feel of sense before the official release. But nothing too drastic.
And where is the pictures or prewiew os ICS ?
Can always hope for some nice changes, but as has already been mentioned probably only minor changes, shame really. Ah well, not the hugest fan of Sense in its current state anyway
I will express myself straight - i hate it. And honestly, i don't know what is going on with design section (or something like that) at HTC. Sense 3.0 is great, i like it, it looks good, works good. But Sense 3.5..arghhh, it's design is ugly, it doesn't look good. At all. And other than having Sense 3.5 i would much more like to see plain ICS.
Look of default applications (Yes, i'm talking about you - messages, contacts, calendar etc.) is much more nice on ICS than on Sense 3.5. I totally understood the effort of HTC to make something better on previous versions of Android, because UI was not so great...but with ICS this changes.
Of course I know that there is absolutlely no chance of HTC abandoning Sense, virtually non-existent chance of releasing ,,geek" version of HTC ROM (it would be against htc's will to do it, but this is a long story, not gonna discuss it here) so i guess i will have to bear with it.
If i wouldn't need to use HDMI cable, i would be installing pure ICS (CM9 presumably).
But i still believe in Sense 4.0...please, do something about this horrible monster that 3.5 is.
Of course it has some good functional abilites...but i want my UI look good. That's all.

Trip's ICS is extremely UNSTABLE!! The phone will freeze for phone calls with 30s or more. The in-call volume is very low, and it freezes when you attempt to increase the volume. The graphic are very glitchy with screen flickers. If you do not wish to make phone calls with your phone, then trip's ICS is fine.

currently most stable is trip's ics,)you can also w8 for Ultimite 1.0 4.0.1 ICS rom,its a new pure google ICS rom for sensation in sensation developement section, just look for it althought its still being uploading, just wait for it,i personally felt that it will be good and definetely better than trip's ics, but,im still prefer ARHD's ICS,its very stable, sense is not that bad

EDIT: For ICS 4.0.1 with Sense 3.5 Roms Only
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1405457
im on arhd 5.0.1 and its so lag with ics launcher..
I also prefere the design of pure ICS. Sense looks somehow ugly in comparism.
And the rosie lags like hell! Hope HTC will fix that.
So far only sense 3.0 is better for our phone...what if ICS comes with sense 3.0 UI? You may have noticed and compared sense 3.0 roms and sense 3.5 roms based on gingerbread, you'll be agree sense 3.0 is the clear winner in terms of stability and performance..sense 3.5 is too lagy...anyways left sense UI, if ICS comes as AOSP, then I have no problem declaring it as the most stable Rom made for our devices, sense is really a memory Hungary, and after seeing the leak, I got to know that ICS also needs good enough amount of ram CPU speed, how will we make most of it if sense keeps using all the resources and therefore left no room for ICS?
Recent leaks come with Sense 3.5. There is no way Sensation gets anything less.

Now...before anyone goes crazy and gets mad. I'm not trying to be a troll here by any means. I don't hate ice cream sandwich. I know it has a lot of improvements, which is always great
But...Ice cream sandwich... is just plain ugly looking to me when compared to Gingerbread. Does anyone else feel this way?

Gingerbread
I don't just mean the wallpapers. Gingerbread just looks so much more "Android" ish. Ice cream sandwich looks... odd. By no means is it garbage. It just doesn't look like android to me.
And I've also heard they are removing the menu button. THAT alone, killed any chance of me ever buying another android phone/device. It's one of the main reasons I came to love android so much. I don't understand why they are removing the "technical" feel that it has in favor of a "apple-ish" feel. If you get me.
I don't mean to sound like I hate Google/Android...But...honestly. I kinda am, now...Maybe it will change as we go along. But honeycomb was a disaster to me. I hope it improves.
Maybe I am over stepping my grounds...but I am just very disappointed in it all. Just as much as I am disappointed in Windows 8 metro... *shivers* Ugh.
How about you guys?
Menu is still there its just being moved to the upper right hand corner in most apps. Older apps not written for ICS have the legacy menu button appear. I do kind of wish they would just leave the button in one place. Besides for that you can always install a separate launcher. I don't really like the trebuchet launcher with CM9 so I installed ADW EX which gives a more GB feel.
I've been running ics for about a month, but I haven't used the galaxy nexus with the on-screen buttons though but I really prefer the layout over gb. I think the Widgets in the application drawer is amazing, I love the persistent search bar and the scrollable Widgets. I like gingerbread just fine but I like ice cream sandwich a lot more.

I haven't gotten my hands on a device that will run CM9 (talk to me again next week, E4gT otw) but the beauty of CM was always full customization. It probably wouldn't be too hard to install a new launcher and theme etc.
Overall I love the look of ICS tho. Seems more modern. I'll def have a better feel for it when I get my new phone. I've loved every major release of Android tho, and I started on 1.6 on a G1. (Please bring back multicolor LED notify light!!! ha)
all the new things have a time to adapt in a few time you will accept as well

Don't worry once ICS becomes stable on more devices you will see plenty of themes. It will take a bit as there have been a lot of changes but you will be able to make it look anyway you want. Like I have already started porting my Gotham theme to ICS.

They are not removing the menu button. just moving it. on Modaco you can get the menu button to be visible at all times.
Maybe time to root if you get a ICS device?
Sounds like you haven't rooted before. Because the UI is the easiest to change on Android. You can even make ICS look just like GB
However i think it's look great than Touchwiz.
I actually agree. I like the new features that come with ICS, but the UI is ugly to me.
I do agree that Gingerbread looks more.. Android-themed whereas ICS looks.. slicker. Not a dealbreaker, of course. I do feel google seems to have caught the Apple bug of one-customization fitting all; I would love to see Gingerbread themes available by default, for example.
Not that I can really complain, considering that I added the menu button back (though looking completely different) with a custom ROM. But there's another option I wonder why they didn't just provide by default..

I think that might actually be a background issue. (The UI itself may not be "android", but I don't think it could really be called ugly.) It deemphasizes the icons. A deeper background actually helps to emphasize them.
(That messaging app is disconcerting, though.)
I could not disagree more on this. gingerbread to me was an eye soar. the puke green status icons never worked for me. I like the ICS annimations better. Over all the UI for ICS is just much more polished and refined IMO. I have a honeycomb tablet with an ICS port and it shipped originally with Gigerbread. The ICS port is not ready for everyday use but if just looks and feel is all I am going off for me ICS > Honeycomb > Gingerbread

How are they becoming more like Apple? You can still have custom home screens with widgets, etc. You can still install different launchers. They are just updating the default UI. If they didn't update the UI then they would be like Apple, I don't think iOS has seen a major UI overhaul since 2007.
Mha ... the end has not changed greatly in terms of graphics, they just made sharper contrasts. What I love ics is its multitasking, notifications and its all part of "technique" that is behind. The menu button, I've yet: D
i think pre ICS android looked rather gruesome, buttons, menues, popups, checkboxes, radiobuttons, all the basic elements shamefully awful even. it was evident that they didn't spend much time thinking about looks and usability. i'd say it's is a pretty good leap now, you feel right away they have put alot of thought in it. i like it so much i'd never install a ROM that changes it drastically and i'm happy to see CM9 und AOKP go along, widen the capabilities without distracting from the clear AOSP concept.
but keep in mind it was designed for nexus, high definition screens, maybe amoled, and software keys. seems like an OS that was envisioned for the hardware it runs on, not just random linux with buttons and checkboxes thrown onto whatever device is available.
I like ICS more, it's better then gingerbread or MIUI. All menu, etc..

I'm obviously exaggerating a bit, but the keywords here are custom and different. Yes, we can search far and wide to do these things ourselves, but I'd like the options to be already there by default. That, I feel, is more with the Android spirit. It's also helpful for non-technical users who aren't as daring as we are.
