Now...before anyone goes crazy and gets mad. I'm not trying to be a troll here by any means. I don't hate ice cream sandwich. I know it has a lot of improvements, which is always great
But...Ice cream sandwich... is just plain ugly looking to me when compared to Gingerbread. Does anyone else feel this way?
ICS

Gingerbread
I don't just mean the wallpapers. Gingerbread just looks so much more "Android" ish. Ice cream sandwich looks... odd. By no means is it garbage. It just doesn't look like android to me.
And I've also heard they are removing the menu button. THAT alone, killed any chance of me ever buying another android phone/device. It's one of the main reasons I came to love android so much. I don't understand why they are removing the "technical" feel that it has in favor of a "apple-ish" feel. If you get me.
I don't mean to sound like I hate Google/Android...But...honestly. I kinda am, now...Maybe it will change as we go along. But honeycomb was a disaster to me. I hope it improves.
Maybe I am over stepping my grounds...but I am just very disappointed in it all. Just as much as I am disappointed in Windows 8 metro... *shivers* Ugh.
How about you guys?
Menu is still there its just being moved to the upper right hand corner in most apps. Older apps not written for ICS have the legacy menu button appear. I do kind of wish they would just leave the button in one place. Besides for that you can always install a separate launcher. I don't really like the trebuchet launcher with CM9 so I installed ADW EX which gives a more GB feel.
I've been running ics for about a month, but I haven't used the galaxy nexus with the on-screen buttons though but I really prefer the layout over gb. I think the Widgets in the application drawer is amazing, I love the persistent search bar and the scrollable Widgets. I like gingerbread just fine but I like ice cream sandwich a lot more.

Now... as always please pardon my android noob-ergy. So... Even with Cm9 I could somehow make it look like Gingerbread? That would solve most of my issues. But still...removing the menu button... Why google...

I haven't gotten my hands on a device that will run CM9 (talk to me again next week, E4gT otw) but the beauty of CM was always full customization. It probably wouldn't be too hard to install a new launcher and theme etc.
Overall I love the look of ICS tho. Seems more modern. I'll def have a better feel for it when I get my new phone. I've loved every major release of Android tho, and I started on 1.6 on a G1. (Please bring back multicolor LED notify light!!! ha)
all the new things have a time to adapt in a few time you will accept as well

Don't worry once ICS becomes stable on more devices you will see plenty of themes. It will take a bit as there have been a lot of changes but you will be able to make it look anyway you want. Like I have already started porting my Gotham theme to ICS.

They are not removing the menu button. just moving it. on Modaco you can get the menu button to be visible at all times.
Maybe time to root if you get a ICS device?
Sounds like you haven't rooted before. Because the UI is the easiest to change on Android. You can even make ICS look just like GB
However i think it's look great than Touchwiz.
I actually agree. I like the new features that come with ICS, but the UI is ugly to me.
I do agree that Gingerbread looks more.. Android-themed whereas ICS looks.. slicker. Not a dealbreaker, of course. I do feel google seems to have caught the Apple bug of one-customization fitting all; I would love to see Gingerbread themes available by default, for example.
Not that I can really complain, considering that I added the menu button back (though looking completely different) with a custom ROM. But there's another option I wonder why they didn't just provide by default..

I think that might actually be a background issue. (The UI itself may not be "android", but I don't think it could really be called ugly.) It deemphasizes the icons. A deeper background actually helps to emphasize them.
(That messaging app is disconcerting, though.)
I could not disagree more on this. gingerbread to me was an eye soar. the puke green status icons never worked for me. I like the ICS annimations better. Over all the UI for ICS is just much more polished and refined IMO. I have a honeycomb tablet with an ICS port and it shipped originally with Gigerbread. The ICS port is not ready for everyday use but if just looks and feel is all I am going off for me ICS > Honeycomb > Gingerbread
Gotta concurr with mcord11758. ICS to me looks more professional than GB

How are they becoming more like Apple? You can still have custom home screens with widgets, etc. You can still install different launchers. They are just updating the default UI. If they didn't update the UI then they would be like Apple, I don't think iOS has seen a major UI overhaul since 2007.
Mha ... the end has not changed greatly in terms of graphics, they just made sharper contrasts. What I love ics is its multitasking, notifications and its all part of "technique" that is behind. The menu button, I've yet: D
i think pre ICS android looked rather gruesome, buttons, menues, popups, checkboxes, radiobuttons, all the basic elements shamefully awful even. it was evident that they didn't spend much time thinking about looks and usability. i'd say it's is a pretty good leap now, you feel right away they have put alot of thought in it. i like it so much i'd never install a ROM that changes it drastically and i'm happy to see CM9 und AOKP go along, widen the capabilities without distracting from the clear AOSP concept.
but keep in mind it was designed for nexus, high definition screens, maybe amoled, and software keys. seems like an OS that was envisioned for the hardware it runs on, not just random linux with buttons and checkboxes thrown onto whatever device is available.
I like ICS more, it's better then gingerbread or MIUI. All menu, etc..

I'm obviously exaggerating a bit, but the keywords here are custom and different. Yes, we can search far and wide to do these things ourselves, but I'd like the options to be already there by default. That, I feel, is more with the Android spirit. It's also helpful for non-technical users who aren't as daring as we are.

i love my hero but i love the look of the palm pre as well. i would be willing to donate and i encourage others to donate to the first dev to make a full custom theme for our heros that mimic the pre. i do know i already have obannvi interested and trying to work on it as we speak. anybody else here maybe interested in such a theme? myself im interested in a android home theme but a sense theme would be welcomed too.
here are some screenies and resources for any devs interested:
theme site for the pre:
http://www.precentral.net/webos-themes
heres a cool one that is pretty close to the stock palm theme. could we get our taskbar to look like that too?
http://www.precentral.net/webos-themes/black-out-webos-14
also heres a photo of what some of the icons look like in the launcher.

i would also love that a palm feeling sometimes haha but woulnt palm tell the devs doing that to stop? :S there was a pre theme around on the gsma version and they told them to stop

i personally would love to see a Pre-Theme, the icons and general feel is much "softer" and would chip in to see it become a reality...
R
I can see the appeal for something different like the Pre theme which I think looks pretty bold and smooth compared to Android...and I do remember early on for some other devices there was a Pre theme but I believe development had to stop because of Palm making threats..not quite sure...
Anyway, although I would definitely be interested in giving a Pre theme a try, it would not jibe well with every other application on your device in terms of UI...
as long as the developer doesnt try to sell the theme he will be ok over in the blackberry world one guy made a pre replica and he was getting taken to court for it so he decided to stop the developing of it
i owned a pre and pixi and i love the look and feel of it, just the phones design and battery life sucked. that's why i moved to android. palm won't tell us to not develop a theme, there are plenty of custom themes for the pre. i just bought a palm pre blackberry theme today for my wife and it's pretty sweet. i agree this theme should be free but ill donate for the work the dev puts into it. last summer mmission and zenulator had a palm pre theme for android on the touch vogue and it was killer but had alot of force closes.
im offering $10 via paypal to a dev that can theme the:
taskbar, launcher, icons and possibly the phone with as many realistic animations as we can get on the hero.
i do have a question...can we even get out menubar "taskbar" to look like the pre's? i mean with the icons aligned like the palm with the clock centered?
i had the pre theme for a while for my G1. I cant remember off the top of my head who put it together. I do remember he was told to take it down from Palm because he used the exact images that palm uses. But he just changed the name of the theme to something else and had it up for a while. I still have it on my computer so I could use some of those images to put something together.
It would be alot easier to use a stock aosp rom instead of a rom with sense. If that is what your looking for? Or if you still want sense I could pretty much just theme the home screen, well I guess the dailer too and other stuff it would just be more work. lol. So which way are you looking for?
It would be cool though I have always liked this look too. I think I am gonna get started on it.

Well, we don't have to have the EXACT replica of the Pre but that kind of functionality would be pretty damn sweet. I also owned a Pre before coming to the Hero. If we could combine the two I think that would be pretty sweet. Also willing to DONATE for the work of someone who could do this.

I am enjoying my Nexus S for the peace of mind it brings: knowing I'm running stock Android and that I'm going to get future updates first.
Having said that, I do wish the experience wasn't marred by issues and glitches (specifically with the random ringtones, and the occasional, yet nevertheless frustrating, screen scrolling and icon issues). I'm looking forward to the next bug fix update. Fixing these issues I predict will go a long way in making me really happy.
I'd like to add: One aspect of the phone, and of Android in general, that I feel sorely about is the keyboard. No matter how one twists it - for example, one might say it's improved over previous Android keyboards, which is true - it pales in comparison to the accuracy and response of Apple's keyboard. This is not to start some immature Apple vs. Google flame war; anyone who has typed extensively on both platforms will understand the difference. It's also a shame Google seems insistent on copying even Apple's mistakes, for example, the lack of customization and custom auto-correct features. I can't wait until Blindtype is implemented. It's sorely needed.

I don't understand your keyboard issue? Will you elaborate? I have used an iPhone extensively and still can't figure out how to make it do Swype...
Regarding your glitches, I recommend an exchange - I have none of those issues...
I use NS rotate with MT4 on main line (has 4g web attached), but I may upgrade 3rd line to preferred 4G web in order to use along with MT4.
NS and MT4 are great phones, and probably they're the best phones for T-Mobile so far.
IMHO I think its common for new phones to have some sort of fault, its not perfect but of sure is a great device.

I'd agree. I was an iphone user for nearly 4 years and it is one of the most difficult parts of switching to Android. The iphone keyboard did seem to be much more accurate (Or maybe after years of typing on it, i was just REALLY used to it). I did originally download the swiftkey keyboard, which seemed easier to get used to originally but i had a problem with SMS that could not be solved any other way but a factory restore. And since then i've given the stock keyboard a bit more of a chance and after a couple of weeks i have to say it's not nearly as bad as i originally thought.
Love it just like did the nexus one
Great phone
Believers b3ar fruit with their Nexus S.....

Ironically, i'm still spending more quality time with my I9000M than with the Nexus S
the SNS works out of the box, almost perfectly, there is no major flaw, nothing to FIX
in the other hand the SGS it is full of PROBLEMS, and in a weird twist of thing, it's fun to FIX it
it'll be horrible though if that was your only phone, and you need it for business.
as a DEV toy, it's fund
I can finally go all out, trying all kind of crazy things on the SGS to fix it, and make it work better, now that I've got a reliable SNS to use for my daily business
I love my phone too! I can't wait for the development to get to a point where the N1 is. I love modding my phone, I just wish I knew how to do some development myself.
The only thing that made me regret the purchase was the HD2 getting NAND two days after I bought it.

I suppose everyone's experience is different, but I find when typing on an iPhone (or even an iPod), the keyboard response and speed is superior to Android's - I find myself typing far more confidently. (Anybody else constantly type "km" when trying to type "I'm" with stock Android keyboard?)
I'm using Smart Keyboard Pro already, and it is indeed a step up from stock Android keyboard. However, it seems to not be optimized for Gingerbread. I've reached out to the developer but haven't heard from him yet. It seems to especially miss space bar taps, so I'll often get words likethis; it also seems to miss really fast presses, especially when letters are close to each other. A common example is "you". I'll try the iPhone emulator keyboard that someone suggested and see how that goes. Thank you.
Edit: It looks like the iPhone keyboard, but it doesn't type like the iPhone keyboard. I'm not sure if this is software related or hardware related, but something about the Nexus S screen is almost too sensitive - you can hover your finger over the screen and it'll register presses; this might be making the typing experience worse than it should be. I don't know. I'll stick to Smart Keyboard Pro, which is as responsive as it gets typing on Android. Plus, it has no-brainer features which I don't understand why Google/Apple don't implement into their stock keyboards (like custom auto-correct - this feature goes miles in improving typing; or long pressing for second key symbols).
as i know,cm7 and the miui are the most rocking rom in android, but im wondering that why our sensation forum is not ?isn't cm7 performance can beat over sense?

here's the bottom line. Sense is cooler looking (except the ICS sense 3.5, to me it looks like ****. seriously. wtf. ). It IS slower. People who said it isn't are in denial. Sense is just really heavy due to the framework and ****.
Aosp is boring. as EpSix said. but, it's fast. muuuuch faster than any sense rom. Doesn't matter what "aosp" rom it is. CM7, MIUI, CM9. It's all faster than sense. Problem is it doesn't look as good out of the box. The customizations are endless when a stable build comes out. Just take CM7 + ADW Launcher + Theme chooser. it's heaven.

I bought HTC because it was between the Sensation and the S2. The S2 woud've cost me 65,000won vs the Sensation's 56-57,000won. (In Korea, you don't buy the phone outright unless you want to drop 850,000won. So you pick a plan and a phone and pay off the phone in installments.)
I liked Sense but wanted ICS already so I flashed a custom ROM.

Why shouldn't they? Unless you buy a Nexus device you're going to get a manufacturer GUI, whether it's Sense with HTC, Touchwiz with Samsung, Blur with Motorola, etc.

To me, I bought this device because of the dual core, and I don't want a Samsung. I would have gotten the gal nex if it was HTC.

The nasty clock. The ****ty outerglow on all the icons, the ****e textured background and the horrendous weather icons.
Installed CM7 and MIUI and never looked back. ICS is awesome too!
the last good Sense was 3.0, which is why I'm still on it. 3.5 and 3.6 feel clunky and I haven't met anyone who prefers the soft gray over 3.0s hard grays and blacks.
AOSP roms offer the best battery life and smoothest experience, but there aren't any rock solid ones for the Sensation yet.
as for MIUI, it has always been very slow and laggy. maybe if it were GPU accelerated, but no goddamn way is that going back on my phone.
Sense for apps and widgets.
Miui for iphone look

Sense UI sucks!
First of all the calendar app doesn't even show titles of events on the boxes(you have to click on them to see it), which is USELESS if you use calendar. You might as well take an actual, physical wall calendar and just mysteriously draw boxes for all your appointments, because that's all you get with Sense calendar.
Personalize button stuck on the main screen is also retarded lol, who the bloody hell is changing their wallpaper/ringtone that frequently to need it stuck on their main screen! Calm down with the uber personalization, I just want to use my phone!
The USB cable screen is a hulking behemoth of steaming poo, why are there like THIRTY THOUSAND OPTIONS FOR USING A USB CABLE?! The first time I saw it I had to change my undergarments. Stock Android just has "connect to pc" and then.....what do you know? "disconnect from pc."
And on the dialer screen, god help you if you decide to call someone you don't have a photo for. The giant huge ass green Android that pops up on the screen with a white background will blind you and scar your eyes forever with its obnoxious ugly huge size. Jesus phone, calm your ass down, I just want to make a call!
Want to use secure lockscreen? Good luck! You can't even see who's calling you, because they are so desperate that you use their nifty HTC lockscreen. You have to use two lockscreens! What a bunch of ****!
I also always hear people talk about their HTC widgets. Well who the bloody hell in their right mind would want a huge ass clock taking up half the screen? Not to mention you already have a clock(look at the top right corner of your phone) but why buy the Sensation and have a big screen just to put a clock that takes up half the screen on it?! I guess you can look "cool" to your friends, but I prefer a useful home screen!
Not to mention it's LAGGY!
I am currently using CM7, I was using VQ but couldn't stand the reboots. Waiting for a stable CM9 release.

I don't think it's that big a deal. For 'normal' users who may not know about long pressing the home screen and going to the settings Menu it could be fairly useful. Besides, I believe you could re-assign it to something else if you want, at my old Hero could.

Bit big of an exaggeration there ! There's only 5 options (On ICS).
Once again I do think it makes things like Tethering a bit quicker to use. I don't use HTC Sync but I can definitely see why it's on the cable screen, people who use Outlook may need to sync their Calenders every day or so and this just makes it easier.
And on the dialer screen, god help you if you decide to call someone you don't have a photo for. Not sure about this one since I had a call today and my phone was locked and I could see the caller fine. Maybe this is different on ICS and Gingerbread.

Me! Although, I didn't buy the Sensation just for the clock.
I keep it mainly because I find the weather section useful and it acts as a shortcut to alarms and the stopwatch etc.

I think it was always quick and smooth, didn't notice any lag on Stock Gingerbread.
With ARHD it's quick, the only thing that could be a bit quicker is the Settings Menu, but it's beta so that's a non issue.

This is my third Android Device. Two of them have been from HTC and the other from Motorola. I buy HTC not because of Sense, it does provide some 'eye candy' but its not for me. I go with HTC because of their great build quality and the fact that they are so developer friendly. With the number of ROMs under development, its hard to not find one that doesn't work for you.
AOSP CAN be boring, but with a few modifications, you can make look just as good as Sense:
Check out ADW EX as a launcher replacement. Tons of themes to choose from and easy to swap out icons.
I use Beautiful Widgets for a 'sense like' clock. IMO, it runs circles around the stock sense clock widget, much more customizable.
I do use the Calendar quite frequently. Pure Grid Calendar Widget is just as good as the sense calendar if not better.
Bottom line: to each their own. Some like a minimal look. Others like a flashy setup. Find what works for you and enjoy it. =D

Like i said, everyone to there own. Thats exactly what i like about Sense.
well im sure some of you have now seen the Nexus 10.
I'm kinda jealous, but at the same time I reckon the Infinity looks so much nicer. So, I might pass and wait for next year's model.
Anyway, this is not about the Nexus 10 (there is already another thread for that).
This is about Android 4.2's layout; Google has seem to have removed the tablet UI and I'm not sure I like it. It would seem weird to have the navigation buttons in the center, especially if your using it in landscape! I don't see any advantages to why Google are taking this route. You will have essentially a big black bar on the bottom, just for 3 buttons, seems pretty silly to have on 'widescreen' tablet. So now the notification bar at the top now; more screen estate wasting.
I understand what they are try to do with the whole 'unified experience' stuff. But I don't see any other positive to this.
Don't get me wrong tho, I still want the update; and I might like it if I see it in person. Hopefully Asus announces version 11 soon
What do you guys think of the new layout? Love it? Hate it?
I don't really like it. I prefer the current layout much more than the phone UI look. Oh well...
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA Premium.
I think I would prefer the nav buttons in the centre. I often hold the tab in my left hand and navigate with my right hand - it seems counter productive to keep reaching to the left hand corner with my right hand...
That layout will most likely only be on the nexus 10 and not 4.2 for the infinity. Its the same layout as the Nexus 7 jelly bean. Its the phablet layout.
i mean it doesn't look that bad. Having the notifications slide down is nicer then the current pop-up. and also having the toggle switch on the right hand side is nice
take a look at this video... it goes through it a bit:
http://youtu.be/vCN7Y3e6MIU
also, I think it's a 4.2 thing. I believe Google wants to move away from the whole tablet UI. Seems like want to unify all 3 of their devices.
ps. the nexus 10 is one ugly looking mofo.
Is nobody going to say it? Please tell me I'm not the only one capable of seeing this..

A ridiculous waste of screen space that you really can't afford on a 10" device. There was absolutely no need to separate button and notification bars. I certainly hope ASUS doesn't bring this UI "upgrade" over to the Infinity.

Yeah, the Nexus 7 is the same way. Even on a 7 inch device (perhaps even *more* so on a 7 inch device), it just doesn't seem to make much sense to have separate button and notification bars. I much prefer the "all on one bar" approach....

I like the 4.1 layout, I think it is really well thought out. I like the big time in notification area, so I do not use any time widget, and I like the large status icons too. Entirely the bottom bar is well organized.
I'm not sure about the 4.2 but it looks they made the bottom bar smaller to win space for top bar. The 4.2 layout is probably the big step backwards many people will hate on their tablets.
Are we getting 4.2?

I understand what you are eluding to. But I don't confuse Android widgets with Windows live tiles. Don't really think they are similar to me.
---------- Post added at 02:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:06 PM ----------
Google says they want to have a consistent UI between phones and tablets. And I think it's a terrible idea. They are different form factors, used differently and should have different UIs.
I really wish we could stop acting like the average human is too stupid to find the navigation buttons on a tablet just because they are moved to the left instead of the center.
If we figured out how to make fire and create tools, then for the love of God, I have faith we'll figure out how to find the navigation buttons and menu if it's in a different place.

Agree. Does Google now try to match Microsoft's equally bad idea trying to unify mobile and desktop UIs?

I did say "See". I'm a designer, my comment was purely visually-based. I haven't had my hands on 4.2 to see if it works the same as w8, have you?
Looks like they're trying to unify 'form', function notwithstanding. That would be unfortunate.
I actually saw someone theme their Tab so that all controls were on the sides of the screen with the middle empty or with widgets. Screen links on one side, apps on the other. They never had to reach for anything. Seemed like a smart layout.
Hopefully the people at Cyanogenmod will be able to give you a choice between the layouts when CM 10 goes 4.2, also don't think this is the smartest move by Google.
I'm just going to do what I did to my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7, which is disable the navbar and use LMT Launcher. I really don't mind the status bar on top though.

They should just provide the option between the 4.1 and 4.2 style UI's.
Then again, that would remove 50% of the reason PA rom is developed.
PA always felt too... Slow for my liking.
CROMI for the win!

Judging from what I have seen of the 4.2 version of the tf300 (which shouldn't be too different from our Infinities), you'll have the option to switch.
I like it visually, but doubt its practicality. I guess this is another 'wait and see' moment, where we all must decide for ourselves what we feel most comfortable with.
I hope that Asus (or sdbags himself ) will someday implement (semi-)transparent status bars and notification bars.
I'd make our infinities look much better, that's for sure.

I can confirm that Asus will allow us to switch between 4.1.1 UI and 4.2.1 UI modes but it requires a reboot...
As for transparent system notification bars, yes it can be done But I'm waiting for Asus to release 4.2.1 for the TF700 first although I may attempt a sneaky port of the TF300 Rom as we now have a working TWRP that solves the encrypted bootloader issues
I like the new layout with notifications you can display on the left side of the screen and the quick tile on the right side. I think it would be nice to have an option to customize the virtual key position.
First, I am very new at rooting and customizing Android and appreciate any help understanding. Please don't take my questions wrong, the screenshots on these ROMS look amazing and I know more than a few tons of hours went into developing and testing, it really is that I am not comprehending the differences I'm finding.
Thanks to the help of the great tutorials here, my SK4G is now successfully rooted! I've been looking at ROMS now for a very long time and found I am really leaning towards Glorious Overdose v5 or neXus JB.
What I'm wondering though, is why would I go through the trouble and risk of flashing if it is essentially still running froyo? Since it's rooted, could I simply uninstall the junkware and use Holo or ADW for a similar effect and virtually no risk? Of course I do see the difference in the kernal version, but as I said I am new to this and it's just my guess that kernal is even a big difference maker.
I am very obviously missing something here, and though I am searching I'm not quite finding what it is I'm not understanding. Otherwise as the video stated when I signed up... I'm a noob...

Thanks for pointing out Overdose is buggy, I have that and nexus JB downloaded so perhaps I'll go with JB. Admittedly I'm a bit nervous to take that next step and flash. If I brick I have no backup phone, but it looks like the instructions here on this website are pretty clear and easy to follow. Plus, I'm a risk taker lol!
There are many reasons to flash a custom ROM, in addition to what Immortality said: you can flash one that looks and feels more like GingerBread, IceCreamSandwich, JellyBean, etc. You can pick one that isn't so bloated (although once you're rooted, you can pretty easily remove the bloat). I've tried a few, and here are my notes:
GOV33+LEAN-PERFORMANCE-RELEASE - Started out good, but over time SU stopped working, battery life degraded. Liked LauncherPro. Maybe it just needs to be reinstalled
neXus_JB_v1.2 - Colors hard to read (white on gray). Seems like too many unnecessary apps (live wallpapers, etc).
MeMoRy - Based on GOV3.3 Lean. Uses Lightning Launcher, which I didn't like at first, but it's very simple and presumably lightweight. However, the supplied Jelly Bean keyboard keeps crashing. I installed the ICS keyboard and removed the JB keyboard, and this is now the ROM I use.

But I still wouldn't use it if this is your only phone. Keyboard does not work so you are stranded with a virtual keyboard. Battery life does not seem to be all that great. No buttons work on the actual phone except the power button, trackpad button, and the volume down button. The gyroscope does not work and I have not even set up my SIM on this so I don't know how it works with actual use.
