LG optimus 2x - T-Mobile LG G2x

So I have a lg optimus 2x and it doesn't have the T mobile brand on it however, the person who gave me the phone was using it and is with T mobile and he was getting a 3g or 4g connection. If true, i tried my sim card i am not even getting a 3g signal, only Edge.
So, would installing a G2x rom fix anything or is that a brick i'll be holding?
I already installed the optmius 2x cyangon rom, rooted with super click but got no 3g so...
Any insight?

Wrong phone forum. This is for the G2X, not the Optimus 2X. There's a separate forum for that phone.
You should never flash a rom for the phone if it isn't specifically for that model.
The names are close but they are different.

Right. Also, the Optimus isn't designed to work on Tmo natively, that is to say it's meant to be used on the Wind carrier (and maybe others, I've never cared enough to look into it). And in keeping with the fact that the roms aren't compatible they maybe also operate on different frequencies and that could be why the 2g only, but I'm only saying this on a semi-educated guess, so I could be completely wrong.

Go to setting and about phone. Need to know if the Model Number is p999 or p990.
Everyone remember that Wind Mobile is using the p999 and it is an Optimus 2x as T-Mobile can only call it a G2x.

Phone is p990. Also, would getting the sim card upgraded to a 4g one help? as the person who i got the phone from said that he was getting a 4g connection and unless i don't have that than the connection will drop down to Edge.
Have you guys heard of this?

You should get the 4g card but still not sure if you will get 4g speeds. It looks like it has the same frequency's.

On the bright side, you're getting ics

Sorry to disagree with a previous poster, but if the phone is a P990 then will certainly NOT be able to get 3G or 4G on T-Mobile.
The person who had the phone before is simply not telling you the truth. There is no way he was getting a 4G connection on a T-Mobile SIM with an LG P990 - only the P999 can do that...
Well, there *IS* a way, but it isn't something you would have any control over. Apparently there are a _very few_ areas of the U.S. where T-Mobile has roaming agreements with AT&T that will allow certain AT&T compatible 3G devices (such as the P990) to roam onto AT&T 3g/4g using a T-Mobile SIM. Chances are unlikely, however, that this is the case. Even if it were, you would not be able to do the same unless you were in one of those few areas.

Roaming on AT&T would most likey not get 3G either. The P990 is compatible with 900, 1900 and 2100 bands. AT&T uses the 850 band for 3G. In some areas they might use 1900 but I am not sure about that.
Also, the P990 in Canada is not for Wind. Wind and Videotron sell the P999 which is identical to the G2X. The only carrier in Canada selling the P990 is Fido.

[Q] Is there a remedy for 2g data speeds from T-Mobile?

I thought I did my homework. But when I called t-mobile to find out if the quad band Infuse would work on their network, I didn't ask what kind of data speeds I would get. My bad.
So now I have this almost perfect device that gets 2g speeds. Not even 3g. And they're charging me $9.99 a month (for tethering) for this privilege because it's not a t-mobile phone.
So if any of you know a workaround, please let me know.
Otherwise, I'll have a one week old Infuse to sell.

Sell it. The Infuse does not support the UMTS1700 band that T-Mobile uses. Neither does any other AT&T phone that I know of.
For the most part, with a few rare exceptions, unless the phone was sold by T-Mobile USA, it won't get 3G speeds.
You can sometimes go the other way - 2-3 T-Mobile phones support the AT&T 3G bands, but it's rare.
I don't think any AT&T phones support the AWS (UTMS1700) band for T-Mobile, but I know that a few T-Mobile phones (Galaxy S phones) have the 1900 band, so they work on AT&T's 3G network.
Your better off selling the Infuse and getting something like it for T-Mobile, or just wait for the SGS2, and get that, because your Infuse will be stuck on 2G.

Not for existing devices, it's a hardware limitation
The tech guy I spoke with at t-mobile said it probably will -- but that's quite a while to wait. By then a GSM version of Kyocera's Echo might be out. Now I know what questions to ask.

T-Mobile USA 3G Compatible - Which Version?

I hear the O3D has 2 international versions, and both do not support the T-Mobile USA 1700/2100 band.
How can I tell the difference?
I already made the mistake getting the Thrill 4G without realizing it would only work on 2G for T-Mobile. Awesome phone but I would like to have 3G as well so I will be returning my Thrill and getting an O3D on eBay.
there's been a lot of topics similar to this.
When searching online or on ebay, just go read the HSDPA bands. If it has 1700 on it, you're fine. Ignore the GSM bands since that's every version of the Optimus 3D will work.

Here's a link, sorry not ebay.

Ouch. You may want to get it from a retailer since you'll have a better chance at getting a better warranty. There are domestic (USA-based) retailers who have the O3D at good prices, AND if it's the wrong one you'll have an easier time returning it. Plus, they will be able to tell you if you are getting the right one with AWS/1700 bands. That's the one I have and I get 3.5G speeds on it. You can see other threads for some speed test results, and they are good.
Good luck.

[Q] AWS compatibility

Hi there,
I've done some googling on the topic and i can't seem to find a concrete answer, i was hoping one of you could help me out.
When my plan is finished in december, i'm planning on switching over to WIND mobile since their prices are WAY better than anything any other canadian provider has to offer. Unforunately, their network only really works with AWS compatible phones. Now, my friend had a rogers captivate and switched over to WIND no problem. My infuse is an ATT version (not sure if theres a difference) but theres no mention of AWS compatibility on phonegsm for the captivate or the infuse.
I'm thinking that in that case, the infuse is also compatible?
If anybody has a friend that uses WIND, would it be possible for you to pop in their sim card and see if it works?
Wind Mobile requires your equipment to transer on 1710–1800 MHz, and receive at 2100–2155 MHz.
Due to the fact that the Infuses radio can operate on both 1800 and 2100 Frequency, I would assume that it would work. However, if you go to a Wind Mobile store, they can test your phone for free.

If it's an AT&T phone, it's not AWS compatible - simple as that.
Try unlocking a T-Mobile phone, much higher chance of working.

[q] regarding straight talk (t-mobile) hspa+ network , need help

well im looking into moving to straight talk under t mobile... Ive had both at*t and t mobile here in nyc and i would have to say t mobile gives me better speed at the sacrifice of some low signals. (in regards to t mobiles HSPA+ network) now ive been looking at these phones as ive sold my old phones and will be starting fresh with a new phone to start straight talk service ( i no longer have my phones from t-mobile or at*t)
Motorola MB886 Atrix HD
Pantech Flex P8010
Optimus L9 P769
HTC Raider 4G
LG Thrill 4G P925
HTC Sensation XE
myTouch 4G
now on gsmarena it list the different bands (freq.) these phones above run on.. even if some of them originally were made for only one carrier such as the (pantech flex).
My question is how do i know if the phones listed above are DEFINITELY COMPATIBLE with the straight talk T MOBILE HSPA+ network ( when i had my old t mobile galaxy s II i was getting 6-8Mbps with ease)
Assuming i would have to unlock the phone of choice regardless if its a carrier exclusive yes?
Are there any specific bands i should look out for to know for sure that the phone WILL work on the HSPA+ network of T-MOBILE? can an unlock pantech flex originally exclusive for at&t work on t mobile HSPA+ network without a problem with the same data speeds Ive seen?

It is very rare for a non T-Mobile branded phone to be able to utilize the full T-Mobile 4G. They use the 1900mhz band which is pretty much a T-Mobile USA exclusive.
They are, however, refarming their spectrum to allow for AT&T 4G capable phones to use T-Mobile 4G, but it is not quite widespread yet. They are rapidly doing this and expect them to be done by the middle of next year when they deploy LTE. If you live near a large city, chances are the towers have been refarmed
Oh. And if the phone is T-Mobile branded and released in the last year you should have HSPA+ 42 which is blazing fast

I have the Optimus L9 (P769).. I have Simple as my carrier, which is also a T-Mobile MVNO.. I average about the same speed as you with your S II.. The Optimus is a good phone, though it does have a major drawback.. You can't move apps to your SD card.. Even though mine has been rooted, still not possible.. It does have a slot for an SD, But it's only good for music, vids, etc. And with only 2GB internal storage, it's really not that much..

Sorry, not to be argumentative, but 1900mhz is the band that T-mobile is refarming to use for HSPA+. They did not previously use it for high speed data.
In the US, T-mobile was the only carrier to use the AWS band for high speed data, which uses both 1700/2100 mhz for up/download.

[Q] How to Switch to Verzion with T-Mobile's myTouch 4G Slide

Hi guys I have a question hopefully someone can help me with. I have the myTouch 4G Slide from T-Mobile but I want to use it on Verizons network. I know how to root and unlock the boot-loader but are there any other steps I need to take before this is functional? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Version uses sim cards right? If so just search the threads here on how to sim unlock your phone, I believe I read one or two here before. You can also have it unlocked by tmo if your on contract with them or you can buy sim unlock codes

Verizon uses CDMA. The MT4GS is a GSM phone, so there is no way to use it on Verizon's service. It doesn't have a radio that is compatible with Verizon's towers.

Exactly! There is absolutely no way to get this phone, or any GSM phone that I know of, to work on Verizon's system. Even T-Mobile's new LTE service is different than the LTE from Verizon (not that this phone can work on either of those, either).
Haha, couldn't remember myself, hence the foggy reply! CDMA is such a pain, makes me wonder why anyone uses a carrier with it, I mean unless you never travel or want your phone to only ever work with one carrier....

There are a few Verizon and Sprint (both CDMA carriers) that have GSM backup. They market them as their "World Phones". The iPhone5 is one of them. If the phones have the GSM portion unlocked (Verizon automatically unlocks theirs, Sprint will unlock on request after a certain amount of time), you can use a foreign SIM and the GSM radio of those phones. But, you have to be careful, the phones default to the CDMA and if you have roaming turned on, in some countries that could be a VERY expensive oversight with roaming charges.
