Google asking Android devs to get rid of the Menu button - Android General

Link
What a stupid idea. One of the things that piss me off the most in iOS is how wasteful it is when it comes to screen real estate, while on Android the unneeded buttons are kept off the screen until they are explicitly called by the user
Now Google is pushing a design paradigm that is essentially going backwards (not to mention ugly and inconsistent with current UI decisions)

Wow, all it takes is a couple of dots to fire you up? I really don't see the big deal...

notice how the ActionBar takes a silly amount of space for something that could have been added to the virtual buttons at the bottom?

To be fair I agree with op. I like having the menu button because it saves wasting some of the screen with a bar.
Some android devices are small and that bit of screen could make a three inch display more like two and a half.
Its not the dots the op is on about but the fact that you have to have that menu, whereas at moment you can have full screen app and choose to show a menu by pressing a button which frees up screen space whereas if you have a fixed menu on screen all the time then apps have less space to work with on screen.

Agreed, this is a bad idea, if I wanted a space wasting OS I would have migrated to microsofts new mobile platform.
Google are shockers at implementing unpopular changes, just have to look at YouTube over the years to see that, ICS has some pretty dumb features in it already, like the forever moving onscreen menu button, this proposal takes stupid one step further

Google should just give the option of using either. It's less consistent, but then both camps are happy.

Im sorry but that screen shot was (or at least looks like it was) takin from the galaxy nexus which was given more screen realestate for those keys. Their pure touch screen not capatative (could never spell that right) samsungy is pushing that. Cause if thats being added to every phone then that is retarded and a waste. That screen shot looks exactly like the nexus' or mayne the future of samsungs high end phones.

Agree with OP.
We don't need to see all the buttons. Keep'em under the hood.
Space is precious!

Who the hell has brainfarts like this? the menu button is useful as it is. Why change it unnecissarily? What are the advantages of this? More to the point who auythorises crap like this. It amazes me the amount of morons who work together and who have the ability to approve other peoples craptastic ideas.

The problem with the menu button is that:
1- no context. All options are lumped together and have no organization.
2 - mystery meat. you have no idea that there is a menu and a lot of the the time there isn't. Conditions users to be confused.
The action bar gives context (icons) and organization (desperate groups of menus), as well as let's the user know that there are options available.

Options aren't lumped together. For instance if pressing the menu button in tapatalk options come up in seperate clearly defined squares and are straightforward and logical, same in other apps like go launcher.
Yes you don't know if a menu exists, I agree, but surely a solution would be have maybe just a small symbol on screen to make user aware although I never find it a concern.
The problem with the action bar is that it wastes valuable screen real estate. I'm assuming it can be disabled for full screen apps like video players though. Or is it always on?

Interesting. Its good that you can have apps not using it but I still think a menu that can pop up but be hidden when not needed, via a button, is better and saves screen space.

I see your point but they could have say just three dots at bottom showing a menu is available rather than a big bar which eats screen space that on smaller screens could be invaluable.

Having the three dots as a small icon overlaid somewhere would be good, too.

No need to get all uptight about it. While Google may ask. Many OEM are not ready to give up the buttons yet. Even the new HTC still have the buttons. I don't like the idea myself as it just plain ugly but hey not my choice.

Personally i prefer the old capacitive buttons over the hideous rubbish that is ICS.

As soon as 1 device comes out with no menu button on it then this will be required. The best solution I can see is to give developers a way to tell if there is a menu button or not on the phone. That way the software can decide whether you need one on screen or not.

[Alt Design UI Concept] Pandora //updated 3-18

Here is the first in what will hopefully be a small project I am undertaking to improve some android app layouts and keep up on my graphics chops while I search for a new design gig. If people like this I will do some others and continue to post them here. Enjoy.
-Travis
The Issue:
This concept UI assumes that most Pandora users run the program in the background while they browse the web and take care of other business, which may or may not be true. I personally use Pandora often in the car and while commuting (or used to, haha awww). One thing that struck me about the app was it was almost as if the designers ignored many decisions that could have made it more user friendly.
Why would a designer place a row of buttons on the bottom of the screen that were small and hard to see at a glance (while driving, etc.), and could possibly be mistaken for the actual built in virtual keys on the N1 and other new phones? I also am somewhat confused by the placement of the album artwork as the most prominent design element, which I doubt anyone really looks at for more than 3 - 4 seconds.
Generally I thought the usability could be cranked up about 1000% by simple things like making buttons larger, and placing them far more strategically in the middle of the screen, replacing the less important artwork. In this version, artwork is in the background, blurred to give a more interesting texture than the normal black and adding a layer of depth to the UI.
Most of the button functions stay the same, with the addition of the bookmark song button. Action buttons (Play & Next) are larger, and set on opposite sides of the screen for muscle memory.
Song title and artist title have been changed to a larger size to be more legible at a glance. Hopefully this facilitates finding the song title you are listening to quickly, then with the other improved elements, just as quickly being able to rate it, play the next track, change stations, or bookmark the song.
Overall I think this would be a much more friendly interaction than the current version, especially for the listener on the go. Leave the love or hate below!

Yep, not all of us are blessed with dainty digits, and i found myself button mashing quite a bit...
Another thing I was thinking about was the addition of a status bar notification with button built right into the notification bar, so no need to hit the bar then jump to the program when you're in the middle of doing something else. I'll try to mock that up and add it to the OG post when its done.
i immediately thought of the new windows phone 7 design when i saw this. which is to say, lovely. secondly i have to wonder if maybe you should take this a step further in your effort to minimize the unnecessary elements and do away with the album art altogether. it struck me that if the cover behind it was too white or light in general it might make the keys too hard to see. instead take another key from the wp7 design and make them large white buttons on top of eye-pleasing color swaths like cerulean, a soft orange or red, hell maybe even randomize the colors.
anyways, i really love this idea and lament the state of graphic design in android, especially in contrast to that "i" device. we're getting the snot kicked out of us in that front.
hope to see this come to fruition.

Yeah, I can see where is resembles the WP7S start screen with the squares and light typeface...I tried to make sure I wasnt ripping off their media UI unintentionally, as I havent really seen too much of the 7 series stuff yet. Just seemed like the button scheme would lend itself well to a media player...hope its not too close, hahaha.
When I was laying this out, I had thought about making the entire scheme just black icons outlined in white to save battery power and dumping the artwork totally. Might comp a version like that out and add it to OP if I get some time today.
While I like the minimalistic big button approach I think that from a marketing view there needs to be some album art and or ad space on the screen. This interface works for a simple media player.

Theres ad space built into the bottom. Just like it is now on the real thing afaik. The G ad is a fake.
is it possible to build something like that into the notification panel? like is it possible at all? cause that would be nice...always felt that there should be some sort of task switcher built into the notification panel...one that can be switched left or right, and a long press gives a prompt to end the task.
Views
I think this is a great idea, and easily implemented too. All the developer has to do is to add another view to their app, and allow a radio button choice in the preferences. The majority of the work is done in the initial view that was setup. In the preferences there could be a Standard interface, and a selector for a Distracted or Disabled or Fat Fingered (call it what you want) interface, which redraws the screen to be better used in another environment. I don't use Pandora, and as such don't have the app installed, but, could someone link this thread into the comments for the developer? Possibly they will get to work on it for the next version.
Regarding the Notification area having separate buttons, I am not sure, but I don't think the current OS Stack can handle that, though its an innovative target to shoot for in the future. Maybe someone better patent "a method of adding interactivity to notifications" so that it isn't usurped and forbidden even though this post would relegate it to obvious status.
I actually emailed this thread to the dev. I got a polite message back, but they didnt seem very interested in the idea. But they are big players, and I am only one guy with opinions so that understandable.

[APP][-v1.0.1-][14/6/11]AppGrouper, a simple, catagorised app launcher for android.

[OK, got some stuff done this weekend (not too much, got some family going over to a different country for a year, so they had to be ... sent off, merrily )]
It seems that with every mobile OS released, I hate the way you launch apps. I always end up with tons of apps and it always gets tedious to find and launch the one I want quickly.
To solve that, I've made AppGrouper. It's a quick, simple, catagorised application launcher. The idea is to pin the app to your homescreen, and launch your apps from there. It frees up all that homescreen real-estate into just one button:

You add apps by just hitting the "ADD APP" icon or long clicking on any app icon after you've added an app to a category. You can add category buttons (or rename/delete them) by long clicking on a category button.
This is version 1.0 of my first android app, so be gentle
Nah, just kidding: send/post everything and anything you find broken (I don't expect much to be) or would like different or to be added. Don't be shy Even if you don't like the colour
PS: this works great on my Desire HD, both on Froyo and Gingerbread. I'm real curious to know if it works on other devices!
--UPDATE 14/6/11--
Thanks for all the feedback, guys! It really helps!
Anyway, I posted v1.0.1:
-fixed scrolling issue
-cleaned up interface (you won't notice ... much)
-code cleanup (removed some calls which were unnecessary)
Still working on:
-swipe gesture
-multi-select of apps to be added to group
-getting the app to recognize that your trying to launch the context menu when you hit an empty GridView item (Man, that's obtuse! I really don't want to write my own onTouch listener and throw away the contextmenu code )
Also, ITS IN THE MARKET!!!11!!01!
So, if you're using this (as I suspect a few of you are ), donate me a cup of coffee for the hours I've been putting into this by buying it on the market, please! Thanks! Maybe I can take my girlfriend out to celebrate

Just installed and testing it out, really like what I see so far. One issue I have found. Selecting transparent background does not stick. The next time I launch the app the background is back to default.
And a suggestion, you might want to make adding additional apps once the first one has been added more intuitive. I had to try several different options before I found I needed to long press the existing shortcut to add new one.
Great work.
EDIT - I have an Inspire running CoreDroid 6.7.
Ah ... uh ... Heh, the transparency thing Yeah, I should fix that. I just never use that option, so I kinda left that to v1.0.0.1
As for the shortcut adding, what would you say would be a better way of doing that? Just adding a "help" menu explaining it, add a menu option to "add shortcut", allow right clicking the free space next to the icons ... any suggestions are welcome!

I was thinking long press anywhere in the open space (that's what I tried first) or "add shortcut" in the menu. You could do both if you want to cover all bases. I think long press should be adequate though. Maybe short press and icon to change it. I will keep testing and send anymore feedback your way.

I was wondering this too. One I used since i my Hero was Folder Organiser. Does this add any new features?
My understanding is that something that this app offers and Apps Organizer doesn't is that you access your apps by launching the app itself rather than a shortcut or a widget.
The upside of that approach is that it should work with any launcher and any dock. Regina Launcher, for instance, only supports apps in its dock so that's a perfect solution for that.

Not only that but I've been using a app called "Auto App Organizer" for some months now that automatically categorizes (or manual upon installation) all your installed apps like Apps,Games,Fun,Internet,System,Multimedia etc etc. You can also set shortcut icons on home screen to the categories that open as folders when clicked on home. This is the best and most efficient way ive found of installing/organizing our app shortcuts.
@ OP
If you want some ideas you should really have a look at this app.

And in addition to the problem mentioned above:
Could you add:
- a gesture to swap between categories
- an option to size categories (to get a bigger bracket even though you use an abbrevation like "dev")
- sorting personally or alphabetically
- various appearance options --> design =]
But try to keep it simple because categorization programmes like mentioned above are way too overloaded in my opinion.

I Miss My Trackball/Trackpad!

Theres only 1 thing about the G2X that I am constantly reminded of during daily use, and its that I no longer have a trackball like my MyTouch 3G has. Sure, the phone itself is like 4x (or more) powerful than it, has a nice big screen, a much better touchscreen, and can do everything and more than I ever would want it to do, but I CANT ****ING SCROLL THROUGH TEXT FOR ****!!
Am I doing something wrong here? Why is it that when I'm doing a simple google search that its so terribly difficult to edit the text if its longer than the search box? Its nearly impossible to 'scroll' to the sides, and I usually just end up deleting it and typing it all over again.
Or, when trying to select links or other small buttons without having to pinch zoom or have pin point accuracy. Just a couple swipes of the trackball to highlight it and BAM! Navigating web pages just seemed a bit easier with it....
Oh yeah, and this was brought to my attention when I was staring at the ClockworkMod Recovery trying to figure out how the **** to navigate it Is it just me, or does using the volume buttons and power button to navigate the menus just seem.... wrong?
Man, I really miss my trackball.... (But yes, I still LOOOOOVE my G2X)
..I miss it too .. we should start a petition
Yeah! Get enough signatures and demand they give us a free trackball dongle!

I'm really hoping someone will drop some knowledge on this thread and explain some feature that I'm just completely missing that allows you to scroll through text boxes quickly like.... I hate to say it.... the iPhone does. *cringe* It has that magnifying glass when you press on the text and you can slide back and forth easily to select a certain point in the text.
I'm just tired of trying to tap perfectly between the 2 characters where I want the cursor....
If you wait for gingerbread they'll have a cursor thing. The iPhone in my opinion is superior in that area and I hope Google will implement something like that someday.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I miss it, too. Swype has arrow keys (slide from the Swype key to the symbol key) that mostly eliminate the need for the trackball, but I'm using a different keyboard these days that doesn't have the arrows, and it's a real pain.

Oh god the iPhone/iPad selection is horrible. Pops up a little magnifying glass with blurry ass text that you can hardly read. Sick.
Gingerbread selection works well. You just click in the body of text then move it around using the pointer.
I do miss my trackball on my N1. Recovery is a big area that needs some kind of navigation control. I'll miss it for games like Frozen Bubble and stuff too. The trackball just seemed perfect for that game.
Well I haven't used an iphone much, but that particular feature seemed nice when not having a method of fine tuned navigation that the trackball has.
I noticed you can scroll text fine in things like this text field or the url field of dolphin browser, but when I use the text field on a web page like google it wont scroll. Is that a general web thing, the browser or android?

I like the trackpad on the G2 and MyTouch 4G.
I was just looking at the PadKite mouse http://padkite.com
but the G2X isnt on the list of phones.
Also its a whole browser (that doesnt support flash) not just a mouse.
It does look interesting and may have some promise, I'd like to try it.
Unfortunately though with the advent of the tablets, it looks like the track ball
and track pad will soon go the way of floppy discs.

I don't know why the G2x doesn't have a trackball/pad and especially any notification LEDs...I don't know why these phone makers omit the notification LED especially...I can live without the trackball (takes some learning as I do miss the trackball on my Nexus One...) but an external notification LED? COME ON...at least that Optimus buttons app works well.

There is a keyboard in the market called "Thumb Keyboard". It constantly displays directional arrows on the bottom of the keyboard. It comes in handy for moving the cursor and selecting text.

Well, if anything I'd just use the surprising amount of space on the bezel for a small touchscreen beneath or between the touch buttons. It wouldnt even have to be pressable, maybe just tappable. It would simply be another touch screen that you could slide across to navigate like the trackpad.
When I had my G2x when I was surfering or texting and messed and needed to replace text my thumb would automatically go to where the track ball was supposed to be. Then I would be like awe....since I returned my G2x my thumb has been met w/ a trackball every time ....for now :-/
haha same here i had a MT3G also and the trackball grown into me.

What's new? Who cares? Bill Gates taught us that higher numbers are better.
Enjoy!
Seems weird that they go from the dark scheme to this. I wonder if they will also do that with key lime pie?

As they have shown numerous times with their current efforts, Google has absolutely no clue how to design an intuitive UI. The My apps list is still birdied in menus, the list of installed apps now uses stupid big icons that waste screen real estate, and the interface is too flat, with insufficient visual cues what is click able and what is not. Grrr... I am smelling WP in my future.

I think Google does a great job with their UI, across JB and now the new play store. I really don't understand the "waste" of screen real estate in the Play Store.. The Play Store is made for APPS and the like, so why not let the APPS and the like take center stage inside the Play Store?
Wow this new play store app really looks good I like the new interface

Where shall I start...
When you launch the store the stuff at the bottom of the screen is 'flash sale' and other junk, the essential buttons to reach various categories of the catalog are at the top where they are unreachable without holding the phone with two hands.
The most frequently used category (my apps) is buried inside a menu option.
When you finally get to the list of apps the density of the list has been decreased. There are now fewer entries per page which is absolutely unnecessary.
Now open any app installed in the store and look at the screen. The open and uninstall buttons, arguably the most useful functionality on thus screen is at the top, where once again they cannot be easily reached without holding the phone with two hands.
Now try to press the open button. Do that five times. How many times did you hit uninstall instead? For me the error rate is about 50 percent because the buttons are too close together.
There is at least half a dozen bone head decisions I could rattle off but you get the idea. The hallmark of Google's recent interfaces is the flat white look with elimination of visual cues.
And Imo the look of android is unrefined, with icons and UI elements looking mostly like they were designed by a programmer, not a graphics artist.
It is distressing to see google develop a fanboi following not unlike the people who drink the Apple coolaid. Oh well..

Question Easier way to close all apps?

Hi guys,
I'm coming from 10 years on Samsung Galaxy devices and am still getting used to the Pixel experience.
One thing that I just can't understand is the fact that in order to close all running/recent apps, I have to scroll allll the way over to the left before I have the option to Clear all apps. In comparison, Samsung shows this option immediately and without any scrolling required. What compounds this frustration is the ongoing scroll issues others have reported on the Pixel 7 Pro. Sometimes it takes me literally 10+ seconds to scroll all the way to the left to access the Clear all button.
Why wouldn't Google place this option where the Screenshot and Select buttons are??

Is there any means of automating closing apps? Such as using an intent with Tasker that I could then assign to a gesture with Nova Launcher? Thanks.
Yea this is very dumb. I'm also hoping for a mod that can bring back the vertical recents menu. I hate the horizontal one, it sucks.
It's not necessary anymore. The phone has 12GB of RAM and intelligent background process management. If there is an app that's draining your battery in the background, go to the app's icon and long press then hit the info button. Tap battery and then tap restricted and it will no longer be able to drain your battery in the background (but it will often delay notifications).
I was hopping all around my phone multitasking yesterday for a few hours, came back to DuckDuckGo where I had a page loaded up, and it didn't even reload despite hours of Chrome and other app usage.
The close all apps button is a relic from a different time and should really be removed in flagships. It just uses even more CPU cycles to reload the app than if you just leave it there in memory.
Pixel doesn't have it so all flagships should do away with it? Maybe Pixel isn't a flagship phone.

All flagships should get rid of it because it's not necessary with how much memory they have. People who are used to using it are just wasting extra CPU cycles when they reload the apps. Let the phone manage processes itself.
10 seconds to scroll all the way to the left? Ummmm, that would equate to several hundred open apps LOL - SMH
Otherwise I too would like to see the clear all on the first screen.
The answer is - Don't.

AOSP Mods has an option to add a clear all button to the recents page bar. Requires Magisk and LSPosed.
Wait does not everyone have the clear all option if they go to the left in recent? I've had that for awhile and thought it was just part of the stock OS now

It's there but you have to scroll through all your open apps to get there.
Yah not a fan of this feature being left out !

Ummmm did you read my comment about the scrolling inconsistencies many Pixel 7 users are experiencing? Or watch the video that demonstrates what I'm talking about? It's less about how many apps are open and more about the fact that it can require very precise swipes to actually advance from app to app. Sure, the more apps you have open the longer it would take to reach the Clear All button, but I definitely don't have hundreds of apps...

This is a valid point and I certainly don't disagree. I should have clarified that I am not clearing the apps for performance or battery conservation reasons. It's more that I am admittedly obsessive about keeping my workspace "clean" and tidy I'm the same way about unread notifications and a messy notification panel. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, just a minor annoyance coming from a Samsung background.

I can understand obsession. I get that way about unread notifications, especially when a red dot is involved lol. I didn't really think about it from the obsession point and I can understand that.
I use it for entirely different reasons like switching back and forth from app to app.
Inputting info from an email to a banking App etc.
All in an instance.
I find it laughable that it's only unnecessary when pixel doesn't have it.

Glad to hear. No worries.
I don't like the "Clear all" button is all the way to the left, and I'm one of those that experience scrolling issues.
I resort to simply doing a "super violent swipe to the right" and it always results in the "Clear all" button showing up in less than a second.
For my case, the question (of whether or not to clear all) is not about memory management. Let's say I want to close one particular app (Pokemon Go almost always the case for me). I hate scrolling/hunting down that particular app to close it.
So the much easier solution is simply to "Clear all".
I solved it through AOSP Mods.
now it's exactly as I wanted
For the life of me, I cannot get clear-all button to show up. toggled "Add clear-all button to bottom of recent page" multiple times, systemUI reboots and manual OS reboots. AOSP mods and nova Launcher.
