What's new? Who cares? Bill Gates taught us that higher numbers are better.
Enjoy!

Seems weird that they go from the dark scheme to this. I wonder if they will also do that with key lime pie?

As they have shown numerous times with their current efforts, Google has absolutely no clue how to design an intuitive UI. The My apps list is still birdied in menus, the list of installed apps now uses stupid big icons that waste screen real estate, and the interface is too flat, with insufficient visual cues what is click able and what is not. Grrr... I am smelling WP in my future.

I think Google does a great job with their UI, across JB and now the new play store. I really don't understand the "waste" of screen real estate in the Play Store.. The Play Store is made for APPS and the like, so why not let the APPS and the like take center stage inside the Play Store?

Wow this new play store app really looks good I like the new interface

Where shall I start...
When you launch the store the stuff at the bottom of the screen is 'flash sale' and other junk, the essential buttons to reach various categories of the catalog are at the top where they are unreachable without holding the phone with two hands.
The most frequently used category (my apps) is buried inside a menu option.
When you finally get to the list of apps the density of the list has been decreased. There are now fewer entries per page which is absolutely unnecessary.
Now open any app installed in the store and look at the screen. The open and uninstall buttons, arguably the most useful functionality on thus screen is at the top, where once again they cannot be easily reached without holding the phone with two hands.
Now try to press the open button. Do that five times. How many times did you hit uninstall instead? For me the error rate is about 50 percent because the buttons are too close together.
There is at least half a dozen bone head decisions I could rattle off but you get the idea. The hallmark of Google's recent interfaces is the flat white look with elimination of visual cues.
And Imo the look of android is unrefined, with icons and UI elements looking mostly like they were designed by a programmer, not a graphics artist.
It is distressing to see google develop a fanboi following not unlike the people who drink the Apple coolaid. Oh well..

Hello xda members! I have just created an app called Prox that enables you to do certain actions based on swipes across the proximity sensor of your phone. There are loadouts and actions that you can set yourself. Things you can currently do with Prox:
*Launch application
*Expand notification bar
*Emulate home button
*Send a Toast
*Toggle ringer mode (ring, vibrate, silent)
Many more actions are planned for later versions of Prox!
I am a very active developer and will be updating this as much as possible. I already have a pretty awesome update schedule with a lot of new features in mind so be on the lookout here and in the market.
Because this is kinda hard to explain, I have made a YouTube video of it in action (forgive my video editing skills )
And, here is the market link if you so choose to download:
Download
Please let me know what else you would like to see in future versions of this awesome concept
EDIT:
I have decided to do a very lightweight version of the app as a free version for those of you who are wary to buy an app not knowing what it does. I plan on having it here and in the market within the week. This app will be a one time build only and won't even scratch the surface of what Prox can really do. But, it will give you a feeling of how it might work with a lot of options.
Prox Lite
I have already finished the Lite version of the app. It's already up in the Android market and you can get it here:
Download
This is a VERY limited demo version of the app and it gives you an idea of what it feels like to control your phone without touching it. Prox Lite has only 2 gestures: Flat to launch the home activity, and toward to expand and contract the notification panel. There are 5 actions in Prox Pro and there are also Loadouts than the user can customize. You can't customize anything in the Lite version and you have no control over global settings. It may seem rather limited, but it does give you an idea of what launching an app might feel like.
The Lite version will probably never be updated (I might if I get more actions that I am willing to give up). I have a lot of things in the works for Prox Pro so if you like the feeling of controlling your phone with the force (haha) then go ahead and pick up the pro version and get a lot of cool updates
This seems really fun. I personally don't have much use for it, but it is a very neat idea and looks like you've done a good job with it so far.
Here are the URLs for people who'd rather click than copy/paste:

@dismaljester Thanks for the links dude

The only problem with a free version is that this app is designed to be invisible. Once you set up your loadouts, then coming back into the app would be completely unnecessary because you can do everything related to Prox while you aren't in the app.
I might release a trial version or something to get more people looking at it though
Yea a trial version with 1-2 options/settings would be great.

I should have thought of this while developing the app. I'll probably have to start from scratch and do a lot of copy paste type stuff to get the trial one out.
I think that's probably the best thing to do because a lot of people are wary of paying for an app from a developer they don't really know. Or an app they have never heard of...

This sounds really cool. Have you considered submitting it to the Amazon Appstore?
Can't reply to replies with links in them yet. So @Nooter, what is the difference in selling them in either store? Are there pros and cons to each one. I just don't see the point in listing it in 2 places when all android phone owners already have the market downloaded.
will the toggle ringer mode silence the phone while its ringing?
You should make one for reject/silence call. I'd love that one paired w/ flat while its on my desk at work.
If it rings I can just wave over it to silence/reject with minimal effort

Toggle ringer mode just sets it to ring, vibrate, and silent for your ringtones and notifications...
That is an interesting idea. The only reason something like that won't work is because if the phone is in your pocket, the proximity sensor already detects something blocking it. I can enable this setting, but if you have it enabled and the phone is in your pocket, then it will always silence it...
Plus, Prox is disabled for incoming calls to let android take care of turning off the screen. You don't want to be launching apps and such while talking on your phone
oh also, hows the effect on battery life with this running the sensor all the time?
maybe add a 'time-out' setting for account for pocketing? Aka if the proximity sensor is trigger for a user defined period, 15 sec, 30 sec, etc which would occcur when inside a pocket prox turns off gestures until the sensor is uncovered again for 30+ seconds. that would solve the pocket silence problem No idea if any of that is possible, its just what I'm thinking id use lol.

That would deal with wake locks, which would seriously take a big chunk out of your battery. Currently, Prox only uses around a single percent of battery for a whole day of usage. I want to keep it that way

Please soon as you release a Trial version rename title at the end "NEW TRIAL VERSION AVAILABLE"

[Q] qHD running regular apps??

Hi, could any sensation owners post screenshots (if possible) for their qHD sensation running regular apps?
(ones that aren't native/haven't been updates to qhD resolution yet)
what happens to them?
I also want to know....
If someone can tell me how to get a screenshot (as i now cant root it) i will show you.
Basically it doesn't fit and its just black around the screen

This sucks and since not many devices have qHD yet it will take some time before apps are supported.

thanks a lot. Does that not really degrade the joy of the qHD? How much of 'disappointment' is it, or are you not fussed about it??
So, does Google Maps or Nav, for example, have black bars around the borders? Tried any ebook readers?

Those come on the phone pre-installed so I assume they've been made to work with qHD. And there's Kobo reader on board so it'd also have been optimized.

yeah, that's what I did assume but at Google's I/O wasn't there something about Android 2.4 making Android native to qHD. So that would suggest that up until then, it's not gonna happen. But then that's really rubbish if HTC have released it most of maps/android apps having black borders.
I'm guessing no one knows the atrix has a qhd display apps run fine on them. What makes you think apps would be different on there. Android hasn't has this problem since the first droid came out.

because it makes sense. Imagine a game. Monitor is 1920x1200 game is 1920x1200, everything is clear and pristine.
But if that game was running at 1600x1200 the game is either going to be stretched (making it look ugly) or going to have black borders around the edge.
The same applies for phone apps and the phone resolutions.
I also want to know
how about igo?
Most Android apps are now built to run on various resolutions (remember the Xoom exists, and some other Android tablets). Most of the auto scale correctly. The only one I have encountered so far that looks weird was the options menu for Current Widget. It had black borders, but that's it. Doesn't look that bad really.

Like I mentioned, Android apps can auto scale. Remember, there are devices running higher resolutions than phones. Developers need to make sure that their apps can adapt. It's not like Apple where you get HD versions of things for the iPad.

oooohhhh really! Right...that's where I was going wrong. Should have known only Apple would do something like "forcing developers to re-do apps in HD"
A lot of apps works fine on the phone. From my experience Ringdroid, Weather Widget.
Everything else Angry Birds, Mapps, Navigation all work fine no issues.
Some widgets are smaller as well, Grooveshark is slightly smaller and doesn't fit the screen but other apps fit fine.
Been playing around with it for a couple of hours any other questions?

Google asking Android devs to get rid of the Menu button

What a stupid idea. One of the things that piss me off the most in iOS is how wasteful it is when it comes to screen real estate, while on Android the unneeded buttons are kept off the screen until they are explicitly called by the user
Now Google is pushing a design paradigm that is essentially going backwards (not to mention ugly and inconsistent with current UI decisions)
Wow, all it takes is a couple of dots to fire you up? I really don't see the big deal...

notice how the ActionBar takes a silly amount of space for something that could have been added to the virtual buttons at the bottom?
To be fair I agree with op. I like having the menu button because it saves wasting some of the screen with a bar.
Some android devices are small and that bit of screen could make a three inch display more like two and a half.
Its not the dots the op is on about but the fact that you have to have that menu, whereas at moment you can have full screen app and choose to show a menu by pressing a button which frees up screen space whereas if you have a fixed menu on screen all the time then apps have less space to work with on screen.

Agreed, this is a bad idea, if I wanted a space wasting OS I would have migrated to microsofts new mobile platform.
Google are shockers at implementing unpopular changes, just have to look at YouTube over the years to see that, ICS has some pretty dumb features in it already, like the forever moving onscreen menu button, this proposal takes stupid one step further
Google should just give the option of using either. It's less consistent, but then both camps are happy.
Im sorry but that screen shot was (or at least looks like it was) takin from the galaxy nexus which was given more screen realestate for those keys. Their pure touch screen not capatative (could never spell that right) samsungy is pushing that. Cause if thats being added to every phone then that is retarded and a waste. That screen shot looks exactly like the nexus' or mayne the future of samsungs high end phones.

Who the hell has brainfarts like this? the menu button is useful as it is. Why change it unnecissarily? What are the advantages of this? More to the point who auythorises crap like this. It amazes me the amount of morons who work together and who have the ability to approve other peoples craptastic ideas.
The problem with the menu button is that:
1- no context. All options are lumped together and have no organization.
2 - mystery meat. you have no idea that there is a menu and a lot of the the time there isn't. Conditions users to be confused.
The action bar gives context (icons) and organization (desperate groups of menus), as well as let's the user know that there are options available.

Options aren't lumped together. For instance if pressing the menu button in tapatalk options come up in seperate clearly defined squares and are straightforward and logical, same in other apps like go launcher.
Yes you don't know if a menu exists, I agree, but surely a solution would be have maybe just a small symbol on screen to make user aware although I never find it a concern.
The problem with the action bar is that it wastes valuable screen real estate. I'm assuming it can be disabled for full screen apps like video players though. Or is it always on?

Interesting. Its good that you can have apps not using it but I still think a menu that can pop up but be hidden when not needed, via a button, is better and saves screen space.

Having the three dots as a small icon overlaid somewhere would be good, too.
No need to get all uptight about it. While Google may ask. Many OEM are not ready to give up the buttons yet. Even the new HTC still have the buttons. I don't like the idea myself as it just plain ugly but hey not my choice.
Personally i prefer the old capacitive buttons over the hideous rubbish that is ICS.
As soon as 1 device comes out with no menu button on it then this will be required. The best solution I can see is to give developers a way to tell if there is a menu button or not on the phone. That way the software can decide whether you need one on screen or not.

Super Tic Tac Toe is a new spin on the traditional tic tac toe game. Two players compete for victory over a large tic tac toe board comprised of nine smaller tic tac toe board. Each move a player makes dictates where an opponent may place theirs.

Please let me know if I can answer any questions about game play, what we're doing or where we're headed! If you just want someone to play, my username is nuri.
Things to note:
* Application is ad supported.
* READ_PHONE_STATE is required to send push notifications to you about game activity. Push notifications can be disabled in the settings menu.
Update: June 30, 2012
* Application no longer requires COARSE_NETWORK_LOCATION
* Miscellaneous bug fixes based on user submitted force close errors.
* You can tell you're playing a Canny developer or street team member if their is a Canny fox adjacent to their name during game play. If the fox has an eye patch, you're playing a developer.

I just saw this when using flipboard on the droid games channel, I was planning on giving it a try when I got home to check it out. Now that's it's on xda, I will definitely give it a try. Thanks a bunch for sharing it

That's awesome, looking forward to playing with ya! Which channel? I am looking through and am trying to find it. (Tried from both my Android device and iOS device.)

We know this is a major issue for players, and we apologize that it is being experience. We are currently working to resolve the latency issues, thanks for your valued input!

Thanks for your contribution .
So I am not sure if this is how it is supposed to work, or if it is an ice issue. I choose where I want to put the x, then hit play. The pay button then goes back to being red and I have to choose another x until I find a board that doesn't say "invalid board". Then I hit play again and I get a message about "call failed..." This message is about 8-10 lines long, I will try to take a screenshot the next time I play. It still sends the game to the next person to play, but the error is weird seems like it shouldn't be there.

There's quite the bad bug: Sometimes when I set my mark and press Play it doesn't accept it and I can set another one. But then both marks do stay! So I actually set 2 or 3 marks in one turn!!
It's not that easy to repoduce, appears to happen pretty much randomly. All I do is 1. set my mark, 2. press play, 3. it's still my turn somehow so I mark another box (in the same field), 4. press play again, 5. now it does get accepted but both marks are set.
on the attached screenshot notice how O has 9 but X has only 6 marks

Hey Keylan,
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. This is happening due to our ad network not having advertisements to fill that request, we've added code to detect a non-fill, as well as added in AdMob to the rotation. Will be resolved in the next update.

We've run into this behavior recently and have been trying to reproduce it, if you can send anything further via PM, that would be so great! Thanks for the great feedback!
I don't have time to try it right now but is it meant to be played on one phone? If that's the case it would be awesome to have a bluetooth support also.

Hey mikpel,
Sorry no, this is a multiplayer (and multidevice) game. We've had several requests for a version that is playable only on one phone, we will definitely let you know if we decide to go down that avenue.
Thanks for the feedback, I hope you still give it a spin!
I just want to thank you all again for the awesome feedback!
We just pushed out an update yesterday that addresses some of the force close issues. Push notifications should be working again as well. The application no longer requires the COARSE_NETWORK_LOCATION permission as we've changed a few things with our ad provider.
You can now know you're playing against a Canny developer or street team member if there is a Canny fox (with eye patch for developers) present next to their name in game.
Please let us know how we can continue to improve your gaming experience.
Thanks again!
notifications are still broken for me. i check the app every few hours and always have games waiting but never any notification.
CM9, Galaxy Nexus
What did you use to make your video? Also, I was wondering if you guys used a games framework, or started from scratch?

What is your in-game username? (You can PM it to me if you want.) We've had issues with specific users not receiving push notifications, especially if there were problems during the initial registration. Thanks for reaching out to me about this.

Our game is built from scratch, as we thought most of the offerings in frameworks are kind of bloated for the type of game this is. We do use StackMob as our backend/platform, though. I used Adobe After Effects for the video, and the music was provided by a friend, The Fat's Sabobah. I had an employee dub the music track over the video when I was done, not sure what software was used for that step. Great questions, thanks!
I was one of the first few to see this game on reddit and I've been hooked. I've even had the chance to play 3 of the devs, including nuri. Don't play them. They cheat like crazy. Or I just suck. !
Seriously though it's a nice little game that takes some strategy. Very basic ui/appearance so far but I'm sure it will get better with time.
If anyone wants to play my handle is "jirafabo"

I don't cheat, gootz cheats! (Just kidding, he's just so good it seems like he cheats sometimes, but that's just him messing with your head.)
Seriously though, if you're up for a challenge and don't want to play a Canny developer or street team member, play jirafabo, he got a grasp on the idea of the game real fast and is definitely one of our top players right now.
(And thanks for the kudos jirafabo, I'm so glad you are enjoying the game.)
is it by intention that the strategy map isn't stored? as soon as i leave it, either using the back button or "return" it's gone and no way to access it again. kinda makes it useless.

Yes the strategy map, by design, does not save currently. Saving, and perhaps autoplay, are planned to be part of the pro version.
While admittedly not saving limits its current use, many users have found it helpful when trying to think 10+ moves into the future. It is nice to be able to physically map the first 6, thus easing the mental strain.
Thank you for your feedback!
yeah, it is nice for planning. But the main use for a plan is that you can look at it later and see what the next step should be and that's missing.
I might make big plans but then I can't remember them and just make a move instead of my great plan I had laid out before :-(

Exactly, lol. What a fail of a joke on the devs end
Its funny. We have a powerful device. Open source. It legit would be like having a powerhouse pc with 16gb of ram and an i7 running windows 98. Make sense? No. Apple software is ****. Always has and always will. We don't need to taint the good word of android with this.

If something is listed as iPhone 5, then I would expect photos to show 5 rows. Shame on me maybe if the market app photos show 5, but the couple places I saw mention this launcher all show the stock 4 icon, so you can take your "some people" and kindly return it to where it came. Longest run on sentence I've written in a while, shesh.

Like I said with the Metro launcher, if I wanted my phone to look like an inferior device, I'd have just bought the inferior device.
I love the idea solely for screwing with an iPhone user... however the performance is horrid! So choppy scrolling between screens. Is this just me?
What?
Maybe, maybe, maybe......... I think of stuff like this all the time, the funny thing is I don’t have the time or patients to follow through on it, kudos to the Dev for that….. its kinda like putting the skin of a Bently on a fiat, just to find out you are not comfortable and can't corner at a 140 KM an Hour….,, but you can make a run to the market in style.
Keep it going, perhaps a hybrid may work better, I mean Apple steal stuff all the time.
What do you call a cow with no legs?
BTW, does it run on a tablet.

As someone who has themed his Windows and X-Windows in many different themes (including MacOS), I don't mind seeing themes like this.
However, I'm going to pass on this based on the permissions (which, thankfully, he's open about):
This app uses several external libraries, including Google Analytics, ACRA, LeadBolt and other ad networks. Some of these libraries require additional permissions.
* SET_WALLPAPER and SET_WALLPAPER_HINTS are necessary to set & retrieve the home screen wallpaper
* INTERNET_ACCESS, ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE and ACCESS_WIFI_STATE are required for Google Analytics, ACRA and advertising networks.
* READ_PHONE_STATE, WAKE_LOCK and RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED are required for advertising networks (currently interstitials, and push notifications may be enabled in future)
* WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE is required to cache error reports before transmission, and for rich media ads
All you guys knocking this app because it looks like an iPhone...you are missing the point. Hence the name "Fake iPhone 5 Launcher"...it is meant to poke fun at the iPhone...I think it is absolutely and utterly sweet that we can make are phones look like any phone on the market.
This app is also great for iPhone converts...they can have an Android phone but still work in the comfortable confines of the iOS launcher.
