ive flashed roms many times and i've always resorted to stock rom because its the most stable, the only times the flash counter was triggered is when i flashed back to stock. Is there a way to reset the flash counter, not that i care because if my phone break or need warranty, i dont send to for repair, rogers send me a new phone and i put the broken one in the box and send it back to them. but if ive ever had to, how can i reset flash counter?

it only gets triggered when you flash KERNEL in odin/heimdall, NOT just flashing recovery or /system.
CWM will never trigger the flash counter, period, no matter what you flash in CWM

He's asking if cwm will trip the counter in odin. It will not. I flash 3e and cwm back n forth for clean wipes before I switch roms and I'm still showing NO. Flashing a rom will from what I've read.

Silly question, but why do developers package ROMS for ODIN and not CWM? Is it a lot more work? For instance, I cannot find Rogers stock ROM for CWM.

.......the tars can for one take you back too 100 percent stock. And 2 if ur soft brickd ...and your phone wont even boot to cwm. Odin is your only answer. The tars get you back to stock recovery also

Help!

Soft bricked(total noob) just got the JIG, got into download menu.
Can someone give me instructions on how to get back to stock, gain root, and install custom ROMS/ MIUI
It be very appreciated, i'm doing this for a buddy and i don't want to give him a brick lol.
1. for restoring stock : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
2. use superoneclick to root
3. Install clockwork recovery and rom manager
4. Install custom roms.
Wait before you flash that, what firmware version did it come with???
It could mess your phone up if it isn't right.

Pretty sure it came with 2.2 but not sure.
Then I wouldn't do that 2.1 Odin one click.... Look for a stock 2.2 Odin or Heimdall, make sure to read thoroughly too.

OP might want to look at these threads:

Note: as b-eock pointed out, make sure what was your stock version before restoring it!
I've always just flashed newer than my stock to avoid that problem and it always works well for me, after bricking or when i want to flash a new rom i flash to cappy gingerbread and flash boog kernal to get CWM(clockworkmod). CWM is essential is you plan on flashing to other roms. If you plan on flashing to another rom anyways it doesn't matter which version of stock you load as long as it work so I'd just flash 2.2 or newer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
- this has all the odin 1-click flashable packages for captivate
To do everything you want to do...
flash back to stock, use 2.2 or one of the 2.3 versions. If you plan on flashing to a gingerbread rom (2.3) you'll most likely need the gingerbread bootloaders, if you don't originally flash a odin package with the gingerbread bootloaders you might be asked to install them later depending on what rom you use
incase you don't know odin is the computer program used to flash one click packages, you can find it by searching XDA, one click packages won't require it.
odin has to be open before you plug the usb into the phone putting it into download mode.
to flash to other roms you need CWM (ClockWorkMod-a customized recovery mode for the phone) the thread in this post has links to odin flashable kernals with CWM for each software build. To get CWM flash the respective kernal for the version you use. You'll need odin to flash the new kernal, its essentially stock apart from CWM. In odin select PDA and browse to the kernal zip to flash it.
you can search around XDA for oneclickroots, they will typically be odin or CWM flashable it's quite straight forward. New roms will typically already be rooted so you shouldn't have to root again.
good luck!
Does anyone know which exact ODIN i need to flash to get back to 2.2 from download mode.
You can use adamoutler's uckb2 heimdall one click. That's stock 2.2.
But whitch ODIN do i use.
Gez, HTC is so much easier then this samsung!

Unfortunately, there is currently no Odin one-click of stock Froyo (at least that I'm aware of). If you want stock Froyo, you'll need to either piece it together with full Odin, or use the Heimdall One-Click.

Take a look in this post. That should get you the right 3E recovery.
Once you have that, you can either use ROM Manager to install CWM recovery, or see if you can find a kernel with it already baked in and use ODIN to flash the kernel (look for the speedmod kernel).
Or you could flash stock GB, but that updates bootloaders and is a whole different can of worms.

Normally, the answer would be yes. However, as part of the Froyo update, AT&T managed to mess up the recovery menu, meaning that it won't flash unsigned packages. This makes getting CWM basically impossible without doing the steps in that post or flashing a different kernel.
You can root if you want to, but doing the steps in that post first will save you some headache.

I already rooted =/ , should i still try this?
If you have full ODIN, go here, and download the kernel labeled "speedmod-kernel-i897-k13c-500hz.tar" at the end of the first post. Open Odin, and in the "PDA" slot, navigate to the .tar file and flash it. That will get you the speedmod kernel, which has CWM, which you need to be able to flash.
Once it's flashed, just hold V+/V-/Power until it reboots, and then you'll be in CWM and can flash MIUI.
I'm assuming you've backed up all your apps with Titanium Backup, right? If you haven't, do that before you do anything else so you don't lose them.

[Q] Noob rooting with ODIN and counter

I'm really confused.
I have not rooted my Skyrocket yet but am itching to do so.
I'm confused about the ROM counter and yellow ! symbol. From what I understand the ! symbol and counter increases when you flash a non-stock ROM using ODIN.
This thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526 claims that flashing the recovery partition to CWM will not increment the counter. From there you can install superuser and ROMS through CWM and be safe from the counter.
However this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348 says that flashing back to a stock AT&T ROM and even installing CWM using ODIN will increment the counter (see my post starting at #98) contradicting what the other thread says.
I'm moving this discussion here to avoid plugging up the Developers section.
Can someone please clear this up before I trip the counter?
Thanks!
Todd
The counter is going to trip so .. just dont worry about it
OP... are you on 2.3.5 or 2.3.6? I rooted my stock 2.3.5 with SuperOneClick 2.2, then did the OTA 2.3.6 update and retained root... and my counter did not trip. If on 2.3.5, SuperOneClick 2.2 should still work... then take the OTA 2.3.6 update.

Every time you flash a non-stock rom, a counter increments. Supposedly it is there so your carrier or Samsung techs can deny warranty claims if they see you have modified it.
The thread I referenced above isn't supposed to increment this counter as you are flashing the recovery partition, not the actual ROM.

I used that method to root my 2.3.6 phone and it DID NOT trip the counter. I tried DooMLoRD's method and it didn't work on 2.3.6.
Just FYI though - My phone did a couple sleep deaths (where it would power off without warning while sitting idle). I had that problem with my Captivate and was not about to deal with it again on this phone. It also crashed and rebooted a couple times for no apparent reason during normal use.
Un-Rooting and returning to stock before exchange (still within the 30 days) was a total PITA!
Wound up having to do a factory reset a couple times and used odin to this put this stock recovery back in to remove CWM and root.
After all that trouble they didnt even look at the phone at the store, they just gave me a replacement.
I haven't updated to 2.3.6. on the replacement yet. I used this method to root my phone while still at 2.3.5 and it worked - full auto - one click as advertised. LOL!

I though the counter only tripped if you flashed a non stock KERNEL with ODIN.
I thought flashing custom ROMS via CWM recovery, not ODIN, did not trip counter.
Ginther,
Thanks for the info. That was informative.
Another question to anyone -
From what I have read, some say flashing any rom/kernal via ODIN will trip this counter (?)
If I wanted to return to a stock, non-rooted ROM and not trip the counter would this process work:
1. Download a stock flashable zipped up rom to the sdcard
2. Flash the stock rom using CWM
3. Install the stock recovery using ODIN
The "[MOD] ROOT | CWM | ODIN | SGH-I727 and SGH-I727R Skyrocket" post here claims flashing just the recovery will not trip the counter.
Thanks for any insight! I don't know why I fear the counter so much
Can anyone answer my post above ^^^^?

Those steps should work to get you back to a stockish form (2.3.5 would be box stock) without root. Whether or not that'll trip the counter I cant say for sure.
When I used ODIN to put the stock recovery listed above back in place - thus removing CWM recovery and root - it DID NOT trip the counter on my phone.
But it seems that some of these phones have different minds of their own so your mileage may vary... so attempt at your own risk.
I had a question about installing an OTA like 2.3.6 does this reset the counter? If so would it work to, use odin to flash and older Stock ROM then update via OTA, Kies, etc... thus allowing this process to reset the counter?

My experience is:
1. Flashing a Samsung 'official' stock ROM via ODIN will not trip the flash counter and will result in 'SAMSUNG OFFICIAL' being displayed on the download screen.
The only 'official' I-727 ROM I've found was UCKJ2 from: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=SGH-I727&r=5#regiona
Extract the HOME_SGH-I727user_CL626051_REV02.tar.md5 from the zip file and flash it with ODIN, you'll be back to stock, un-rooted, official UCJK2.
2. Flashing a non-official stock ROM via ODIN will trip the flash counter and result in 'CUSTOM' being displayed on the download screen.
The ROM flash that tripped my counter: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348
3. Flashing anything with ODIN (official or custom built-- system, recovery, modems) that doesn't contain a kernel (boot.img) will not trip the flash counter. I've flashed the stock recovery in ODIN a number of times and it hasn't tripped the counter.
But as other's have stated, why worry about it? I've returned phones to AT&T and the folks in the store didn't have a clue about checking the flash counter.

is there a way to flash stock recovery without using odin? i dont want my counter to get trip. is it possible to flash the stock recovery with CWM?

No even flashing CWM with odin will trip the counter, flashing anything through download mode will. The counter doesn't prove anything. All it says if you flashed manually instead of through Kies. But downloading stock isn't against warranty. Since it doesn't list what you flashed only that you did a manual flash if you do need to take into Samsung then just tell them till your blue in the face that you only flashed stock. They can't prove otherwise. They will need to service you. Just make sure you've taken root off and CWM off as well.

[Q] Several questions about Odin; TWRP;

I rooted and flashed a custom ROM to my phone several months ago, but now I need to take it in for repairs/replacement. So, I want to take it back to stock and reset the flash counter. But I have a few questions that I am confused about.
1) Is flashing a stock ROM with Odin, and restoring a stock backup with TWRP basically the same thing? (When/Why would you do one, or the other?). I did make a TWRP backup after I rooted, and before I flashed the custom ROM..
2) Does it matter which version of Odin you use with your phone or ROM? I have 2 versions of stock ROM for my phone (Galaxy Note 2). The later version flashes fine every time. The older one flashes fine (Odin says: Success 1 / Fail 0), but hangs when booting. I have downloaded that older ROM from 3 different locations and all do the same thing. Why would one stock ROM flash fine every time, but the other not???
3) I currently have that newer stock ROM flashed on the phone, but the flash counter says 2. I didn't know you had to be rooted to reset the flash counter with TriangleAway. So, now it looks like I have to root my phone all over again go reset the flash counter. But if I root the phone, reset the flash counter to 0, and then flash a stock ROM, won't that then increase the Flash Counter to 1?
Thanks for any help!

No its different
When u flash with odin you will on stock
When you flash with twrp(i dont know about twrp) u will get to your stock rom but rooted
Yes its matters
U use odin given with particular phone
It is because of odin version that one rom was flashing fine and not the other
No it would not once you are on stock it will disappear
This should fix ur problem:thumbup:

Hmm... well I got my stock ROMs from SamMobile.com and they did not come with Odin. I don't even see Odin available on their site. I have downloaded several stock roms from different places and they did not have Odin. That's why I have been confused if you need different versions of Odin for different phones. Also because there is no site that has a list.
But I did download Chainfire's CF Auto-Root to root and flash TWRP only. And that download did come with Odin3 v1.85. So, at this point I am 'guessing' that this is the version of Odin I should use for my phone (Galaxy Note 2 SGH-I317), but it's just a guess. So, I used this version of Odin to flash one of those earlier stock ROMs that were hanging during boot. And they still hang at boot, so I don't know if it's Odin or the stock roms or what. But this v1.85 does also flash my later stock ROM with JB 4.1.2, which flashed fine also with the v3.07 of Odin. So, both versions of Odin work for that stock, but not the other stock ROMs. Very strange...
Try googling how to flash stock rom of ur device
And use odin to flash cwm
This should fix ur problem:thumbup:

Clearing up some confusion
I ran into the same kind of issue having recieved a working version of odin with my root from cf auto root site... then came the 5.0 lollipop and the desire to ditch sprint and go to metro pcs...
everything is about a year old, or there abouts, and I see alot of posts pointing to http://www.sammobile.com/ .... first of all they most certainly do not have every firmware like they claim and they absolutly don't have old versions... they make mention of some but as far as the links working out.... :crying:
much baiting and switching with these samsung devices....
I did find a post where a guy almost sounded like he knew what he was talking about until he went on to say that it is not an exact science and it is all based on if - then , chance- happening
either works or it doesn't.... likelihood of you bricking while trying to flash stock rom is very low... but you can read what he said anyway... nothing past first post though as it doesn't lead anywhere... unless you have one of the model numbers he refers too... and even then, maybe not..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/themes-apps/27-08-2013-odin-3-09-odin-1-85-versions-t2189539
this site was the only one that had what i needed as far as the stock ROM pre lollipop
http://server14.stockroms.net/download/GalaxyS5/SM-G900P/G900PVPU1ANCB_G900PSPT1ANCB_SPR.zip
and wouldn't you know ... no link to ODIN... so .... I found a every-version-having-download-site
http://odindownload.com/Samsung-Odin/#.VY2WBPlVhBc
but of course there is no heads or tails to be understood from that site either... but at least you will have every version and don't have to worry about trying to find the next one....
Hope this helped....

[Q] Stuck on boot from embryo 6

I'm stuck on the fuzzy samsung logo right after the sharp one, and right before the colorful boot animation.
Not vibrating repeatedly, but I checked and cleaned the power button.
It was acting buggy after having embryo 7 for a long time with no problems.....Then things started happening a lot, so I changed back to 6. Then one day recently embryo 6 locked up on boot and here I am!
I don't know what caused all this, but I can't get in to recovery either. It looks like it's going to, but then it freezes on the CWM start up screen. Never could get it in to recovery, but I was able to get it in to download mode, AND it looked like I successfully flashed the stock firmware according to Odin. BUT then it froze on at&t screen during start up. AND THEN went back to being frozen on mohans fuzzy samsung screen.
I really was trying to search, but I can't find it.... Help? Anyone....?

It looked like it was trying to restart after Odin finished the install, and the phone never made it past the water drop. Froze in the middle of that part. After a long time I finally unplugged it, and touched the power button. Then it went back to the original screen I was stuck on, and I could never get it to go in to CWM. It starts to, and then gets stuck.
I'm guessing you flashed cymbaline 3.8 on embryo 6. That kernel has issues. Reflash with 3.5 and see what happens. Should be stable then

I was just trying to go back to stock. Are you saying that the kernel will still be different even though I was going back to stock through Odin?
I liked mohan's ROM's, but I guess he got a different phone. I never had problems before, but if it's a kernel I can flash will that work through Odin?
Sorry if my questions are annoying, but I just want to make sure I can do it through Odin, AND I don't want to flash it if I'm too far gone for it since I can't even get in to recovery.

I can't get in to recovery mode. Only recovery mode.
That's what I'm trying to figure out is just how to get to recovery, or anything else besides download mode.
And yes. I liked embryo 7 a lot. But something started happening about 2 1/2 months after I flashed it with no problem before that.
I love the arms at boot up..

You can have "the arms at boot up" without that rom.
To get into recovery, which seems like it's damaged for you, flash TWRP from odin.

Ok, maybe a solution could be install TWRP, or my solution could be installing the oficial android 4.1.2 from odin and then download the CWM recovery and proceed to flash Embryo.

I appreciate the help, and I did try to install the official 4.1.2 from Odin. Twice. Both times the screen from odin looked exactly like it was supposed to if it was successful. It then tried to restart my phone as part of the install process, and then the phone freezes on start up screen......and done.
CANNOT get the phone in to recovery mode every time I try, but it goes in to download mode no problem.
That's why I'm here and still scratching my head. I'm stuck using a fusion I usually just have for my kid as a toy around the house.

So u need to use Odin and flash a stock image back on the phone, go to sammobile.com and DL the firmware for ur device then place the phone in download mode load the tar file in Odin and click start, when it's done DL the latest twrp as its a little better than cwm because its updated more regularly, then use Odin to flash the recovery to the device and now u are back to stock rooted and from there with twrp, all is possible
