I am interested in volunteering some time into helping to improve the XDA Wiki in order to bring a balance to the FORUM + WIKI equation. Who among this community has time (and is willing) to assist?
In addition to this post, I have brought the issue up with Dave Shaw who is the sysop of the Wiki.
ill spare some time since im always in here answering questions. I was going to ask Mr clown too make some stickies

Thanks fknfocused. If we use the Wiki properly, we can avoid having to tax Mr Clown with routine details... And, while stickies in forums are nice, they create a bottleneck since they are so tightly controlled.
I created a group for Galaxy S 4G Owners (http://forum.xda-developers.com/group.php?groupid=421) which you may be interested in. I am simply looking for ways to help us help ourselves better...

That is one problem; another is that old-timers post with a "+1" to mean they agree... I see that there is a request outstanding to add an "AGREE" button (like the "THANKS" one)...
The first thing that we need to do is to identify what information needs to be added. In the wiki, there has not been a GS4G page created yet. I've put a stub on my User page... This is one cause for all the noob questions in the fora, I am guessing. Since, at present, searches do not exist on the wiki side.
The things that are specific to the GS4G are the ROM Mods, kernel, and CWM (which, of course, is still beta)...
Announcement: New Wiki Page evolving
Now, when one searches the XDA-Developers Wiki for "Galaxy S 4G," the researcher will be directed to an emerging Wiki page about the SGS4G. Further, if one searches for "Nandroid Backup," the search engine provides a list of links:
General Reference
Specific Reference
Among other results
As stated in my previous postings here, together we can improve XDA-Developers by adding content to the Wiki which balances the content of the Fora (which are abundantly active!).
Again I ask, "Would you please help us in this venture?"
Resurect old thread.

Just putting this back at the top of the 'unread' list... maybe people will start jumping on the 'update the wiki' bandwagon.
I put some general guides on there. But what exactly should go on there?
Edit: Some user updates to this page is a pretty good place to start, I suppose.

Wait we have a WIKI? I've been around for a little while and I didn't know that. Maybe the first step would be to get the news out in a forum layout. Meaning sticky the link. Maybe put it into the subforum listing? Sounds like a great way to put all the resources available here into an easy to use format. I don't know much about how it works but if I can help let me know.

The basic wiki format is easy to learn. Just hit edit and see how the page is actually organized.
I updated the Gingerbread section on the Samsung Galaxy S 4G ROMs wiki page to place sort of a general template. I left out the ones based on leaks as they are pretty outdated.

Good to know that there has been interest in the SGS4G Wiki. And what a resource it has become!!
Remember, each page that gets added should also be added to the Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G category:
There's also a group for Galaxy S 4G owners...
Also, there is a group for Galaxy S 4G owners... Don't forget to add yourself to that, if interested in collaborating...

can you take 5 seconds to look at the posts at the top of the thread before posting this crap?
really its posts like this that ruin xda
Here are my issues with this thread:
You already created a thread asking this exact same question last week.
You joined XDA 10 days ago, have 31 posts (as of right now), and have created 13 new threads. Its been a while since I was in algebra class, but the ration of posts:threads is definitely out of whack.
Going forward, please take a moment to review all available information before asking a question or opening a new thread. In addition to the forum search, you were prompted to review similar topics during the creation of each of the 13 threads you have amassed up to this point.
We are XDA Developers, not XDA Spoonfeeders. In the end, a little time spent looking will go a long way.

LOL...this thread is funny...but I think NotATreoFan said it best. Stop creating so many threads...if you already created a thread with a question that's not answered...just bump it, don't start a new one...this is a new forum and we would all like to keep it clean of useless threads.
Also, Dude if you don't like developers, keep your stock phone and don't come here to talk smack. These people put hours of work in to make EVERONE'S phone better. You don't like the manner in which it's done or the way the forum is handled, then leave and keep your stock ROM. Don't blatantly disregard the rules of the forum and expect help or a straight answer without getting some flack for it.
Sorry, I don't post much, but with jerks like this, I can't just not say something.

you guys waste all this time making these crap comments... how about making a decision.. you can..
1.) answer the original question
2.) ignore the post completely
3.) LOCK the post and comment to 'search' the threads..
better than trying to beat somebody up in 'virtual' world..
this is what I mean by some people having nothing better to do but flame somebody for making a simple mistake.. yes as a newbie I don't quite understand all the 'terms' for the roms, etc.. so that's why I asked this basic question...

The easiest way is to back up all your stuff and flash this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042
Its a rooted Stock ROM with the update.
That or flash any of the ROM's from the Dev section.
I should add that once you download it, rename it PD98IMG.zip and put in the root of your SDcard. Check MD5 Sums and if they match up, power down your device, then boot into hboot (vol down + Power).
Let the bootloader find the image and then volume up to update.
Thanks for the help! You would think being an A+ and DELL certified computer technician, I could figure this Android stuff out but it's a whole different world. I appreciate the help and look forward to many more here.

God forbid you ask a question on the General Forums... Welcome to the asshole filled world of XDA buddy! I can't wait for the Mango Phone 7 update!
True, you do have a slight point but I've noticed that the search around here works about as well as every other forum. You do a search for something and you get hundreds of results that have no bearing on what you actually searched for.
Hey, what's wrong with spending 2 hours going thru a 200 page thread looking for an answer that someone can answer in 2 minutes. LOL.

Quite true. There are also people who are well aware of the browser version of the sites two search boxes, and long for the day when the XDA app will be a fully functional alternative.

For the most part, I see those posts get answers anyways. Even if it isn't from a frustrated veteran, there usually someone that just learned it themself that is willing to help. Trust me, I understand the frustration, but when you go to the stickies and see the guides and videos say they are outdated, you start to wonder if the answer you found is outdated too. I think many find it more reasurring if they can get a more current and direct answer.

The only reason they are outdated, is because the hack, gets updated once a month, and its one version 11 so there would need to be at least 11 videos, for each version of the hack kit, which would require unrooting the phone then downloading the hack kit (every time), then making a video. That is pretty time consuming.
The reason the outdated videos are posted, is an effort to educate people, on what they are doing, even if the hack kit has changed a little bit it still gives you a general idea of how it works.
With that said, this very topic, is covered in the f.a.q. of the guide, I updated about 3 weeks ago when the ota update came out, and there was 4 threads saying "my update failed and I'm rooted".
Apparently I do not know how to read.
I recently had a problem finding a Rom on the site. I kept going to all the pages and nothing I did worked when I tried to bring up the Rom on my computer. I asked in the section Galaxy Nexus for Verizon. Is there an update to my Rom. Instead of getting an answer I got things like can't you read huh. I then asked a direct yes or no and got a Yes Man answer. I tried to click on the title Rom and it kept taking me to another forum page and nothing there showed the answer.
After several nasty you got be kidding stuff. I went to my phone and went on the site from my phone. When I clicked on the title Rom on the page it took me to the site where the download was. My browser on my computer was not working with the site.
If someone would have said that or said something like did you try clicking on the title using another browser it would have been nicer than all the nasty remarks I got.
I am new to this and I do not spend a lot of time reading the site as I am very busy working and raising a family. I love having the site and I love using the Rom's for my phones. I wish people would be nicer and not so arrogant.

Don't take this the wrong way. I honestly peruse as much as I can in the morning and then try to respond to what I can during the day. But 99% of the time I run out of time to reply so it's far more reading than typing.
If left on your own the other thing you can try to do is refine your search criteria. Try to get as specific as possible and include the device name or model. This may get you closer to the answer you're looking for as well.

Root lucid 1 was posted in the 'General' forum, not in Questions & Answers.
Lg lucid problems with fpse was posted correctly in the Q&A forum. However, there is no forum dedicated to this device, there is likely to be very little development for, or knowledge of, it as a result. Also, this post appears to be asking about ways to circumvent licence checks on a Playstation emulator - XDA does not exist to support any form of piracy, and you would be much better off asking these sort of questions somewhere else such as the emuparadise forums instead.
People aren't deliberately ignoring you but many, like me, will skim through the threads, click on anything that sounds unusual, and help if they can - if they can't that is another person who has viewed your thread, and with over 5 Million members that will happen quite frequently.
I think looking at the post and not replying isn't such a big deal, but i have been in the same situation where someone has time to type a condescending reply to try to make the person feel like crap, but not enough time to help with the answer except to say its in one or more of the 80 pages of the current thread.
so when I see a question that has been answered before and I know the answer I sometimes just takes the 30-45 seconds to quickly answer the question without bothering to point out that its been answered before.

XDA is a Developers community, not a Tech Support Helpdesk. We are not here to teach you the basics of how to use your computer.
The suggestion of testing in another browser is something you should do by default if a website doesn't work properly.
We're happy to help newcomers, but there is a limit to every person's patience. This limit usually lies at the point where people show up on an advanced tech community and don't even know how to properly use bloody Google.com. And because this happens at least 40 times a day, that patience is stretched very thin for most.

The gear icon behind the search bar is Advanced Search. There you can select Posts for the result as opposed to threads. (bottom left.) This will list the individual posts.
And if you're in a thread, above the thread is another search bar: Search in this thread. This will show all the posts in that thread with the keywords you type in there.
It's not useless if you look for more than 3 seconds

You guys must remember,we all cant be jolly all the time, developers have jobs and families also, besides doing this for you guys for free, hours and hours and days, maybe weeks go by while trying to get the bugs out of a rom that everyone wants, while in the meantime, the guys boss or ole lady is yelling at them to get their ducks in a row and quit slacking, when all their trying to do is contribute to the community and make you happy, soo when a developer or some other forum contributor doesnt answer your question right away, its not you.Just be patient someone will eventually come along and answer it,also you need to remember alot of questions that are asked, can easily be google or searched here on the forum and you will find the answer yourself or figure it out on your own.Your right though at the same time,we shouldnt be grumpy towards people trying to fix something or learn.

Replace with the problem you are facing or are prematurely searching for; for those that think ahead
Replace " +root or unbrick " with "ROM" or "kernel" or "recovery" to quickly search XDA and "similar" sites
Note: that is the difference in having "similar:some.site.name.something" and having "site:same.as.before.***
There are plenty of one liners for google out there that makes finding the content you want easier. Such as searching for a file type or under a very specific address; like the forums related to the "epic 4g" like so
Code:
rom or recovery or stock epic 4g site:http://forum.xda-developers.com/
XDA and many of the other forums that I haunt or participate on yield better results using searches like the above but nothing beats having a human to ask, so when all else fails find a section that relates some what to your line of questioning and post it on someone else's thread (if it's active) or find a section of the forum structure that has a descent amount of old and new active threads and post a new thread with all the steps you already taken and where you want to go, then sit back and wait for help or better yet, continue looking for others that have already solved or done the action that you're wishing to take and use those results to "bump" your topic; usually one new post per day max so edit and time stamp the edits so readers that want to help see that you're doing what you can.
Hope this helps others from pulling out their hair in frustration

You need to learn the meaning of the word 'troll'. None of the people who answered you were trolls or trolling, especially given the fact that one was an RC and one a Mod. They were posting their opinions on the subject, which I happen to agree with. Searching is the key to using XDA properly and people should always search before posting (after all, it is forum rule number one). Usually if a person asks a question that has been answered before I'll post both the solution and a line asking them to search before posting in the future. I don't really know what you expected from this thread since you haven't posted it with any clear intentions and when people gave their opinions on the article you just disregarded them as being trolls. Yes, the search tool isn't very good but it usually functions well enough and when it doesn't Google almost certainly does.
Oh, and you might also want to fix the quoting in the OP. You've started it at a random place in the middle of a sentence while I'm sure you meant it at the start/end of one of the paragraphs.
grumble grumble troll under a bridge. Shall I pay a toll to cross?
I think the OP has mental issues.
Wonder if he knows.

More likely is "once burned twice shy" as the web is full of forums that are hunting fields instead of developer Meadows. XDA has yet to show me anything but the most helpful people but misunderstood posts do happen.
And to mental issues; who doesn't? Last time I looked through the medical diagnosis of mental illness, just about anyone you meat can be convicted to an institution... Just have to document it and submit it in such a way that makes them appear to endanger themselves or others...
More than likely this interaction with strangers serves as some kind of emotional release or gratification. Some just like to stir.

Ah, come on peoples where trying to help some now the first two pages make little sense. How'bout an edit that includes your statements quoted under or above relevant parts of the linked statements? Curate the web and good things will happen.
