Software Update - HTC Inspire 4G

I have a rooted Inspire and just today it is offering a software update. When I try to do it, All I get is the android icon with a triangle with exclamation point on it. Pulled battery, rebooted phone but it is still bugging me to update. I wanna get rid of it. How??

The easiest way is to back up all your stuff and flash this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042
Its a rooted Stock ROM with the update.
That or flash any of the ROM's from the Dev section.

I should add that once you download it, rename it PD98IMG.zip and put in the root of your SDcard. Check MD5 Sums and if they match up, power down your device, then boot into hboot (vol down + Power).
Let the bootloader find the image and then volume up to update.

Thanks for the help! You would think being an A+ and DELL certified computer technician, I could figure this Android stuff out but it's a whole different world. I appreciate the help and look forward to many more here.

Or at least be able to do a search for the answer to an extremely common question first.

God forbid you ask a question on the General Forums... Welcome to the asshole filled world of XDA buddy! I can't wait for the Mango Phone 7 update!

True, you do have a slight point but I've noticed that the search around here works about as well as every other forum. You do a search for something and you get hundreds of results that have no bearing on what you actually searched for.

Hey, what's wrong with spending 2 hours going thru a 200 page thread looking for an answer that someone can answer in 2 minutes. LOL.

So, you search first and don't find it, what is one to do? Seems no one is welcome, unless you are flashing a new rom everyday. LOL.

If you search and don't find it your not reading, by going to the search function in the general forum, and typing in update ( just update nothing else) it will pull up about 8 threads dedicated to what this thread is about.
Everyone is welcome, and we enjoy helping someone when they follow the rules of the forum, which includes actually trying to search for an answer like most of us have, instead of asking someone to hand it to them.

I don't use xda search. I use Google.
9 out of 10 times it provides me with xda-sourced posts.

Most people, I'm guessing, don't realize that there are 2 search boxes. The top one searches the entire board. The lower one searches recursively from your current location.

Quite true. There are also people who are well aware of the browser version of the sites two search boxes, and long for the day when the XDA app will be a fully functional alternative.
XDA is a lot quicker for reading, but can't do some important tasks that are important to a serious XDA member...
Robust thread search, thanks button, easy copy of thread url for pasting into posts, etc.

For the most part, I see those posts get answers anyways. Even if it isn't from a frustrated veteran, there usually someone that just learned it themself that is willing to help. Trust me, I understand the frustration, but when you go to the stickies and see the guides and videos say they are outdated, you start to wonder if the answer you found is outdated too. I think many find it more reasurring if they can get a more current and direct answer.

The only reason they are outdated, is because the hack, gets updated once a month, and its one version 11 so there would need to be at least 11 videos, for each version of the hack kit, which would require unrooting the phone then downloading the hack kit (every time), then making a video. That is pretty time consuming.
The reason the outdated videos are posted, is an effort to educate people, on what they are doing, even if the hack kit has changed a little bit it still gives you a general idea of how it works.
With that said, this very topic, is covered in the f.a.q. of the guide, I updated about 3 weeks ago when the ota update came out, and there was 4 threads saying "my update failed and I'm rooted".

Apparently I do not know how to read.

[RaNt] Read before sounding stupid

These developers put so much time into these roms and customizations to keep answering the same questions in a thread. I mean Cmon. I know every last one of them, with the kindness of their hearts, answer anyways. But I read every post and its the same damn questions, about the same damn topics and problems. If your writing the question,I'm sure u can read. So here we go.....
1. Open xda and on main page, click on more, then down to search
2. Type your search. Weather its a question, theme, kernel, rom, pornstar. Whatever just search.
3. If search is down (never been for me), then type in Google.com and type your search and then type "xda" afterwards. (Ex.Miui Inspire Xda). Now tell me what you see.
4. READ THE OP!!!! 95% of questions can be answered by reading the first 6 posts. Its fairly easy. And if you don't see it,then look through the pages. Or try methods 2&3.
....point is these developers provide great work with much pride. And I know they love to help and offer great support, but I know many MAY want a break from the spamming of the same crap every other post "what's the recommended radio" or "where can I download the kernel". I mean open your eyes. Even a blind folded, stuck in the basement, sleeping Stevie wonder can find the answers. Your is a android, meaning resources all over the place, put it to use!! This is my rant in support of developers all over!!!

Great advice. Its just as bad over an AndroidCentral where every post is the same question as the previous thread, lol.
Well I didn't wanna be a jerk but I mean over in the kingdom section, capy has to explain how to wipe data through recovery. Instead people post about flashing fullwipe 1.3 and idk y. I mean damn he posted a damn YouTube video. Maybe ppl can't read but a video and still can't figure it out?

Anti-Rant:
Guys, much as I agree with you, there's another side to the story.
Many of these dev threads can get to be thousands of posts long, dragging across hundreds or more pages. Take as an example threads on Capy's work where he has threads of hundreds of posts in two different sections (Inspire and DHD), and that's just one ROM in question, never mind if you don't know which ROM you want.
Then, there's the search function. Right. If you're a n00b, you don't necessarily know what terms to use because you don't know what the F you're talking about yet. And those of us here ranting about doing a search don't help when I've seen the term kernel spelled Karnel, Kernal, Karnal, Carnel, and many other variants.
What I'm getting at are four things, the first being the most important.
1) Devs must be clear in their documentation, and put thorough and explicit instructions in the first few posts. Many of what YOU think are stupid questions arise from unclear instructions. For example, I used the CWM 'factory reset' function before Capy posted the video, so I wasn't sure if I needed to wipe partitions individually.
2) Be sure you have "clean hands" when criticizing others. I've seen so much immature teenager 'chopspeak' here (y dont u try 2 wipe agn), misspellings, and other grammatical mistakes that we must be aware that those of us who have not been here for any amount of time have not acquired a knowledge base and don't know what terms to use or what to ask and how to ask it.
3) There are also off topic posts in every thread which add to the difficulty when you're trying to get to the meat of a problem. Have you always posted specifically on-topic information every time you post in a thread? I doubt it. Be mindful that if a new user is casually trying to come by information, reading through dozens of pages peppered with OT 'chat' can be daunting.
4) If you see a question being asked that was not specifically addressed in the first post, recommend to the dev that it be added to an FAQ that should be contained in the first couple posts.
Of course, if the instructions are clear, and a stupid and/or redundant question is asked, then the poster must be *****-slapped into submission.
Just my two cents. Let's be sure we're not contributing to the problems ourselves.
If the dumb asses at AT&T would quit jacking with Android, there would be a lot less of that here. There are too many noobs that are not going to take the time to properly learn, nor do they want to. They just want to quickly root so their hsupa will be enabled, they can sideload, they can remove AT&T crap, etc... Probably going to get worse when AT&T drags ass releasing the gingerbread update. Too bad there is no one click for the Inspire.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
@bill, and the flip side to that is that maybe the person needs to read all 100 pages. I really don't have a lot of sympathy for people who say they don't have the time. we are all busy. it doesn't take that long to
skim. I spent a few days reading how to root before I did it and everything worked out. days, not minutes.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App
@Billy,bro idk if u just wanna rebel against the topic or not but its plain as day. Read and search it period. Maybe in one thread kernel is misspelled. Then scroll through the pages and ill certainly say you will find your word. And if it does say kernal, etc then search the dang thing till it works. Y'all have pity on these people that just can't do more than just look it up on their phone. And most the time the OP has all the information and if not on the first 5 posts, then ill be certain if they read to the first 20 posts, they will see the same related questions. I see it in almost every posting after the OP's. I'm not criticizing nor downing anyone,I'm simply saying that give these threads and forums a break. Ill bet you if you deleted every post that was a repost of another, more than half of the xda android, windows forums would be cut in half or more. Instead of asking same questions, state what u did and how you did it. Then the OP can see what step u went wrong. Instead of "I flashed the newer version over the older one, nothing works what do I do?" when clearly the OP states to wipe and through cwm. I work with ignorant people and lazy asses. If you own a Inspire and plan to root and hack, first learn to read. If not you will be bricked

I agree with the OP 100%. Over half the posts are from people who bought their first Android phone. Ran home jumped on Google to find out how to "root" because they heard about it. Jumped into it without reading anything. Then when something breaks they demand help. Well you should have read and read some more. Before I rooted I read about all the problems that happen, so if they did I knew what to do. I have been on this site for 2 years now and it is getting worse and worse.

So, your lucky... what if after your hours, and days, and weeks, and years of reading, something went wrong... you wouldnt ask for help?
I got my phone, went to youtube, asked a few questions here and was rooted with in the hour..
This is my first android phone, I come from the iphone if that means anything. I had a lot of jailbreaks under my belt, but rooting was not the same..
heres what I do...
I read (HELP ME JAILBREAK MY IPHONE) thread.. I have two options, click... or dont click... If all I'm gonna do is go in the thread and cry about a search bar.... I dont click!!!!! If I'm gonna help I'l click, and I dont cry about it.. my point? Don't click on threads you dont want to read!!!

it's simple bud, you dont HAVE to click on a thread you have already seen a 100 times. Or you can, and be helpful.. make the android world a better place. It works two fold... people can feel ok about asking even stupid questions such as the thread with the guy asking about the Thunderbolt on ATT!!!
and you build a community with help for eachother.. which in it self leaves the apple world in the dust... bunch of smug stuck ups, that walk around with thier eyes wide shut! lol I know... I was one of them!

If that question has been answered many times, it does get annoying. It doesn't take too much time just to search. Most people that have asked questions recently are too LAZY to look for the answer. There is a 99.9% chance that threads which were created this week were questions answer already many times. We are here help our fellow community members, not spoon feed them.

@Billy :if your having that hard of a time,do as I did with Adam and id10terrordfw..PM them asking a quick question that's more like "I did this and followed that and used recommended radio and everything but no go,what did I do wrong?" See difference between that then asking "how do I flash the radio that's recommended?" Or "how do I wipe in recovery?" Or "you need to fix this in next update." I mean come on. You have to have a pretty-much rock-stock ROM for this update to work. You could just install attn1's version of the stock ROM with this update already applied, then properly rooted and packaged for installation:

After installing, the update screen will show that you are up to date.

its probably because to newer users, its a little intimidating to go thru many posts and threads, and they also know some info could be outdated. Maybe on the site, there should be an official, updated "how to" glossary or wiki.

Because the question was already answered for one thing.
It's also forum rules, and I've seen it mentioned by Mods a million times.
Community moderation...I let people know in the hopes of breaking a habit before it starts: posting a new thread for every single question that crosses their mind, and, eventually, expect to be given answers to everything, getting even more reluctant to do the "work" of finding answers and learning about their phones on their own.
Next thing you know, we're up to our necks in duplicate posts. Then, NOBODY will want to answer ANYTHING, because they have to wade through 4 tons of duplicate crap, and it ain't worth it.
How hard is it to Google "inspire OTA update root" ?

As to the last question: speaking for myself, I am tempted to just ask question, not because I can't effin search, but some of my questions, one has to weed through all manner of material on multiple threads, some pertinent, some not, since February to ascertain "the" answer. This is all well and good and maybe an exercise in disciple, like back in school or something, but maybe some of us just get impatient in an effort to save time. That said, I am fully on board with the forum rules, because da rules are da rules, and this is where one has to come for this sort of stuff :-D.

Oh I agree. Everyone has questions, and everyone has opinions. There are often times wrong/incomplete answers to things, and both yes and no to the same question.
It's not necessarily easy to parse through and distill all of this stuff. But it can be done. I often times run across answers that go both ways, and that can be unsettling, especially if it involves potentially bricking a device if you get it wrong.
It's just a question of analysis, and I concede some people are more comfortable doing it than others. I guess I never expected to be handed all of the answers to basic questions.
I've always preferred searching over posting in asking a question, as it usually always provides the answer *quicker* than waiting for someone to post back an answer to the question.
Not to mention, if it turns out it was a much easier answer to find than first apparent, or that it was one's own oversight responsible for a problem that motivated the question, one can bypass getting antagonized by jerks like me.

I'm not pretending anything. Searching before posting is forum rules, often cited by mods. I happen to feel it's important enough to remind people, and I'm not the only one. It's called community moderation.
No, a lot of stuff does NOT get outdated. Some do, like radio flashing and not needing eng s-off, but others don't, or haven't yet and don't look like they're going to.
For example, rooting remains the same basic process as when it started. One of two methods are available, and likely there won't be any new ground-breaking discoveries, at least for a while. Maybe it will change in the future, but it hasn't yet.
Another example... Until someone makes ATT want to push their otas to rooted devices, the process by which to update one's rooted phone with those OTA updates will remain the same. Etc....
And Google works just fine, better than the built-in search function of many sites.
Saying "I can't search because search sux" is a cop-out, plain and simple.

Umm, no. At least not on the full site. If you look right above the forum frames (up, up a little more, no down, yeah, there, on the right) you'll see the search you should be using. It searches recursively from wherever you are. Forum home? Searches the whole board. Inspire home? Searches the whole Inspire board. Inspire Dev? Yep, just the dev section. It goes clear down to searching within a thread. Hardly sucky.
I have been rooted for about a month now and have flashed several custom roms but am now back at the stock rooted rom desiring the latest at&t ota update. I read earlier in this thread that because I'm already rooted the update won't install. My question is can I just flash the attn1 rom even though I rooted my device using bubby's root method?

It should work fine. All attn1's ROM needs is s-off. Bubby's give you that.
I'm not positive but I think att1 updated rooted stock rom w/sideloading is in the form of pd98img.zip file which u need to put on on your SD card but not in a folder. Then turn off fastboot in settings, power off your phone, then while holding down the vol down button push your power button. The phone should boot into hboot where it will search for the pd98img for a few seconds then ask you to update. Once it's done you can reboot & delete the file off your SD card cause it's around 300 or so mb. Once your all done with that you also might want to get the matching ril file for the new radio that's in the update which you can flash in cwr.

Had you bothered to do ANY reading or took 10 seconds to search, you would have found your answer. Maybe you can get where I'm going with this, but judging by the fact that you didn't look through any other forums, posted in the wrong place, and didn't search, I'm going to guess you won't. Now why would I bother to read, search, or try to post in the correct forum when I could simply click "new thread" and type in whatever question I have, and get the answers from an entire community of people? Seems much easier to have everyone else do the work for me. Right?
I love you guys.

So much for XDA being a place to learn. Guess if you don't already know you're on you're own! Good attitude guys!
To answer the OP, CM 7.1 was recently released out of release candidate status. The charge however is not on the supported list yet. There's still a lot of work to be done before it's ready to be loaded on anyone's phone. Hang in there. There's a good amount of other ROM's currently available for the Charge though that are worth looking into. (Humblecomb, GummyCharged, DCTQ to name a few)

There are literally two new threads about this a week. You don't even have to search. Just look in the Q&A forum and click back one or twice. Hell...you don't even have to do that right now. There's one started two days ago that is the first non-sticky post on the first page as I type this.
Asking questions is fine, but we have community guidelines, FAQ's, and search buttons for a reason.
The first response answered the question. (And mentioned the fact that this is the wrong forum for Q&A)
Maybe all the mini-mods should just hit the report button and let the real moderators do their job instead of posting a bunch of useless crap. If you don't want to see the useless posts maybe replying and putting them back at the top of the forum is not such a good idea.
Questions or Problems Should Not Be Posted in the Development Forum

Last time I checked cm7 is development just about everything is a question posted on here and if I knew what to search for I would didn't know people got their panties all in a bunch over the wrong forum topic but I appreciate the response that was helpful Thanx a lot

I was in agreement that most of the responses were uncalled for until the OP responded. It's difficult to feel bad when that attitude is taken towards people that actually contribute to the forum.

CM7 is development. Your question about CM7 is not development. Your question is a question. If you would like to know what you should type in the search to find out about CM7, first try "CM7". I am sorry the developers and mods who spend their time making our phones awesome and maintaining the forums were not nicer to you when you posted a question in the development forum after not reading a single forum guideline. I'm sure they're sorry. Hope this helped.

Maybe I was rude, but I went and typed in CM7 in the search box for just the DROID Charge forums (all of them) and came up with 12 topics. Searching for cyanogenmod came up with 5 topics. I could also search either of those items with droid charge added to them in Google, Yahoo, or Bing, and end up with the most relevant info being on the first page of results too. Seeing that any one of those options would have taken less time than it took you to create this thread, which was initially in the incorrect forum, maybe you can see why people responded the way they did. Why should anyone else put forth any effort when you couldn't take 30 seconds to even begin to search on your own?
All questions like this should automatically spam the OP with PMs of LMGTFY links.
It's really quite ridiculous.
Honestly, if you're not smart enough to form a relatively basic search like so many people have laid out here in this and other related threads (oh so many threads), then you really shouldn't be attempting to do something so complicated as loading unsupported OS builds onto your phone.

In the upper right hand corner, there's a "SEARCH BAR", you simply type in keywords to your issues and it will bring up posts with relevant topics. We would all love to hold your hands here, but that wouldn't allow for you to use them for typing into that search bar, now would it?

I'm not trying to be a prick, but you have to help yourself until you have exhausted all possible avenues of help, before enlisting our help. Not trying is unacceptable, not trying as much as possible is equally so.

[Q] OTA out of nowhere. Can't install it - what's going on?

Today (10/27) I got notified of an OTA on my Skyrocket, and I haven't heard anything about one. I am running 4.0.4, rooted, with CWMR v5.5.0.4.
I did a nandroid backup, backed up all my apps with TB, and set SuperSU to survival mode. Then I let the OTA download, it installed and then it rebooted - into recovery. I continued the reboot from CWMR and when it finished the boot, the OTA said it was interrupted and couldn't finish. I cannot find a zip file on the phone anywhere to manually flash.
Tried this twice with the same result. What is going on? Where did this OTA come from anyway? What should I do? I think rebooting into recovery is interrupting the process somehow, but I am at a loss as to what to do now.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

So this post could've been left at one reply telling the guy that he can't install and should've looked in general. But no, feeling the need to further stomp the guy into the dirt was at the top of the priority list. If you saw someone already make the point, why not report and move on? Saves a lot more time.

I'm not really lazy, I just don't have all day to hang out on a forum like some other people. I told you that I did a quick search and when I couldn't find an answer, I asked a question - in the Q&A section.
Sorry I'm not an expert in everything and ruined your day by asking a question.
You could have just ignored my post, but I guess you needed to prove how superior you are. I'd looked at some of your posts and a lot are like the one above - no help, lots of ego.
Thanks for the no help. The whole point of this forum is share information and help each other out. Guess you missed that stickie.

In his defense I was able to find an answer to your question on Google fairly quickly, but then again I have no clue what you Googled.
Still, the first reply gave an answer to your question and crazy came in well after that was posted. He didn't have to, yet he went out of his way to make you feel like crap.

OTA Update can not be Done on Rooted phone. Not worth going back to stock for this Little Update. Wait for Jelly Bean....
He didn't make me feel like crap - complete strangers do not do that for me. It's just annoying because posts like that can drive people away.
However, I did feel bad after I realized that there were several other threads on the same topic. I usually make an effort to avoid duplicate posts, but in this case I was in something of a hurry. In any event, I found my answer - I'm not taking the update, it's not worth the effort to go back to stock recovery.
Thanks!

There's a good amount of normal people on here. If the site was how you describe it they shouldn't let anyone who isn't a developer join. "U NO MAKE ROMS OR KERNELS U NO WORTHY OF FORUM" is basically what's spewing from your mouth. Have whoever's in charge kick every single member off of the site if they're not a dev since that's the attitude you wanna have.
Otherwise, stop being such a damn bully and stop giving the site a bad rep. He made a mistake and got his answer. You clicked the thread, saw the answer and still decided to pummel him. That's called "being an asshole".

Very cool story. However, the forum is called xda developers and this is a place for developers. Read the rules and ask the moderators what this place is about, and they will tell you the same thing. Also, you have a potty mouth.
