Why aren't we using the Wiki?

It'll be a lot better to keep people organized. People keep asking the exact same questions in the forums because they're not reading through every single post, and frankly, who wants to?
If we keep everything in the wiki pages, we update the information once and it'll be like having a nicely-formatted OP for everything related to development, especially now that the GB root just came out, people are gonna have more questions and we could keep them updated with the latest links to tools, etc.

I might throw this golmar88's way as he has created and updates the Bible. IMHO, I feel with little devs on this phone and only 1 moderator, things got messy in here SUPER FAST! with us all being noobs, ive seen questions asked quicker than typing in a search in google. Its like people post/start new threads and clutter the forums rather than PM'ing the OP or someone who may have an answer. I try to frequent each sub-forum to assist where i can, but now its impossible because of the new threads being posted every day.

I'm so down to pitch in 'cause then we can just post a link to the wiki instead of repeating ourselves and if someone winds up finding a better way to do something, they get the latest version of the fix in the wiki. I'll look into editing a few things, it's just a matter of getting the devs to get into it too.
Pretty sure you can't edit the wiki from the XDA app though.

Idk know if anyone has done the wiki yet that's not on the forums but I could try and make one if someone wants to compile the main forum links to me via email or pm ill start working on it tomarrow... ill only do it with permissions from the devs b/c there the tru soldiers working there ass off to make it all possible. Also the wiki could include a way for the devs to find testers on lastst developments.

I noticed a lot of users repeatedly asking the same questions in new pages of threads since it's really hard to read through the whole thread to find solutions. It took me 10 mins reading the manual on how to edit the wiki to figure out how to do this.
Hopefully in the near future we can have updated guides (since anyone can update them) which won't be restricted to a single author. Life gets in the way and people may not update the posts to include new info. This way we can start linking users to guides/info on the wiki instead of repeating or venting frustration at them.

Community issues: Campaign for a fresh start

You probably already know me from my other threads, mostly the support thread. If not, I would like to give a brief introduction: in june, I received an upgrade from at&t and decided to purchase the infuse 4g my first android phone.
I was thrilled with its performance, and the community started off strong. ROM's were coming out surprisingly fast, actually too fast for me to figure out which one I liked best.
I began to see that the developers threads were getting cluttered up with silly, often repeated questions, so I created a support thread to help lessen the load for the devs. I know it wasn't a perfect solution, but I helped build a small team of people who have been incredibly helpful so far, who I am beyond impressed with.
Now comes the bad part. Even my support thread, originally designed to avoid clutter, has become a landfill of lazy people who don't look for the answer to their question which has been asked and answered 30 times already.
All the devs have been subjected to so much bs that they are afraid to even release their work. Everyone flames everyone like crazy, but none of you guys can help the community. I am disgusted by most of your behaviors, and hope that you see how childish your arguments are.
Now, for my point: this community is still young, and we have accomplished so much already. We have the chance to have one of the strongest development teams out there, and a kick-ass community, in which we look out for each other's best interest.
I would like to propose a way to get things started again: we need a campaign to delete clutter/flame.
Neo works hard, but we need to help him out. Everyone, I urge you to look through your posts, find bad ones, and mark them in some way to be deleted. This is in order to resuscitate this potentially unbeatable community.

as after his intervention members have started behaving themselves and Neo has removed/locked unnecessary threads this forum is at peace.

if issues are not resolved then it never will be as no one will accept blame and any such thread will eventually result in blame game.
right now see that people are just paying attention to information,now calling them for campaign is also a distraction.

Hey, thanks for sharing your opinion with me in a respectful manner. However, I feel that the issue is not yet resolved, and the general forum is definitely the appropriate place to post it. The development is virtually at a standstill and I am not talking about gtg, but the other devs and would be devs who are now discouraged. I find that although your response was polite, it was completely inappropriate, especially considering what my original post stated. If you have an issue with my posts please message in private as opposed to calling me out/ racking up your post count.

I doubt the devs read half the crap, and know that most if the quiet folks really enjoy there work, and in no means are they scared to
release there work, but rather punish and don't release, which its necessary to shut alt of people up, can always find them on irc

I'm glad you guys are willing to help out in getting this show on the road. This can only be done by helpful members, especially the ones who read the rules and abide by them.
I think the main issue at hand is that people tend to speak their mind too often, in situations where a moderator should intervene. The best course of action is to report a post or PM a mod (for the Infuse, that's me ) and let them know what's going on.
I'm not on the board 24/7, so I too can miss stuff. But there are ALWAYS other mods who look after the Infuse forums when I can't, so reporting is the BEST thing you can do.
About "rebooting" the community: People are already getting annoyed by the lazy, demanding types, who don't use the search and just post another question which has been asked a million times before. Well, at least if it's in the Q&A forum, it's controlled. So that's our main focus for now: get people to ask their questions there, instead of the development or general forums.

I was concerned that this thread doesn't become a place for blaming other members or finding faults of others.as long as this stands for supporting devs my vote is there.

I wasn't aware that there was a Q&A forum until you mentioned it. I'm using the xda app and have the SAMSUNG Infuse 4g as my favorite, but within that category, the Q&A forum isn't listed. I clicked onto the forum tab and scrolled till I found the Q&A forum. Yeah people can search for it, but I wasn't even aware that forum existed. I just suggest adding the forum into the Infuse 4g category. I think there will be less questions asked in the wrong section if it was listed.

I am guilty of posting topics that I know have been disgust before, the issue that I have and others I'm sure is that the search feature from the app seems to search the entire forum. I think it would be great if a filter feature could be added.

My app shows the Q&A section. But it didn't until I reinstalled. Had to reinstall it after I put CM7 on.

To get the new subforum to show on the app you have to re-add the infuse forum to your favorites.

I think alot of people like myself are new android users. I knew nothing 3 months ago about Android then I got the infuse my first smartphone which seems like its a lot of peoples first android. So I admit I posted questions then went and found the answer when I got no replies. I think people just need to understand that this is very fresh for a lot of people. It was ridiculous on gtg's post but on the other hand people got so angry at othrs that knew very little.

And I think another reason why we see a lot of similar topics being posted especially regarding support is because new users (like myself) feel we need support about our specific situation, even tho we may have already read a similar thrend. Its happened to me were I posted help and either ill get a smart reply ie "its been posted 10 times already" or they may reply with a link. The link will be exactly what I've already read but, the thrend doesn't 100% pertain to my situation so I'm afraid I may mess up even more if I follow those steps (its actually already happened,my first brick) This is why we may see a lot of repeat thrends. I usually will encourage my support giver to pm me but I hardly receive any.

Why not have a separate section for rom support? I realize that sounds goofy but in the rom thread could be development related questions and in support section help and tech support?

Well, xda-developers is for... DEVELOPERS. Although most people on xda are in it for the custom roms and leeching of apps.
I agree there should be some kind of a "noob sandbox" where new users can ask their questions and get answers from more seasoned users/devs. But how do you guys propose we do that?

Galaxy S 4G wiki

Later tonight I will be putting up a Galaxy S 4G wiki page. The goal of this page will be to help explain procedures for flashing, roms, rooting, etc, provide answers to commonly asked questions, as well as troubleshooting tips, how to make logcats, etc. This should help noobs to the phone by providing a one stop resource for all their information and a first place to look before asking a question.
I will provide the link here once it is up. I will be doing a lot of writing for the wiki, but of course information updating is encouraged.
If anyone would be interested in helping moderate the wiki, please contact me via PM.

Ahh! didn't know there was one up. Kind of, but what I want to do would need a lot more than one page. Featuring a full FAQ, flashing guides, descriptions of all the roms, etc. A complete resource. I'll look at that one though and see if I can work with it. A lot of that stuff is out of date.

What is out of date about that Wiki? I already requested this thread be deleted. There is even a stickie the general section about the Wiki.

Yeah, my apologies, don't know how I missed that. I had assumed there wasn't a wiki due to how many threads started asking the same questions over an over again. I guess some people just don't try.

Are you saying you want to add them? I believe the wiki can be updated by anyone. If you're asking for someone else to do it, I'm sure we can throw something together. The questions I have are if you're looking for adb commands, shell commands available on the stock ROM, general Linux commands, what BusyBox adds, or what?

I'm still going to make a wiki as I feel it deserves a full wiki instead of just a page, for navigation, etc. It will be up soon as I'm in the middle of a server move.

Custom Rom Tutorial knowledge base

With the amount of knowledge that is about in the G3 forum, I wanted to try getting a thread going that would be specific to development tutorials so that people like myself, who are interested in getting into development, have a wealth of knowledge and expertise of established devs at their disposal.
So at this stage I would request that devs such as HillBeast, Rubensollie, Marcellusbe, kyrillos, J. Purungrit, Mohanshbhr, The Dark Lest at, Rudolf895, or anyone else with great tutorials, or knowledge to developed tutorials post them here.
I realise it is a lot to ask of devs to post tutorials as they will more than likely already be busy with their own projects. But I feel that a thread like this will open up doors for some talented people who may be able to provide some new and interesting roms/features and maybe even help each other out with bug fixs for existing ports.
Sorry mods if this thread is unneeded.
Please guys, share knowledge so we can all learn and help grow

We already have tutorials and threads and I think making a new one wouldn't be that beneficial.
A wiki, on the other hand....

There are a set of tutorial by Rudolf on Youtube. He had posted in on XDA too. That is the best set of tutorials. And also, certain tools like QtADB, APKMultitool are very useful.

Was more looking to try and keep all tuts within one thread. Easier to read all tuts and collate info that way. Although as suggested a wiki would probably work better

Ok, just search for something good, and when youre done with the main thing, i can write something.

Would gather all info and publish it tomorrow. Will get some sleep

I was contemplating making a wiki myself when I wrote the above post, and look and what has happend since; somebody else made one!
I'll help out with writing stuff once I'm finally able to keep my hands off of my new sgt 10.1.
Just remember, be as modular as possible. That's the whole point of wiki, not repeating work.
ex. make one page for adb and subsections on that page for each command, and when a command is needed in a tut or something just link to the subsection

Well you could pm me what all you want to out on the wiki and i would add it. Why make 2 separate wikis?

So its not gonna be a "true" wiki where users can register and edit it? Why didn't you make one of those?

@ stubborn_d0nkey, when I posted the initial post, this is actually the information that I was suggesting would be made available. Once stop shop for ALL rom building information...

Stickies and guides

I sent a pm to one of our mods asking if we can get the sticky threads cleaned up. By this I mean unsticky some of the ones that are outdated and no longer maintained by current users of this device.
Im basing this on my own ideas and this post by FB.

We have so much stuff stickied in the general sub that is out of date. In the development sub there is a couple threads that are no longer maintained.
My question is do you agree we need some of these threads removed from the list of stickies? Ill have a poll please select agree or disagree. If you want to post a response please do, but lets keep this civil aight?

Eollie, I agree that the stickies are cluttered. We don't even use a lot of them anymore.
I still say that we should move toward using only the wiki for guides to avoid this in the future since we've had a lot of the op's for the stickies leave and then we have oudated stickied threads. With the wiki it doesn't matter who leaves, everyone can still edit the guide and keep it up to date.

I know im new here and all, but I have checked the wiki out and to be honest I think its lacking a little... Like I said in new, and I only say this because in the wiki for ppl that are just rooting there phone the only suggestion is heimdall....well that I disagree with, cuz heimdall isnt the only way...all those one click roots like heimdall and super Didnt work for me either... I did it all through odin...I just think the options should be more that just one... But please understand im not trying to make waves, other than that issue I think it great and very informative...
I also would like to say that the devs and and a lot of members here are a great help here and I know im not alone when I say thank you.

Like I said in new, and I only say this because in the wiki for ppl that are just rooting there phone the only suggestion is heimdall....well that I disagree with, cuz heimdall isnt the only way...all those one click roots like heimdall and super Didnt work for me either... I did it all through odin...I just think the options should be more that just one... But please understand im not trying to make waves, other than that issue I think it great and very informative...
I also would like to say that the devs and and a lot of members here are a great help here and I know im not alone when I say thank you.

Looks like it's time for YOU to edit the wiki and add a guide that works for you.

I have thought about making a update guide like the bible thread but every time I start I have never finished. Im not fond of the wiki for some of the reasons twisted spoke about, however it can be useful.
Is there a person that is notified when edits are made? So we can make sure the proper info is put on it? Ive never paid enough attention to that aspect.

There's a history option in the wiki that lets you view the latest edits, and see what exactly go changed. (It's up top in the navigation)
The thing is that the lack of information can be addressed by adding it. Twisted said there were no Odin guides, well we can add them. There's no real reason why we shouldn't be using it. I know everyone wants to start their thread with their guide on how to do things their way, but there has to be an accepted method of doing things. I've written up a few of the guides on the Wiki but then someone else comes along and improves it with a better method that is more up to date. That's how it should be, you don't have to go to MY thread to try and edit it or try to get me to update it. You can just go in and do it yourself.

Fb... I really didnt mean to cause wave bro, but to be honest I dont know which links I used to root my phone... I look tomorrow at my downloads and see which ones I used, but I do know that I tried alot of different ways so it might take me a minute to find it all... But like I said it was informative and im not taking way from the concept of it cuz I think it would be easier for new ppl trying to root there phone... There is just a lot of info out there that isnt in the wiki...

You're completely missing the point.
Let me make it easier.
If info is not in wiki, put info in wiki.

I agree about the cleanup but Who is to stop the trolls from updating the wiki with bad info I mean someone could of been offended by another user and think I will change the wiki and put harmful material or instructions just to mess up People phones. There should be Some checks and balance of the info that has been updated

No one can stop another user/troll from putting bad, offensive, or just plan misinformation out there. The maintenance of the wiki is a community effort. Thus we are all responsible for updating it and cleaning it up.
I do like the idea of checks and balances, though. What we need for that effort are maintainers. On top of the community making updates we could have a few people that collaborate to help keep the wiki clean, up to date, etc. The trick would be getting volunteers for Team Wiki (wicked? Wikid! lol) that can put the time and effort into the moderation of the wiki.

Nvm, just checked the wiki and it has either been updated or i was blind before, cuz everything i used is in the wiki...

. I'm glad you see that. If someone updates it and starts screwing with the wiki a moderator can always step in. It's basically like the forums, we can't stop you from posting, but once you've posted something that you shouldn't have, we can remove it. We can do the same on the wiki, it keeps track of the edit history, we can always revert to a good version.

Thanks FB that was what I was wanting to know. I have the same reservations as anonymous and Stephen. Ive seen wikipedia edited and things slipped until somebody caught it.
Ive spoke with TRusselo and if we can come up with a list of the threads that need to be cleaned and unstuck he is willing to look into is. However since he doesnt own the phone he did not want to jump in unstickying threads willy nilly. I had planned on posting earlier today but I spent a good part of my day fixing bicycles so I can take my kiddo bike riding.
Ill be out most of tomorrow but Ill try to post my list sometime and if any of you want to also suggest it would be great. My thinking is we can always link to the threads via the wiki and maybe create a new version of the bible thread and the FAQ thread Mr. Clown created.
If you want to make suggestions please list which sub the thread is in and the thread name no need to link it. The final list will have links when I submit it to TRusselo.

Well I can say once this idea is completed it will be a lot more user friendly...

All of the above is open for suggestions or even tell me certain threads need to stay as stickies. Im just looking to trim the sticky list down.
I was also thinking each sub could have a thread that has links to the wiki for things. That way even if the person that creates it leaves and never comes back the wiki links will be the same. Then the threads can be linked on the wiki and if a thread is out dated it can be removed from the wiki.

As far as recreating the bible thread, we can easily do that in the wiki. The roms portion is pretty much set except for roms that haven't been released yet.
The dev stickies are definitely the ones we should get rid of. right now we have 6 stickied threads. They take up a lot of room before getting to the latest content from dev threads.

I agree with creating a bible in the wiki, I was suggesting linking to it in a sticky. I tend to have a hard time expressing my thoughts in few words. I mean you have read some of my posts .

Anybody have any objections to the lists I have above?
