36,000 Users and No Help, WTF? - General Questions and Answers

Exactly as stated above, the biggest droid forum on the net and no response with 36,000 active users online...rediculious

Do you think all 36,000 of us have your same device? Did you do a search? Contact customer support? Restore back to stock to see if its the device or the rom?
Nope. You didnt do any of those things.
Stupid topics warrant stupid responses.

No offense, but just because you post a question regarding your device doesn't mean that you will get a response immediately. Many of the users of this site are devs and are working on trying to make an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM to work 100%. You don't need to rely on everybody else to answer your question and some research may need to be done on your own.

the research was done, i have been a member of this forum since 2010, and it took me two years to finally have a question, so pretty much i went 2 years without any help, so i guess this time i must really be stumped, hence why i turn here. i went to other forums and there anwser was "go to xda" like seriously wtf

Dang bro, all i could say now is to go and bump the threads back to the top, or delete them and try again.

worst mistake to get captivate :( no help here

i ordered captivate knowing there will be nice people to support in this forum but there is none. i posted thread 2 times and both times its deleted without even informing me. i offer people free ps3 games and bluetooth headset still nobody wants to help here with lag fix and downloading rom? worst experience ever.
Sorry..... What?? No help = not asking the right question. You have over 400 posts and have gotten no help?!? weird......
Why would you offer free stuff for help? That just makes you seem like a spammer.
Quit being an idiot, and help yourself.
Captivate, XDA Premium, Cyanogenmod
Wow. This place is self service. Have you tried doing any searches or are you just waiting for someone to help you? Threads rarely get deleted. I'm guessing from your original post that you aren't very good at communicating.
im new here on captivate. do u guys really think i would understand all that rom stuff and kies and stuff i dont even know what they are. i dont even know how to root
If you need help with Captivate related stuff, I can help you out. Shoot me a PM.
At the others, if you don't have anything constructive to say, then better to keep quiet and report the thread.

Great words Miami_Son...Lol, it sounds like he's waiting for a personal invite to information that is abundantly available in this forum. 2 months ago I had no idea how to do anything with my Cappy beside make a phone call and now I'm changing ROM's and themes more often than I change my drawers.
Bit of advice there the_ahmadzais, get a clue and quit waiting for someone to ask you if you need help. Read, read, read, read, all the information you need is all here with the click of you mouse. :/

I'm closing it because of all this nonsense talk. I'll repeat what I said above, if you want to be stupid and ridicule the OP rather then lending a hand, then you're better off not posting.
@ the_ahmadzais, probably better off posting in the Q&A.

Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App
You have to have a pretty-much rock-stock ROM for this update to work. You could just install attn1's version of the stock ROM with this update already applied, then properly rooted and packaged for installation:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042
After installing, the update screen will show that you are up to date.

That is how flash attn1 rom. I think you might have misunderstood. He meant that you could go back to stock stock and apply it. Because if your rooted it will fail to install OR. Apply attn1 rom.

Attn1's ROM is flashed in hboot because it includes a radio. It is the ota update your phone is trying to get, but with root. He also has one in that same thread with sideloading enabled.

i really dont get why it bothers some people so much, they respond to threads saying use the search button, people ask it alot. U dont have to respond to the post to begin with, alot of people do though, and with the same effort used to say use the search button, u could have just as easily answered the question.
Best part is if u dont want to answer it because you think they were to lazy to search it gets buried pretty quick.

its probably because to newer users, its a little intimidating to go thru many posts and threads, and they also know some info could be outdated. Maybe on the site, there should be an official, updated "how to" glossary or wiki.

I'll tell you why....
Because the question was already answered for one thing.
It's also forum rules, and I've seen it mentioned by Mods a million times.
Community moderation...I let people know in the hopes of breaking a habit before it starts: posting a new thread for every single question that crosses their mind, and, eventually, expect to be given answers to everything, getting even more reluctant to do the "work" of finding answers and learning about their phones on their own.
Next thing you know, we're up to our necks in duplicate posts. Then, NOBODY will want to answer ANYTHING, because they have to wade through 4 tons of duplicate crap, and it ain't worth it.
How hard is it to Google "inspire OTA update root" ?

As to the last question: speaking for myself, I am tempted to just ask question, not because I can't effin search, but some of my questions, one has to weed through all manner of material on multiple threads, some pertinent, some not, since February to ascertain "the" answer. This is all well and good and maybe an exercise in disciple, like back in school or something, but maybe some of us just get impatient in an effort to save time. That said, I am fully on board with the forum rules, because da rules are da rules, and this is where one has to come for this sort of stuff :-D.

Oh I agree. Everyone has questions, and everyone has opinions. There are often times wrong/incomplete answers to things, and both yes and no to the same question.
It's not necessarily easy to parse through and distill all of this stuff. But it can be done. I often times run across answers that go both ways, and that can be unsettling, especially if it involves potentially bricking a device if you get it wrong.
It's just a question of analysis, and I concede some people are more comfortable doing it than others. I guess I never expected to be handed all of the answers to basic questions.
I've always preferred searching over posting in asking a question, as it usually always provides the answer *quicker* than waiting for someone to post back an answer to the question.
Not to mention, if it turns out it was a much easier answer to find than first apparent, or that it was one's own oversight responsible for a problem that motivated the question, one can bypass getting antagonized by jerks like me.

Yes this. Exactly. 10 words.
Scott, why must you pretend to be GOD in these forums which you clearly aren't....if the guy wants to ask, let him ask...the search feature in this forum sucks anyways, so i would of done the same exact thing. don't like reading something that is redundant, then go grab the book War and Peace and entertain yourself. I am sure that by the time you are done with it, all items here would be OUTDATED and you will have no choice but to ask questions yourself, which is where i would answer you back with this:
"i really dont get why it bothers some people so much, they respond to threads saying use the search button, people ask it alot. I'm not pretending anything. Searching before posting is forum rules, often cited by mods. I happen to feel it's important enough to remind people, and I'm not the only one. It's called community moderation.
No, a lot of stuff does NOT get outdated. Some do, like radio flashing and not needing eng s-off, but others don't, or haven't yet and don't look like they're going to.
For example, rooting remains the same basic process as when it started. One of two methods are available, and likely there won't be any new ground-breaking discoveries, at least for a while. Maybe it will change in the future, but it hasn't yet.
Another example... Until someone makes ATT want to push their otas to rooted devices, the process by which to update one's rooted phone with those OTA updates will remain the same. Etc....
And Google works just fine, better than the built-in search function of many sites.
Saying "I can't search because search sux" is a cop-out, plain and simple.

Umm, no. At least not on the full site. If you look right above the forum frames (up, up a little more, no down, yeah, there, on the right) you'll see the search you should be using. It searches recursively from wherever you are. Forum home? Searches the whole board. Inspire home? Searches the whole Inspire board. Inspire Dev? Yep, just the dev section. It goes clear down to searching within a thread. Hardly sucky.
I have been rooted for about a month now and have flashed several custom roms but am now back at the stock rooted rom desiring the latest at&t ota update. I read earlier in this thread that because I'm already rooted the update won't install. My question is can I just flash the attn1 rom even though I rooted my device using bubby's root method?

It should work fine. All attn1's ROM needs is s-off. Bubby's give you that.
I'm not positive but I think att1 updated rooted stock rom w/sideloading is in the form of pd98img.zip file which u need to put on on your SD card but not in a folder. Then turn off fastboot in settings, power off your phone, then while holding down the vol down button push your power button. The phone should boot into hboot where it will search for the pd98img for a few seconds then ask you to update. Once it's done you can reboot & delete the file off your SD card cause it's around 300 or so mb. Once your all done with that you also might want to get the matching ril file for the new radio that's in the update which you can flash in cwr.

Why does everybody get annoyed when a regular person just wants to know whats wrong out of curiosity? I don't want any ROM or anything I just wanted a technical answer. is the problem the source code being unreleased? will the company ever release it?
I wish I could help, I would really love to. Its like a dream or long term goal to be a dev, study programming languages etc... but that requires lots of time and I'm just waiting a bit as i'm not sure where to start.
I am sorry for any misunderstanding as I know Devs already have rough days and nights with developing and improving. I wasn't "Demanding" or "pushing" as i'm not that person. I am just seeking knowledge, and if the Q&A section isn't the right place to search for Knowledge then I don't know where is.
The problem isn't with you so much as it is with the million dollar question that's been asked and answered a million times....its the question all devs cringe over when they see it repeated time n time again.
Put yourself in their shoes for a minute.....they put out as much as they can with what they can and people keep popping up this same question like they just aren't happy with what they are getting
To answer your question, and anybody else that wants to ask,
It is being worked on. We cannot get ICS to boot due to coding and kernel issues. I semi successfully ported an ICS ROM, but due to all the mods and changes, it felt empty. So we went back to the drawing board and started over. Since we don't have source code, it makes things much more difficult. Be patient. And for the record, the first place to search for knowledge is Google. Fb is right though. We do need more help. The more people we have working on this, the better our chances are. Learn how to compile kernel and ROM from source. Learn scripting. And learn how to Google...

I do understand what you mean, and I already put myself in the dev's shoes and I really admire their work, all of it. But I went through all the threads regarding ICS, and sadly their aim is to push , demand and request stuff from devs as if devs don't have enough on their minds already, and that is really annoying and disrespectful. But not all people are like that. I don't have any requests( I have a Nexus S with ICS, SGS 4g CM7.2) I am just seeking knowledge.
I am really grateful for what each and every DEV offers as it is from their personal and free time. Sorry for any misunderstanding

What Thomas posted is true but the main reason we dont have a working ICS port is this statement above.
The op makes a good point, this is the Q&A section. Even tho there are many threads asking this same question most of them have ended up in bashing with nerf bats or a mod locking because of insults. Ive read the other threads, but most people will stop reading when the conversation turns sour. You might actually read the other posts but your mind shuts it down. So a informative post will slip in and you wont catch it.
The biggest problem with threads that ask this question is assumptions. When people stop assuming and start to understand the person asking the question things get resolved.

[Q] OTA out of nowhere. Can't install it - what's going on?

Today (10/27) I got notified of an OTA on my Skyrocket, and I haven't heard anything about one. I am running 4.0.4, rooted, with CWMR v5.5.0.4.
I did a nandroid backup, backed up all my apps with TB, and set SuperSU to survival mode. Then I let the OTA download, it installed and then it rebooted - into recovery. I continued the reboot from CWMR and when it finished the boot, the OTA said it was interrupted and couldn't finish. I cannot find a zip file on the phone anywhere to manually flash.
Tried this twice with the same result. What is going on? Where did this OTA come from anyway? What should I do? I think rebooting into recovery is interrupting the process somehow, but I am at a loss as to what to do now.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

So this post could've been left at one reply telling the guy that he can't install and should've looked in general. I'm not really lazy, I just don't have all day to hang out on a forum like some other people. I told you that I did a quick search and when I couldn't find an answer, I asked a question - in the Q&A section.
Sorry I'm not an expert in everything and ruined your day by asking a question.

In his defense I was able to find an answer to your question on Google fairly quickly, but then again I have no clue what you Googled.
Still, the first reply gave an answer to your question and crazy came in well after that was posted. He didn't have to, yet he went out of his way to make you feel like crap.

OTA Update can not be Done on Rooted phone. Not worth going back to stock for this Little Update. Wait for Jelly Bean....
He didn't make me feel like crap - complete strangers do not do that for me. It's just annoying because posts like that can drive people away.
However, I did feel bad after I realized that there were several other threads on the same topic. I usually make an effort to avoid duplicate posts, but in this case I was in something of a hurry. In any event, I found my answer - I'm not taking the update, it's not worth the effort to go back to stock recovery.
Thanks!

I'm not really lazy, I just don't have all day to hang out on a forum like some other people. I told you that I did a quick search and when I couldn't find an answer, I asked a question - in the Q&A section.
Sorry I'm not an expert in everything and ruined your day by asking a question.
You could have just ignored my post, but I guess you needed to prove how superior you are. I'd looked at some of your posts and a lot are like the one above - no help, lots of ego.
Thanks for the no help. The whole point of this forum is share information and help each other out. Guess you missed that stickie.

Wrong, this forum is for developers not lazy users who can't operate Google efficiently.
Carry on and have a nice day

It may have started that way years ago, but you should look around. There's lots of plain simple regular users here now, looking for answers.
Peace

There's a good amount of normal people on here. If the site was how you describe it they shouldn't let anyone who isn't a developer join. "U NO MAKE ROMS OR KERNELS U NO WORTHY OF FORUM" is basically what's spewing from your mouth. Have whoever's in charge kick every single member off of the site if they're not a dev since that's the attitude you wanna have.
Otherwise, stop being such a damn bully and stop giving the site a bad rep. He made a mistake and got his answer. You clicked the thread, saw the answer and still decided to pummel him. That's called "being an asshole".

Very cool story. However, the forum is called xda developers and this is a place for developers. Read the rules and ask the moderators what this place is about, and they will tell you the same thing. Also, you have a potty mouth.

The basis of my post was that not everyone on here is a dev, regardless of if the site is called xda developers. Don't throw that up as an excuse to be a jerk because he's not the only non-developer in this forum or on the site.
And stuff like this makes me angry. Like, I could understand if you gave him an answer and then laid into him, but you just flamed him. My apology for swearing.
You wanna talk rules? Try reading section 2.5 under forum & marketplace rules.

I don't like lazy people. This generation is the laziest, most pathetic I've ever seen. You can either make an effort to change it or make it worse. Your choice, man.

That I can get behind. But there's also nothing wrong with a friendly reminder of the rules on researching first. Emphasis on friendly.

Go away, grow up and stop trolling :banghead:
Seriously? If you are serious then search first.

@zelendel is a Moderator on the forum and is far more tolerant than I am. I said that if you were serious you should search. The first rul of XDA (read them if you haven;t done so before) is to "Search before asking anything". This question has been asked many times, sometime by noobs, sometimes by trolls, so the answer and the reasons why not are on XDA and Google in many, many places already - starting a new thread to ask the same thing is contrary to the rules of XDA and, to be honest, is just ignorant and lazy as well.
While Simon is correct about searching. I will break it down the best I can. The device is just not compatable with android. All the bootloaders are locked down tighter then fort knox. The kindle that you mentioned is based off of linux like android is. The iphone will never be allowed to run anything other then apples software.

Oh wow! So you took all that time to post two responds and then went ham on me calling me all kinds of things and still didn't even answer the question? And you are calling ME ignorant? who are you, the owner of the xda developers website or something? You can't just judge a book from its cover, homie! Do you know how long I have been a "member"? Do you know if I know everything about this website or not? Do you think I would have asked if I had known the answer? I have been an Iphone owner for several years and I have just switched to the android community and I am still exploring it which means I am new. And I actually love it, but people like yourself make it a little unpleasant. Man, this is ridiculous. I am being insulted for just a questione. Do you know what the word "manners" mean, or does that not exist in your country? Thank you for this and I will make sure to delete this thread as soon as I figure out how. Have a pleasent day.

It is ok, man. I take my question back. I won't be asking any questions on here anymore just not to "insult" some peoples' intellegence like this dude. But thank you so much, though.

You are more then welcome to ask question, but please understand that this is a developers site. Alot of the questions most new users have already have been asked a few hundred times. So searching first will most likely save you time and frustration. So of the people here are a bit short but that is due to people thinking we are a support site. This is the furtherest from the truth. So my advice would be to search and read. Things will come to you in time. You will also notice how the same questions are asked over and over again. After some time this will start to annoy you as well when you are looking for info and you have to read over hundreds of posts of the same question.
I will close this for you as you can not close or delete any threads. Even ones you make.
