[Q] LG Thrill 4G / HTC Sensation / Motorola Photon 4G / Motorola Atrix 4G - General Questions and Answers

I have a dilemma between this 4 cellular, I can get them all at almost the same price so its dosn't matter.
What do you recommand?
I want a strong one that would run the latest games, but also a one that do its job as a phone!
Also the XDA community support is important (ROMS, etc)
Thanks!

I love my Photon. Rooted but with locked boot loader not many rom options.

htc hands down
hello ok here it is most of the time it just a prefrence amongst the user you will find more support for google brand phones and htc phones more so than the rest quite simply google devices always get latest software anyway and htc has so many android phones that there are alot of developers for there phones i will tell you as i own a lg g2x that if it was not for very good developers that work very hard my phone would suck as lg does not have good support on there end.
so some things to consider
1. number of roms for device
2. number of developers working with device
3. if htc phone does alpharev 1.8 or alpharev x support it (if you want s-off)
4. along with the roms are there good kernals for it (faux123) ( morific trinity)
(please note kernal only needed if you wanna oc/uv
5.what you will be happy with and is user friendly to you
but out of those phones listed no to the lg (poor lg support) motorola no (very slow to get updated if any) i would honestly say the htc sensation if you dont like that buy a google branded phone
hey if it helps please hit thanks or buy me a pepsi

Out of the four, the LG Thrill is most likely to get a stable CM9 earliest, simply because it's a TI OMAP chipset (same as the Galaxy Nexus), and TI is awesome with releasing source/drivers/etc. apparently. The only thing is that 3D probably won't be implemented too soon after CM9 comes to the device. The Photon and Atrix on the other hand will be one of the last to get it simply because of the nVidia chipset, and nVidia apparently doesn't release much for developers.

Atrix
I had the Motorla Atrix when I was going through AT&T. I absolutely loved that phone. I changed jobs, and had to switch carriers. I have the Motorola Photon, and I'm slightly annoyed with it.
I started doing some research today to determine if I should root the Photon or wait for ICS. Hmmmm, Q3 for the ICS. So, I decided to root, and go with a ROM that doesn't have all of the bloated Sprint software, only to be reminded that the boot loader on the Motorola phones are locked, and ROM development is slim to none, or so I'm finding.
Motorola makes a pretty damn good phone, IMHO, but to lock things down so tightly is baaaaaad. I went with Android phones, because I love Linux and open source. Motorola is like the Microsoft or Apple of Cell phones.
If you're planning to root, stay away from Motorola phones.

No Lg Thril
Do not get the LG Thrill. It was the worst phone I have ever had. It was awful. I had it for 3 months and had to switch because it was that bad.

Don't think these other companies were ready...

Samsung... LG. They wanted to enter the superphone battle but really had no idea of what they were getting themselves into. The time is over where you can just release a phone and not update it expecting it to just continue to sell.
HTC has been dealing with Android for awhile and definitely understands this concept. Many of their phones are receiving Gingerbread while many others have had announcements about updates. HTC stated a phone wasn't going to be updated then a day later had a change of heart. Days later an announcement was made with details of the update.
Communication and promptness is what is going to make or break these companies. Samsung had a big success with the Galaxy S but no one can deny they failed with updating the device once issues arose.
LG definitely wasn't ready to have the "world's first dual-core" smartphone when they didn't even have a competent engineering team to put out good software. And now that same software team is taking forever to get it right.
Were we too naive trusting LG with a phone of this stature?

samsung was ready. I mean look at the sgs2 now. Even with not updating like you said they had mad success. Even those who said never again still want the samsung. It also is the least buggiest device on paper out there looking at the forums.
LG yes. they came in like DEEERRRP, but Samsung knew what they were doing. ****, sgs 4g lmaoooo. They may not be cool how they do it, but they know what there doing and make a good product or people wouldnt be wanting a sgs2 so bad.
Only issue they had was gps, and yes poor updates but thats just them saving money and time and sending it out on a whole new device thats the same as the last with the update. lol
LG did it right with the hardware but screwed up the software. It happens. Google has yet to work with LG, which I think is next in line.
Samsung, HTC, Motorola have all had turns with google and learning the ins and outs.
I think the next Nexus phone will be LG... that will bring them up to speed like the rest.

I've never had a Samsung Android phone before so I can't speak to the past. But the SGS2 has already received three ROM updates and four camera firmware updates in six weeks. 2.3.4 is expected by the end of the month to address an issue with the Android suspend process chewing up battery. It's for non-branded phones though and once the U.S. carriers get involved all bets are off no matter who manufactured the phone.
G2x was rushed out, to get the "first" tag.... It should have went out with 2.3. Saying that LG can not support the phone is way way way too early. IMO they are trying to make 2.3 release be a complete package, as bug free as reasonably necesssary and possible. Tons of updates are equal to one really solid release, some may prefer lots of updates, while most want a solid release, without the need of tick tacking.
LG is essentially relying on pure Android.....if the G2x is not ready for primetime, then Android itself is not.
Incorrect. LG's abomination is not pure Android. It's been proven that they heavily modified the build and just made it LOOK like stock. So again, it falls on the shoulders of LG to get it right.

Who rushed them?
And how did that work out for them?
Please do not put Samsung in the same league as LG. One year ago I would have said, yea sure, go ahead but not now. They just made the worlds most powerful Android device ever made and there getting involved with the DEV community. They have already released 3 updates for the SGSII which is 3 more than LG issued for the G2X. The SGSII has the least amount of bugs out of the new dual core phones being released.
Samsung just joined HTC at the top. LG just replaced Samsung of the Behold II days.
I might be wrong but why did they come out with naked 2.2 froyo?? im guessing cause they wanted to release the phone as soon as possible because if LG could come out with a dual core phone im sure LG knew that other competitors will be coming out with one soon. Also look at them right now they handed out couple of G2X w/ GB to tmobile employees for testing, why couldn't they do that earlier. I guess they figure "hey lets release the phone w/ 2.2 Froyo and figured it would be "safe"". But i guess that was a big mistake.
As far as im concern my phone works perfectly
in my opinion, yeah LG brought out an unstable phone
but then with the developers roms and kernel, my g2x is the fastest and smoothest phone i've ever experienced with.
im not saying that LG was perfect, but its because of them & developers that i have a phone that rapes any other phone on the market

The Atrix is dual-core on Froyo with the same Tegra SoC and hasn't experienced the issues the G2X has so you can't blame Froyo. The Sensation and SGS2 are dual-core on Gingerbread and don't have similar issues either which would mean dual-core phones can work successfully with any newer Android version. So, anecdotally, all fingers point to LG's software and/or hardware decisions.
The whole reason I bought this phone was because it was a very powerful, stock android phone. It had all the right hardware. I knew that because it was in the G series it woiuld recieve crazy dev support and I was sold when I heard cyannogen would be making a rom for it. Its unlocked and flash happy. Honestly I didnt care then and dont care now what the phone was like when it was released. I bought this to tinker and tinkering I am doing lots of. If I wanted a locked down phone with a laggy UI i would have gone with an HTC or motorola phone. At the time i had no clue HTC would unlock the bootloader but has that even happened yet?
If htc was so prepared they would of unlocked the bootloader, which they didn't.

If anything, it would make more sense to think that HTC is incapable of producing solid tech. And quite honestly, it shows. The G1 was a horrid pieces of hardware [note I said HARDWARE, not software] that only stood out because it was the first Android device. The MyTouch was and is slow and clunky even after official upgrades and custom ROMS , where as the Cliq XT [which at one point was WORST PHONE EVAR!~!! according to most android fanboys] is absolutely blazing on its CM7 port considering its a 600mhz processor. And don't get me started about all of HTC's subpar Winmo phones that plagued T-Mobile for a long time [probably why smartphones didn't take off for a while til the iPhone and Blackberry]
On the other hand, LG is more than capable of producing a high end piece of mobile electronic. Considering they have a long history of computer hardware, also applicances and commercial technology. If you think a SoC based Android phone is complicated, please take a look at service manuals for a modern washer or a 3D HDTV. LG has the assembly lines, the manpower, and the R/D to develop a top class mobile device. And the G2X is easily the best designed phone on the market. I'm sorry so many people have had so many issues, but a fully working G2X is miles ahead of anything offered by HTC or Samsung.
Some of you act as if LG has never made mobile phones, yet they've made some of the best and some of the most innovative devices before the smartphone craze took off.

But i can tell you first hand.
this rom is the same rom pretty much as the overseas version which has the lg skin on it. they changed the png files to be stock android and removed the settings additions.
all the hooks and java are in the framework files at least the ones i looked at. have tons of stuff that is not froyo 2.2.2 source.
this explains why both phones have similair problems.
themes cause tons of bootlopps and freezes and reboots if not done correctly. and thats probably the cause of the reboots. since this is a themed rom.
with rommers they put out an update to fix a problem. the companies seem to always try to fix everything before releasing than on top of that they are bringing a whole new os and froyo and GB are quite a bit different. and with tmobile i imagine they told them to get a working gingerbread rom on it and they would buy the phones again.
Hope this helps some.
i think your right

Worked great, the got a lot of press for being the first dual core, which is why they rushed.
The sales have been so strong that they ran out of the phones. Negative press is pretty much on this site and similar, which probably reaches about 5% max of the buyers.
They released with 2.2 which gives most a strong belief that 2.3 will solve a ton of issues whether or not I have experienced them.
The G2x will always be part of the against other phones, as part of the benchmarks, where as the Sensation will drop off.
So did it work, I think so.
Looking forward to 2.3....if it introduces problems I will be very upset.

Replacing Droid 2, need advice

Hello everyone.
With my D2 already having a failed power button (replacement should be here tomorrow), and with Motorola historically being very quiet regarding any updates, support, lousy updates etc as of late (though I do own a Xoom which I love), I have an early upgrade next month and thinking of taking it.
Here are some things to consider:
- I have Verizon Wireless
- Upgrade due on 7/28
- Have traditionally had moto handsets, and have the Droid 2 now
- Prefer the qwerty keyboard but can part with it for a soft one
- Larger screens are nice
- Need plenty of oomph and upgradeability (e.g. my phone had the 8gb internal storage for plenty of future proof upgrades...well in theory anyways)
- A plus if custom roms available
I would also like to start with a gingerbread phone at this point. Froyo was great but the D2 stock rom is total crap and Liberty was its only saving grace for a long time.
So, what is it that people prefer/suggest?
tbh, the dev community is probably the most active with the droid incredible, and one can be purchased online for under $200, saving your upgrade for a future device.
IF you want a new phone, the Thunderbolt has a wonderful dev community.
problem button volum on htc desire hd
The inc is a great phone with awesome support (CM7, MIUI, sense 3.0, etc) but it is getting a little outdated. Thunderbolt has decent dev support but I think the specs of it will pale in comparison to the dual core phones coming out this summer. THE android phone currently is the galaxy s2, which will be coming to Verizon, hopefully sooner rather than later. Droid bionic will likely be here before too long, as well as the Droid 3. Unfortunately, with moto locking their phones down, you're at their mercy for updates and have limited options when it comes to roms. It all depends on what you want in a phone. I currently have an incredible and would highly recommend it, but I'd look into the phones that will be coming out this summer to see if they might better suit your wants/needs.
Incredible 2!!!
Sent from my Motorola Defy using the XDA App
If you've seen the specs for the D3...what a disappointement.
Not much more than an OC'ed D2.
My thing about Moto is the sheer lack of communication to the customer, it really sucks when everyone is getting an update and you are totally left in the dark till it magically appears on your phone.
I'm about to pick up my replacement D2 tonight..will be interesting to see if its a D2 or if it will be a D2G...
IMO, anything by HTC at this point if you want good dev support. They're planning on providing unlocked bootloaders to all their phones (possibly trying to retroactively unlock their bootloaders as well), and even going to release their Sense SDK sometime in the future.
The Droid 3 is a big upgrade with the qHD screen, OMAP4, and front facing camera. Also OMAP4 is the first processor certified for Netflix HD. The only issue will be the bootloader. With the Atrix now open, here's hoping the Droid 3 and/or the Bionic will be opened (either right away for shortly after launch).

which ten are the best android phones responsible for android's growth
for the video
check this link out

I'd say the evo 4G was responsible along with the galaxy
S line of phones. The nexus one was huge I think.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
OG Droid, all the way. Completely changed the mobile landscape and put Android on the map.
The G1 and the N1, followed by the Droid...
The N1 is still the best one ever made.
The nexus 1 in USA and Desire in Europe
In terms of influence and popularity/innovation etc., I'd say the list is more like 1. G1(just b/c its the first Android), 2. OG Droid(First Android phone that blew up, ridiculous marketing etc), 3. HTC EVO (easily the iPhone of Androids) 4. Nexus 1 5. SGS/II 6. Droid X, 7. Droid Inc. 8. Moto Atrix 9-10, idk? Personally I'd put the HTC Aria up there for having such a clean, small design. Didn't sell huge but it did decent for an AT&T phone.
Idk, I think the youtube list is way off. For example, I don't know too many people who even heard of the LG Optimus X2. The Optimus V is a much bigger step for Android IMO ($130 prepaid, easily one of the best-selling Virgin Mobile phones).
cool. i would rank the samsung nexus s on this list
first curved screen, first nfc device.
well for me.. it has to be the galaxy s , (now on s2)
I was always a Nokia man until i bought a archos 5, 2 years ago and was very impressed, which led to the android change.
Wouldn't change back and would even go as far to say as i would be lost with out all the features we now all take for granted.
Why dint xperia x10 get there???...it had 1ghz when samsungs and htcs were still in 800mhz...

if the HD2 are valid. I say HTC HD2.
he really helped development of android.
many things have been developed on HD2....

Since the question is which 10 best are responsible for putting Android on the map and not best overall here goes...
10. Your winmo phone - yes, I grouped them up but I think the Android ports is what really got the community moving from winmo->android...people just had to have a taste before they were willing to commit..
9. iphone - since theoretically iphone can run android I can count it as an Android phone ...Android was gonna grow iphone or not, that is obvious..all those people saying iphone is responsible for Android being what it is today is nto really true..it had its influence but end of the day thats very small..what they did have is getting average consumers interested in smartphones and touchphones to begin with.
8. Nexus S - Due to media's scaring people with fragmentation it arose a lot of interest among people due to it being "Google Experience" which is suppose to rival the pure "iphone experience"
7. HTC Hero - probably the first Android phone anyone heard any mention of...if they heard of it..
6. Samsung Intercept/Moment/Original Galaxy/w\w other names it has - Yes, crazy I know..this is a low end phone and is complete junk..but it made itself popular due to it being low budget and available in all markets..its junk but it put android on the map...whether it be in a good way or bad way is another story..
5. Droid X - Like the Evo it was a big competitor and had a lot of backing from the Droid camp.
4. HTC Evo 4G - This one is a big one mostly in the developer community. It also saw a lot of advertisement from Sprint which helped put it on the map as an alternative to the iphone. Unfortunately lack of stock ultimitely turned a lot of people down for months but there is no denying that average people know this phone by name in the US.
3. HTC Desire - This phone is very popular in the international community. I don't know the exact details but I know its big...its effectively the HTC incredible which did wonders and its similar to nexus one.
2. Samsung Galaxy S - The key to this one was samsung's ability to get the phone on so many carriers and so many markets..while each variant may not have performed well on itself it did wonders overall. Not to mention while TouchWiz UI is not very popular among many in development, to the average consumer it made things a lot simpler.
1. Motorola Droid - With Verizon's $100m advertising campaign, android was put on the map right there
Now..why is the Nexus One not there or the G1? well frankly they are both good phones but they did not put Android on the map...Nexus One was popular among the Android community..but outside no one heard of it..it was a developer phone with no supply chain...but still is an awesome phone...the G1 can probably be #11 but Android announcement wasn't even known by average people and most of the tech community was "thats nice"..again its a good phone responsible for alot but it didn't carry the weight the above 10 did...
Of course htc HD2
One of the most developed device and has since early days a big and powerful community behind it
SwiftKeyed from my HTC HD2 via XDA PREMIUM APP
Zte blade, for £70 it needs a mention.

Samsung Galaxsy II, new but great, legendes will remain legends but this phone have very good future, i think by moding and developing will suprass any android phone.... Respect to G1 and N1, dislike HTC (because of unreall price here in Serbia)
Cheers!
The best "phone" at this time IMHO is.. the iphone4
I don't understand why there is no android phone with the same physical specs - the same width/height/depth/weight and the same POWER specs (cpu/mem/features) - but with an android OS.
Everyone is trying to make a "huge-phone", instead of a classic portable phone.
That is really a shame.
I would say,
G1 (obvious reasons)
2. Nexus S (one of the best stock android phone)
3. Samsung Galaxy S2 (latest and the best)
Also, in case anyone else didn't notice, the video link the OP posted, is now removed from youtube.
Same usual suspects. Droid because it was the one that got Android noticed. galaxy s because it sold over 10 million, and the nexus series because those were google phones
What's a signature?

Once iOS catches android in terms of user interface, it probably will need to include a dual core processor.
Same goes for WP7, once it catches android in terms of features.
There's always a catch, you get some, you lose some.

[Q] Should I buy a Nexus S?

Hi there. I am an LG P500 user. This phone is kinda normal, here are the specs:
MSM7227 Processor 600MHz
512MB of RAM
3.0 MP Camera
320x480 MDPI Screen resolution
Stock Froyo, can be updated to 2.3.3 official Gingerbread or unofficial CM7 (2.3.7)
No support for internal memory card
Bluetooth 2.1
Phone may seem crappy, but just take a look at our LG P500 forums - http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=839.
We have everything: TeamWin Recovery, official ClockworkMod,Unofficial CyanogenMod 7 port which is fully working, tons of custom ROMs (even based on CM7 source),Official 2.3.3 update, great themed ROMs and yes, even franco.Kernel.
But I want some more. So,@ Media World italian store nexus one is now 270€,so I've chosen that(for MIUI,Oxygen,CM7,AOSP etc. official support),probably, not sure. My stupid noob question is:
Samsung Galaxy Nexus is being released,so it will be leaving Nexus S back,am I right? It didn't happen for Nexus One,but I read somewhere that Google after 4.0 won't release official updates no more for it. Will this also happen with Nexus S? Just want to be sure .
I'm not sure if I understand your question. Are you asking if the original Nexus will continue to be supported by Google, or if the GNex will be superior to the NS?

The nexus s will most definitely get an update. Google has stated that it will release AOSP soon after it release the galaxy nexus.
If you would rather not spend a few hundred euros more for a phone, the nexus s a great alternative, even if its a little out dated.

if your going to buy the phone off contract, Id say do it while our phone doesnt have thousands of roms we have it were it counts and everything is nice and smooth
We might lose official support after ics but that would mean the next OS version is a long ways away
Nexus S is one good phone, and not obsolete at all yet. I'd recommend it. But it depends on what you plan to do with the phone, certainly a dual-core phone is better for gaming.
So,basically I am asking a simple question. After which Android release Nexus S is going to lose official support? I don't think it will lose it after ICS.

We don't know that.
However we assume it will lose support whenever it can't handle a version of Android that requires more than it has. ICS will be just fine, and it should not lose support after ICS. And even if it did, a port would most likely be quite easily made.
Yes I own nexus s and it is an awesome phone

A nexus s is a awesome phone, and yes google will eventually stop releasing updates for it. But if you dont have the money to buy a Motorola Razr or a Glaxy Nexus, the Nexus S is a great buy.
i'm very satisfy with nexus s battery life and a lot of developers support it, you should buy it if you are as poor as me
I upgraded to the nexus s from a kyocera echo(which could have been a good phone had kyocera released a recovery and it had some dev support.) and I've loved it since I got it. It's definitely a great phone and imo the best one in it's price range.
buy it. quality pure google phone. very satisfied user here.
Google has been asking for Android partners to go for *AT LEAST* an 18 month release cycle for its models, so that would mean that you'd get official updates up to about May/June 2012. They've never said explicitly they'd support the Nexus S for 18 months, but I think it's safe that they'd hold themselves to at least the same standards they want their partners to be. There's many articles online about the 18-months cycle, for example here: http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/10/google-clarifies-18-month-android-upgrade-program-details-far-f/
Now as to whether to buy the phone or not, I'd say go for it. I've had a ton of Android phones, including ones considered top of the line at some point of other, sgs2, lg 2x, you name it I've had it for at least two weeks. I love the Nexus' form factor, its weight, the amount of development that goes on and most of all, I LOVE that the stock rom is pure Android. The curved screen, in my opinion, is the most beautiful feature on the phone and I'd only swap this phone for a Galaxy Nexus.
290 is a damn good price. Go for it. Resale prices are also quite decent by the way, check ebay for used phones, they seem to sell for around 200-250 eur at the moment, and with them being among the first phones to get ICS, I doubt that will change that much.

A nexus s is a awesome phone, and yes google will eventually stop releasing updates for it. But if you dont have the money to buy a Motorola Razr or a Glaxy Nexus, the Nexus S is a great buy.

I agree, it's an awesome, fast and stable phone, but if you got the money for it, you definitely want to buy a Galaxy Nexus.
The Nexus S is the first phone I've ever had where a successor was released and I didn't care a whit. I love this phone and am totally satisfied with it in every way. I can't wait to play with it with ICS loaded.
It's the perfect size for my hand, battery life and general performance are great, it runs all the software that I want, and is just a good-looking phone. The GNex may be most of these things as well (it's too big IMHO and battery life remains to be seen) but there's nothing driving me towards upgrading from my current phone.
If you don't care about upgraded hardware and can be happy with "last gen" technology, the Nexus S IMO is the best bang for your buck. It'll be supported for a long time to come if the generally favorable feeling its users seem to have towards it continues.
Ok,I may be buying it. But I'm still not sure:
No HDMI
No Dual-Core
No FM Radio (i heard somewhere it works with cm7 and miui)
Secondary camera is only 0.3 MPx.

So,basically I am asking a simple question. After which Android release Nexus S is going to lose official support? I don't think it will lose it after ICS.

By the time the Nexus S "loses official support", you'll want something else, anyway.
EDIT: I just picked one up for $150 from local classifieds. Couldn't be happier.

What Sprint phone do you recommend?

My 2yr upgrade is coming up in April. I'm looking to continue running with Android OS (sorry Apple, you'll have to wait a few more years to get my hard earned cash). I'm curious to know what phones are currently out which developers are highly supporting at the moment? Also, what phones is everyone anticipating to get in the months to come. I'm coming from an EVO 4G where deveopement was very high (currently running w/MIUI Swiper version) So, I'm hoping I can get a new phone with similiar Dev support. Curious what everyone's thoughts are on this. Thanks in advance!
Depends on your criteria.
I bought Photon 4G because of specs. The build quality is better than HTC and Samsung. It is also a world phone (GSM locked in US) and has a good display screen. The camera is also very decent. No big complains yet. I have it rooted and it worked absolutely great for me. However, I have noticed that Sprint is a smaller carrier than ATT and Verizon and so, dev support is similar across the board. Moto on Sprint probably has less dev support than Samsung Galaxy series, since it is popular and specs are similar across varients on other carriers -- making it easier to port/share development across different carriers.
End of the day, Samsung, HTC and Moto, all run Android and you can customize it whatever way you like and will look the same on all phones. Lots of choice, but it might be a simple hardware comparison that will help you choose one.
I have owned HTC, Samsung, Nokia and Moto in the past. I believe that Nokia and Moto has the best build quality and it shows.
