What will the next big Google phone be?

I know that typically a few "Google Experience" devices come out each year. But, has there been any speculation on what the next major Google phone will be... as in the Nexus S sequel. (I am aware this hasn't been out that long, but it isn't in the cards to upgrade now, so I'm looking to the future )

I'm hoping it's a Nexus device either from HTC or Motorola - however with this 'own Motorola OS' rumour swirling around, that's looking unlikely, currently. But if the HTC Pyramid is a Nexus device, that'll be my next phone. Period. It'll be my next phone even if it isn't

Ya, I'm using an Atrix right now, and while I know it gets a lot of hate, I love the power. It's a great phone in terms of speed and potential. And, in spite of the restrictions it can do a lot. But, I want the freedom of a full on Google phone. I can't wait to hear what the Nexus 3 will be.

The Nexus One was clearly designed to rival anything else at the time in terms of specs, to be a development platform that would stay relevant for as long as possible.
This was a handset designed to make a serious splash and show Google's vision and determination for the platform.
The Nexus S on the other hand is a single-sore handset in a soon-to-be dual-core world. It's the complete opposite of the Nexus One in terms of making a splash, the only news features it brought to the table were gimmicks, like the concave screen; or features that are some time away from having any mainstream significance, like NFC.
The only thing I can think of is that there's some sort reason why Google have chosen to stick with single-sores CPUs for now - lack of proper dual-core utilisation by the OS maybe? I mean, it's not much of a development platform if you start introducing new features/hardware that the OS can't make proper use of...
The next Nexus handset will be a dual-core CPU, we can be sure of that. And I personally reckon it will be launched to accompany an Android update that introduces proper dual-core optimisation.
But that's just me.

The Galaxy S was one of the best selling Android phones. Most likely the most sales for a similar models of this generation and there's even more variations just coming out. A Nexus S device made sense. Create a platform phone that has the broadest reach in terms of compatibility. Devs can then base their apps on that consistency. The Nexus One was simliar - (how many phones had the first gen Snapdragon? Tons.). They picked right for the time frame. Dual cores came out soon after but I don't see that level of hardware consistency coming until later this year.

I disagree - if they wanted a dev platform using the Hummingbird CPU, the time to release it was the same sort of time as the original Galaxy S, get it out there ASAP so that the people who needed it could start using it immediately.
They were late.
Which is not to say too late, it will still be of some use but plenty of developers will already have a Galaxy S is they want a Hummingbird-based test-bed, especially given how easy it is to get stock Android on it.
Also, whilst some manufacturers like Samsung are developing their own dual-core CPUs and HTC seem woefully tied to Qualcomm, nVidia's Tegra2 SoC does seem to have reached some level of wide-spread adoption - certainly amongst tablets and also with some of the dual-core handsets that are coming to the market. Heck, even Samsung are using it to bolster their low Exynos supplies.
It wouldn't've been too much of a gamble on Google's part to have released a Tegra2-based dev handset IMO - not really that much less consistency than there has been the past 12 months.

Making it useless for a majority of the world... not sure I can see that happen while there are now radio chips that allow both GSM and CDMA.

I agree. It will definitely be using IceCream I think, and I'd definitely imagine it being HTC considering Motorola has dev's working on their own OS supposedly. Samsung and Sony pretty much do their own thing yeah?

Why would Samsung be any less likely to get the nod for the next Nexus handset than HTC? Both manufacturers have produced a Nexus-branded handset each, with Google choosing to move from HTC to Samsung for the last one.
If anything, I'd say Samsung are more likely to be selected, especially given they're actually improving on their previous handsets while HTC have stagnated.
As for SE, their entire survival revolves round Android, so I would hardly describe them as 'doing their own thing'.

I haven't particularly kept up with it all, only started the Android craze when I got this phone. I just remember the last time I looked at a SE phone it was using its own OS. And I definitely haven't worried with Droids or Nexus's, I didn't realize that the last Nexus was Samsung, I thought they were rolling heavy just on the Galaxy series.

Should partner with HTC ... should set a standard like what N1 did.

I would choose HTC again also. I do not agree that HTC is stagnated.
The build quality of the HTC´s phones is way better than Sammy. Sammy phones all look and feel like cheep plastic.

True. I feel the same, any smartphone Samsung I've put in my hand feels like I'd lose or crush it easily. However I have noticed their screens seem a bit better in sunlight, and they do seem to try and innovate a bit. But HTC (they didn't used to be though) has finally gotten to a consistent point on quality.

I guess there's still no rumors yet on what the ice cream showcase phone will be... I've been scouring the internet.

Hopefully google has learned to just sell their software and stay away from selling their own devices.

IPhone vs HTC vs Motorola

Okay, sorry but I feel the need to ask this flat out. I bought the Droid X a while ago and to be quite frank, it isn't as powerful as I was lead to believe. I jailbroke my itouch two years ago before I purchased my Android. I can now upgrade my device and am wondering if anyone has hands on experience between the three types of devices, which has the "most" enjoyable experience? When I look at my Droid x vs my itouch, honestly I can't help but think the better choice is an iPhone. But if anyone can tell me otherwise, Id be more than happy to listen.

Just go to your local phone shop and play with all the devices.

Honestly android doesn't compare at all to the iPhone stock. Android sucks when you first use it because of all of the crap and bloat that is loaded onto it by the manufacturer and carrier... to get a good experience out of it you need to root, install custom roms, mod, etc... it's the same idea as jailbreaking an iphone or touch. Explore the forums, try out miui, cm7, etc. and your experience will be a million times better. That's the same as any other android phone.
IPhones are good stock and good jailbroken, they're geared more towards the basic user and not the power user. Android phones are okay stock and great modified.

Okay so is it possible my droid x was just a bad choice? Iv used a lot of custom roms, miui is my favorite, but would an HTC be a noticeably better upgrade? Instead of another Motorola?

If you're a basic user (texts, emails, browsing, games) then I'd say go with the iPhone. But if you like modifying and playing with your phone, I'd say go Android - specifically HTC. Even rooted, Motorola phones are still locked down. I personally don't care for Motorola, but that's just my opinion.
But really it depends on what you like. As mentioned, go to your local store and play with the different phones. You can't tell how they're going to operate rooted or jailbroken, but you can get a feel for what you'll be getting.

I think Android is great for those who like to do little to major tweaks(I spend more time on those then in games) and people who came from linux

If you've already decided you prefer the iOS interface to Android, then an iPhone is the way to go. It's pretty out the box, simplistic and is easy for anyone to jump into. Like others have said, Android has far more power behind it once it's rooted with custom ROMs. Liken it to Windows vs Mac: a Mac looks good but is heavily limited in customisation by default; you can do what you want to Windows for the most part, but it's not going to be like that straight out of the box. Not the best analogy but it depends on what you want from the device.

Id say wait until the new Mango devices are released, HTC are releasing two shortly and it will be interesting to see the new offerings from Nokia with Mango.
I personally wouldnt buy a new device just yet, if you want to play, but a second hand hd2 and choose which OS to play with, a good and cheap way for trying OS out.

I heard most people raved about iPhone and never hear them say any specifics when small amount of people complain about the phone. I've never used an iPhone before, can you give some examples what are the cons about iPhone as far as usability/design...etc. sort of as a user (not a developer or technical user) kind of angle? Thanks!

I actually swapped to using Android (HTC Desire HD) from the iPhone 4. My personal issues with it were the ability to customise the layout out I wanted it. I also didn't like the way my feeds/calendar synced. It seemed simplistic and limiting to me.
That said, a lot of people love it.

I have been there with the Motorola click. hated it after 4 replacements. I gave up.
I have the HTC inspire 4G and loving it. never had a Iphone. and don't want one.

Agree with IPhone better right out of the box for the common user, but for me, would never choose Iphone over Android, just because there are no limits on what you can do to the Android. Got HTC Incredible the day it was released and rooted/upgraded to custom rom soon after and have been nothing but perfectly happy. Especially back then before apple had cut & paste, multiple application running, bluetooth stereo music streaming, removal batteries/replacement hong kong batteries for $5 each, etc. Been drouling over Samsung Galaxy S2, but may have to settle for Bionic if not available by end of the year on Verizon.

In terms of performance with an Android device you can suck every bit of it if you want. Also in terms of device performance at the same price Android devices outclass by far Apple's.

iPhone
I have used both Apple's and HTC's phones. They are both great. But I would choose the iPhone any day of the week. Probably just because I'm a big Apple fan. HTC makes great phones too. If I were to get an Android phone, it wouldn't be anything except for a HTC.

I have used both of android and iOS ones. To be honest, even for iOS devices, they vary. I have a 1st generation iPod Touch with 3.1.3, and my dad has 3G with 4.2.1, the experience on 3G is horrible after the update, because the iOS 4 is not made for that. Sure you will get 'better' experience with jailbreak, but it varies from person. So for Apple, I think it is good if you know the capability of your device and play with it.
I got my first android half year ago, HTC Wildfire, it was pretty good experience using it, simply it has the most app for me, gmail. Also it was cheap. But believe me, you dont get any eyes on it, people will think its just an ordinary phone. Second device, HTC Desire S. Just got it a few days ago, yeah this one its much smoother and faster phone, but also expensive.
So overall I did not make any sense on my post, but anyway, I tried.
My 7th post! 3 more then I can thank the LBC ROM for my HTC.
Edit: I think for android, the better configuration the better experience. But on iOS it is not that obvious, you will be able to play most (if not, a LOT) of the games on Appstore with your 2nd generation of iPod touch.

I'd go for HTC.
Have had 3 of them and have never had regrets.
Tested Iphones and was not impressed. Expensive and limited.

Im looking into picking a new phone, but like most of us I have a hard time deciding whats better to get after having the phone I thought was the greatest. So I Want to see what phone to get next, or what devices to consider, as well see what features to look for next, I was just happy when the Droid inc (1GHz processing power, 8MP Cam, and 512 MBs RAM) was announced and I still am when I look at and think about it. SO my question to the entire Community, What is the best phone, OS, ROM, Features, and why?
Phone EX: Nexus one, HTC EVO, HTC Touch Pro, LG Quantum
Custom built EX: HTC HD2 Running Windows phone 7,
Motorola Droid Running (Custom ROM or Stock)

the only 2 phones worth considering are:
SGS2
Nexus 3
or wait another months for the next best phones to come out, but by then you can wait another 3 months, and then even better phones are around the corner

Thank you, I like the looks of the Sensation XE, But I'm in the US how can I get it on verizon? if you know, and that HTC Holiday, but again, verizon.

the Nexus 3 is basically SGS2 but with a 5MP camera instead of 8MP, but improved screen SAMOLED+ HD 720p resolution

Nexus 3 is what I'm waiting for.. .iphone 5 is sounding real sexy too at the moment. Seems like it will be the thinnest phone once it releases.on top of its sexy teardrop all aluminum design reminiscent of the MacBook air from what I've read (all speculations)Too bad ios sucks!

As much as I dislike HTC, the HTC titan is in a league of it's own as far as phones go. With processing power, it's not the absolute best. The thing is though, that only matters on an OS like android where it will only run remotely decent even with a top-end processor. Aside from that it sports a massive screen, ffc for video chat, solid body, up to 32 gigs internal, and most importantly windows phone 7. I'm sorry, but I don't buy high-end hardware to put an OS on it that was and is intended for crap hardware. My OS needs to keep up with me. Can I customize my phone to the point that it is unstable, slow, but reflects me? No. I can add numerous tiles with all kinds of pictures on a dynamic UI which totally beats a background image for me. Android is great if customization is your ONLY concern, for quality, speed, social integration, gaming,business, media, and pretty much anything else you'd be ripping yourself off if you went any way but the windows phone 7 way.

Whats the MIUI phone? the phone I used to want (though probably outdated now) was called the first else phone, and it was only sold in the middle east, but everyone seems to be on samsung now, I just cant be excited about that, esp since everything I would buy from them usually looks alot better than it preforms. The two phones that top my list now thou would be the Sensation XE, and the Rhyme(almost to the point where the color doesn't even matter)
But I have heard alot of good about the nexus prime. I just feel like if I actually knew how how to program it would be of that much more use to me.

Stay away from WM7 on an HD2 if you want the card slot to survive. It will kill the card slot. Mine, I can run WM7, but if I try to flash Android or other ROMs, the card slot won't work. WM7 runs from the card in the slot excessively and wears it out. WM7 just isn't worth it.

Imho I have used the Samsung epic and also the EVO 4g (not the 3d) and have noticed that the EVO is by far the best one out of the two... Also the most customizable in the sense if being able to switch from sense 3.0 to 3.5 and to asop...

well the only exception to your analogy is the sgs 2 or a totally stock/cyano/miui rom, according to my experience from my hd2 and captivate days. If it's sense, you can expect it to lagg, even when you have nothing on your homescreen.
That aside, I have to agree, WP7 is a great piece of work. Micro created a smooth, simple UI/OS that competes with apple in all those terms and maybe even better in some aspects. What Micro is "copying" from Apple is making phones that run on the "same specs". And the advantage to that is any app placed on the market will be able to run on all WP7 phones, unlike some android apps, which will work on a certain phone but not another.
What i don't like however is that really, all of them look the same (UI/appearance). It makes me feel like i don't have anything special. Which is the same with an iPhone(a stock one atleast). Atleast with android I can customize my status/notificaton bar, change my launcher layout/appearance, change certain effects e.g. overscroll glow to bouncy, change my lockscreen, change my icons, change my settings/menu appearance, which overall means i can have a phone that's different than the next or atleast appears different. (note also the lagg that you state coming from all this customization was atleast non apparent to me in my hd2 days, and for me now in my sgs 2)
Now I may be wrong about WP7 as i haven't even checked on the hacks/customization available since my HD2 days running WP7.

Well to be honest, you'll probably find more apps in the andoid market than in the app-store. What's even better: most are free.
The software itself is looking more like iOS, and iOS more like android. But in the end I like my android phone with Sense3.0, cause it's more open in my opinion. Now concerning you're apps, just take a look in the android market yourself to make up your mind:

I'll be honest with you. Your main concern is the apps and games so stick with the iPhone 4s its a smashing device for entertainment. You get all the mainstream games first on ios. Also you spent a lot of money on it , if you really are completely unhappy with your iphone, there are now a range of better android phones with better displays and features. Go for stuff like the galaxy nexus/ amaze 4G etc. I honestly don't think that the sensation now has any usp to buy it over the newer phones other than user preference or a cheaper price tag.

If you'd act smart you might find a person who'd pay you a lot more than required for a new sensation just because of the demand of your iPhone. There is a lot of isheep in this world.

Hmm do you enjoy future proofing phones and meddling with the insides of the phone's software for the greater good?

The apps from Apple app store is much better IMHO. There are some good entertainment apps on Android but not as much as Apple and not as new too.

Apps are more polished on the iOS, and for the most part, are more consistent. Sometimes I find apps don't work as well on the Sensation. But the caveat is that usually you have to pay for their apps.
To be honest there are only a couple of apps that I can't do without on the Sensation, and those are GoSMS, Evernote, Dropbox, Tapatalk, Twitter, Music, Root Explorer, Navigation. Everything else is pretty much icing on the cake.

I see the iphones as working as advertised. The android phones require some assembly.
For instance, HTC was a POS for not optimizing the Sensation like Samsung did the GS2. Just because GingerBread wasnt ready for dual core phones, doesnt mean HTC had an excuse to go weak on us. Samsung spent time getting the GS2 to work like it should...HTC just keeps throwing Sensation variants at the market instead of optimizing.
I hate that I have to wait for DEVS to fix what HTC should have done from the start. The Iphone does what you want it to do, right out of the box. (At least with my experience). All my android phones require rooting and tweaking to get it to work as advertised.
Now, with the Iphone, what you see is what you get. You wont find the same hardware that the android super phones have, so there goes your potential. Youll need to buy a new phone each time instead of wait for a new Android flavor.
And yea...The android apps are hit and miss sometimes. Everyone has an app now these days...

most apps work fine on the Senny.
those that don't work or can't get from the Google market, there are work arounds.
there are some apps that are not available or that don't work(due to driver issue) but percentage isn't that large.
personally don't mind putting up with minor inconvenience for more open, better looking OS/UI, and better hardware.
having said that though, if I was in the market for a Android phone now, I'd skip the Senny and get one of the newer phones out now.
i.e. Galaxy Nexus, Droid Razr, ect.

I recommend you stick with iPhone 4s. I sold my iPhone 3G some year ago and tried a couple of Android devices. Altough Android is great, it can never compare to iOS´s stability and speed. Also the apps/games are pretty polished to work flawlessly on iPhones. I have never been more satisfied with other system than iOS. Main Android´s disadvantage is that is produced for various devices with various hardware capabilties. And manufacturers never make perfectly flawless firmwares for it (and because of that the XDA forums exist ) Now I´m selling my Sensation (purchased for 540 euros) which is suffering from really funny defects (see many complain threads in here on XDA). I´m really pretty pissed and have strong feeling that I´ll buy iPhone again.

To be fair, we ought to wait for ICS before comparing phones. ICS is supposed to bring what the Sensation should have had all along. If ICS rolls around and we still see numerous issues, then the iPhone 4s would be the winner.
iPhones work great without having to fiddle with them, but are already at their best.
Android phones are usually way ahead of the software and either have to wait months (sometimes a friggen year) or require ALOT of fiddling. ICS is supposed to unite all the devices, so we will see.
If it wasnt for tmobile being such a tard, I would have also chosen an iPhone.

Why did you get an android phone?

The title says everything.
For me i got my desire a year ago because I saw it as top on techradar, besides I wanted to try android while my brother got an iPhone 4.
Edit: from some of the posts here I find it really depressing because most of you would have chosen iPhone if it was cheap. Which means android was like a substitute, but i really think android is much more useful as a phone.
IPhone can be jailbroken and customized but its really unstable IMO.
Android can be customized but its not polished enough in certain areas

Seems like I did the same thing, got an iPad, iPhone 4S, and the LG thrill
phones are phones... I like both phones for different reasons

Galaxy S II v iPhone 4
I had to get one or the other and quickly decided on the Galaxy S II even though i was all new to the Android scene, Galaxy S II was cheaper on contract as well as being packed in terms of hardware, iPhone 4 is no slouch though!
Here i am 6months later, couldn't be happier with my purchase!

I got android cause what is the point of having 2 iPhones? I got my first android for work, rom'd it and loved the versatility. Wifi tether is a God send in my industry. I love Android, I have had a Droid Milestone, Droid 2 Global, HTC Inspire 4g and I just got my Galaxy Nexus =].
I am PRO Android

A few reasons:
1.) Got a G1 at launch, loved the software but hated the hardware, and thus returned it. Then I got tied into an iPhone contract.
2.) Three years(-ish) later, I switched to Virgin Mobile for a few months to get some bills paid down. Got an Optimus V for next to nothing, and loved it, but I just needed more headspace.
3.) Got everything bill-wise taken care of and looked into different phones. I had a great experience with T-Mobile, so I decided I wanted to go back to them. Looked at their different phones and decided that the Galaxy SII was gonna be my next, and thus far, I love it.
Hopefully we get a vanilla port of ICS, whatever channel that may be through. But I'm not too beat up over it if we don't. Just have to wait and see what Cyanogenmod has to offer in a few months.

I got an Android phone after using Android on my HD2 for a long time. I decided to try out a real Android phone so I got an Inspire (Desire HD). Excellent phone but all of my experience with Android...on many, many versions on HD2 and many real Android phones I've returned during the return period...the battery life is severely poor.

i was casually developing an interest in linux so it seemed like the right thing to do when my iPhone 3G broke down.

Why Oh Why
Because all of the cool kids were doing it...
actually my WinMo phones were getting a bit long in the tooth and support was lagging so i gave it a try on an HD2 and the rest is history. For me ASOP, CM and Sense are the only builds worth using. I've since moved on to some android tablets but have started using a WP7 device as my daily driver phone.
I still have my desire Z and use it mostly to test new roms or OS builds, testing some light development work or when i get bored with things working elegantly and consistently.

I purchased an Android phone because I truly believe that OSS is the future.

I was religiously using Windows Mobile and it was time for something new

Same for me.
I have used 4 WinMo Phones before switching to android. All because winmo was a crap , laggy and bad. Now android phones are more fast , also the devolpers are all devolping for android and not more winmo.

I hated Apple but kinda wanted an iphone, it's shortcomings at the time kept me away from it. In February of 2009 I signed a 2 year contract with a Samsung Eternity thinking I was getting an iphone experience without the shortcomings. Within a month I realized my phone was nothing special, just a dumb phone with a screen and i decided I was getting a smartphone the next time. The market to me seamed bleak seemed nothing could hold a candle to the iphone and you just had to deal with no mms amongst other things. And then my brother showed off his brand new T-mobile G1 and i was blown away. I had heard about the "google " phone but it seemed like it's release was a non event. I saw apps and customization options and multiple home screens. I wanted one, but sadly I wasn't even half way to my upgrade date. Over the next year the obsession grew and while I planned to leave at&t in February of 2011, I couldn't wait any longer and come November 2010 I opted for an early upgrade with a Samsung Captivate
