[Q] Best Smartphone

I am trying to decide on a new phone. The carrier is not an issue, I've had a rooted mytouch, a rooted nexus one, stock evo4g, and currently now have an epic 4g. Multimedia and apps are very important to me, the iphone4 looks good, but my current phone my be better. Am thinking about a windows phone but don't know anything about them. Any suggestions?

If you are looking to mod/play with your phone do not choose a winmo7 phone.. Not quite yet. It simply is what it is and they are so new the apps are not there yet. As far as apps the iPhone in sheer quantity has the most but Android is where the devs are turning to more and more. There are also a lot of apps on android that are not on an iPhone. The new Nexus S is an amazing fast device as I have been playing around with mine and the SAMOLED with its curves and anti smear screen IMO out plays the iPhone4s smaller not quite as bright seeming screen. I work at att and see the thing every day and still feel Samsung has really got the best screen (apps). Windows has done well with this new operating system but is still very new, Apple will be Apple, blackberry is great for non-Gmail email and Android will let people play with what they wanna play with. Depends totally what you plan on doing beyond media and apps

I say go for the HTC Leo. Great perfomance, great screen, and it runs WM 6.5, WM 6.5.x, Android, and soon hopefully WP7

Buying a device with the intent of running two officially unsupported OSs probably isn't the best idea...

If they work why not? He already rooted his old phone so I dont think he ios adverse to playing around and bringing out a phones true potential.

The branded galaxy S phones have the best multimedia support but you already got one so...
Best apps however, go for an iPhone 4. Unfortunately, you can't have the best of both worlds.

Just curious what phones and OS you are running?
I'm new to Android having started with the 1G iPhone and then the Palm Pre. I recently purchased the epic 4G and then discovered XDA forums. The epic was my first root and experience with changing roms, so i felt somewhat comfortable purchasing and rooting the gTab. I have to say, compared to the epic community which can be a little rude to each other, you all have been a breath of fresh air and a great experience! Thanks to everyone for all the info and constant updates

Agreed... I think with any 'community' the bigger it gets the worse it may get. Right now there is a small eclectic group here and several have been here from the beginning. The nice things about this group is that it was evident from the get go that the UI on this things was crap so it's been a HUGH group effort in true development (headed by a few very dedicated guys), people that know what the potential is and want to work together to have a good usable product.
I personally have the Vibrant (Samsung Galaxy S) and got it day one. Running an Overclocked Froyo ROM with a front facing camera. I've had Quadrants at 2600 (stock was about 850). I have owned every Windows phone, Palm, and Blackberry and this was my first Android. Needless to say because of open source and people like I've met here, I don't plan on looking back anytime soon.
Enjoy your toy, it's very addictive.

I have the HTC EVO 4G with grooveDROID 1.01 ROM. That coupled with the free Wireless Tether App and my G Tablet equals wireless fidelity for the G tablet.
Android rocks!

I guess I am a hold over on everything... (2.00 here)! and still using my 1 1/2 year old touchpro 2 winmo with mightyrom OS. Have wifi tether built in and everything works just fine for me. Using it to tether my gtablet all day at work and on the go. Have 10 more months on the contract and figure I will ugrade to android phone then. Much will change in 10 months

Droid X here, running Apex froyo with Gingerbread theme. This is my second Android Phone started with the original Moto Droid 1. Have had two Blackberry's the storm and tour. Got tired of replacing them so I jumped to android. I saw a review on the sears site about the gtab saying xda was all over it and knew this was the tablet I was looking for! I respect the guys that dev for the gtab it makes this device usable! Gotta love the the android community and what they do! Thanks to everyone taking their time to make our device so much better!

N900/Maemo5.

myTouch 3G and Nexus One both running CM

I went from original iPhone to iPhone 3GS then Nexus One. Don't think I could ever go back to an iPhone. I have no clue where I'll go next unless a better Android phone comes out on AT&T. Still rockin my unlimited data plan.
Oh and I'm running CM 6.1.1. I recently tried a GB rom but not everything was working and CM was faster. Can't wait for Gingerbread to hit CM

OG droid 1 that's why I don't complain so much about wiping data. I'm used to doing that with my droid. I used to flash ROMs almost on a daily basis but not so much anymore.

At the moment running the Samsung Captivate - Yes I currently have 2 products that I had to import from the US to Australia
Before that in reverse order I had Galaxy i9000, Nexus One, HTC Hero, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G and before that a whole heap of Nokias from the N95 to the 5150.

Like Pershoot, I have a Nexus One currently. I had a G1 on launch day, and god, what a craptastic phone that was when it was launched (slow, laggy, buggy, sucky, but showed the potential of Android). I spent quite some time suffering as an iPhone jailbreaker and unlocker, starting with an iPhone 2G and later with an iPhone 3G.
Back in the day I was into the Treo devices. Treo 600 was my first smartphone, and I had a Treo 650 for a long time, which ran the venerable but fantastic ChatterEmail. Push IMAP, like K-9 mail, but back in 2004 or thereabouts.

Rockin the Original Droid since launch day over a year ago and used to running many roms on it but have been using Ultimate Droid Rom's for the past few months and its awesome, cant wait to hopefully get my g tablet for xmas so that i can experience the greatness you all talk about on these forums.
If its not a gift i may make it a gift for myself haha.

Spent the summer tweaking a Witstech A81-E tablet. Recently purchased a NookColor and literally days later received a gift of a Viewsonic G-tab.

The original Droid 1 running Bugless Beast 0.6 with a Slayher kernel....wifi tether and share gps over bluetooth for a truly amazing navigation system!!!

My first Android was a G1 which I've now passed to my wife to get her hooked (and she is). It's running CM6.1. I'm running a stock MT4G but am very much looking forward to diving into the first dual core phone that hits Tmobile next year with honeycomb (as long as it's not a Samsung).

[Q] Curious: Why did you purchase that?

I was curious what was your reason behind purchasing either a phone, tablet, or slate? Please Bold the device name, so we know the product. Some products have common names, such as Desire. Most of know about HTC Desire but its for new the comers.

So I've purchased the last year and half
Nexus, To get into Development and I needed an unlock phone. My iPhone 3G was slow and Nexus was just shockingly fast.
iPad: It had 3G and GPS, i wanted to use it as GPS Dashboard. I ran into troubles with the apps, none of the apps support the full screen navigation till several months later.
iPhone 4: Development and just to be hip (don't slam me for being hip...)
Nexus S: Also great for development and the damn thing had a front facing camera that I could use within development apps.
Moto Atrix: 4G*, Dual Core, frontfacing camera, GFX, 1gig of ram, and I thought it would be great for development but I prefer the Nexus S. Honestly, I love my Atrix but its a pain. Its running on 2.2 as of now, the 4G connection is slower than 3G, and MOTO Blur. Moto Blur should be an option on its devices.
Asus Eee transformer: It was cheap, fast, and of course (you guessed it!) for development...

I got this Desire about a year ago. When i choosed it i could also pick a Galaxy S and an iPhone4 (contract). I didn't pick the Galaxy because i wasn't convinced about the build quality, the annoying lack of flash and notification led annoyed me and also because at that time development for that specific phone was kinda weak. The iPhone wasn't even worth considering because iOS4 was piss poor compared with froyo, and also because xda goodies were just too tempting for me. Probably if the iPhone had iOS5 on it already, with many android features copied, my choice would have been a little harder, but i was so curious about android that i would have probably grabbed the Desire anyway.

I find it interesting that a lot of people now are working towards Android, what made you decide on Android when you had options like WebOS, Windows Mobile, Symbian. Or Was it the hardware too?

Well actually being a long trade HTC fan helped me deciding. I was coming from a winmo 6.1 HTC device (Cruise) and i wanted to try out android. Sure hardware was also something i took into account: android phones were much better than any symbian back then already, and WP7 seemed unable to compete in terms of functionality, it seemed to be a really locked down os plus i truly hated the interface (and i still do lol). WebOS was actually worth considering, but it already felt like something from the past: back in the days of the big android boom i saw google's platform as the best option, tho i always appreciated palm devices in terms of form factor and ease of use.

I love how Palm's GUI and user experience is right in the middle of being like an iPhone and Android. Its pretty as an iphone but open like android device. Its an ideal OS but I think the hardware... Thats whole different story, Its so small.

I had the desire to purchase Nook Color and turn it into a honeycomb device but I really needed a snappy processor and a good graphic accelerator. Have you hacked the Nook Color and if so, with what?

Last year and a half for me:
iPhone 3GS 32GB White: Loved my original iPhone from 2008 (primary on TMO), but it couldn't run any new apps so I upgraded and the price was right. Sold it.
iPhone 3GS 16GB Black: I really did not like white. At all, so I bought this, but it was an unlockable baseband, ugh. Sold it.
HTC Desire CDMA: My backup phone (Touch Diamond on Verizon) was getting too old, so I thought I'd pick up something modern to replace it.
Droid Incredible AMOLED: Bought for my wife to use on PagePlus, to replace the original iPhone she had since 2008 on TMO. She loves it, hates iPhones.
Droid Incredible SLCD: Liked my wife's D-Inc better than the HTC Desire, but I liked the Desire's SLCD better than the AMOLED, so I got an SLCD D-Inc for myself.
Nexus One: I bought it to use on TMO, because after using the D-Inc, I didn't like my white iPhone 3GS at all. Not just because I don't like white phones, but because its low-res screen looked like crap in comparison. Love the N1, still have it, but plan to sell.
iPhone 4: My new primary on TMO, replaced the N1. Main reason for it, because I already have a D-Inc as a backup, my wife has a D-Inc, and we both decided variety=good, better not to have too many of the same thing, so iPhone it is. I do like it, love the Retina display, build quality, size, thinness, how it feels in the hand, smooth games, and I'm much happier with it now that I found a nice HTC Clock for it.
HTC Surround: Mostly got this because it was a good price (at the time) on the marketplace, and I'm already familiar with Android and iOS, I wanted to see what WP7 is like. I am actually more impressed with it than I expected to be. UI a bit boring, but the same apps on WP7 are WAY nicer than their iOS and Android counterparts. Only problem is, there aren't very many apps available in general.
Samsung Omnia II i920: WM6.5 phone, bad ESN, that I picked up cheap. Sort of got it in my head this would be a nice dev phone. I thought it would be cool to write an "Alien Dalvik" for WM6.5 so it could run Android apps. I just hate the thought of all the millions of "obsolete" WM6.5 phones out there and had the idea that a Dalvik VM for WM would be a very good form of recycling. Will probably end up selling as I seldom follow through on any idea I ever get.
MyTouch 3G: It was cheap, thought it could make a nice desk clock that auto-sets its time/date. It would have cost at least as much to buy an atomic desk clock that's always lit, and this could even display weather at the same time.

HTC Hero CDMA (aka HeroC): Bought refurbished from Sprint for $80, no contract renewal needed. I bought this to get rid of a crappy Blackberry 8520 I was using on Sprint that I got free when I started my contract. For me, Android does what I need.
Blackberry Curve 8520: Bought because all my friends had Blackberries. While I found it useful for sending text messages, I found it useless for about everything else (web browser)!
All phones were on the Sprint network.

I feel sorry for BB lately, its going down hill fast. They made a pretty bad moves since the iPhone came out. Nice bargin on HTC Hero, lovely device.

Same here, i still hope that they manage to release something nice soon, the new bold coming out on september isn't that bad it seems...

iPhone 3GS 16GB Black: First experience with smartphone. And needed one for work wich allowed me to connect and synch easy with my workspace
Galaxy Apollo: Had some issues with iphone sold it and got this pretty cheap Android phone. Using it for roughly a year now and like it alot. Perfect synch to both work and personal spaces.
iPad: Won it so didn't buy it but really didn't like or needed it that much so sold it after 1 month and got myself a new video card

First i had a LAMEE chocolate (BL-40) from LG - never had a worse phone on my life. I wanted to try touchscreen and stuff, and it was almost free...
Then i switched to a blackberry. That was a total deception. EVERYBODY said that Blackberry was soooo good, i found it to be an average phone at best.
After that i switched to a Xperia X10, which came with a malfunction on the usb conector and tech support declared it as bad use. (never trust brazilian tech support - is the worse). I got it resoldered, and it worked for another 10 months. - I wanted a phone with android mostly because of its sync, to have all my services linked with my gmail account was awesome.
Last saturday i got a Samsung Galaxy SII, and so far is the best. I decided not to go with Sony anymore, and i wanted one of the newest. I'm yet to experience lag with it...

The I i saw the dell venue pro running the sexy wp7 UI i was in love. I had a few of the big name android devices that were huge at the time and they just seemed slow in comparison. Then there was the ergonomic feel, the curved glass, the keyboard that's flawless for one-handed use... Everything about this phone is just flawless IF you weren't one of the ones who got one of the faulty initial devices.

iPod Touch 3G My MP4 broke
Moto Defy Because I needed a new phone, and this seemed the best for my spesifications, and, well, for development. For example, I am trying to port Motoblur widgets and apps into MIUI.

HTC Legend - Bought this because I needed the Chuck Norris of smartphones. You could hammer some nails with this baby. The size is also spot on for me.

HTC Thunderbolt: 4G (15-20mbps downloads). 'Nuff said.

The first time yo messed around with android, what did you think?

I remember my first time seeing a real android phone. I saw plenty of commercials about the original mytouch. But the day my friend walked into class and showed it to my teacher, it just blew my mind. He showed off how it had multiple screens, and he even had a bleach background (and let me tell you, it was beautiful). I didn't really look in depth about android. But i did learn a few months or a year later that the G2 was coming out. My dad wanted a faster blackberry (for his job) so we went to a T-mobile store and he asked for a fast phone. The person at the counter showed him the G2 and i immediately recognized it. In fact the whole store was filled with android phones that i played around with very much. It was not until my mother got my a Pandigital novel that i learned about rooting and rom (still didn't understand it as in depth as i do now).
TL;DR: When i first saw android, i didn't know what it was but i did think it was beautiful.
Now i wanna hear about your first experiences with android. Or what you thought when you first laid eyes on one.

Before i get an android i had a symbian phone so when i bought my htc wildfire i couldn't stop install rom and all stupid stuff on it, FREEDOM !!

switched from a crappy samsung phone without even a proper name (just an alphanumeric one) to the HTC DHD/Inspire 4g it was my forst android phone and it was and still is amazing because the one thing about android is, is that it never ceases to amaze me. Be it the official stuff or the root community, all of it is amazing.

lol my sis has the cliq right now. And boy that was the slowest thing i've ever touched. It was so slow that i rooted it and set the cpu higher to make it faster. It only made it 35% faster lol

It was stock on a D2, and I remember it lagging so badly. I tried to mod and customize but the deeper I got into it the slower it got. Then I finally made the choice to stick with android and buy a top tier phone, which is my GNex I have now and couldn't be happier. Lol
Android has come a long way, and the older versions really give it a bad name on those slow / sluggished spec'd phones.

My first Android was the Sanyo Zio by Kyocera. Which happened to be Kyoceras first Android as well. I think it was fate because it took me about a month before I decided to get it rooted. At the time there was virtually no development for it, source code was still nearly a year from release. So it gave me a chance to really get in to Androids and all the customization and some amateurish development. So really it assured my love of the OS.
Lower end phones arent always the worst. Im stuck on one now since some ass stole my Sensation. Its not too terrible, but if I was a total noob it would be. Thanks to my Zio Im not. Link2sd is a godsend for low capacity devices.
I can honestly say I will never own another kind of phone. If its not Android Im not interested.

I was intrigued as soon as I saw the "iDon't" commercials. I did a lot of reading and followed a few now-defunct forums. When the D2 came out I bought it sight unseen. Once I looked into rooting and learned how amazing the experience could become I was hooked.

One of my family members has a phone on Gingerbread. Running that was cool, especially since she came from a BlackBerry.
Then I got a Galaxy Nexus and was floored at how much better the experience was. Matias Duarte, that UI and UX pioneer, really and completely changed Android to the point that stock is awesome. Android went through puberty and has finally matured.

The very first time I messed around with android, it was in the back seat of my 1966 Chevy Nova at "the point".
The second time, I got busted by her old man with my finger inside her USB port...

I found jailbreaking easier that being said I also put my iPhone into a blender since i hated it. Rooting/flash I find more combersome for some reason though it's really not that difficult.

Haha I know right? I was so excited to get rid of it. Pulling down the statusbar on cm7 was laggy 0.o
I tweaked the hell out of it to no avail. The reason why I never had a bad impression of Android was because my friends were all showing off their superphones and when I finally upgraded, I knew how much better the experience would be

Just depends on the phone. Motos on certain versions of Froyo and GB have a one-click root that's even easier than jail breaking. Even the work around now isn't too bad. I will say when I see what's required for some I just think, "Glad I don't have to do all that."

My first experience was with the T-Mobile G1/HTC Dream, which I got release week. It was and still is in my top 10 list of best phones. The way the keyboard slid out and clacked was amazing! I love that phone!

My first android phone was a Samsung Galaxy S2, i picked that over the Skyrocket and i never really regretted it. The first thing i did with the phone when i came home from the store was root it. After that i found out about kernels, roms, and hundreds of mods. And ever since then I've been flashing roms way too much. Some times i change the rom 3-4 times in a day, and other times i try my best to stick with one rom, but i keep wanting more from the device so i go looking for more roms and mods.

First android was an HTC Desire Z. Still have it and love it. Now rocking an SIII and soon a GNex again.

Why?
For me: I had used 3 iPhones, (3GS, 4, 4S). After close to a year with the iPhone I saw how boring it was to see the icons. Over and over again.
Then I deceided to get the latest of android at the time. The Galaxy Nexus with 4.0 :thumbup: But comming from an iPhone, I missed the quantity and the quality of the apps. But soon I got used to it.
My future of android phones, HTC One X, Galaxy Note and the S4.
So far my impressions are very good on Android but when I used to jailbreak my iPhone the quality of Cydia tweaks over the 'mods' and ROMs for Android devices.
I hope people find this useful.

I'm come from Bada with a Samsung Wave, there were a lot of good things, but the store was too poor with apps... I was searching an Android phone (don't like the narrow-minded of Apple), so I search a phone without Phone bill, the phones are very expensive, but after reading a lot review, I choose a Galaxy Nexus for $420

I had all the iPhones ever made I moved to android cause of big screen and I wanted to try something different but as of now I only have one gripe its the fact I can't get my contacts off itunes .

I come from symbian, android and the quality is exceptional by comparison, are more than satisfied!

Android
I've always been a fan of various Linux distros so I have a better understanding of whats going on inside my HTC One V phone (now with CM 10.1 ) so I've always thought Android was the way to go. Most Linux based OS/apps usually have an awesome community (like xda dev) to help with any problems that may pop up.

I came to Android from Symbian OS, I had Nokia 5230 for 3 years before, and I got bored of it's slow performance, and low RAM, so I decided to upgrade it to Samsung Galaxy S3, which was a great step I think, and I learned many things with my Samsung, so now I am not that stupid beginner on Android which I was before.

i switched form IOS because android makes me feel FREE. Im cant just change "almost" everything... I can change EVERYTHING!

I had a maxx mobile which is a local company
it was such a pathetic phone , with its bad keypad , small screen , no apps nothing
Later I read about android os in news and about so many applications and based on Linux ( using linux on pc for long time )
it was then I wanted to buy an android phone
Hence the jump

I switched because I felt there weren't as many cool apps with the iPhone as there are with androids. I haven't missed my iPhone yet.

Because symbian is dead.

Because the only alternative at the time was iOS. Windows looked too ugly and didn't function how i wanted it to.
I came from a winmo 6.5 HTC HD2. (tmobile nl branded one, so I couldnt even get the newest firmware to flash android onto it.) Eventually, the marketplace was shut down. Which wasnt that big of a problem if you have no issue with piracy. But then the microphone broke, and I decided it was time for a new phone.
And Android gave me choices, iOS doesn't. So there was never any real 'choice', which is fine I'm perfectly happy with Android.
So it became the s3 (no MicroSD = no buy. So HTC ONE was as little of an option as the iPhone. )
Now eagerly awaiting the Note 3.

Htc touch pro. Because the windows mobile is dying and less application makes me feel its a boring system .no playful games such some game loft game in android now! But some how I still miss it .cause it can make video call by network ,not video chat in application now.

Android
When the time came to make a choice, I chose the Android platform.
Many of the people I knew at the time that were using the Windows platform had many complaints and problems.
I knew little about the iOS phones, but I'm happy I chose Android.
I've had zero problems!

I myself was sick of iOS and pretty much having to have the new phone to run the new versions of the apps, which was total bs, not to mention the whole thing just started freezing up after awhile just cause it was 'old', I would literally have to throw it on the ground (carpeted) then reboot it just to get it running again for a few minutes. Never seen that problem with android, hell my boyfriend was running s2 up until a month or two ago when he got the htc one, not once did I see it lockup.

If you backup to icloud you can export your contact list as a Vcard and import it on your new phone easy... Thats what I did, I had the 3gs and 4s and was just tired of chasing the next jailbreak.
I love my new HTC One!

"Jumped" to Android because it's open source, Google owns it, I can do whatever I want with it ( Nexus 4 ), etc...
iOS devices are not choice, thay never was, never will.
Switched from "dumbphone" Sony Ericsson W610i

I came from the ios zone i switched to android because upgeading on ios is a pain :l

WebOS
I switched from WebOS (Palm). I enjoyed the phone Palm Pre+, but the OS was severely limited and did not catch on as HP had hoped it would. It was small, fast (for it's time) and had good storage 16gb. It is still my MP3 player, why buy an apple product if you have something that works.

From 2003 onwards I was using Symbian from s60v2 to Anna till 2009, I was very used to Symbian as it also supported off market apps of java and sis /sisx(side load), I was well aware of all the tricks in that OS. But Nokia has never changed it's interface.
Then I switch to Android seeing no development is going in Symbian OS and Nokia people are migrating to MS
