Why do people not root? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What's the reason for people not rooting? There have been 1 click installers since July. I still see people posting like it's some wild thing only 1337 h4x0rs do when my grandma rooted her phone.
Or people weighing the benefits and debating whether or not to do it. It takes 15 minutes to unroot it back to stock(if you have a good sd card) so what's all the fuss about it? I've yet to see a brick made by anything other than physical damage. maybe a bad BIOS flash or firmware update would do it to computer parts but the tablets are pretty hard to brick.
inb4 "enjoying stock experience". buy an ipad for that.

pretty easy to brick actually, if I didn't have nvflash access to my device I would have bricked my device half a dozen times by now. I've also bricked my Galaxy Tab 7" twice now.

Also, starting with some B70s, there was no one click for quite some time, until Razorclaw

Personally, I haven't had much of a reason to root mine. I've had a rooted G1 and currently use a rooted Nexus S.. only because I knew I could make it better by flashing a custom ROM. The Transformer runs well enough for me out of the box.

I like my devices rooted, but I can understand if people don't want to root. There are plenty of threads that start out "Help, I tried to root, but now I'm screwed!" It's certainly not rocket science, but there is a risk and I can understand if some people don't want to take that risk with their tablet, time, or money.
I would guess that some people don't want to follow every thread here on XDA to figure out if Nachoroot will root the .21 firmware that was rooted with Razorclaw on the .19 firmware, but borked by the OTA. I'm not even sure what the answer to that is?
Lastly, maybe people actually use their tablets as tablets?? I thought they were portable Android! playgrounds where the trick to the puzzle was to root the OTA before you're forced to flash it. I enjoy my tablet, but the IT guy at work asks me why I need to root it and I can't come up with a great reason why other than I can.

I agree. My phone is rooted and running a rom pretty much because out of the box, it was down right horrible to use (and on most occasions I love having the latest and the greatest) .
With my Transformer, speed has never been an issue. Asus has done a great job with Honeycomb for the TF101. It never feels slow or laggy.
I can say, however, that if there was a sure-fire way to recover from a brick on SBKv2 devices (nvflash), I would experiment a little more with custom roms.

But for voodoo control plus I could live without root. Don't get me wrong I love all the goodies it brings like titanium backup pro and so on; but essentially because no manufacturer to date has properly implemented in hardware and software the hardware audio capabilities of any android device, I always buy a wolfson based voodoo supported device and seek root.
(Please no one make any claims about audio particularly in that HTC beats software based bollocks they are ripping people off with!).
The question of why Tf101 users aren't rooting is different. Look at the ilk or breeding of TF101 users in xda as opposed (for arguments sake) to those nexus s users here. By comparison the TF101 users are greener than the grass in Ireland.
But I believe it comes from this :
The vast majority of mobile phone owners will use their phones and be done with it.
Tablet owners on the other hand, no matter how uber noob will be more likely to congregate to gather advice and solutions as if we are honest - it ain't no iPad.
This in mind I fully understand the amount of totally over excited kids it seems are hanging around salivating awaiting the official ICS.
I use my tf101 for a multitude of things. Only really my love of music needs root. I'm down with the situation, all is cool.

Why not to root? I don't understand either!
I daily use the rooted part of my transformer:

* Hidebar to hide the bottom systembar
* chroot to get to a Debian image on it
* modified hosts to limit ads

Not everyone needs VPN.
Not everyone needs to hide the bottom systembar.
Not everione wants a Debian image in it
Not everyone is that bothered with the few ads they might bump into.
Really, the kind of people who think that rooting the device is a MUST seem just like the bunch of Android fanboys that have to scream at people buying Apple products. "It's better! Don't use that!"
People have to realize that some times there's just no particular reason for certain things, and rooting is one of them. There's just no particular reason for some people.
Did I rooted my device? Yes.
Have I been using it for many purposes requiring root? Not quite, even though I will.
The reason why I required root was for certain things like using a custom ROM that would allow me to, coupled with the dock, use a 3G dongle and being able to have a SSH tunnel to make secure use of certain open networks.
But beyond that I don't have that much use to it.
Some people simply don't need to "play around", or access parts of their device that they don't need if they aren't rooted at all.
The TF is a functional device.
Android is a customizable and open OS.
Some people are plain happy with it, and root wouldn't give them anything more.

I'm glad to find this thread. I currently use a rooted hd2 and I have a tf101 and I have been unable to decide weather to root or not.
What are the benefits of rooting this device?
Sent from my HD2 using xda premium

it's the same benefit as you get with rooting your phone... wifikill is a great app. overclocking is a huge feature. I'm at 1.7GHz. stock is 1GHz.
root lets me have control of everything. I uninstalled gmail because it is useless to me, and instead I use the ICS email app.

Some people either just don't know about rooting and what it provides, while some people know the benefits but don't wish to seek them just because they don't want to take a risk, even a slim one.

All my phones are rooted but I have no desire to root my TF.
I don't have to remove anything off I don't use. If I didn't know it was required to own an Android device you had to root it. It must be something wrong with me.

Voodoo Control Plus on both my Asus TF101 and Nexus S is a tremendous enhancement that I couldn't replace. You have to really hear it once to fully understand. This is also the first app I have bought for the android OS.
For other tools (backups, logs, network tools...), root is really usefull, but for an audiophile, it's a necessity (the only alternative is another device in the pocket, as the Cowon J3 I still use, or a portable headphone amp).

All my devices have been rooted out of choice. I could just as easily be unrooted and still be happy. Current best reason I have is Titanium Backup; ).

Well, everything I own is rooted, but my new Galaxy Nexus lost ability to write to internal memory after two weeks. I'm sure it was an electronic failure, but since it was rooted you can't get it returned under warranty and you couldn't unroot it cause you couldn't write to the memory. Without the insurance that would been a $750 problem.

ive always rooted just because i like to tinker and like the results that can be had. i too must have voodoo its just night and day differences. i was stuck stock on the tf101 for a couple months waiting for razorclaw and didnt have too many complaints other than a little laggy and a few fc's here and there. then once rooted running a custom rom oc'ed and tweaked, there was just no going back . stoch honeycomb is fine but modded honeycomb is just slick. i am very thoughtful of bricking and dont go flashing every new thing out there cuz there isnt a way to unbrick my sbkv2 device, but i couldnt go back to stock it would be completely a downgrade.
of course this is all preference and opinion.

[Q] Pros to rooting right now?

Now, usually I'm a proponent of rooting anything and everything immediately, but I'm not so sure about this yet.
Without HC source, we have a very limited ROM set, and I don't really see much appeal to the ones available. I haven't seen any custom kernels for things like overclocking/undervolting, etc. either.
I know there are a few apps that require root, not really sure if the few are worth it at the moment. All the backup apps are kind of unnecessary if I won't be flashing ROMs anyway.
At this time, with official updates rolling out every few weeks, I'm just wondering if it's actually worth it to root at this point. Are there any major benefits to doing so right now? Killer apps, undervolt kernels, etc.?

well for 1. this shouldnt be posted in the dev forum, it should be in the general forum.
2. There is currently one OC kernel in the works, there are some roms already(Prime was faster than stock and IMO I know benchmark scores dont make a difference but stock gave me about 2500 in quadrant, prime gave me 3500), There's titanium backup, ad blocking, you can change boot animations, access the system and move things around, change config files, hmmm lets see what else.. other apps that require root which many are VERY useful. One I have is a reboot widget, it's a 1x1 button widget that you press and it reboots the transformer. That's VERY useful and requires root.. There are many positives to rooting besides just flashing custom roms.. Hope that helps
Also you need root if you want to run Ubuntu. I know that made me root asap

I agree, that's the immediate thing. Especially if you use another android device. I can restore my progress from angry birds on my phone to the tablet Also, you can uninstall some garbage. I have no idea why layar is a system app. Seems strange to have an augmented reality app on a wifi tablet. Also, I got rid of that press reader app. Obviously asus was paid to put it on their since it's about selling subscriptions to news sources.
The next thing is the ability to block ads by installing AdFree from the market.
Eventually I hope to see some custom kernels that will speed up this thing. (We need to get toastcfh a transformer.)
With Ice Cream not coming until Q4, that will likely mean we won't get any source until then either. However, that doesn't mean that we won't be able to see a few cool things come out of some rom developers.

What does prime 1.6 offer over stock 3.1 root?

I haven't flashed to any Tom's yet, but this seems to be the most popular. Why is that? I looked at the change log and I don't understand what I would be gaining I guess.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
same too me, I tried it over 3.1, what I experienced:
- browser little bit slower
- more SOD
- nothing real extra feature
I have to use a custom rom for a couple of reasons:
1) My stock rom is the Chinese verison, which means no google apps or google sync. Without google, it's just not android.
2) I need the Chinese input methods. I would normally switch to the USA stock rom, but it doesn't have Chinese input. Prime does/did, Chinese handwriting input is MIA, but I'll sure it will be taken care of.
I choose to use a custom rom for these reasons:
3) I don't like excess crap on my computer. I can modify a custom rom before I install it, mostly just removing apps that I will never use.
4) Root! I love freedom on my computer. Root lets me do things. All kinds of neat things: block ads, increase speed on sd card, delete/modify system apps and directories, and lots more. Look into it, it is fun.
5) Overclock. Prime doesn't have it, but you can add a kernal that does. I currently don't overclock, but as the Tegra 2 ages, i will overclock it. I'm specifically waiting for a rom with a high GPU overclock. There is one out there that currently does have a minor GPU overclock.
6) Clockwork Recovery. Backup, restore, switch roms, clear cache and more.
Why I choose Prime:
7) Dock battery meter in the taskbar.
8) Reboot/recovery options for power button.
After looking through the current selection of roms available, I choose Prime. But I keep my eye on revolver and Clemsyn.

Last time I flashed a Tom he punched me in the face...
One reason I haven't seen mentioned would also be themes, but it is still early in the game, there are few options. Custom Roms are generally just optimized better, though the Transformer doesn't have nearly the bloat some Android devices have making them almost essential...
Honestly once you learn, it is such an easy process that flashing different roms/kernels and trying them is the only real way to know what is best for you and your usage.

Then why are you worrying about ROMs? It's obvious you want some of that Baconcomb so just get it already.
Honestly, I don't know why people ever need to "beg" you to try something. If you're happy with what you got already, then be happy.

Wow...
He asked what was the difference between stock and Prime, and you went off in another direction. He wasn't asking to be "begged" into using Prime nor asking for others to convince him into using Prime at all.
Anyways, I know Prime has a few optimizations, but I don't know if it brings any substantial changes. There's a link to download the power/recovery mod, so I suppose it could be applied to any ROM including rooted stock.
One reason I would like to root my tf101 is to be able to use a USB dongle. But I am waiting for 3.2 to come out before since I just got my tf101.
The stock version is pretty good actually. No major complaints so far.
I hav ebeen using Prime for a while but ASUS stock version is definitely quite good. Even more so for lack of garbageware that so plagues the mobile phones...
Yea I guess I'm in the same camp. I haven't seen a compelling reason to move to a different ROM versus rooted stock. There are too many posts that seem to lead users to believe that a different ROM is the same as root. Remember you can root the stock ROM. The OP is asking what user experience enhancements make Prime (or any other ROM) compelling.
If you read changelog second post it will tell you exactly what's new in the ROM. Many changes are only useful for experienced linux users, but many others are useful for everyone. The nice thing about roms is that most of the things and tweaks are already done for you. If you don't need/care about those changes then there is no point for you to reflash.
Which BXX mod did you get ?
I'm curious because I'm thinking of picking up one of these today ( the guy at Orifice Depot tried to get me to buy an Iconia, but that thing doesn't have anywhere near the support the TF is getting...)....?
Manufacturer's (ASUS included) have to be very careful about their ROM releases so they are thoroughly tested and ready to release to the general public. Consequently they are slower to release updates (i.e. NVidia updates, etc.). Custom ROMs generally consolidate the best and latest releases from various manufacturer's into the most cuttest edge versions you can possibly be running. As you'll notice this can also mean more lock-ups and weird issues since you are getting just-available changes. So if you prefer max stability, stick with the manufacturer's updates. For many of us part of the fun of owning an Android tablet is the rapid pace that custom ROMs are put out and the interesting/quirky things they bring us.

I got a B60 TF and a B60 dock from my local OD this past weekend (Denver, CO).
Prime Vs Stock
Reason why I flashed the Prime Rom. With Prime and a netflix patch I'm able to stream netflix movie. Also now Adhoc connections work. I can Wifi tehther my TF101 with my Driod using the adhoc connection. I can now easily reboot into recovery prior to this going into recovery was a bit tricky. This was not possible even with HC 3.2. Also I don't have to worry about losing root becuase of an OTA update.
I am actually a flashaholic when it comes to flashing roms on my phone. But so far, I haven't come across any compelling reasons to flash custom roms on my transformer. The need to flash roms on phones offer benefits that are non existant on a tablet. For instance, one major reason to flash custom roms on phones is to enable free wifi tethering, which obviously does not apply here. Another reason, as stated above is to remove bloatware. The transformer doesn't really have that. And yet another reason is to be able to update to the latest Android version before the official release. Correct me if i'm wrong but when I looked, the 3.2 update came out officially before any transformer custom roms had it. There are a couple more minor customizations options that I'm not seeing yet being offered by the transformer roms. I am fully aware of the speed enhancements and optimizations that custom roms offer, but considering the custom roms for the transformer are still relatively new (no disrespect or discredit to the devs for their hard work), and considering that even still now, the rooting and flashing methods keep getting outdated and changed, it's too early in this ballgame for me to flash.
I've been lurking the forums here now for a month and finally pulled the trigger, my TF get's here monday.
I have yet to see any reason to flash a custom rom or even root at this point. I'll be rooting it just to say it's rooted and just for a couple of root only programs I have. The custom roms don't really bring anything to the table that this tablet doesn't have. it has the newest version of android with all the bells and whistles. I'm not going to be overclocking. I understand netflix is big for some people, but, from what I have read flashing the fix breaks some video playback. I'm ok to wait for the official netflix patch. A 32gb MicroSD and the 16gb on board space is plenty to store movies on for travel etc. I also have a server I run at home that will stream my entire movie,. TV, and music collections directly to me.
Having the best of the best and the most up to date version of android does have it's perks

[Q] Should I install a ROM on my Transformer?

Hey. I'm pretty new here, but I've been lurking for some time now. I picked up a Transformer at BB a week ago as a replacement to my iPad 2, and I'm very impressed. I have seen many ROMs available for this device, especially Revolver. I was wondering if it is worth rooting my TF and installing Revolver. Is it really that much of a difference? The only lag I experience is when I head to the stock browser, but on Dolphin for Pad I'm fine. I know there are probably hundreds of topics like this, but I haven't found any. I just wondered whether the advantages of Revolver are worth the root. Thanks!

Congrats i just baught one for myself late july as a B-Day present im loving it as well.
in regards to your question, it just depends. Keep in mind that Google has yet to relase the source code for Honeycomb so most roms are based on Gingerbread. Not that its a bad thing, but if your like me, i really do like the stock honeycomb interface.
Ofcoarse you could always just change roms and see how you like it, i myself am just going to wait for ICS in december/early2012
I've bought my Transformer a few days ago, and the first thing I've done is to root and flash a ROM on it.
My personal preference was to flash the latest PRIME build (which is HC3.2, the same as Revolver), as it seems like the dev seems to keep it up-to-date (even daily updates sometimes), and replies to most (if not all) issues people have... He also seems to work very hard by himself to get everything working and happy for everyone. I also have it over-clocked to 1.5GHz, and I've seen nothing but faster speeds on my Transformer and haven't noticed a big drop in battery life (I still have my Transformeron, after 30 hours of use).
The only downside is that you won't be able to receive any OTAs (Over The Air) updates straight from ASUS, but for something like PRIME, we get updates almost straight away as well through the dev that's developing it.
Before you think of rooting/romming, I suggest having a look at where you put the charger in your Transformer. There should be a black sticker that has the serial number. If it starts with B60, you're good to go. If it's B70 or above, you might want to research a bit more before trying to flash/rom (as there were some problems with the newer batch of Transformers with flashing).
But like anything, you can always keep a Titanium Backup of your apps/data and try different ROMs. (I'm thinking of trying out Revolver in a few days).
If you don't like it, you can always go back to stock anyway. Nothing big. It took me 10 minutes to flash from stock with NVFlash, so it's not really a hard process either.
if you don't know whether you should root or not, then you don't really need to root. you don't buying a hammer, then go looking for things to hammer. same with rooting.
that being said, the most generic reasons to root is 1) so you can do system backups, 2) overclocking, 3) use it as a hammer.
there are many specific reasons to root, but just as i can't list all the purposes of a hammer, i can't list all the reasons you would want to root.
it's hammer time.

He/she was talking about romming, not rooting. But sure, same sort of thing applies. It's really individual preferences.
Really, if you're absolutely happy with STOCK, then I suggest leaving it like that. It's sort of how there's a stock model of a car, and a tuned/modified model of the same car. One will get you from A to B faster (and maybe in more style some may argue), but both will get you to your destination in the end.
Thanks. I am eligible for the root, but I think I'll stay stock because I am not presently having any problems. All I can say is I am loving my Transformer!

[Q] Why should I root my tablet?

It seems like a basic question, but I have received no concrete answers. What's all the fuss about rooting your android device? I have a Galaxy Tab 10.1, and I'm looking hard for any excuse to root my tablet. Yes, I have checked google and these forums to no avail. My only luck are youtube videos of people's justifications being either:
1) Linux
2) "Don't you want control over your device? u_u"
With my Ps3 and Wii, hacking it opened many doors. My Wii especially -- I can (probably) put emulators, games, DVDs, music, and shows all for free and without discs but I haven't since it's illegal. The untapped potential is endless. My question(s):
What does a rooted device bring to the table?
Can I [theoretically] download emulators on my tablet for free via Linux despite being illegal and something I most certainly would never do despite my stance on piracy?
More specific -- what's the best thing that has ever happened as a result of your rooted device?
I really appreciate the help.
*Note, I do not have the Galaxy Tab, so talking in general*
Rooting gives you more control over your device. It's as simple as that. It has nothing to do with piracy, since you can sideload apps anyway.
Want to overclock making things run faster/smoother? Want to underclock so you can have extended battery life? Install a custom kernel. Don't like the way the default ROM (operating system) looks? Modify it, or install a whole new community-based ROM.
If you're happy with your device as-is, don't bother rooting it.
Examples of why I root:
HTC Inspire 4G-
*Underclocked as to improve battery life.
*Installed custom ROM as to improve functionality of the phone.
*Tether WiFi devices to 4G (H+).Kindle Fire-
*Install Google Market on the device.
I rooted my phone so I could install custom roms. This was a big improvement over my stock rom as far as functionality, performance and stability.
Rooting to me is about having full control over my phone and being able to make it what I want it to be instead of what the carrier thinks it should be.

This is the bottom line for me.
I'm not an automatic person, I am a hands on person. I appreciate making choices and going through the options. I work on my own cars, build my own computers. Root my own phone. Both my cars have manual transmissions and I work on my own house.
See the pattern, I like to do things myself, to be in control, and not have them chosen for me.
That's why I don't own anything from Apple.

what are the "must haves" for the tf101?

Hey guys I have never owned a tablet before, and finally picked up a tf101 with keyboard for a sweet price on CL.. and I want to give this tablet thing a real fair shot. That being said, I have tinkered around with android cellphones for a while, Im not a 100% noob but not as clever as most of you guys.
anyways I want to cut down on the amount of reading to do and boy there is a bunch , its the same song for every device/vehicle I buy, Purchase product, then spend the next couple months reading your brains off on a forum related to the product. (need to cut down on the reading... gf always on my case lol)
What are the most popular mods, accessories , settings (I will check into all the various kernals and Roms myself) apps. What are some life changing functions I can perform with the tf101 that would make me wish I got into tablets a lot sooner?
pretty much, I like the device and it looks real sleek and cool... just not sure what to do with it now , lol.
thanks in advance
Must have for me - Root - install custom rom - install kernel.
My PERI tool makes this a one-click from latest stock. I highly recommend you skip all the issues people have with stock and go straight to a great rom like ARHD, AOKP, or Megatron. :]
Other - counterstrike mobile, yes
This can be tough to answer because Android, unlike granny smith, has many things to read about and tinker with. I have had the tab for a while and tried numerous different roms and kernels. Each have slightly different responses and it depends on your tinkering desire.
I push my tab to the limits and try to do everything it wasn't originally designed for. Unfortunately....a lot of reading.
At any rate, my life changing functions were very quick access to RDP and VNC to home computers. I can also view my home security video cameras from the tab.
SSH to my phone is another plus for me.
I'm still contemplating attempting to install Linux on the tab as well.

I have it installed in an image loop and up and running fine on my B80 SBK2. It is slow and doesn't have any sound and I can't figure out what to do next in terms of getting a decent speed from it because there is pretty much no information out there other than getting it running. I know decent speed is possible because I had a WebTop phone.

haha, yeah I know what you mean... read read read, I should start hiring a forum assistant to scour message boards for me
anyways , I couldnt resist and already started reading and have rooted and installed rom... gonna try out some new kernals
but my main issue right now is ad-hoc.. Im trying to figure out if there is actually a real fix for it, but its all pretty confusing
I just made this thread regarding it

Tell me more on your tether issue. I tether the tf to my phone using built in tether function through the aopk rom. The tablet picks it up just fine. There is a lot of confusion between adhoc and infrastructure mode also but there are a lot of articles on the subject.
Define what you want to do and what way you want the data to flow would help out for a better answer I think.

hey tom, I think I have solved my problem, I applied the suplicant fix that was in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438297
and it has been working since, I havnt used it too much yet but so far so good
was that what you were going to suggest to me?
My phone is a rooted tmobile vibrant running tmobile web , I dont have a native tether app on this rom and I didnt want to mess with my phone much either. (been over a year since I installed a rom or even wiped, its getting too old for me to want to invest time into it)

I have heard this option many times but for quite some time ago when I was using Wifi tether for root users on the phone I had to select galaxy nexus cdma and netd master so the tablet would recognize.
Now things are becoming different such as the aopk rom and I use them on both the tf and my samsung fascinate. I stopped using the separate tether app since the built in function did all the same things.
I personally suggest a rom like this to make sure your phone and tablet can all peform the same functions.
Glad it worked for you though.
