Hello everyone, I want to ask if I rooted my phone will my original ROM stay or not ?? and if yes I can still update it like it's unrooted ??
Your original Rom will be untouched, if you install a custom recovery you will not be able to install the OTA updates, if you update you will probably loose your root
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
yes on both. but do make a backup if you every want to change it back to the original.
After you do S-OFF, flash the recovery (CWMR 5 or 4ext) and backup your current ROM and save it. You can also find the shipped rom over the internet
I remembered i proper jobbied myself when i first rooted my HTC Desire. I thought i'd get taken to jail lol.
If you don't like the idea after its done, you can always re-install the stock rom from these forums, and all will be well.
However, once you get into this stuff, you'll wonder why you didn't sooner

Hi, I am waiting for my HTC Sensation to arrive from eBay. New to android and have been reading about rooting. Just want to make sure I am getting this clear:
So, to root, I'll need to to the S-off thing with revolution, then clockwork recovery, then SU to actually root it right?
I am not sure whether I need to root it, but I am interested in unlocking it for SIM and I read there's a way to do it if the phone is rooted. Also, I probably don't need some of the T-mobile apps and want to delete it. However, do I have necessarily have to flash a custom ROM after I rooted it? Can I just use what came with the HTC?
However, if I do this, I guess I can't update through HTC/T-mobile anymore right? So I'll have to flash some ROM, but does it have some modify ROM, or can I use the ROM that's official from HTC?
Can someone please correct me if I misunderstood the process? And also, can I reverse all this if I decide I just want to use it the way it was shipped except simunlocked, and be able to update newer version of the OS from HTC.
Thanks
Sensation rooting
I was just like you about a month and half ago. im new to android aslo but i'll help you. first- your right about using the revolutionary method and installing clockwork and super user. as for unlocking it for a SIM you might need super cid check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
to remove some tmobile apps use titanium backup (it's in the market)
As for roms im using stock but it's rooted. but before you root please update to 2.3.4 because it really improve your phone but yes you would have to flash update roms after you root. but you can find the official one's here if you look for them as soon as they come out.
pretty much yes to your questions...even if you root you can stay with your stock rom and just use titanium backup to delete all the junk u dont want. Also, even if you cant get updates officially, devs here are nice enuf to post the newest stock roms for you to flash so dont worry. so i suggest you read these three threads to start off and have fun (just read directions very carefully)

Thanks for the quick reply. So I can only remove some t-mobile apps if it's rooted right? I was thinking of updating to the newest version before considering rooting. I think I will be kinda in the same situation as you....so when you say stock rooted rom...it's basically the same ROM as what t-mobile has with SENSE etc...but can be apply to a rooted phone without losing root right?
Finally, since you're not using any custom ROM and stuff... do u find it worthwhile rooting? what other advantage have you notice if you're using the stock ROM?
Thanks again!
rooting sensation
My rom is the same one that comes when you first get the phone. the only expectation is that it's updated to 2.3.4 instead of 2.3.3 and that it's rooted. When you root imagine like it's a window's pc and instead of using the guest account where stuff is limited, your now able to use the administrator account which lets you do anything.
As for advantages, i wanted to improve it's speed and battery life. the update helps but you'll find out that tmobile has alot of apps running in the background which slows it down and uses more battery and they also included useless app or two of the same kind of app. Right now im looking at other roms because im kinda tired of sense but i wish i could keep it's widgets.

Great. I think I'll just stick with the 2.3.4 firmware for now before considering flashing any custom ROMs etc.
So just so I am clear, I should update the unrooted phone to 2.3.4 when I get it. then I can perform the S-off, clockwork, superuser to get it rooted and just leave it as it is and use the existing ROM as it came with the phone. Until I need to update to a higher version, I will then flash a rooted version of whatever t-mobile came out with from here. Is that the deal?
Finally, what's superCID? Do I need that?
Thanks again.. you guys been a great help! I can't wait to play around with this when I get the phone this weekend
Rooting
Yep your correct....
As for super CID is something like a carrier unlock. This has something to do with updates i think. but by adding this you can flash any carrier's rom onto your phone. for example vodafone and orange are both 2 different europe phone companies and they both include different apps on their roms just like tmobile give there special apps. With super-CID you can put anyone of those carries rom on you phone regardless if it's a europe, usa, or asia sensation. but you don't need- i haven't put it on either.
I need to upgrade my wifes phone to the newest version. If i do a sidelod will I need to root the phone again? whats the easiest thing to do? Her phone is currently rooted with stock rom
Thnks
Install this one from recovery if she wants to stay completely stock. This is the ONLY true gingerbread stock 2.47 ROM out there. All others have modifications. It is already rooted. Backup before updating.

Sideload? You don't sideload a ROM when upgrading. Only when installing apps. And you shouldn't need to sideload anything anymore, especially if you are rooted.
Check the sticky that has the stock roms. Post four in Genes thread that I linked doesn't even have the bloat removed. I ran it for several weeks, so I know it is as stock rooted as you can get.

I keep forgetting about that 1.
Hi, all.
Want to prepare for ICS update....
It been a long time since I messed with the phone 9 month or so....LOL
Have S-OFF, CWM, rooted, but still on stock ROM, since I use my HD2.
I remember seeing somewhere a thread with instruction on how to switch back to stock recovery.... one of the requirements of flushing ICS OTA.
Now I searched everywhere and can't find it....
Would you be so kind to point me to it?
Thanks in advance!
Get it from any RUU and flash via fastboot
but you'll need an RUU anyway as you need to 100% stock to use the ota

I'd do a Nandroid Backup of the stock rom. I think this is the easiest way to restore stock rom if you need.

Shoot throw me in the same boot! I tried reading mikes guide for updating and I think its probably 100x simpler just doing the OTA and calling it a day. I'm not sure how much I'll personally be going back to this phone as I've crossed over to the SGSII now but seeing how HTC is putting out that limiting "one" phone I suspect this will be my last HTC phone for awhile.
I'm not dissing mikes ARHD rom either but I'm looking for the simplest of simplest instructions (other than OTA) like:
1. D/L (only) this one file/ROM and CWM/4EXT and flash.
2. ???
3. Profit.
the seller stated that the following "this phone is rooted (with stock rom) and has the "Team Win" custom recovery for those of you who like to flash custom roms, kernels, apps, whatever (if you don't know what either of ths mean, don't worry about it)... "
I have not rooted an htc one x because I'm afraid of losing some of the functions the stock rom has, So my question to you guys is, Can I restore this back to stock rom? I'm confused when he said he rooted it with stock rom.. and what is team win custom recovery? If I just wanted to restore the htc one x to its original factory state is that possible?
Its possible but the warranty on the phone is void as the bootloader is surely unlocked and will show relocked if you restore it. And restoring it could prove to be somewhat of a task as you'll need to determine the ruu for that phone.. What carrier did he purchase the phone from? There's a chance the Cid of the phone has been changed so you may have to change the Cid back before running an ruu. The rom he has loaded is probably the stock rom with root so I don't see any reason for it to run any differently.

what @exad said, plus there are a number of rooted stock roms available that are, well, stock, so I wouldn't worry too much about losing any features.
'Team Win custom recovery' is just a recovery 'program' you can use to flash custom roms and enhancements.

I thought if you purchase the phone from someone else the warranty is automatically void hence you're not the original owner. He purchased it from at&t, and as for the rooting, if it is indeed rooted with stock rom and no functions of the stock rom are lost,What's the purpose of stock rom with root? I thought the whole point of rooting your phone was so you get custom roms, but than again I'm no expert
here are his exact words
"Excellent condition ATT smartphone. I only used this phone for about a month and bought it brand new. Had a ballistics case on it since day 1 and the screens condition is flawless. Switched carries recently and of course need the money for a new phone. Also, this phone is rooted (with stock rom) and has the "Team Win" custom recovery for those of you who like to flash custom roms, kernels, apps, whatever (if you don't know what either of ths mean, don't worry about it)... "
Having root allows you to make changes to the system partition. Basically you can have the stock Rom but get rid of all the bloat and extra apps that AT&T includes which would otherwise be permanent

What functions? Root is only a change in permissions. It gives you access to the system files, that are normally not accessible. Root doesn't take away any functions.
Only exceptions, is that you sometimes can't get OTA firmware updates if you are rooted. Or installing them may result in the phone not booting properly. For most folks on here, this isn't a factor, since people what mod their phones and install custom ROMs typically don't want the OTAs anyway. Also, I think movies purchased from the Play store might not work if you are rooted. But I never buy/watch those, so I might not have the latest info there.
Now in your case, if you want to keep the phone bone stock, and still get OTA updates, you might just look for another purchase. Yes, the phone can be returned to near stock condition. But it requires you learning some things you don't already know:
- Download and install fastboot files
- Install HTC drivers or HTC sync (if not already installed)
- Use fastboot to relock the bootloader
- Download and run the appropriate RUU (ROM Update Utility) which will return your phone to near stock condition
If you are willing and interested in learning a few things about how the phone works, then it might still be a good purchase. Otherwise, if you just want to get a stock phone, and not have to mess with it, you might just look at buying elsewhere. There should be plenty of other decent options for unrooted One X phones.
Also note that I say the phone can be restored to "near" stock. The bootloader will only say RELOCKED, instead of LOCKED. Once the bootloader is unlocked, it can't be changed back to LOCKED, only RELOCKED. And this may have warranty implications.
Hello All,
I just want to know if there is a way at all to take complete backup of my android phone(HTC Desire V,ICS 4.0.3) without rooting. So far i don't know there is anything that can do my thing without rooting it. Now if i root and take a complete back up of my device, and then if i flash the stock ROM that is provided by HTC ,will then the phone will be restored to its locked state(unrooted) like now it is(I just want to tweak android and also don't want to void my warranty..).
Thanks in advance...
For 4.x devices there is a solution called "adb backup". This makes use of adb so you have to have the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) installed on your computer.

please look around for threads covering how to unroot after rooting your device.
this is especially useful if you want to return back to factory for repair etc.

Does ADB back up contains stock Kernel ?
Thank You rex28818 and tunjicool for looking into my concern. Yes, I have backed up my device using adb back up and backed up everything.
I want to know, does that back up also contain my source kernel too ?
Because i want my device's source kernel and it is important for me. Actually after taking back up using adb, i flashed HTC desire v official rooted zip file, then my blutooth and wifi was not working. then i look around on the internet and got the info that it could happen if kernel is not matched. Then I flashed one MIUI zip and its defined kernel, now my phone is working perfectly. But what if i want to go back, i will need my stock kernel too. can you please suggest where can i find it and something more...
Thanks in advance.
