Upgrading from 2.2.1 - HTC Inspire 4G

I need to upgrade my wifes phone to the newest version. If i do a sidelod will I need to root the phone again? whats the easiest thing to do? Her phone is currently rooted with stock rom
Thnks

Install this one from recovery if she wants to stay completely stock. This is the ONLY true gingerbread stock 2.47 ROM out there. All others have modifications. It is already rooted. Backup before updating.

Sideload? You don't sideload a ROM when upgrading. Only when installing apps. And you shouldn't need to sideload anything anymore, especially if you are rooted.

Check the sticky that has the stock roms. Post four in Genes thread that I linked doesn't even have the bloat removed. I ran it for several weeks, so I know it is as stock rooted as you can get.

I keep forgetting about that 1.

Noob alert - Help with customizing

Hello all,
I am fairly new to android, the Epic is my first android phone purchased on launch day. But I am very new to HTC and the EVO Shift. I just purchased one for my wife. I was wondering if someone could point me to some instructions, or just give me some, on how to best install clockwork and a rom. Her phone came with the latest update. Basically I would prefer to remain stock with just root and wireless tether. If anyone could help me accomplish this I would greatly appreciate it.
You are going to have to look at the temp root thread that is right here in this forum since she is on the newest update. You are kind of limited to what you can do unless a permanent root solution is found. Wireless tether should work. I think you may be able to remove or freeze the bloat using somethin like titanium but it will probably come back when you reboot. Can't use any custom roms yet either...

The only root that has been gained on the evo shift GB update is temproot no perm root yet so on a simple reboot you lose root, there is no recovery and no custom roms while temp rooted, there are a couple threads dedicated to this stuff here already

Yeah I knew there was only temp root but I saw some roms that were gingerbread with root. So I didn't understand how that was. I thought maybe if you could get clockwork installed with temp root you could still flash a rom. So are the gingerbread roms only for people on froyo? Can you downgrade to froyo and upgrade to the gingerbread rom? Also what do you use to flash roms. With samsung you have odin. What do you use on htc? I see mention of ruu but have seen nothing on how to use it or where to get it. Sorry for so many questions and being really new to this side of the pond.

Flashing clockworkMod while temp rooted isn't going to work, as soon as your phone tries to reboot you lose root. So you can't access Clockwork, which is how/where you flash ROMs. Currently there is no way to revert back to froyo, the new bootloaders do not recognize the froyo RUU. Basically until a perm root solution is found, temp root is the best you can do.
The ROMs that you see are for user that rooted while running froyo and never took the "official" update from HTC.
Did you buy your phone brand new or used? Go to settings about phone, software information.
If you have Android 2.2 you can root your phone. Otherwise you are screwed until HTC unlocks the bootloader.

He said brand new so that means it came with 2.3.3
OK I will wait patiently until perma root has been established. Thank you all for all of the information.

[Q] Downgrade from ICS?

Hey,
A week or two ago my T-mobile Nexus S received the ICS update. Although I was really excited at first, my phone's performance has deteriorated extremely fast, to the point that now, it's barely usable. I guess there's a reason why google pulled the update...
Anyhow, now I want to go back to the original gingerbread that came on the phone. Is there any way I can downgrade my phone back to gingerbread WITHOUT being rooted?
Thanks in advanced.
Hello
You have to unlock the bootloader, and then flash the stock gingerbread with fastboot

I think you pretty much need to root it, install a custom recovery, and flash one of the Gingerbread ROMs. You can unroot it and relock the bootloader if you want to after you flash the Gingerbread ROM.
Here's a link to guides and list of ROMs.

If I rooted my phone..

Hello everyone, I want to ask if I rooted my phone will my original ROM stay or not ?? and if yes I can still update it like it's unrooted ??
Your original Rom will be untouched, if you install a custom recovery you will not be able to install the OTA updates, if you update you will probably loose your root

yes on both. but do make a backup if you every want to change it back to the original.
After you do S-OFF, flash the recovery (CWMR 5 or 4ext) and backup your current ROM and save it. You can also find the shipped rom over the internet
I remembered i proper jobbied myself when i first rooted my HTC Desire. I thought i'd get taken to jail lol.
If you don't like the idea after its done, you can always re-install the stock rom from these forums, and all will be well.
However, once you get into this stuff, you'll wonder why you didn't sooner

Stock recovery.

Hi, all.
Want to prepare for ICS update....
It been a long time since I messed with the phone 9 month or so....LOL
Have S-OFF, CWM, rooted, but still on stock ROM, since I use my HD2.
I remember seeing somewhere a thread with instruction on how to switch back to stock recovery.... one of the requirements of flushing ICS OTA.
Now I searched everywhere and can't find it....
Would you be so kind to point me to it?
Thanks in advance!
Get it from any RUU and flash via fastboot
but you'll need an RUU anyway as you need to 100% stock to use the ota

I'd do a Nandroid Backup of the stock rom. I think this is the easiest way to restore stock rom if you need.

Shoot throw me in the same boot! I tried reading mikes guide for updating and I think its probably 100x simpler just doing the OTA and calling it a day. I'm not sure how much I'll personally be going back to this phone as I've crossed over to the SGSII now but seeing how HTC is putting out that limiting "one" phone I suspect this will be my last HTC phone for awhile.
I'm not dissing mikes ARHD rom either but I'm looking for the simplest of simplest instructions (other than OTA) like:
1. D/L (only) this one file/ROM and CWM/4EXT and flash.
2. ???
3. Profit.

Part rooted Gingerbread and OTA stock ICS update showing - questions

Have a Sim-Free Sensation XE.
I started rooting using the XDA guide linked from Androidforums. So far I have s-ff, and installed the backup when the handset decided there was the ICS update after a manual search said there wasnt.
I've read a thread on android forums about bricking if rooted then doing the OTA. Have I gone too far to OTA without bricking, or do I need to undo what I've done so far, and if so how do I reinstall the stock recovery?
Many thanks.
Any one able to advise me please?
Many thanks.

Just unroot using the option for permanent unroot in the SuperSU app.
Flash the stock recovery (Download here).
Then check for updates & install it.
Thanks.
So my only option is to complete the root?
