Unlocked ATRIX 2, currently on T-Mobile. Can I get 4g? - Motorola Atrix 2

My service bars are full but it has an "E" instead of 2g, 3g, or as I would prefer, 4g. Does anyone know if I will have to root my phone? Or what my limits are considering it is unlocked and working on T-Mobile?

Im pretty sure you're gonna be stuck with Edge as in the bands are different for 3G and Hspa

I have a friend that has an Atrix 4g unlocked on T-Mobile, and he has claimed to have gotten a 4g signal in one fringe area. He said that it was very spotty at best but it worked. I suspect it was some kind or roam signal he caught, or he was delusional. But Edge is definitely the best you will get since the frequencies are different. There is no fix for that, it is a hardware thing.

Oh wow... that really sucks. Thanks for the answers though. What if I root it or that still wouldn't be able to help? Edge is pretty ****ty service for such a nice phone, which is why I got it... plus I got a hell of a deal on it lol

I have heard the same as lilhaiti & JRW 28. Tmobile has different frequencies and the best you're gonna get with a non Tmobile phone is Edge. And as said prior, it's a hardware thing, not software.

Yes its unlocked

How did you unlock your atrix 2? ive tried dang near everything even a paid site.

T-Mobile will not get 4g. The hardware does not support the signal.band. sorry I had this issue on my hd2. I am att and I never got 3g. That's why I got this phone. Sorry to bring the bad news

Atrix 2 Unlocked No Signal
I have successfully removed the network lock on an Atrix 2 but gets absolutely no signal/emergency calls only with a T-Mobile sim. When I search for Network providers only AT&T shows. I was wondering if the radio was locked for some reason. Anyone else had this problem?
(For those of you who like to throw out the simplest ideas: Yes T-Mobile has service in the area. Yes: I have done a reset and chaged sims etc..)

That was my thought too. What plan are you on? I read that you can use their 30 dallar unlimited plan when you activate a new sim card.

I still have the hope that at some point after the BL gets unlocked we might get a hacked radio kernel of sorts that will allow use of t mobile bands..... The global 2 did something like this to allow use of t mobile...... One can hope.....

You can get 4G on T-Mobile, but only in certain areas as of right now. Pretty soon though, after T-Mobile starts utilizing the frequencies gained from the deal going through, you should start seeing more 4G in more places. But we have to wait and see if it actually happens.

PS. The 4G HSPA is fake 4G, it is just an enhanced 3G connection. So in reality Hspa = 3G
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium

I live in Vietnam, and I have a problem with Vinaphone network, added APN, but can only use HSPA (4G icon).
If I switch to GPRS (E icon), it says connected, but I cannot ping pass.
Other network (Viettel) is normal.

Even if the bootloader gets unlocked I still believe it would be a hardware issue not an issue of the radio software. They use the same 2g frequency so you can still get edge, but when it comes to 3g they operate on different frequencies. Some phones are made with the hardware for both frequencies though. My Samsung Vibrant (Tmobile phone) actually had the hardware to be used on AT&T 3g! The radio software was an issue unfortunately and it didn't switch well between 2g and 3g, tried all sorts of radio software but had no luck back then.
From what people have experienced by taking this phone to AT&T though, its looking like the Atrix 2 doesn't have the right hardware for the Tmobile 3g frequency.
I'm not one to say something is impossible though. Who knows.. maybe through the failed merger of AT&T and TMobile, TMobile was somehow able to gain access to some of AT&T's 3g towers (doubtful), since they did gain coverage through the breakup agreement after the merger failed.

In certain markets, they will get part of the frequency that AT&T uses for 4G. I forgot what bands exactly, but if you do a Google search, you should get more info.

I'm using unlocked Atrix 2 on T-Mobile. And I did get 4G signal when I was in downtown Bellevue, WA. I didn't believe so I ran few speedtests, best I got on Download was 1501kbps, and 1416kbps Upload, and it wasn't roaming. So yes, it works in few places right now.

how to get data on t-mobile?

after rooting my inspire, i tried putting my friends (t-mobile) SIM card into the phone... the phone worked, but there was no data, there was a "E" in the notification bar, but i do not know what that means...
any idea what the "E" means, and more importantly, how to get the data working??
E means edge...that is data..just really slow data.
Or you know what...I could be wrong, just going about what my vibrant shows.

E is Edge which is 2G and is really slow compared to 3G. If you have an AT&T Inspire you might have to change the data APNs so that it will work with T-Mobile.
Another thing is that AT&T's 3G and T-Mobile's 3G are different frequencies. So with an AT&T phone on T-Mobile, the best you can get is Edge. Same with T-Mobile phones on AT&T.
Hope this helped... a little.
U will have to input the apn settings. Further then that best u will get will be edge due to differing frequency that tmo uses.

Two posters above are correct, you need the correct apn settings for tmobile. Faced this issue taking my G1 onto At&t's network. http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=728949efd681db72&hl=en

No no you will not get anything more than 2g speeds,no matter what apn you use. Att and tmobile use different frequences. Unless the frequency bands match, then its a no go.

Verizon uses different 3G bands so it won't work.

Not true. Sprint has roaming contracts for a reason, and we have unlimited roaming.
I've never seen anyone's contract get terminated over it, then fine, make a trip to t mobile.

This is true. Sprint and Verizon offer network reciprocity in their roaming contracts. They will work, technically, on each others networks, but the ESN lock would disallow a change.
I run a Verizon PRL on my wifes Epic and it functions just fine on Verizon towers, but will always show as "roaming". We have not had our contract termed after almost four years with various phones, because it will still default to Sprint tower first.
There are guides on how to get a Verizon PRL loaded, so go give it a try. No harm in it if you dont **** up your profile...but even then, Sprint is pretty cool about reprovisioning.
Yes you can run a Verizon prl on a sprint phone. You can't flash a sprint phone to Verizon though. It just doesn't work. And that's what the op wanted to know.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Actually, it is possible to get a Sprint phone on Verizon, but it would involve changing of the MEID/ESN, which is illegal. More or less, you trick Verizon into thinking its one of their own phones. You could try your local metroPCS, Cricket, or US Cellular dealer as they might have the experience to do this. Also, try mobile-files.us.
Also, just to re-affirm, Verizon and Sprint share the same bands 3g and 1x.

Sprint will boot you for too much roaming. Also, your roaming is not unlimited. 200mb of data roaming is all you get. Also if you use more than half of your normal voice usage in roaming, sprint can terminate your contract. I have seen it happen, I work for sprint.
This may be different when you actually use a verizon prl as I don't know how that looks to sprint on their systems. I've never tracked usage while using a verizon prl.

I have read many forums and have flashed new PRLs with QPST but have never really got it to function properly. What PRLs are working for you guys (Verizon or hybrids) and what steps do you take after you write the PRL to your phone?
Exactly what does using Verizon's prl do? I'm a little new to all of this, but to my understanding, you can basically constantly roam on Verizon's 3g network? If so, does the phone struggle at all deciding which tower to connect to (thus hurting battery life)?

I'm using a hybrid PRL that will roam on sprint and runs normally on verizon. Where I work verizon is not available so I use sprint all day while I'm there but when I'm at home I am using Verizon, the speed difference is incredible in some places, I might get 100Kb down with sprint and 300Kb with verizon, or the opposite it doesn't always work out it your favor.
And to the guy saying I'm going to have my contract terminated, why are you being such a jackass? No they aren't going to terminate me for roaming 100megs a month. Not everyone abuses the system.
*THEY mostly CARE ABOUT DATA ROAMING! SO DONT USE DATA CRAZY!!
* WHEN YOU ROAM U USE YOUR ANYTIME MINUTES*
DON'T GO OVER 300 MB in data Monthly*
ALSO NOTE that if you abuse this u get a warning letter** Ur not just dropped..
Those are the basic rules. Ive long been using a HYBRID PRL!!! and works wonders...For those who need it
Can you guys point me to where I can find the Sprint/Verizon hybrid PRL please?

Verizon and Sprint have the same frequencies. The only thing preventing you from activating the phone on Verizon would be the ESN not in their database; they will only activate phones in their database.
I know you can definitely activate it on MetroPCS/Cricket. If you just have no signal in certain areas and want to force roaming, download Roam Control. I think it's like $4 but it works beautifully and the dev even just added a homescreen widget so you don't even have to go through the app.

G2x supposedly does NOT contain AT$T 3G bands as previously advertised. As for home coverage, T-Mo is supposed to be launching an in-home signal booster for free (with 2-yr contract, probably doesn't effect upgrade timeline but haven't verified that) pretty soon. I think within the next week.

My understanding is the booster needs to be connected to your broadband internet router to work. So you will be using your internet bandwidth to use mobile voice and data. What a scam...
And any one visiting you (or you neighbor) with a t-mobile connection will use that signal (your internet) and pay t-mobile for that.

Hopefully your "source" isn't an otherwise reputable source of information because you (they) couldn't be more wrong. I have been a part of the beta for these boosters for the past 6 months. All it does is take a weak 3G signal (which means you must get 3G somewhere in your house for this to work) and amplifies it throughout your house. In my case in an upstairs window I got a weak 3G signal so I put the receiver in the window and the transmitter in my living room. Now I get between 1 and 6mbps down throughout my entire house. There is not even a way to connect this thing to a home internet router. I don't even have home internet.
I'd be curious to know where you heard this.
Oh and the G2x does not work on AT&T 3G bands. I have been in several states with no T-Mobile coverage and have used AT&T instead, but only on Edge.

I didn't intend to sound overtly defensive, I just don't like when people start using the "scam" word when this couldn't be further from a scam. This device kicks ass and tmo wants to give it out for free in exchange for people's business. This device is normally $500 so this program is great. Hopefully they will also offer the equipment at full retail price for those uncomfortable signing or extending a contract.

Lots of countries are messed up. We just finally got all the carriers providing 3G here in Thailand. Two of them are providing 3G on 850Mhz (DTAC and TrueMove), one is on 900Mhz and the other is on 2100Mhz. A big grab bag. An AT&T phone will get 3G on two of them. Some TMO phones get 3G on the other one. But all phones get it on the 2100 carrier. I am using my G2X on 2100Mhz here (TOT3G) and my Nexus One on 900Mhz (AIS). So the USA isn't the only country with non-unified 3G bands.

Galaxy S II Skyrocket on Tmobile 3g?

Hi, I have been reading some posts in the Radio thread reporting that they are using the T-mobile Modem. It was unclear whether they had it working on the T-mobile network or just using the modem on the ATT network.
Is there anyone here using the Galaxy S II Skyrocket on T-mobiles 1700Mhz AWS 3G band and getting internet and sms and everything no problem?
I just want to make sure before I go out and purchase one for a lot of money and not have it working.
Yup I believe that the Skyrocket and the TMO SII are the same phone or at least have the same radio
Yes, you can use the t-mobile modem on the skyrocket and connect to t-mobile 3g. There are people on xda that have done this and confirmed working. The modem chipsets are different though.
There is one thing though. The skyrocket modem (mdm9200) supports 700/1700/2100 on LTE which is the same frequency that t-mobile uses on 3G. My concern is that although it will work since it is the same frequency, the skyrocket modem uses the 700/1700 band for LTE and not 3G, but 2100 for 3G and LTE. The t-mobile sgs2 uses the mdm8220 which supports 1700/2100 for 3G. I don't know enough about the particular power/design differences to say if this is a safe thing to do for extended periods of time. I heard of a few people having problems with their modems after flashing tmob modem on their skyrocket. Don't know if it's connected to the hardware differences.. just a caution. Make sure you have warranty or insurance coverage before you try
I'm going to buy the phone secondhand and thus I will not have warranty or any return policy hence I am worried. I wanted to make sure that it works before I go out and purchase the phone.
Were the people having problems the people who were still on the ATT network? I plan on using the phone strictly on the T-mobile network which I hear is also going to be putting out 1900Mhz 3G in certain markets due to the failed ATT merger and I happen to be in one of those large markets.
I have seen this question more than once but never an answer to why...with the two phones being nearly identical, what is the draw causing some tmo users to want the 727 over the 989?

Around here it is cheaper and also I hope that the phone will work with non-smartphone data plans on T-mobile because T-mobile locks out their own smartphones to certain data plans.
As I've said, others have reported it to be working. However, I don't think there are enough people doing this to give a clear idea if the tmob modem is having any adverse effects on the skyrocket modem. Maybe open a poll thread to get a better idea?

IT HAS TO RUN A TMOBILE SGS II MODEM. The radio has the capability, but the modem.bin for the SR doesn't activate AWS/2100. Flashing a T-Mobile modem will fix that though.

Just beware of the sbl.bin (Boot Loader). Do NOT flash the sbl for the Hercules on the Skyrocket. Everything else appears to function the same.
(I've been researching if I should get a Skyrocket or Hercules)
So just flash a tmo rom?

[Q] Samsung Infuse 4G At&t HSPA+ data working on T-mobile network.

Hey,
I was recently using my phone that i got a couple days ago ( Bought it unlocked at my local Electronics store ) and i popped in my T-mobile sim card and after 1 day I looked at my status bar, I had H+ on the top right corner. I tested it out on my browser ( I was at a park while this happened ) and the data worked fast like on a T-mobile 4g phone. But it later went away after a couple minutes. I was trying to take a picture with my other phone to prove that it wasnt photoshopped or anything but i was too late. Can someone help me on this situation? Is there a way i can keep it at HSPA+? Please don't take me as a cellular noob i repair phones and setup for plenty of people.
Thanks.
That could be some bizarre glitch.
The AT&T Samsung Infuse should not have the hardware to support T Mobile HSPA+

Yeah, thats what i was curious about. I was happy for the moment being, but when it went away i just had to go with it since its supposed to be at edge speeds.

I'm actually really weirded out by the fact that it actually worked at all for a period of time, and that you got speeds at that speed. So the question is, what exactly happened?
One may never know

Basically, I was in a neighborhood next to the park ( thats the way i get there ) and i was looking at my phone and saw my H+ sign up there so I got pretty excited and tested it out and it was indeed HSPA+. I will go back to the same neighborhood and check again. Also it happened while i was at the gym a couple hours before. Weird stuff.
Probably a bug, sometimes mine thinks it doesnt have a data connection when it actually does, or displays E (for edge) when its actually on 3g
If you catch it happening again do a speedtest - I doubt it will be 4G speeds
I would assume you were seeing an area where T-Mobile has 'refarmed' their HSPA+ network onto the 1900MHz band, which according to Samsung is possible with the hardware.:good:
Refarming makes a lot of sense. And I will definitely speed test it for sure.
