Unlocking my G2x. - T-Mobile LG G2x

I am thinking very seriously about unlocking my G2x an going to AT&T because my service sucks big time where I live at. I don't get service in my house an when I go outside it takes about 5 minutes to get a signal.....what's everyone thoughts.....I've already talked to AT&T an Tmobile and have my unlock code already

I assume you've already verified that it's possible to get a decent signal on AT&T there?

AT&T gets great signal there an a lot more places also.....an its atleast 3g there about to be 4g an with tmobile I've only got 2g there

Good luck on getting Att 3g on G2x.....

Why you say that for?

G2x supposedly does NOT contain AT$T 3G bands as previously advertised. As for home coverage, T-Mo is supposed to be launching an in-home signal booster for free (with 2-yr contract, probably doesn't effect upgrade timeline but haven't verified that) pretty soon. I think within the next week.

My understanding is the booster needs to be connected to your broadband internet router to work. So you will be using your internet bandwidth to use mobile voice and data. What a scam...
And any one visiting you (or you neighbor) with a t-mobile connection will use that signal (your internet) and pay t-mobile for that.

Hopefully your "source" isn't an otherwise reputable source of information because you (they) couldn't be more wrong. I have been a part of the beta for these boosters for the past 6 months. All it does is take a weak 3G signal (which means you must get 3G somewhere in your house for this to work) and amplifies it throughout your house. In my case in an upstairs window I got a weak 3G signal so I put the receiver in the window and the transmitter in my living room. Now I get between 1 and 6mbps down throughout my entire house. There is not even a way to connect this thing to a home internet router. I don't even have home internet.
I'd be curious to know where you heard this.
Oh and the G2x does not work on AT&T 3G bands. I have been in several states with no T-Mobile coverage and have used AT&T instead, but only on Edge.

I did not say I heard this from someone. I said its my understanding, and that was based on the similar booster I saw from Sprint. If t-mobile is implementing it in a different way, than i am sorry for my ignorance.

I didn't intend to sound overtly defensive, I just don't like when people start using the "scam" word when this couldn't be further from a scam. This device kicks ass and tmo wants to give it out for free in exchange for people's business. This device is normally $500 so this program is great. Hopefully they will also offer the equipment at full retail price for those uncomfortable signing or extending a contract.

Another example of totally failed mobile network infrastructure buuldout here. How does the whole world agrees on similar frequencies and we can't have carriers on the same frequency in one country. Yeah, yeah... I know about spectrum availability and yada yada but this just shows our lack of foresight and another example of our national handicap of wanting to be different from everyone else. Lots of countries are messed up. We just finally got all the carriers providing 3G here in Thailand. Two of them are providing 3G on 850Mhz (DTAC and TrueMove), one is on 900Mhz and the other is on 2100Mhz. A big grab bag. An AT&T phone will get 3G on two of them. Some TMO phones get 3G on the other one. But all phones get it on the 2100 carrier. I am using my G2X on 2100Mhz here (TOT3G) and my Nexus One on 900Mhz (AIS). So the USA isn't the only country with non-unified 3G bands.

What do u mean by this.....the atrix...I looked at that phone also and the infuse too

Actually, ever since I jumped the CS ship and went to AT&T I couldn't be happier. Their Signal strength kicks the $hit outta CS. I got a BEST of -86dbm on CS, on AT&T I've gotten down to -56dbm... Signal consistantly is better than CS everywhere I go. I travel all over the state, and have way better coverage. I've had zero dropped calls so far, and zero data "time outs"... Data is waaaaaaaaay faster too. Getting 3-5+Mbps Down on AT&T vs. 800Kbps-1.1Mbps Down on CS. Well that is if the connection didn't time out. Lol. AT&T is also Buying out CS ETF's up to $200 right now. Only downfall I've seen so far are the prices of the plans, but ya gotta pay to play. Also nice to be able to pop your Sim card in whatever phone you wanna run that day. ha
Thanks for your feedback. I think the only problem I will encounter is a big ass deposit. Sally Mae shows up on my credit never fails lol

That blows... Since you're traveling across several states, having a Nationwide Carrier will be more beneficial.. Especially if you're outta town and break or lose your phone. I'm sure they'll have a store fairly close. Sucks when you're in Florida, and Kill your CS phone. Screwed until you get back to MS.. Been there. lol

Yeah, but T-mobile's data svc around MS blows as of now. 2G Damn near EVERYWHERE I went.. very spotty 3G. Had a G2X and a G2. Great phones, just wish they had the svc to match around here because they do have awesome plans. We'll see what happens with the merger. Would be beneficial for both companies, but they would have the GSM market cornered..

[Q] NO HSPA+/Only EDGE on Simple Mobile

So I bought a Samsung Infuse off Craigslist. I love it, it's awesome. I use the Simple Mobile $60/m plan. I previously had a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant before the Infuse. I used to run CM7 but used Bionix 1.31 as my ROM on my Vibrant. So I'm familiar with the ends and outs of this technology.
The Situation: Samsung Infuse running latest "unofficial build" CM7, flawless performance. After doing much research as to APN settings on Google and XDA I found that the internet is wrong with the APN settings for HSPA+ on a HSPA+ capable phones. I called Simple Mobile yesterday and we did an OTA (she spoke I listened) configuration of the APN and it's full of IP addresses nao. She said that will allow me to access the "4G" network. The thing is, it says "E" for EDGE at the top for my signal....consistently.
The Problem: The EDGE never changes, also according to various speedtest's I can't EVER break .50kbs DL speed off of WiFi.
So I tried switching out various modems that we're available to me for the Infuse via the CWM flashable's. I've seen NO IMPROVEMENT on data speeds after each modem.
So what exactly is the issue: Am I doing something wrong via XDA material? Or am I just ****ed on HSPA+/4G speeds?

You are right and WRONG all at the same time...fascinating isn't it!
Simple Mobile does in FACT use T-Mobile Towers, however; before I rocked the Infuse I've seen other speeds that read 3G/H. The Simple Mobile Network offers 4G/HSPA+ with the $60/m plan that I am currently on.
So with that information, how would you explain that a phone that is HSPA+ capable and programmed correctly that sits on the EDGE network and still doesn't break .50kbs DL speed??
I spoke with customer service at Simple Mobile and several other Simple Mobile retailers that told me up one wall and down the other that the Samsung Infuse programmed correctly should FLY without WiFi, this phone should act like the rocket it claims to be with data on the network.
Instead it is slow, sux and is worthless without WiFi.
So how come you tell me one thing, and several people that work for the Network and people that are affiliated with it tell me another?

I own a business; I know about selling. But according to my research, your a little or alot off; I just can't exactly prove it.
I know that AT&T offers 4Gish speeds (true LTE in like 2 cities in TX), and that T-Mobile offers 3.5+G-4Gish speeds.
I also understand the concept of up-selling, however that scenario does not apply with my current plan and situation.
Has it, or has it NOT been documented ANYWHERE that an HSPA+ capable phone on the $60/m Simple Mobile plan achieved true or realistic data DL speeds off WiFi?
I am no tech or anywhere educated in this topic. But why are you comparing network speeds with your wifi? Or am I missing something here?

I'm not using WiFi as a comparison, just as another option for higher DL speeds. Off WiFi I've seen snails crawl faster than my data can move.
I just want to know why I can't get anything better than **** with this great phone and supposedly "reasonably-good" network.

The phone was NETWORK LOCKED when I bought it, so I guess I suppose I'm glad you we'rent with my when I bought it lol.
I'll take into mild consideration that a multitude of people may not be aware of alternate existing networks.
The T-Mobile phone I had before licked ****ing sac, my buddy has a Captivate that OVER-SHINED my Vibrant any day of the week - So No, I won't buy a phone from a company that's supposedly being bought out BY AT&T.
From previous quotes: It seems that we are implying that ONLY a T-MOBILE BRAND PHONE can access the 4Gish HSPA+ speeds that Simple Mobile network (that uses T-Mobile towers) and not an AT&T branded phone.
Yes, it's true....the above DOES in fact sound stupid when I put it on paper. AT&T and T-Mobile use the same towers and Simple Mobile/Metro PCS (some other un-explained networks) use the SAME towers.
So how is it, according to posters: That replacing AT&T phone with T-Mobile garbage will allow me to acquire the DL speeds that reference HSPA+/4G speeds. AND NOT, under any circumstances is it possible for an AT&T phone that uses the same towers to get the same outcome?
OK, the last part really does sound stupid, I feel like I'm arguing with a mockingbird. Anyone else have any further to offer?

Actually I re-read this statement. AT&T don't use the same bands, something about T-Mobile uses 850 and AT&T uses 1700.
Would changing the band selection make a difference? How to if possible?
I think u can only change the APN, not the band, the band is hardware, not software. I had the same problem trying to use my Desire HD on tmobile and couldnt get anything more than edge. Will straight talk sim work on not "straight talk phones"?
Which cheapest phone of straight talk I have to buy to get their SIM-card?
I know they selling GSM and CDMA phones and don't want to buy wrong one.
Flat Out answer only the 2G or EDGE bands in the phone are compatible with ATT networks the other bands are different so if you want bettter speeds get att or use wi-fi because edge is all you will ever get no matter what you do to the APN
like on the previous post mentioned, i think most of the att phones doesn't have the radio that is capable of receiving the 3g/4g frequencies tmobile use. i could be wrong, but i think is a hardware problem rather than a setting you can change.
Simple mobile is Tmobile, 3g may never work.
Strait talk is a variety of carriers, depends on,the specific phone. The only known phones that work from the att network and have a Sim that works in other phones are the expensive Nokia smart phones. But those also have a Tmobile variant, I don't know how to tell the difference without looking at the Sim.
There is also consumer cellular, apparently that,is att but I don't know if it's full talk text and Web or how it's billed.

Consumer Cellular is VERY "no-frills" - it's only for VERY light users.
There is no AT&T phone that I know of that supports the 1700 MHz band required for T-Mobile 3G.
The only phone I know of that has pentaband HSPA+ (works on both AT&T and T-Mobile) is the Galaxy Nexus.
When I programmed my HTC Evo 3D i saw various optinos for cdma/eg/4g in CDMA Workshop & QPST Service Programming, what I saw was diferent types of bands and freqz, you might wana check out a phone's specs of tmobile and then check if those specs (frqz & bands) match with the one set on your device...
For example
The Vocoder settings
band prefferences :
band class 0/1/2/3/4/5/ sys a/b/
GSM DSC 1800
GSM extended 900
Etc etc.... check with the device's password on it's profiles and realms (settings I can view on my evo using ##data# )
I can confirm that the issue is with the phones. I just ran a test using my simple mobile card on an AT&T Infuse vs Tmobile Vibrant 4G.
AT&T Infuse
Edge connection with 50kps max
Tmobile Vibrant 4G
3G connection with 240kps max
I will be going to staright talk at the end on this billing cycle.

Cel-fi @ t-mobil to increase cell signal.

I got a text from T-MOBIL last week telling me my accounts are eligible for a wireless cellular repeater to call T-MOBIL for more info.
I forgot about the text and today a 800 number called me. I was wondering who it was it was T-MOBIL, When I called back.
I guess I have another Christmas present coming.
I hope this fixes my problems. I posts a review.
I be using two different phone's:
1. LG G2X P999
2. SAMSUNG GALAXY S
Cel-Fi is a device, similar to a cellular repeater, designed to eliminate in-building dead zones and improve indoor mobile phone reception.
Created by Nextivity, Inc., the Cel-Fi systems are designed with smart antenna technology to seek out the best available signal to maximize signal gain to phone user. The
Cel-Fi consists of two wireless devices, a Window Unit and Coverage Unit that work jointly to increase 3G and 4G mobile broadband connectivity throughout the building. The window unit receives the signal and relays it to the receiver, which converts it and amplifies it.
Trialed for a period of time in both the US and UK by T-Mobile. Approved in UK by T-Mobile and Orange in 2011. Cel-Fi systems are comparable to mobile phone repeaters and femtocell technology.
I HOPE THIS IS IN THE RIGHT FOURM.

Just ordered mine as signal issues have been ongoing for 8 months or so. The requirements as I was told are as follows:
1. You must have only ONE BAR of signal at your home.
2. You must live in either a Residental home OR an apartment complex.
3. Have a cell plan of $65.00 or more per month.
4. They Charge for shipping ( ground - $6.51 Expedite $20.00) must be paid immedialty on a credit card.
5.They EXTENDED your contract for 2 yrs. ( I had done so 2 months prior , so they extended it for 2 more months)
6. You have 20 days to decide if the unit works for you, or you must return.
7. If you leave t-Mobile, you must return the device or they will charge $500.00 for it.
Anyone wanting the device should go directly to " specialized care dept" not customer service.
Specialized care Dept, who actually handles the devices. I was told they do NOT have then in the stores. really hoping it helps my signal issues, as I'm concerened about T-Mobile and the issues they have us all experencing . Once I receive the unit and try it out, I'll report back on how good/bad it is. Good luck out there, Hoping the next year comes with much Improvements on thier behalf... And I be alot happier next year!!!

What frequency band does the Window unit use to talk to the Coverage unit?
If it's 2.4GHz, it could seriously interfere with wifi internet in your home...is that the case?

What frequency is used to communicate between the two boxes?
Cel-Fi uses channels from both the UNII-1 (either 5.15-5.25 GHz OR 5.25-5.35GHz) and the UNII-2 block (5.47-5.725 GHz) to communicate between the Window Unit and the Coverage Unit.

Everyone in the basement of my building gets very little service. I think my landlord would be willing to buy a booster to help the situation. Is there such a thing?

I do recall when I worked with T-Mobile that they would sometimes work deals with landlords to provide service to apartment or business buildings. It would need to be the person who owns the property who contacts them, and they have a specific number to contact... I just don't remember what it is right now. It's the same department that handles leasing space for towers, but they also dealt with large buildings. A device like this may not fall under that department, but I'm sure if your landlord contacted T-Mobile's customer relations (not just customer service) then someone would be willing to discuss it.
Well it's only 8 people in the basement, and not all on T-mo so it sounds like they'll just have to stick with wifi calling... or hangin' their head out the window.
I have had this since December.
Here's what's new.
I get 4 bars of signal in my house, garage and outside in my yard.
Single story house.
Exceed all my need very happy to not miss calls any calls or text messages. No more WI-FI calling for me was very unreliable compared to this option.

I'd love to get this, but I'm not really trying to extend my contract with T-Mobile.

I got rid of my contracts and switched to the walmart prepaid version of tmobile (family mobile). 55$ a month 8gb of data is nice for a single line. It uses tmobile towers and service, the only drawback I have found is you cant use google voice or call forwarding other then that, it works well for me.
If you live in an area that gets poor signal or if your house blocks alot of the signal you can call them and complain constantly, and they will eventually give you a signal booster. Especially if you have been on tmobile for a while.
You can buy it for $500.00 and no contract. LOL

No google voice? How do they manage to block that?

So I can convince them to give me the signal booster without extending my contract? My family has been with T-Mobile since 2004? I think... Haha. Also, does it just boost signal for calling, or does it boost HSPA+ and such?
In my case they had on file that we call all the time for no service.
Read my first two post a lot of info there.
I post some screen shots.
Hope that helps.

Unlocked ATRIX 2, currently on T-Mobile. Can I get 4g?

My service bars are full but it has an "E" instead of 2g, 3g, or as I would prefer, 4g. Does anyone know if I will have to root my phone? Or what my limits are considering it is unlocked and working on T-Mobile?

Im pretty sure you're gonna be stuck with Edge as in the bands are different for 3G and Hspa
I have a friend that has an Atrix 4g unlocked on T-Mobile, and he has claimed to have gotten a 4g signal in one fringe area. He said that it was very spotty at best but it worked. I suspect it was some kind or roam signal he caught, or he was delusional. But Edge is definitely the best you will get since the frequencies are different. There is no fix for that, it is a hardware thing.
Oh wow... that really sucks. Thanks for the answers though. What if I root it or that still wouldn't be able to help? Edge is pretty ****ty service for such a nice phone, which is why I got it... plus I got a hell of a deal on it lol

I have heard the same as lilhaiti & JRW 28. Tmobile has different frequencies and the best you're gonna get with a non Tmobile phone is Edge. And as said prior, it's a hardware thing, not software.
Yes its unlocked

How did you unlock your atrix 2? ive tried dang near everything even a paid site.
T-Mobile will not get 4g. The hardware does not support the signal.band. sorry I had this issue on my hd2. I am att and I never got 3g. That's why I got this phone. Sorry to bring the bad news

Atrix 2 Unlocked No Signal
I have successfully removed the network lock on an Atrix 2 but gets absolutely no signal/emergency calls only with a T-Mobile sim. When I search for Network providers only AT&T shows. I was wondering if the radio was locked for some reason. Anyone else had this problem?
(For those of you who like to throw out the simplest ideas: Yes T-Mobile has service in the area. Yes: I have done a reset and chaged sims etc..)

That was my thought too. What plan are you on? I read that you can use their 30 dallar unlimited plan when you activate a new sim card.
I still have the hope that at some point after the BL gets unlocked we might get a hacked radio kernel of sorts that will allow use of t mobile bands..... The global 2 did something like this to allow use of t mobile...... One can hope.....

You can get 4G on T-Mobile, but only in certain areas as of right now. Pretty soon though, after T-Mobile starts utilizing the frequencies gained from the deal going through, you should start seeing more 4G in more places. But we have to wait and see if it actually happens.

PS. The 4G HSPA is fake 4G, it is just an enhanced 3G connection. So in reality Hspa = 3G

I live in Vietnam, and I have a problem with Vinaphone network, added APN, but can only use HSPA (4G icon).
If I switch to GPRS (E icon), it says connected, but I cannot ping pass.
Other network (Viettel) is normal.
Even if the bootloader gets unlocked I still believe it would be a hardware issue not an issue of the radio software. They use the same 2g frequency so you can still get edge, but when it comes to 3g they operate on different frequencies. Some phones are made with the hardware for both frequencies though. My Samsung Vibrant (Tmobile phone) actually had the hardware to be used on AT&T 3g! The radio software was an issue unfortunately and it didn't switch well between 2g and 3g, tried all sorts of radio software but had no luck back then.
From what people have experienced by taking this phone to AT&T though, its looking like the Atrix 2 doesn't have the right hardware for the Tmobile 3g frequency.
I'm not one to say something is impossible though. Who knows.. maybe through the failed merger of AT&T and TMobile, TMobile was somehow able to gain access to some of AT&T's 3g towers (doubtful), since they did gain coverage through the breakup agreement after the merger failed.

In certain markets, they will get part of the frequency that AT&T uses for 4G. I forgot what bands exactly, but if you do a Google search, you should get more info.

I'm using unlocked Atrix 2 on T-Mobile. And I did get 4G signal when I was in downtown Bellevue, WA. I didn't believe so I ran few speedtests, best I got on Download was 1501kbps, and 1416kbps Upload, and it wasn't roaming. So yes, it works in few places right now.

ABOUT T Mobile

Hello all...
Is T Mobile the worst cell phone carrier of the country, EE.UU?
I have no signal most of the day!
My device is factory with 5.1.1 LYZ28E. Build Number... Unroot. But It does not work, most of time, I cannot send text message, sometimes I cannot make phone call, and data signal is the big problem, is the worst of the universe!
Does anyone have the same problem, anyone know about it, please?
I am very disappointed with this carrier!

If it's not working for you, switch carrier. Service is location dependent, so what may be the worst provider for you could easily be the best experience for someone else in a different location. TMobile, for me, is by far the best service and I get LTE pretty much everywhere in Colorado.

:good:
(I'm out of thanks)
I'm in the DC area and have phones on T-Mobile (my Nexus 6) and AT&T (my Nexus 5, formerly on T-Mobile). The signal quality and reliability of T-Mobile service is far superior to the service on AT&T. If it weren't for the 18% discount I get from AT&T I would have left them long ago.
The valley, here in Phoenix is horrible!

What exactly does this thread have to do with Nexus 6?
As the other folks suggested, switch carriers if you aren't happy with T-mo.
Check their coverage maps to see what coverage you should expect. Based on that, either open a network ticket with T-mo or a switch carriers.

Tmobile just has signal problems in general due to the lack of 'low' band.
I was curious recently and found out that ATT/Verizon occupy the 850mhz space, and tmobile occupied the 1900mhz on gsm.
TL;DR; switch carriers or try and wait it out to next year. Tmobile is trying an aggressive expansion. They are aiming to have ATT-like coverage by EOY, but I doubt it.

Looks like it has been moved over to the general forums now.

T-Mobile normally operates on two bands: AWS-1 (1700/2100), and PCS (1900).
In some areas, they have Band 12 (700 MHz Block A) spectrum as well, and they're aggressively rolling it out wherever they don't have to worry about TV stations broadcasting on channel 51. See here for maps and more information, including compatible devices. Chicago won't get that, though, since AT&T got the 700A block when they snapped up Cricket.
