tough to say....probably depends on the tech that gets to look at it. Call HTC, see what they'll make you do to get a replacement and go from there...

should have done that but I told them the truth,they said to call them with the serial number,If they refuse to fix it then I will tell them about the weak ass wifi or something

Even if u say somethimg is wrong w it they will still charge u the out of warranty fee.....they will read a long script asking u if there's any missing parts or liquid damage if u say no and have them send u a replacement phone u are agreeing to the out of warranty fee.....u will see it on ur bill and its not refundable!

The only way you will be able to get a replacement from htc is if they lost your phone. the repair center lost my vodafone branded sensation. so htc are now sending out a brand new unbranded sensation to replace it.

Don't know if someone posted this before but:
As the title says, do NOT use the stock unlock method if you ever think you'll need a warranty replacement, they store your serial number after using the tool, this means that they know your warranty is voided. By using the official tool you're basically guaranteeing you won't be able to get a warranty replacement.

This is OLD news my friend. If you read the HTC website terms before using it (which you SHOULD be doing), you will see it states that your warranty is effected.

The problem with this is how does rooting alone void your warranty. Say you just want an unlocked phone for the sake of having an unlocked phone. That alone shouldn't void your warranty.

LOL. Please. As if HTC shouldn't do anything to your warranty simply because you "may" want to unlock it just to unlock it. They should be cool with it just because maybe .1% of people do it just to do it.
I had my turbocharged car chipped just to, you know, do it. Not because I want to drive fast or anything.

I've done repairs on my Nexus One (dust) with an unlocked bootloader. Not at first but that's because i sent it in with CM. They sent it back to me and I restored it to stock and they fixed it.
If you have an issue that cant be caused by software they should fix it.
Anyone with a Nexus at launch, could you root the phone without the official method? Nope and it was like that for a very long time because there was no incentive, we could root out of the box.
HTC lagged it hard with their method and it defeats the purpose of what they are doing. Who unlocks the phone and doesn't know about XDA?

LOLOL The Scotsman is anything but a troll and this thread is anything but useful. In any case, it actually only voids PARTS of your warranty I.E. if you need a new battery cover or if your volume rocker breaks you won't be up ****'s creek without a paddle.
If you brick your phone, you will be. Not only is this thread redundant, its title is inaccurate and wrong.

It's also inaccurate. In the U.S. a company can't void your warranty for product modifications made by the user unless those modifications specifically caused the defect.

And I don't blame HTC for trying to control their warranty costs. If someone unlocks their phone and OC's the chip and fries it or does something else equally stupid the user should have to pay for the repair. You pay to play.

Haha I sent my Nexus in after restoring to stock, they fixed it and relocked the bootloader.
Next time, I sent it in with CM7, they sent it back with CM7 and they repaired it.

Guys! The HTC Method is ok! Its was the same at the Nexus One! You void your warranty with unlocking but only the software not the hardware! If you flash back to stock and the error is still theire (software related) they will repairit and hardware they will everytime repair...They take no warranty for flashed software that is not authorized by them ... and this is ok!
AND they are not really able to find out if u flashed a bad radio or hboot! when its bricked. they can easily restore your phone!! This warranty thing just that you are aware of bad software!! They will repair your phone if its needed to be!
But it is fair that we brick our devices and they need to repair? No! We buy the phone as it is! Root is a feature that is not mentioned by HTC!!!

Well HTC still state on their website that the warranty is affected:

1) You brick your phone doing stupid stuff - HTC's not going to fix it.
2) You're unlocked and running a custom ROM and your display dies - HTC will fix it.
What they're saying is inline with what I originally posted. They'll repair a warrantied defect on the phone provided that unlocking it didn't cause the defect. Their statement pretty clearly infers they won't fix a bricked phone for free. It doesn't say your warranty is void if you unlock the phone and it has an unrelated defect. In the U.S., they couldn't say that if they wanted to.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but to overclock ( since I never did it on the phone ) you need to be rooted.And rooting your phone voids your warranty.So the answer is no.If you ever have to use your guarantee you better get jig.Or you can just flashback your stock firmware with its kernel. A friend of mine told me that if this is done without jig they still have a way to see that you tried to lie to them.
But staying with stock roms/kernels for 2 years (in my case) is bull.And you cant even tell if something will break in those two years.. And even if it did, what would it cost you?20 bux..The advantages you get from flashing new roms and kernels worth more than 20 bux in my opinion.Hope I answered to your question.

Yes, it is for free.
I meant it like if your microphone gets broken and they dont count your warranty because its their right to believe that this bug may come from the rom you flashed..In most cases they will be wrong but who am I to judge them.
So they will ask you to pay for the repair, which will probably be around 20 bux, thats what I meant.
I'm more concerned in my phone falling out of my pocket and cracking the screen, where the warranty wont help me at all..
So as I said... What are the odds that something will get broken.
I'm 17 years old and I have changed 3 or 4 phones and I have never used my warranty.

Have to return A2 for replacement, question about bootstrap

So, I bricked my last A2 and had it replaced and the one they gave me is horrific (bunch of issues...). Anyway, I know I have to unroot, they will most certainly detect that. However, What about bootstrap? Do you think they will notice that when they bring it to the back to do their "troubleshooting"? Because I was just planning on unrooting and then uninstalling bootstrap app (incase they know what that is, i know that that wont remove they bootstrap). So, what are your opinions on that?

I understand if you microwave it, it's gone for good, but otherwise do they have a way to salvage a phone with hosed bootloader or hard bricking? Will it require special hardware setup to recover these phones? I am sure bricking would be a common phenomena in Moto's lab ...

Hey now lol. I try I try. I totally fixed my Captivate...after I bought this AWESOME phone. But I didn't brick this one, it was a bad replacement, and my last one, yeah FXZ confused me so my ignorance overtook my ability to fix it, because I couldnt find the files on the forums (links were down) and flashed wrong ones (live and learn?). But yes, being a sophmore in high school I probably shouldn't being doing this stuff as I don't have any money lol.

Yes, unless the EMMC is corrupted beyond redemption they have special flashing tools to restore phones to a usable condition. Just think about when the phone is made; it is a blank slate. They have to have a way to flash it initially. They can use a similar method to resurrect it if it is not damaged beyond repair.

Hmmm ... that's exactly is my point; if it is all software, why doesn't it leak like RSDlite? Then users could recover these bricked phones themselves and no need of these warranty calls. It must be some special hardware (to be connected to JTAG?) which even our service centers do not have available. Then we could take our out of warranty phones to them and get it restored for a small fee. Now if I take a bricked phone to them, they change the motherboard and charge ~30% of the phone value.

That is because there is an efuse that was blown as part of this process, and you can't unblow a fuse/efuse. That is why you are getting new boards. I was at one the AT&T service centers last week and we looked at one of the bricks, and it did throw 2 efuses that I could find. We could connect them to JTAG with the correct connetions, but we could NOT see the phone from the JTAG device/software.

Is it not an inefficient (or dangerous (or suicidal)) design that if you overwrite the bootloader (even by an older version) then a efuse blows somewhere and the motherboard becomes useless. You may refuse to boot if the bootloader isn't trusted but killing the phone in the process sounds too bad to me. Would this happen with phones with unlocked bootloader too?

No, this is a Motorola ONLY thing, as inefficient as it might be. There is no need for anything like is in a unlocked bootloader phone. This happens because these phones are just like iphones in that Motorola does NOT want us "playing" with them, or doing any kind of dev work on them, Moto phones have a HUGE history of being non developer friendly. That is also why certain devs like me find them a challenge and want to "breakthrough" all that.

Well, except their managers we all see how it backfired. It doesn't interfere with people who wants to stay stock, and if it gets bricked doing some dev, they get a warranty call (and maybe they have to swap in 90% cases). Doesn't help anyone.
However I had a Milestone before (why did I buy another Moto afterwards questions my sanity) but even if it had a locked bootloader (and after stock 2.1 no update was given), devs could port froyo and finally CM7 and CM9. I am hoping in spite of the lock, we'll be able to port CM9/10, keeping the kernel same. I am hopeful as LG Thrill 4G, Motorola Droid 3 has CM9 already.

Unlocking bootloaders voids warranty in USA?

I find people saying otherwise but from what I can tell according to HTC's warranty statement, and calling in and speaking to a customer service rep, the warranty is void if the bootloaders are unlocked. Does anyone have any info contrary to this?

All over the product page for the U11 it declares that unlocking the boot loader doesn't void the warranty. Htc Dev hasn't caught up to reflect this.

Do you have a link? When I checked their product page I don't see anything about the warranty not being voided...

That's so strange... I know their warranty for devices since 2016 states that unlocking the bootloaders will void the warranty.

Question regarding the warranty. If I unlock the bootloader and then decide to return the phone within the normal 30 day return period will they accept it? Or does voiding the warranty also void the return policy?

It probably depends on where you bought it honestly. HTC themselves may check but I doubt a retailer like Amazon would, or even know how to tell.

I'm gonna keep screenshots of these just in case I have to fight with them on warranty issues. Although they have always said warranty is void but never had any issues with it. They never even mention it on the phone when getting a replacement.
