[Q] How to make a rom? - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hey peeps just wondering how to make a rom?
I got a 6core processor, 8gb ram, gtx 470 gc and lots of space. I really want to dip my hands and create one. I must run linux and which one should i use?
I have w7 u,
Listen I am seriously I want to make my own rom, maybe to share but really just see how it works and consumes life!
I love my G2X and wouldnt trade it for anything other than something better! Really I love this phone and would like to make something so share knowledge my friends!
Edit; I think if this was available we could muster in some new talent or beable to make our own super custom roms and hear the headaches from users about why this and that dont work!

I'm no Dev or genius for that matter but when I wanna learn something I just Google my questions and 99.9% of the time I find out. There's always YouTube also which can be even more helpful sometimes compared to just reading a guide online.

Just to update you information the specs state a Quad core (4 not 6).

Well building roms isnt something you can just jump into. But if you want to learn i would suggest building cm from source.
After you can figure that out start working on modding ota roms and adding functions like extended power menu, notification toggles, init support, etc etc.

6core is better then 4 core for compiling source. My phenom ii x6 1090t burns through building ics and gb with ease. More cores means more active threads running at once. Make sure you have adequate cooling and the rig you described can do it easy.

If you really want to make a ROM, why don't you learn c c++ and java to contribute to cm. C for the kernel, c++ for part of the cm source and java for apps and some of cm.

I was pointing out that what you state is not correct. "I got a 6core processor, 8gb ram, gtx 470 gc". This is not a 6 core but a 4 (quad) core base on the website specs. You have a Quad core not 6 unless you miss stated what your device is.

May i suggest that if anyone wants to learn how to make a ROM, i suggest not diving head first into ROMs, but start out learning how to theme. This way, you get a feel for exactly which apks control what, and as you grow more comfortable with modding how they look, you can start tinkering with how they perform. Also, it wouldn't hurt to learn how kernels work, so performance scripting can be another weapon to use. Research is the key. The best ROMs take lots of time to develop, the more you know about them, the better the outcome will be.
Just my opinion.

Well now that my transformer prime is coming I may just leave this phone as is and try to play with that thing
I really just want to compile a rom for my self and maybe release it to you guys. I am always fluxuating between roms and never quite know which to use.
Right now I just came back to cm7 nightly 201. There are just so many to choose from with this phone and I swear I might be the last one keep this phone. I love it with a passion. Just wish one day some one could figure out how to combine the internal sd card to the memory

Making a rom isnt something you can learn with ease. Some basic knowledge of programming is required.

Will all this be brought to the Epic 4g as well?? This looks promising. I'm not sure if these tweaks are based on 2.1 or 2.2 though...
sounds like fun =)
Says 2.2 in the article. The only thing I wonder is why this is needed other than being freaking cool. There is nothing on the Android Market right now that comes close to taxing the processor/GPU at stock speeds, because other phones would be incapable of running it at all. Now if Samsung were to commission some games to be made to take advantage of the awesome processor/gpu, that would be a different story.
Ouch! Now I know the Evo needs more cowbell.

Its not, people overclock for fun. Its a PC Nerd thing, which seems to have caught on with phones.

Hmm, I wasn't thinking of emulators. Interesting. Now if that N64 emulator ever sees the light of day . . . .
aint that some crazy ****! and they think they can hit 2ghz...damn i love my epic lol its only a matter of time now till the kernel gets ported and we see what these cpu's are really capable of
this is sick....but it makes me wonder what the Tegra 2 has to offer if its power rumors are true
Can the tegra hit +70fps on 3d benchmarks? (Not that its necessary)
I want this!! Make it so .....please!
They said something along the line of. Using ext4 format for the sd card to avoid the 'lag fix'. What does our epic use?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
First the kernel would have to support Ext4. not that big of a deal. But if you formatted ext4 on your SD card, it wouldn't be readable by Windows machines.
More than likely they mean using ext4 on the internal OneNand.
*fapfapfapfapfapfapfap*
People actually buying into this crap? LOL, too funny!
This is great but I'm looking more foward to next year when this kind of power is gonna be needed.
Being king of the benchmark hill is fun too.

The thing is, i dont know how this power will be needed even a year from now. Its a tricky situation. For this power to be needed, developers have to intentionally develop a game that needs high powered software to run it, essentially cutting off a giant segment of older phones. Alternatively, they have to include multiple texture resolutions and increase the size of the application to accommodate both older hardware and newer hardware. I hope we do see developers doing this, as I would love some killer games for the Epic that other phones couldn't run, but I have a tough time believing it will happen.
Console gaming has long been segmented. Lots of people will own epics. Who's to say it can't be that way for phones? Or let's go as far as pc games. They have long standing issues with compatablility

Honeycomb sdk preview port for desire hd works on inspire too

I got sick of youtubing honeycomb videos and decided to try out the desire hd honeycomb sdk port - guess what? It workes on inspire too. At least it works as well as it does on desire
I found a working link to the rom http://www.r2doesinc.bitsurge.net/OMHC-port-desirehd.zip
Here is the desire hd thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=958391
Be sure to have your copy of android revolution / cm7 / whatever on your sd card for reverting to it when you're done. (volume rocker down and power to get back to recovery) This rom has no data access. But it's a neat way to check out the ui for now. It runs surprisingly fast considering it's origins.
I just wanted to stick this where more inspire users might see it and confirm that it works, I am not the developer.

Still, doesn't make any sense to me. Especially when they've made it fairly clear 3.x is for tablets, 2.x is for phones. A bigger number in front doesn't always mean it's better. Not trying to start a flame war, just trying to understand.
It's highly buggy. Have tried this on a few phones.
Maybe google will come out with a phone version and simply name it something else.
Honeycomb was written specifically for tablets. Not a lot of that is easily ported to any phone.
Read xoom forums. Even it has its issues.

im with the why not crowd.. but i would think problems would arrise from the fact that the tablet has higher pixel count and surface area. But ill prolly try this out before tomuch longer.. maybe someone will make a custom rom to runn better on the phones.. Overclock the cpu and it would help with processing what is supposed to run on 2 cores.. but then again you got the extra gpu cores that he nividia chipset uses.. Sooo.. but on tiger and newegg you can get a low priced nividia powered tablets for 300 to 349. not that much money if you can save up and skip the bar for a month.

Ice Cream Sandwich (still not used to the new name) will be the honeycomb+gingerbread mash up for phones. But seriously this is XDA we can do anything. If we had source code there would be honeycomb phone roms popping up left and right with phone apps pulled from gingerbread. The size of the interface can be scaled for lower resolution phones. It can work. For those of us with wives that cant go out and spend money on a tablet without first spending more money on jewelry to bribe with - this rom is a neat way to peek at the latest hotness.

Underclocking is what i need
.. yeah, i need underclocking, not overclocking. Because when NAVIGON is running on my Omnia 7, it gets damned hot and sucks out the battery, even when connected to external power.

i agree but i think wp7 has more potential than oder os out there
underclocking
the OS is very fast, i've the problem that the phone is too hot and it shutdown byself.
i see ther's some rom with hack speed cpu. Ther's no app to underclock?
u dont have to overclock if u are using a a phone using nand storage ( eg. LG samsung). It is already fast enough
overclocking will only drain the battery...
But hoever no one has managed to do it yet although it has been achieved in win mobile but i am sure its very possible because win mobile can overclock & underclock just by installing a couple of apps
setcpu, leocpu apps ect
if someone can port them over to winphone , that will be great
well u can do a few changes to the registry to speed up the OS if u are using a phone like Hd7 which uses sdcard for storage. these tweaks will give u a speed and response like 1.5Ghz wp 7 phones
3 of them
Disable d2d hardware acceleration for Internet explorer
This wll disable certain features of hardware acceleration in IE9 and swith to CPU rendering saving some battery life in web surfing and also faster more fluid graphics
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\windows\INTE RNET explorer\main\feature control/Feature Render with 2D/ (set Dword to 0)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings
Value name: MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server
Value data: 32
Value Name: MaxConnectionsPerServer
Value data: 16
this will speed up overall loading of graphics in the OS

You see, the situation is this, you choose an OS that by its very nature is buggy, slow and in need of constant tweaking and modding, and that's fine, I used to be the same, id mod the significantly more moddable WM every other week.
But many of us have moved on, we want a phone that is just that, a phone, you pick it up and it works. I think its a perfectly valid statement to say that out of the box, WP IS a much better PHONE and contact (social/work) centre then iOS or Android, you will note the "out of the box" by that I mean, you don't need to install anything extra
Now its all down to personal preference, what's odd about your comment is that, very rarely do you see us going over to another forum that your not actively participating in and then drop comments like that which by its own nature will wind people up, its a little bit disrespectful to be honest.
Ive had WM WP and various Androids on mu HD2 and suffice to say, android will never grace its NAND again, not because its not any good, but because for my needs, WP is significantly better than anything else, I don't need to mod it, I don't want to mod it, I just want it to work

The marketplace is very poor?
Again that depends on your needs, at this moment in time I have about half a dozen apps installed, I cant think of anything else I want on it, so from my perspective the market place is actually perfect.
I don't have a need to install dozens upon dozens of apps, I don't need 1000 different torch apps. There are two reasons for this, firstly I simply have no need for anything else at the moment, secondly I refuse to get tied in to a marketplace, buys stacks of apps, then forever feel I am chained to that OS forever because moving would essentially mean throwing away all the apps I've already purchased and potentially buying them again.
Tell me, lets say over the course of you OS choice, you spend £50 on apps, then all of a sudden your world is rocked to its bones when the "Enemy" releases an OS version that actually suites your needs better than your Current OS, would you take the phone that is better for you and throw away £50 or would at the very least feel compelled to stay with your current OS choice and make do.
Don't be so quick to answer that, I can promise you at the very least the argument will crop up in your mind, when in fact there should be no argument at all, the phone that does what you need it to do the best IS the best choice...

[Q] From Vibrant to G2X - should I do it?

As the title says - is it a leap forward or backwords?
Especially I would like to ask you owners if there are enough ROMs and Kernels and development for this phone.
The only way to know if to buy a phone nowadays is to ask if it has a good community of DEV in XDA
I love MIUI - so I want to also know if MIUI is supported

Definitely a leap forward!
Development on our beloved G2x has come to a snail pace, but we've got weekly updated MIUI builds along with CM7, so what else could you need?
Definetly a leap forward, G2x ****s all over that other phone, only reason development has slowed down is cuz all the best roms have already been made available with what is to work with atm.

I wouldn't say the G2x sh*ts all over the Vibrant, but its definitely an upgrade.
Ok so I just got my G2x two hours ago. And WOW !!! The performance (and I am talking about daily usual stuff - browsing, email, scrolling, multi-tasking) is absolutely amazing!
Mind you - all stock, and it's super-fast! I love it.
It came with a screen protector and I was kind of disappointed from the screen, but when I took off that shi#y screen protector, the screen POPPED to life! So that's something to remember as well - some SP are horrible!
I am just starting to learn it now, and going over the forums.
If I may add a question here: does the MIUI we have for the G2x takes full advantage of this hardware? In other words, I would hate to sacrifice the speed, the performance of this device. Or is this not a concern?
Thanks all !!!!

Well, gingerbread in general is not optimized for dual core processors. Regardless, you'll still have a wonderful MIUI experience. I'd suggest you head on over to rootzwiki to get @Whitehawkx's MIUI builds, more up to date and I just trust his work more

Lack of development

Just curious...What's the deal with the lack of development with our tab...specifically with the wifi version? Are the developers more interested in other tabs or what? Development just started to pick up and then went dead.

I'm not a developer but speaking strickly as a tablet user I can honestly say this is the first tablet I have owned where I had no desire to modify it in any way. This tablet functions just the way I want it too right out of the box.
So for me , lack of development has never been an issue.
Have to admit, even though I rooted so I could use Apps2SD, my Note is fairly perfect just the way it is.
It could be that they're waiting for jelly bean.
And yeah, the note is pretty much perfect the way it is.
I will say that I had the same problem with my note GT 7000 (the phone) having the perfect GUI.
It would be nice to see some fast kernels and slim Roms though. Maybe some themes.

+1. Exactly my point. ROMs arent always aosp. With our tab, because of the s pen functionality, its a given that custom stock roms would make more sense. But stock roms can always be slimmed down and tweaked.
I have asked a few devs if they could consider developing for the Note 10.1. And they have all asked they have a very tight schedeule but maybe later ( Indiemega) and another said about the same but he would be glad to help (Wanam) if i liked to develop myself. And its really no point in just building something thats no better or diffrent from stock. And that would be what i would have come up with, i dont have any skills to see what MOD or TWEAK would fit nice and that doesnt interfere with some other tweak. Lets just hope for the best and maybe when prices goes down in a couple of months the devs start coming.
I too don't pretty much have any issue in the way my Note 10.1 performs. It is already cool. Plus the promised JB update will make it even better. So why bother developing anything for something that's bound to get better in near future?
Let's wait and see and in the meantime enjoy our precious
Im going to say this again... theres always a need for development. No matter how good the stock rom is we as a community need custom roms. Lol

I don't feel the need for this tablet... Just waiting for Jelly Beans!
Also can't wait for the Note II!
Develop for those that really need it.
this is the first tablet where i've had where stock is pretty damn good. great battery life, snappy processor, no real bugs... other than some apps i don't need this thing is great as is. even overclocking wouldn't make much of a difference in my usage.
still i'd probably flash a good JB rom when ever they start rolling out.
Devs come super handy when the product you like so mucho gets dropped officially, say goodbye to sweet potatoe pie 6.0, unless you upgrade the hardware.
dont burn bridges man, we need devs in the later years, no doubt.
