Honeycomb on GTab?

So, I have been saving up to buy a GTab, but now that I am close to having the money, I find myself hesitating. I love Android, I have an EVO, and really want an Android tab. I really like modding my phones and computers, though I am not skilled enough to accomplish most of it myself without the guides by the awsome devs on this site lol, which is most of the reason why I want the GTab.
My concern is if Honeycomb will ever make it to this tab? I have a lot of faith in the GTab devs. But I wonder how possible it will be if viewsonic never releases a base to build and improve?

I am pretty sure that honeycomb will come to this devices from the devs on this site. The only thing I see holding that back is if there is some hardware limitations, but I could not see that because the hardware on the gtab is very good

The gtab is a good buy because it runs the arm A9, and tegra 2...these also are what Google is building 3.0. Off of...meaning our hardware is about the same as the rest of the tablets launching q1,2 this year. Yes some will come with better displays, higher clock speeds (barely, might see some 1.2 and 1.4ghz, but all using the A9 reference) ,and more ram...but again these things really set up the gtab to be a great device...and at 400, its cheap compaired to the older galaxy tab....so I picked up one...and I will tell u this thing is fast with the new firmware he chefs have graced us with...soon enough this thing is going to be what to have...

What about porting the Eden UI from the Notion Ink Adam? Think that's possible?

the notion ink has yet to materialize in the hands of reviewers, or retail stores. I think a stock android build is better than anything they can come up with regardless (personal opinion)
Also, Honeycomb is 2.4, not 3.0

Has google released the build number for honeycomb? I haven't seen an official number yet. With such a huge upgrade and finally a build that has tablets in mind, a 3.0 version number seems very likely.

Actually yes, it does matter. A 2.4 build number would indicate a minor revision like we've seen in all the 2.x builds. A 3.0 build indicates a major revision as evidenced by the video of 3.0 released today at CES.

Honeycomb is 3.0.......

agree, not impressed by the Uden UI at all. Honeycomb UI is soooo cool.. check out the honeycomb videos on youtube (created by Tmobile).

I always prefer stock android over crazy themed stuff. Usually overkill most times. VEGAn is my Roman of choice at the moment because its as stock as it gets next to cyanogenmod, but I couldn't stand CM on the gtab. I love it on my Droid though.. that being said.. I'm salivating over Honeycomb right now. Here is a YouTube link to the CES video...

I hope that it can be made to run on our tabs... Not sure VS will do the work considering the work they put into TnT recently.

GTablet has the same specs at most of the new Android 3 tablets being announced at CES. The only spec maybe lacking is the G Tablet's resolution, as many of the new 10.1s are going with 1280. However, I don't see Google be so short sighted to mark 1280 as some magical requirement. Tablets are coming in all shapes and sizes and the o/s needs to be scaleable or they will run into the same fragmentation issues they have now.
I was so close to pulling the trigger on a NI. I am glad I didn't. Hardware wise it still looks great but that Edan overlay is just too much. I know these tablet/phone manufacturers are all trying to tweak themselves into a market advantage because most users run whatever 'stock' is handed to them for the life of a device but it's becoming an issue. Like buying a PC loaded with bloatware only you cannot cleean it up in most cases. No add/remove programs or even a simple way to reload the stock o/s.

It looks like there is no hardware requirement for honeycomb after all.

That's re-assuring. I'm guessing that with new Android iterations, we'll hit memory limit problems before CPU or display limitations (unless they (shudder) hard-coded minimum resolution).

Technically, both are true...
Tegra2 is based on an ARM Cortex-A9 which runs the ARM7 instruction set...
It's a confusing naming scheme....ARM11 are old and slower...so higher number does not mean better performance...

Here's the article that jwischka was talking about below from Engadget. I was thinking that Honeycomb would support both tablets and smartphones and different screen resolutions since in the video where Andy Rubin showed off the Motorola Tablet, he let it slip that Honeycomb "sort of is and sort of isn't" for phones.

Also some indication today that there will be smartphone support, albeit with a reduced featureset. Hopefully this does not mean our screen resolution will exclude us from tablet Honeycomb.

Hah i just took my nook color back today and ordered a gtab I need a 10" screen though. But i had mine running at 1.1ghz very stable adn VERY snappy.

We don't even have proper hardware acceleration for Gingerbread yet and we're talking about Honeycomb SDK ports - ugh. Come on NVidia, snap to with the drivers!

I'm going to assume nvidia must have some compatible drivers for the tegra 2 for honeycomb already or else the xoom us going to be hobbled out of the box when it comes out

We have a semi-solid gingerbread rom less than 2 months after its release. I would imagine it will be a bit quicker, given the similarities between the internal hardware between the G tab and the various new Terga processor tablets that are coming out, but who knows.
I suspect in the end it will come down to how much effort the devs want to put into making things work for the G tab. With 2 groups of people working on their own roms (Vegan and Cyanogen), I am not sure they'll drop what they're doing to work on a stock honeycomb release.
Hope I'm wrong though.

I would imagine that Roebeet with his TNT lite Roms will have a working Honeycomb as soon as VS team releases their bloatware version.
I am hoping that this is the OTA update that VS hinted at earlier this month.

Oh let's hope we have something much faster than waiting for VS.

For an unbias view and ease of applying apps and roms and ease of having apps work properly, which would be best to get? NookColor or a GTab
the screen difference isnt that much of a main concern really

I think that the g-tab has the better hardware (not certain tho). That would be more important i would think.

If the screen isn't an issue, the only answer is the GTab. The hardware specs are better, and nothing about it is locked - you can have a custom rom on the device in less than 5 minutes. It takes longer to download the roms from the internet than it does to put them on the device. This isn't something that's common among devices - often hardware manufacturers lock the bootloader down and make it tricky for users to install custom software - the original root procedure on the EVO required using adb and was far from straightforward, if you weren't technically inclined. By contrast, installation for the GTab involves unzipping a file onto the internal memory and rebooting (slightly more complicated than that, but not much).
I don't know the process on the Nook, but I can't imagine it's simpler than the GTab. The Nook is a proprietary book reader, and B&N is selling them so that you'll buy books and read them - not so you'll hack it into a tablet. They've probably put quite a bit more thought (and if they haven't yet, they're almost certainly about to) into locking the device down.
The main issue with the GTab is the screen. Other than that, it's honestly a very nice piece of hardware, and one that you can be happy with.

Engadget now has a video of it running on the Nookcolor with hardware acceleration. It's so smooth, but there's like no apps i guess since it was built from the SDK preview.

Not only that but if you follow the link to the source you see this...
graphics acceleration more or less working. The SGX driver seems too old for some buffer request of android 3.0, so right now the statusbar is invisible but still functional. Not sure if I can fix that or have to wait for the AOSP release.
What is not working... pretty much everything else, no accelerometer, no wlan, no sound.

Android Tablets?

Hello,
i am interested in buying an Android tablet, however i don't want to spend so much money either.
Thus i suppose a branded tablet is out of question. The first generation iPad seems a good solution, but i dont like the idea leaving android and starting from scratch in understanding their OS... Even Nook Color is in my options!
However there are so many unbranded tablets. How to chose?!?!
Would all connect with no problem to Android apps and market?
I have an Android Motorola phone currently, thus i would prefer to have a capacitive tablet as well.
Would i be able to buy a protector for my tablet if this is unbranded?
Any recommendations please?

Got a color nook loaded in dual boot and run 2.3 on it If you do not need microphone and camera then this is great choice. I did not load on the nook 2.3 because I wanted to keep the reader it come loaded with, this reader reads out loud the kid's books in a real human recorded voice. This is awesome for my kid who is 4. But if you do not need this feature then you can load directly on to the system 2.2 or 2.3 or 3.0 This device is a flashing geek's dream fun to modify and 200 bucks

Being able to know everything needs root an android, having so many apps and knowing that what i would be searching on my phone would be done also for my tablet, that would make me really happy.
I am not in a mood for searching info on how to jailbreak an ipad...

If you're on the cheap, rooting a NC is the way to go. B&N lists it for sale @ $200 occasionally, but you can usually find one listed on Craigslist for the same price or a little cheaper.
If you've got $400 to spend, pick up the Asus Transformer, it's the best Android bang-for-the-buck at the moment.

Thinking of actually getting an htc again because of this lol Given the choice would you trade for one of the newer htc phones because of superior hardware alone?

They do have more ram but the processor on the nexus s is way better than the snapdragon on these devices you mentioned.

I'm having some difficulties running fruit ninja with wifi on and syncing in the background. Everything just slows down. Same when running music in the background and playing fruit ninja at the same time. Beginning to not like this phone

Phone is running great for me, i assume you are talking abotu ice cream sandwhch, which is gonna merge honeycombe and gingerbread?

You think a phone without hardware and softkey buttons would be easy to use? I'm a bit of a skeptic. Always enjoyed having to press something at the front to check for notifications.

I'm using honeycomb right now and I love the screen keys. Don't judge it until you try it.
Its like, physical keyboard vs on screen keyboard.

I guess, you were actually attracted by those HTC devices because of the hardware
However, most of us here in Nexus S community, we choose Nexus S because it is pure google android.
And so, we're able to create greater and greater kernel and rom.
Yes! DHD and IS with 768 ram is awesome!
BUT! please be remind that it drain battery very much as you tend to run more apps in background with such more free memory.
I think so far 512mb is sufficient as it is able to kill background empty apps automatically when ram is low.
You mention that you play ninja while wifi on and music playing, it will lack.
I have a few suggestion for you
1st, Get ANDMemory from the market, Run it at TOP SPEED optimization at auto.
(Or extreme if you want)
2, You can try Trinity Kernel 1.44, it will gives you more power
3, You can try to use less widget as they drain memory+battery.
Anything, you can just PM me and I am more than happy to help
Just for you info,
I run Fruit Ninja THD version (Not the normal version) with Chain Fire 3D, with 3G connection going on. No lack, smooth like butter

They're still getting the OTA. But the general idea is that, we as true "Nexus" users don't like relying on manufacturers to do their part by releasing a OTA of the next Android version.
We like our phones:
1. Unbloated
2. New Android OS the week its announced.
3. Easy to unlock bootloader
And I honestly think those three factors are significant selling points in terms to the hardcore Android user. We can't fight specs, they get better and better everyday. However, we could fight on the battlefield in terms of software.
Hardware changes everyday and becomes better.
Software changes every couple of months and as Nexus users, we're guaranteed to get the updates asap without waiting 6+ months for the next update.

Smartphones have a life span of about 6 months these days. If you're lucky.
Unless you're content with the older software and hardware. But at the rate hardware is changing and the progression of software its hard to keep up to date without shelling out a bunch of cash every 6 months.

Yup. Kinda like how the G1 survived forever, and I think the G1 is still pretty strong today. Not as strong as how it was one or two yearsa ago (maybe I'm wrong because I dont follow the G1 forums anymore) but its dev community made the phone for what it is. The developer community and the "community" using that particular phone makes the phone.. well.. THE PHONE!
The only thing obsolete are these new phones coming out with Android 2.2 still. Gingerbread (2.3) has been out since late last year (December). It's now July 16, 2011.. six months later. How many phones have gotten Gingerbread officially? That's right only less than ten devices. Who's obsolete now?

Yeah.. they start reaching eol in about 6 months if you want to stay current/latest greatest. What's the nexus s at? Around 6? And I'm already considering dual (or more) core phones with better specs etc... in the very near future. Sure I could keep the nexus s for another 2 years, but I wont. Maybe you will.

It's more of an Android problem. The current Nexus S isn't being maxed out at what's possible. The software always lags the hardware. All Android has had over the last year are devices with better hardware yet that hasn't really made a lick of difference in performance.

That's exactly the point! Looking back at each version of Android, For SGS, 2.2 and 2.3 have really significant imporvement!

Ice cream sandwhich will be hardware accelarated so i would think it will be much smoother an they said it doesnt matter how old ur phone is u will be able to run it so wait an see

Hey peeps just wondering how to make a rom?
I got a 6core processor, 8gb ram, gtx 470 gc and lots of space. I really want to dip my hands and create one. I must run linux and which one should i use?

I love my G2X and wouldnt trade it for anything other than something better! Really I love this phone and would like to make something so share knowledge my friends!
Edit; I think if this was available we could muster in some new talent or beable to make our own super custom roms and hear the headaches from users about why this and that dont work!

I got a 6core processor, 8gb ram, gtx 470 gc and lots of space. I really want to dip my hands and create one. I must run linux and which one should i use?

Listen I am seriously I want to make my own rom, maybe to share but really just see how it works and consumes life!
I love my G2X and wouldnt trade it for anything other than something better! Really I love this phone and would like to make something so share knowledge my friends!
Edit; I think if this was available we could muster in some new talent or beable to make our own super custom roms and hear the headaches from users about why this and that dont work!

I'm no Dev or genius for that matter but when I wanna learn something I just Google my questions and 99.9% of the time I find out. There's always YouTube also which can be even more helpful sometimes compared to just reading a guide online.

Just to update you information the specs state a Quad core (4 not 6).

Well building roms isnt something you can just jump into. But if you want to learn i would suggest building cm from source.
After you can figure that out start working on modding ota roms and adding functions like extended power menu, notification toggles, init support, etc etc.

6core is better then 4 core for compiling source. My phenom ii x6 1090t burns through building ics and gb with ease. More cores means more active threads running at once. Make sure you have adequate cooling and the rig you described can do it easy.

If you really want to make a ROM, why don't you learn c c++ and java to contribute to cm. C for the kernel, c++ for part of the cm source and java for apps and some of cm.

I was pointing out that what you state is not correct. "I got a 6core processor, 8gb ram, gtx 470 gc". This is not a 6 core but a 4 (quad) core base on the website specs. You have a Quad core not 6 unless you miss stated what your device is.

May i suggest that if anyone wants to learn how to make a ROM, i suggest not diving head first into ROMs, but start out learning how to theme. This way, you get a feel for exactly which apks control what, and as you grow more comfortable with modding how they look, you can start tinkering with how they perform. Also, it wouldn't hurt to learn how kernels work, so performance scripting can be another weapon to use. Research is the key. The best ROMs take lots of time to develop, the more you know about them, the better the outcome will be.

Well now that my transformer prime is coming I may just leave this phone as is and try to play with that thing
I really just want to compile a rom for my self and maybe release it to you guys. I am always fluxuating between roms and never quite know which to use.
Right now I just came back to cm7 nightly 201. There are just so many to choose from with this phone and I swear I might be the last one keep this phone. I love it with a passion. Just wish one day some one could figure out how to combine the internal sd card to the memory

Making a rom isnt something you can learn with ease. Some basic knowledge of programming is required.
