[Q] HTC Mail app - update interval setting ignored - HTC Desire S

I'm using the HTC Mail app (Sense 3.5 - Endymion 3.2 ROM) for reading my work IMAP mail.
I don't want to poll this mail continuously, only poll/refresh manually.
My update frequency is set to "manual", however the app keeps updating regularly.
Once per 3 minutes it seems.
I do use JuiceDefender (set to 15 minutes), but that doesn't change the fact that the update frequency is set to "manual".
What am I doing wrong?

I've had the opposite problem with the HTC mail app. Refresh set to push, but test emails take 30 mins to show up. Regardless of setting or hitting refresh. I've found it's just inconsistent. Does K9 mail do the same thing?
If juice defender is anything like tasker, it can force a refresh even if you have the apps frequency turned down. Tasker however, uses a plugin called Synker to do this, which you can specify what accounts are refreshed. Perhaps give it a go if juice defender it's the issue.

App suggestion - Sync Scheduler

The stock N1 Power Manager Widget has a Sync button that allows you to toggle background data sync (aka Push). I imagine Toggling it off reduces data usage and thereby saves battery. This will of course preclude Gmail checking, calendar & Picasa album sync etc.
So someone trying to maximise their battery life might toggle their Sync button to off, then intermittently place it back on again every hour or so to allow Gmail check and calender updating. They could also just go into gmail and press refresh. But both method require manual input from user.
So how about a small utility to automate this task. User could specify intervals like 15, 30, 60min and also a Sync ON period of say 1, 2 or 5 min.
It might also have the capability to toggle Sync off, after an user defined period for when user overrides the schedule & activates it via the Power Manager Widget.
Does this make sense and does anyone think the battery savings would justify to work involved to make this utility?
BTW I am not a programmer. Just an ideas man Checked the Market and the only sync utilities are manual toggles or one button shortcuts to accounts and sync settings. So I reckon this is a utility waiting for one of you clever programmer guys to make.
I requested an app similar to this over a year ago and it got nowhere. Then again, Android was still fairly young back then too...
What I would like to see is a Peak/Off-Peak time scheduler similar to what Windows Mobile ActiveSync has.
It would be nice to have this work with ALL data syncs (Email, Twitter, Facebook and ESPECIALLY Corporate Email (this last one is the most important for me).
I know something CAN be done, Touchdown has this built in, but I would rather use stock apps for corp mail than Touchdown.
Thanks,
+1 on this one as well.I justhave a data sync toggle.surely if that is possible someone can make an app which turns this on and off at desired intervals?
Yeah - Lets keep it simple to start with - simply manipulating the data sync toggle @ prescribed intervals initially. The stuff you suggested Talderon might be nice for a more sophisticated tool. I reckon just same effect as pressing the Power Manager Widget, sync button would be good for starters. Working on the Kiss principle.
BUMP
Been a while - Has anyone subsequently found an app that can disable Auto-Sync to a user defined schedule?
+1
I have been searching for something liike this.
I have noticed that auto sync is the biggest battery drain on the phone, much more like for example Sipdroid.
I found WiSyncPlus which in theory does the job, but the still lacks some functions in android 2.1 (like forced sync schedule and autosync schedule).
I have been myself looking into the code of android in order to try to do a simpple app to do the job!
regards!
Umm what? The display is the biggest drain on the battery, and you can check on what drain your battery in settings to confirm what does and does not drain the battery.

Battery

How do you find you very the best battery life out of your cappy??
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
Your question is too generic. There are so many factors. Are you on stock or a custom rom?
What kernel/modem are you using?
What apps/widgets do you use?
There are tons of questions, what are you running, and how long does your battery last currently?
I'm running the new phoenix rising 4.0.3 using fancy and beautiful widgets facebook widget and score center.

Off hand I am not sure what the stock kernel is with that rom, but the build you are on is relatively new. Have you calibrated your battery and done a full charge cycle? 100% to dead
Things I do
Turn off auto rotate
Wifi policy set to off when screen is off
Limit how frequently I allow my apps to sync
Turn off mobile data when on wifi
how do you limit the syncing? in 'accounts and sync'? or each app?
Each app should have options for how frequent they sync
Can you explain how to do that? I've tried searching for that option in menu and nothing...

For example fancy widget, click on app in draw, refresh settings, I refresh every 6hrs.
The sports widget probably refreshes allot. I use sports center but I stoped using the widget
I turn of background synching for.my accounts that are on my phone like email and the like.
I always keep the brightness down on my phone and when I.really need to go for a while I will underclock the phone.
Low Screen brightness, No widgets, don't allow applications to "phone home". Gmail is the only thing I keep "sync" on for. Everything else I manually refresh. I also find that weather apps tend to keep refreshing data even after you think you've closed it. I have to keep an eye on Weather Bug (not the widget). I haven't put my captivate on the charger since Friday afternoon and it's now 5 am Sunday and it's still at 35%
Wow. I think I might have damaged my battery. I've tried calibrating my battery a few times and no change. A full charge still only lasts a few hours. I miss the way my battery used to be when I first got it.

Juice Defender w/Touchdown push

Wondering if anyone has tried to use Juice Defender with Touchdown activesync push? I need to receive my work emails immediately, but from what I can gather, Juice Defender turns off the mobile network with the screen off, which will prevent Touchdown from receiving push emails.
Is this correct? And if so, is there any workaround?

You can set JuiceDefender to Balanced, Aggressive, etc. You want to choose 'Customize'. Then just take like 30 minutes to go through the settings tab and change it to your liking. One of the abilities is to set certain apps to always be connected to the internet(It's the very last setting, all the way at the bottom). I used it for a while but I noticed instead of having the usual x2.10 increased battery life it dropped down to about x1.54, now I don't even use JD at all. It just messed with my weather widgets too much.

Unfortunately, this didn't work for me. I bought Juice Defender Plus in order to apply settings to specific apps. I chose "enable/screen off" for Touchdown, but when I send an email from my desktop gmail account to my Android's Exchange Touchdown account, my phone does one of two things:
1) It receives the email (delayed), and the 4g signal stays on in perpetuity
2) It does not receive the email. 4g is off and stays off until I turn the screen on. When the 4g signal turns on, the email usually comes in immediately, but is sometimes delayed a couple minutes.
I don't want either of these outcomes. I just want it to turn on 4g when Touchdown receives a push email, and then turn 4g off immediately.
What am I doing wrong?

So I've been using Juice Defender today, and I STILL see about the same drop in battery, despite the fact that it turns my MOBILE DATA OFF, only syncing 5 minutes every 15 minutes. I've been on Wifi most of the day, which also shuts off, only syncing 5 minutes every 15 minutes. In 5 hours, I've dropped 41% of my battery. I've had my screen on for a grand total of 26 minutes.
What's strange is, when I go into CPUspy, it seems that the phone has spent more than 40 minutes using either the 800 or 1000 mhz clock speed. I have Touchdown set to pass through JD, and when I go to spare parts, it says the app has been used for 15 minutes in "partial wake usage." In comparison, the Android System has only used about 13 minutes. SMS has used 45 seconds. I have activesync on, but I haven't received a single email today. Why is Touchdown in use for 15 minutes? Is this normal? Does it have something to do with activesync trying to run when JD has shut off all my data?
Someone please weigh in. This battery life battle is infuriating.
JD doesn't re-enable the data connection on our LTE devices. It's a known issue being worked on by the developer: http://feedback.latedroid.com/forum...vate-beta/suggestions/1341575-4g-wimax-issues

Which email app has bettery battery drain?

Really basic question! Is the HTC email app or the standard yellow AOSP one better for battery life?
HTC mail in my opinion bcos it had peak and non peak period mail checking preferences which you can set how many days in a week and plus define your own timing of peak period. It also let you select minutes and hourly intervals.
The yellow one that you refers to I believe allows only hourly intervals without options to set peak periods preference. Currently I'm on ics senseless 2.10 and the yellow mail have maximum of 1hour intervals, that's it. So to summarise and answer your question, in my opinion is htc mail.

Thanks for your thoughts. Do you happen to have any specific/detailed information about how much drain each app uses? I am just curious which app is more efficient before using the filters you just mentioned.
Cant be that quite detail as from my setup with htc mail would be like peak hour: set from 8am-5pm @30mins interval. So after the peak hour i set it to 3hrs interval. if using the yellow mail, just imagine at every 1hr intervals of checks being performed. Hope you get the idea.
Edit: If email within the office hours is important then yes, you can double the frequency or else you can set at 2hrs or more intervals.

[Q] How do I setup juice defender properly?

Hi folks. I recently bought the juice defender ultimate. I like it, but i find myself turning it on and off often. Simply because i don't get the seemless usage I want out of it. When I stream music and the screen shuts off, then the data also cuts off. Then I don't get emails at the frequency I'd like. I do push e-mails. I assume this is an issue. But it I set my boxes up to update every 5 minutes, would this conflict with the juice defender timer?
Those are my main issues with juice defender. Also, text messages don't come in timely either. Someone please help me set it up better. I'm getting 8-10 hours from my phone with moderate usage.

On Status tab under Profile select advanced.
On Help tab under Help select show.
Read thorough help information included with each feature.
To continue streaming with screen off go to Triggers tab, under Apps select 'enabled' then under Configure tap on the configure apps button. This'll bring up a list of apps. Select the ones that require streaming to operate (Pandora, internet radio, play music, etc.)
One of the main features of JD is to periodically enable data to conserve battery. I've scheduled mine for 15 minute frequency (see under Schedule tab). I don't get emails or social network updates immediately but it doesn't matter to me.
JD shouldn't impact SMS unless you've set JD to turn on airplane mode. This is because SMS doesn't use data.
Took me a while to get things setup properly. Doing so taught me some things. Its interesting to look at battery stats graph and see active toggling at the frequency set in JD.
Have fun!
Here's an example showing JD regularly toggling Wi-Fi. I have it set to thirty minutes in this case.
