Battery - Captivate General

How do you find you very the best battery life out of your cappy??
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App

Your question is too generic. There are so many factors. Are you on stock or a custom rom?
What kernel/modem are you using?
What apps/widgets do you use?
There are tons of questions, what are you running, and how long does your battery last currently?

I'm running the new phoenix rising 4.0.3 using fancy and beautiful widgets facebook widget and score center.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App

Off hand I am not sure what the stock kernel is with that rom, but the build you are on is relatively new. Have you calibrated your battery and done a full charge cycle? 100% to dead
Things I do
Turn off auto rotate
Wifi policy set to off when screen is off
Limit how frequently I allow my apps to sync
Turn off mobile data when on wifi

how do you limit the syncing? in 'accounts and sync'? or each app?

Each app should have options for how frequent they sync

Can you explain how to do that? I've tried searching for that option in menu and nothing...
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App

For example fancy widget, click on app in draw, refresh settings, I refresh every 6hrs.
The sports widget probably refreshes allot. I use sports center but I stoped using the widget

I turn of background synching for.my accounts that are on my phone like email and the like.
I always keep the brightness down on my phone and when I.really need to go for a while I will underclock the phone.

Low Screen brightness, No widgets, don't allow applications to "phone home". Gmail is the only thing I keep "sync" on for. Everything else I manually refresh. I also find that weather apps tend to keep refreshing data even after you think you've closed it. I have to keep an eye on Weather Bug (not the widget). I haven't put my captivate on the charger since Friday afternoon and it's now 5 am Sunday and it's still at 35%

Wow. I think I might have damaged my battery. I've tried calibrating my battery a few times and no change. A full charge still only lasts a few hours. I miss the way my battery used to be when I first got it.

actual battery management app that works

SuperPower (I got it on AppBrain) is an advanced power management app. It does cool stuff like allow you to schedule your phone to shut off data when the screen is off WHILE scheduling the data to come on for a couple minutes every hour to sync your email AND leave data on if your screen is off but you're downloading something. It didn't seem to play too nice with setcpu but has literally doubled my battery life without a noticeable change in performance. There's a thread on xda about it somewhere, but this is currently an unsupported beta so use at your own risk.

sounds like.
Ya, it's a similar concept to JuiceDefender. Less about task management and power profiles, though - isntead of setting up profiles you basically just enable levels of control over your phone for the app. And yes, 94tbird, I am aware that "of course it did it shut data off. any app that does that will extend batt life " but the impressive thing is that it didn't just turn data off, but it managed it so that I didn't notice it was off. If I wanted a phone with no data connection and great battery life, I'm sure I have an old nokia around here somewhere. The point was that it is a smart enough app to turn data off when I don't need it and on when I do, while still keeping my email box synced and all without me noticing a difference (besides the battery life). You could accomplish the same thing with the stock widget to turn your data connection on and off, but you would actually have to turn it on and off. This app does it for you, and seamlessly enough that you don't notice it working. But hey - do as you like. I don't have any connection to the developer(s) of this app, I just dl'd it and it worked really well, thought I would share.

Battery life with auto sync

I've had my inspire for a few weeks now and am very happy with it after I rooted and installed afr003. However, my battery life is terrible. From reading other forums it seems this is a common issue. If I disable background data and turn off auto sync the battery life is acceptable. But in that configuration I don't seem to get emails, the weather doesn't update, and the Facebook app doesn't update (the main things I look at regularly). When auto sync is on the refresh symbol is constantly present in the upper tool bar, which I'm not sure is common or not. With background data and auto sync enabled I seem to lose 1% of battery every 2-4 minutes. If anyone can help me make my battery last at least 10 hrs while still being able to get email and weather updates I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Are you syncing friend streams, Facebook or news? And how often are they set to sync. This would have a huge impact on battery life. If the phone has to keep going to the network to sync,it's bound to use up the battery faster.
As of now I'm only syncing my Google account and the weather. I disable the HTC sense sync and that seems to have helped the battery life some. Exactly what does HTC sense sync anyway?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
It appears that your text messages, wallpapers and a slew of other things not clearly defined. It really soaks up the battery during the sync process, but seems to settle down once it's completed. I removed the account and don't have any further issues with the battery.

Sense lets you ring your phone remotely from the site and locate it. It also allows you to lock it remotely or forward calls. The sense site is very buggy and those features only work some of the times. I decided to remove my sense account from my phone.
By the way, are you guys heavy users? My battery life seems pretty good and I'm rooted and OCed at 1.229Ghz. I went to bed with my phone around 70% battery and when I went to bed the next day with normal usage, it was around 26%. I can do heavy usage and still get through the day without charging.
I only have my gmail, calendar, and contacts being auto synced. I have weather synced every 3 hours as well via a widget.

Android System keeping the Xoom awake?

I noticed this recently so I'm guessing it might be related to an app but now my Android System keeps the Xoom awake always even with the screen off. Anybody else with the same problem? If so what apps do you have installed? Maybe we can find the common one amongst us that is causing this. Luckily the battery is so good that this isn't a huge issue but I want to fix it.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
Having the same issue. Wifi only model, I had wifi off for my 1hr commute to work, and it was awake the entire time.

It's definitely an app or something because I know in the past it hasn't done that at all. Can you list what apps you're using? Or if yours is new enough maybe do a factory reset and see if that fixes the problem?
Either way it's definitely software not hardware.
P.S. I have a Verizon XOOM.
What do you guys mean by the xoom staying awake? the screen not turning off or the android system not going into a sleep/standby mode.

If you go into Settings -> About -> Battery and you click on Android System it will say how long it's been awake. Mine currently has an awake time that equals the total time the Xoom is off the battery - i.e. it never is not awake. The screen turns off fine and the battery usage is low but not as low as if the Xoom was sleeping. When it's sleeping it goes into a lower power state but since Android System is keeping the XOOM awake it can't do that. Other than reduced battery there is no other problem with it though.
Under "Included Packages" for Android System in battery usage the following is listed:
PGM System
Settings
Google Backup Transport
Android System
Settings Storage
System UI
Motorola Location Proxy Service
In the main battery usage list nothing is above 3% usage. 5h 31m on, awake for 5h 11m.
Screebl Pro!
I am long time fan and user of "Screebl Pro" By Key Labs. It takes into account the screens orientation and keeps your device (Tablet or Smartphone) backlit. Its great.
I did a factory reset. The problem seems to be about 99% better. There is still awake time under Android System, but it's verrrrry minimal and not even close to the amount of time the display or system has been on. Leaving the Xoom idle for a while to check once again.
I was sort of dreading that. Please check often after you install apps so we can see if there's a particular app that's causing that.

No apps are over 1-2% after being on for 4 hours. 4 min of awake time under Android System. Looks like the issue is solved.
It turned out being Weatherbug. I uninstslled and reinstalled and I'm back to being able to sleep.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
After much testing it turned out to actually be having more than one CNN stack on my homescreen. Don't ask me why this causes this problem but it does. Weatherbug seems to be ok. I hope we get Android updates soon to address these bugs.

It's resolved, but not really solved. If anyone notices an underlying application or setting causing this, please be a dear and update this thread?
I just noticed this today. 100% wake time even with long stretches of the screen off. Happened before installing weathebug. I do have 1 CNN stack on my home screen gonna remove it and test.
Very perplexing. You will see much better battery life if the system actually sleeps lol.
Edit: Yep looks like it was the CNN widget. Took it off the home screen and the Xoom started sleeping. Weird.
I FOUND IT! Listen up folks there is a bug in the latest CNN app that was released recently.
When you have 1 or more CNN widgets and you click on a story VIA the widget it launches a service called BangoAnalyticsService or something and THIS is keeping the XOOM awake. Very easy to test, if you go into Applications -> Running Services -> CNN and terminate just the Bango service you will see the XOOM sleep immediately.
Good news is that you can launch stories using the CNN app (NOT the widget) and it will not launch this service so XOOM will sleep.
I've already reported this issue but PLEASE can you all do the same.
Here is how.
1. Make sure you have latest CNN app
2. Have at least 1 widget on your homescreen
3. Launch a story from the widget
4. Go back to home
5. Go to Settings->Applications->Running Services
6. Click on CNN (1 process, 2 services)
7. Click on BangoAnalytics or whatever it is and click on "REPORT"
Put a nasty comment in there for good measure too!!
Glad at least I know what it is. More people that complain, the quicker it will be fixed.
Workaround: Logout of CNN app if you're logged in. Now it appears you can use the CNN app (not the widget) and it will not launch the Bango service that is the culprit. Let me know if you see other issues.
Is there any concern in "Tablet idle" being at like 3%?
Accuweather Bug
I can confirm that the application Accuweather was keeping my wifi xoom awake. Please note that I checked the in app settings for a run in background or update interval setting which it did not have. Once I uninstalled the problem ressolved.

Just did this. This was the cause of my 100% wake times. Amazing though I still got 9hrs of life on the first 50% of my battery weven with constant awake lol.

nope.
Thank you! CNN widget was the culprit for me as well.
Device keeps to be ON and Heats up really bad and drains battery
Mine Xoom after the ICS 4.0 keeps running Android OS @ 90% use and keeps screen on and drains battery within 2 hours.
After hard reset, it seem to be disappeared, but once I've installed some app updates and minimum apps that I had to use, same thing happening.
So far after removing the DrawEverything app, it works better but have to test it and see further.
It is weird, and seem to me some sort of the memory leak causing device to enter into this state.
I will call Motorola and see if I could get any additional information.
Thank you for everyone posting an updates here.

I have made a discovery regarding battery life...

I haven't completely figured this out yet so you'll need to be patient with me.
Basically there was a new update for Es Task Manager which made it a whole lot more advanced, giving you control over not just running tasks but what tasks autostart at startup etc.
Anyway, i was playing around with it and decided to kill everything that i dont use and prevent it all from restarting for a laugh. The one thing i added to the "ignored list" - a list of apps that it never kills - is adw launcher.
Now im not sure which particular task it is but there must be some piece of LG software which is seriously eating up the battery because with all the ancillary background crap killed and just usual phone use (calls, texts, emails, some browsing, one or two photos and a pair of short 1080p 2D videos) and then a whole nights sleep with 3g on the whole time i have mamanged to retain 71% of the battery after 16 hours, 56 minites abd 30 odd seconds.
Im gonna investigate it more to find out what i did but so far this looks promising in helping fix this horrible battery life some of you have been getting.

Most LG apps are blockable, latest update however made com.lge.omadclient (the update checker) semi unblockable but blocking that breaks settings app so have to live with it until that's fixed.
But yeah, seems weird that the phone uses 2/3 of the power that the screen requires for Phone idle (% used divided by time) guessing there are a lot of things that currently are using too much juice from the battery for no reason, hopefully this will change with CM7
Third party apps can still access the setting even when the settings app itself force closes. I had to find a way around that previously when i removed the fonts app and discovered that display settings no longer worked. Most of the "battery optimization" apps allow you to change most of the settings you might need to if any part of the menu becomes innaccessible.
I noticed that omadclient seemed to be running forever and not achieving anything. Also com.lge.hiddenmenu is a suspect for using a bunch of battery.
Im hoping that some serious efficiencies can be discovered with the wifi adapter too cuz it seems to absolutely ruin the battery life even when just idle.

If you guys have background **** that wants to sync the whole time on the web....doesnt juice defender ultimate help? Its supposed to only grant internet access to all apps on a user definced time frame? (every 30mins for example)
I figured that default email app consumes too much battery and data with activesync. I deleted my corporate account and battery improved at least three times

I normally turn off 3G unless im actually using it, i fire it on selectively to check mail and google something. Old habits. Recently i have been leaving it on but the only things i have running that update are facey and gmail. Im convincee there is some other background process running that doesnt need to be.

I am on V10F today. I got the update yesterday night.
I have unplugged my phone at 07:20 this morning. I have made some calls, recived and sent a couple of texts. 3G data was always on, FB, Google+, Twitter, Gmail, Market, Weather App were always syncing. I have played a couple of games. Some surfing etc. It was a very ordinary day for my phone.. It is 22:44 now and I have 61% battery left. I think it is doing quite good.
I am using Automatic Task Killer and deleted my corporate e-mail account from the phone. E-Mail app of LG is a true disaster. Havent tried Touchdown yet, probably it will solve the case.

Screen brightness is always automatic.
Today, I have 77% battery left and it has been 7 hours after unplugging.
Data, 3G and Sync was always on. I havent played any games yet but used 3D camera which also consumes a lot.
I've got something incredible for me:
2 days, 2 hours, and 44 minutes. And I still have 8% remaining:
Details:
- Default launcher.
- 3G always off.
- Wireless is one when needed, first day it was on for about 4 hours of usage, and the second day for about two hours. During that time Sync is on, checking emails, using twitter app, reading Whatsapp messages, surfing by Tapatalk, youtube 3D, and downlading some videos.
- Taking some 3D pictures and some 2D/3D videos.
- Showing off 3D videos for friends.
- Playing a little bit 2D games before sleeping, about half an hour.
- Using TwinPic app and viewing 3D pictures.
- Receiving and making some calls.
Note that I have 14 3D app,42 default app, and 120 downloaded apps.
What helped me is Advanced task killer app, I used this configuration:
- Auto kill level: Aggressive.
- Auto kill frequency: When screen is off.

hey guys,
i made the experience, that the LG battery widget is one of the major problems for me. I just deactivated that and couldn't believe that this helps so much.
would be nice if you could test it for you and share your experiences.
check if there is a battery widget running. usually they drain battery. have optimus 3d and with everything off (wifi, bt, gps, no sync, no email, no skype, default task manager shows 0 apps running) from durning 8 hours of standby mode got from 90% to 6%. charged till 97% unplugged from socket in 20mins lost 3% battery. after 2 hours 50 was left.
removed LG battery widget from the desktop. charged back to 100%, unplugged. 2 hours passed: 99%.
seems that was the issue. hope it helps someone

[Q] Do the screen power saving options on this phone make a real difference?

The settings on the S3 have the following power saving options available: Auto adjust screen tone, Screen Power Saving and background color. Do any of these settings have a decent or better impact on battery life? I have a hyperion 4200 battery and use Lux autobrightness to lower screen brightness below zero when I dont need a bright screen, and seem to have my phone currently doing okay when it comes to wake locks, so wondering if these options make any noticeable difference in battery life or are they more gimmicky like a lot of the other settings choices.
I think the data syncs are more of a culprit than auto brightness settings but then again I have auto brightness on and it still helps. I notice my wife's phone gets better battery life than mine because she doesn't have as much data syncs in the background as I do even though she is constantly playing word games. She doesn't use FB, Twitter, Google plus, Google Music or Dropbox and I do. We both charge our phones at night but she has more screen time than I usually, stock batteries too.

I consider my battery life to be okay. I use my phone a lot so I cant expect the multiday cycles people have. I wanted to know this more for information. I have all my auto syncs off except for youmail, which i need on to update my custom voicemail greetings. To sync everything, i wrote a tasker action to sync everything everytimebi connect to a wifi access point other than gmail. For gmail, i have it set to sync every other time the screen turns on. I am able to do this because of the synker app from play store.
I'd say power save works. Extra hour maybe.
I turn off WiFi and data when I don't use it and my phone last all day with heavy texting and frequent WiFi use.
Running clean rom
With lean kernel
