Juice Defender w/Touchdown push - Verizon Droid Charge

Wondering if anyone has tried to use Juice Defender with Touchdown activesync push? I need to receive my work emails immediately, but from what I can gather, Juice Defender turns off the mobile network with the screen off, which will prevent Touchdown from receiving push emails.
Is this correct? And if so, is there any workaround?

You can set JuiceDefender to Balanced, Aggressive, etc. You want to choose 'Customize'. Then just take like 30 minutes to go through the settings tab and change it to your liking. One of the abilities is to set certain apps to always be connected to the internet(It's the very last setting, all the way at the bottom). I used it for a while but I noticed instead of having the usual x2.10 increased battery life it dropped down to about x1.54, now I don't even use JD at all. It just messed with my weather widgets too much.

Unfortunately, this didn't work for me. I bought Juice Defender Plus in order to apply settings to specific apps. I chose "enable/screen off" for Touchdown, but when I send an email from my desktop gmail account to my Android's Exchange Touchdown account, my phone does one of two things:
1) It receives the email (delayed), and the 4g signal stays on in perpetuity
2) It does not receive the email. 4g is off and stays off until I turn the screen on. When the 4g signal turns on, the email usually comes in immediately, but is sometimes delayed a couple minutes.
I don't want either of these outcomes. I just want it to turn on 4g when Touchdown receives a push email, and then turn 4g off immediately.
What am I doing wrong?

So I've been using Juice Defender today, and I STILL see about the same drop in battery, despite the fact that it turns my MOBILE DATA OFF, only syncing 5 minutes every 15 minutes. I've been on Wifi most of the day, which also shuts off, only syncing 5 minutes every 15 minutes. In 5 hours, I've dropped 41% of my battery. I've had my screen on for a grand total of 26 minutes.
What's strange is, when I go into CPUspy, it seems that the phone has spent more than 40 minutes using either the 800 or 1000 mhz clock speed. I have Touchdown set to pass through JD, and when I go to spare parts, it says the app has been used for 15 minutes in "partial wake usage." In comparison, the Android System has only used about 13 minutes. SMS has used 45 seconds. I have activesync on, but I haven't received a single email today. Why is Touchdown in use for 15 minutes? Is this normal? Does it have something to do with activesync trying to run when JD has shut off all my data?
Someone please weigh in. This battery life battle is infuriating.

JD doesn't re-enable the data connection on our LTE devices. It's a known issue being worked on by the developer: http://feedback.latedroid.com/forum...vate-beta/suggestions/1341575-4g-wimax-issues

App Idea: Automatically toggle mobile data every 30 seconds.

I was thinking, as a battery-saving measure, if it would be possible to have an app that would turn the mobile data on and off every, say, 30 or 60 seconds.
This way, you effectively still have "instant" notifications (minus a 30- or 60-second delay), but you are saving battery because half of the time mobile data is actually turned off.
Is anybody aware of whether or not this is possible, or whether there is any app that does this? I know there are apps that let you schedule different tasks (such as turn off Wi-Fi at 12:00), but I guess I'm looking for an app that would let me specify something to the effect of "Do X every X seconds."
Any thoughts?? I wonder if it would save a significant amount of battery.
there is Tasker for that and I'm currently using it. But of course u need to set up the profile yourself.
That's good to know. With Tasker, can you set something on a timer such as "Do this every X seconds?"
Also, do you happen to know if this idea would even help? It seems like it might, but I'm wondering if it would actually make a noticeable improvement.
I think it would use more data than it would save. Turning on and off data constantly would probably drain the battery than it would from leaving it stable.
Check out juice defender. Every 30-60 seconds won't help you much, but once per hour for three minutes or so will.
Also, see apn droid.
I'm using Tasker to turn off data when screen is off and then enable it every 15 min for 1 min

Exactly what I was thinking, since it has to scan for access points and establish a connection each time.
That said, Tasker's time context can do "between A and B, every X minutes".
CPU Tuner... it has become one amazing piece of software...
If you're rooted and overclocked, it will let you fine tune just about everything in a non confusing way.
In profiles you tweak mobile data (with "pulse", you specify how many minutes on and how many off), gps (if installed as system app), wifi, sync, bluetooth, toggle 2g/3g... and of course cpu speeds and governors...
Actually, pulse can be applied to all the above "togglable" items except the 2g/3g for obvious reasons.
In triggers, based on battery level, you can choose what profile to use depending on whether the phone is plugged in, the screen is off, or on a phone call (beta feature)
No, it's not my app. It's free and I'm helping with testing out new features
The pulse feature was just added to yesterday's update.

Mobile data turned on and doing nothing uses nearly zero battery. Reconnecting it constantly like this would make syncing of everything probably happen every time it reconnected. Possibly your accounts would re-sync, email would have to reconnect and sync, your weather apps etc might sync now that the phone has connected again, etc.
Sorry, sounds like a really absurd idea.

Best way to save battery is a minor inconvenience

If you dont care about push email and syncing contacts (most of us arent that important) I highly recommend turning off "Always on data" in the wireless settings. This time of day I am normally around 60% battery left (sometimes less) when I have it on... with it off? Im hovering around 92% battery and my phone started at 97% this morning because of the charger bug...
Basically if you turn this off, your phones DATA radio shuts off after 10 minutes of sleep. Gtalk, Gmail, contacts, calendar will not auto-push at this point, nor will any of your other apps (but who cares the phone is off). The work around for GTalk is simple - use trillian or Beejive which utilize Google Push messaging. Basically when you wake your phone, you instantly get all the missed IMs since both chat apps save your IMs on the server until you are available to push to. Android is awesome with reconnecting 3G and it happens in less than 2 seconds.
If you care about battery, check this out. Id rather have battery last 2 days than auto syncing contacts and gmail. Plus you can setup the standard email app to check your email for you since that doesnt require push (will check email when you wake it up).
Anyone else had success with this? I have considered it but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
I tried different sync settings with time, moving between checking for emails every 15-30 minutes as well as hourly, wasn't too much of a difference. I've turned off background data, but I haven't checked to see if turning off all data works. If I can find this setting I'll definitely try it tonight
I'm going to try this in a few minutes...once I get off this call. I hate being put on hold!
Best way to save battery is to turn off 4G (run only 3G). Why would I want my data off all the time. With 3G only I get over 20 hours battery life consistently with data on.
Am I the only one that can't find this setting? I went to settings and wireless & networks but don't see always on data.Never mind I found it in mobile networks.
Click on mobile networks. It's in there.

I guess I am lucky, I have gotten great battery life even with 4g on. I have noticed if you are in a bad 4g area that toggles to 3g a lot this will kill your battery. I live in a great 4g area and never bounce back and forth.
I've done this on all my android phones, it makes an enormous difference. Android OS keeps an always-on data session, and all the Google services are constantly talking to their servers like gmail, market updater, talk, Google voice, etc. Turn off mobile data with a toggle widget until you actually need data is by far the best way to save huge battery.
Other phones such as the iPhone do not work this way. Instead the data session only initiates when you do some thing that needs it, such as opening the web browser. After closing the browser the data session terminates. Of course push email would keep it on all the time. But stock setup does not.
Android just keeps it on all the time.
What charging bug?

Will have to try this out. One thing Im missing on this phone that I had on my Droidx is power profiles. I made a profile that turned off data after 30 mins. This saved a crazy amount of battery. I cant bring my phone into work, so I leave it in the car.
On the Droid X, if I let it keep the data session always on, Id be down to like 50 percent battery with the phone sitting doing nothing all day (about 9 hrs). By having the data turn off after 30 mins, the phone would be at 80 percent at the end of the day.
I replaced my texting plan with Google Voice. This isn't an option for me.
I usually just leave it on 1X if its just sitting in my pocket and I don't need speed.
Are people seeing good battery gains with all the bloatware removed? I have root but I haven't gotten around to removing the Verizon bloat
edit: Now that I think about it, 1X could be a bigger power drain than EVDO. Hmm
I have to agree no need to turn of data. Use anycut to create a toggle widget and just put it on 3g. I use my phone from moderate to heavy and am still at over 60% on battery that's better than my Droid x. Let's face it 4G eats up battery but seriously when do you need besides when downloading things or for when netflix comes out or tethering. But for just normal use I don't even notice a difference when it comes to browsing.

this is the most retarded thread. why the f would i go and buy a smart phone that is meant for push email and fast 4g internet and disable all that ****. either live with the **** battery life, live with a thicker phone and get a extended battery or return the **** for a dumb phone.
I am not in a 4g area but with my screen brightness turned down and the HTC weather sync turned off I am easily getting a day. I noticed when I look to see what is taking the juice its mainly the screen.

You turn it off for times when you know you need to save power. If I'm out drinking at the bar for 4 hours, kill data and my phone is still at 98% after 4 hours. If I turn it off during a work day I still have 85% after 9 hours. The saving is enormous.
Since its only a 1 click toggle on your home screen, it makes no sense to avoid using this advantage.
Of course 99% of the time I leave data on. But when I know I'll need it, I use it.

Great post, I can see you will be a helpful addition to this community...
Back on topic, guys this phone has been out for what? 2 weeks? Relax, trust me, kernel development was great on the INC, I could easily get a day & a half out of my phone on the stock 1300mah battery. Once we get the kernel source for the TB, and the devs start to work on that, you will notice battery life improve significantly. Until then 4g is a big reason, so keep that off if you don't need it. Syncing always has been, either make it manual sync, or keep it at long updating intervals.
Great post, I can see you will be a helpful addition to this community...
ROTFLMAO!
Definitely gonna try this out.
Hi which activity in anycut do i have to use for this to conserve battery?

Sort of resolved. See last post: *Not* happy about battery life! D2G

I'll try to make this short and to the point. Can someone/anyone tell me which apps to (titanium backup) Freeze to *stop* all blur activity on this phone? I am *so* damn frustrated. My battery life sux0rs.
Some background for you: I started carrying around PDAs 10 years ago. I learned a long time back to be battery (and memory)-thrifty. The last PDA I carried was a Palm Centro.
I kicked it to the curb for the Moto Droid1. LOVED the D1. I got nice battery life out of it: after a day of moderate use (6am off the charger-11pm back on) I still had 70% battery. Yes, I had to tweak and tune it. But, not much. I still ran all day with bluetooth, 3G, wifi, and background data on. ON. I did not sync my email accounts every 30 minutes, more like every 2 or 4 hours. Social apps, manual sync only. 70% full battery at the end of the day. Texting and voice and music streaming.
The the D1 died. Known touchscreen issue. <sigh>
Move into the D2G - OW! Everyday I turn off (freeze) more apps, but there's no change to my battery life. Typically at 3pm I'm at 30 to 40% without even having used the phone other than to wake it to check the time. Grrrrr! Called VZW and they said to turn off "data enabled" in Data Manager. I did and got 90% battery at the end of the day. But what's the point of having a smartphone if you have to manually turn on features?
So, I'm on a hunt, because I think the battery-blasting perpetrator is "MotoBlur."
Am I right?
Can someone tell me which system apps are Blur? I'd like to freeze *all signs* of it.
So, I guess that wasn't short. Sorry. But I still need your help. Please.
Dan
Blur is deeply integrated into the base system. You cannot get rid of it completely. Other than that, DroidForums' Droid 2 Global section has a thread with a CWM script that freezes everything that is possible to freeze on stock.
I got up to 50 hours battery life with that without disabling mobile data or wifi.
I thank you for your reply, Gasai Yuno.
I have searched here for this thread you mentioned using a variety of search terms and I cannot locate it.
Could you post the name of the thread, please? Or a link?
Thanks!
It's a sticky.

The biggest improvement I saw with battery life was using SetCpu to scale back processor speed when the screen is off. It's an old app, so there are probably better ones out there now, but it still works for me.
Comes off charge at 7am, still have 70% at 5pm.
Yesterday I started using SetCPU just to see how well it worked. Right now (12:30 am - came off charger at 9am this morning) I'm at 80% and I can't tell you how delighted I am. Mind you, it's been a very light use day for me.
Dan
I can't get through a full day on my Epic 4g, whereas my wife's completely stock D2G gets through a full day with 50% charge left. Cry me a river...
MUCH better now...
I'm now routinely getting 70%-80% remaining charge at 11pm with moderate phone use. The phone is charging from 11pm to 6:30am.
Here are all the critical settings I have tweaked/toggled.
SetCPU: I have two profiles: 1. when screen off, set cpu speed to 300meg, and 2. when battery below 30% set cpu speed to 300meg.
System settings: screen brightness - manual at 30%, GPS off. Wifi, bluetooth, mobile data toggled on. home/menu/wireless & network/mobile networks/network mode = cdma
Juicedefender Ultimate: when screen off, kill data after 15 minutes and turn off wifi after 15 unless a data transfer (>30KB) is happening and will last more than 1 minute. APN/Wifi activated 1 minute every 15.
Home/menu/data manager: data delivery/background data = on. All other toggles off. Home/menu/data manager/social applications/sync over wifi = on.
home/menu/battery manager/battery mode=performance mode
I also use: Juiceplotter (battery graphic app), and Spareparts (awesome app to monitor what apps are keeping your phone awake).

I rather deleted all .apk using root file explorer.
The biggest improvements ive seen have been running a rom either Angel or Hexen. It basically deletes all the ones you froze, and i run juice defender... I get about a full day w/heavy use ......
I gained some battery life running fission over stock, then I got the extended battery and underclocked the proc to 800mhz max for normal use and finally got full day battery. Now I'm running cm7 and without changing the clock speed I'm getting close to the same battery life.
The biggest gain was the extended batt. Also, using the hard clip on case with holster from the vzw store, I just leave the battery door off and it fits.

No matter what you delete, phone cannot last full day with heavy use. Unless you consider 1-2 hours screen on and data/services/everything disabled, a heavy use. Even with the extended battery.
Phone will last 12(16) hours with normal(extended) battery if on 2.4.330 firmware and in good signal coverage area with data/gps/sync/email enabled, around 30 minutes talking and up to 2 hours screen on. Which is fine and could be called moderate use. Heavy use I call 3+ hours screen on.
Mine would last about 5 hours heavy use (screen on all the time since I am doing something on the phone).
My phone is usually used as a phone, with occasional Twitter/Google+ access, and Endomondo when I'm outside. Everything enabled (WiFi, 3G, GPS, sync).
On stock 2.4.330, rooted, bloatware frozen, I get up to 40 hours on battery.
make sure u dont freeze the email engine cause da could mess up ur text messaging.

Green Power vs JuiceDefender

Hello everyone!
I was just wondering between these two apps...
Which one works better for you and if will be great if you can share your configuration!!
Also, does anyone knows is any of these two disable whatsapp and gmail notifications?
Many thanks for sharing!
Cheers!
IMHO
I can answer about Green Power Premium:
It doesn't have such option like disable notifications. He does such thing like disables data connection for amount of time you chose (for me it is 15min) and then enables data connection for amount of time you choose (for me it is 2min)
Now my Galaxy Note works 2 times longer (from 10h to 20h)

WOW! double time!!
thanks for sharing!
I have been trying both, and while both of them seem to deliver a noticeable reduction in power draw (actually in my case a dramatic reduction), of the two I'd have to give my vote to GreenPower (I'm using the full version). The power reduction is at least as good as Juice Defender Ultimate, and the premium version is significantly cheaper.
Both work by turning various features (mainly Wi-fi/3g/BlueTooth) on and off automatically, but as result can cause delays in things like receiving push-mail and that kind of thing. With Juice-Defender I found this to be quite noticeable, but I'd have to say that with Green-Power I haven't really noticed it slowing down messaging or anything else.......
I've used them both - and deleted them both. I'd rather manage power myself.
i am using 2x Battery for me this is the best. simple and clean.
I usually use JuiceDefender but decided to try out Green Power. I really like it but I have a hard time getting my phone to sleep properly on GP.
i use widgetsoid and just enable my connection when i want it (wifi/3g)
i could never find the proper app that did exactly what i wanted- rather just have control.
going that was and using the phone an average amount my battery goes from 100 -> 75 from the time i wake up (7am) to the time i got to bed (12-1 am)
the 2500mah battery is pretty good!
With JuiceDefender I can get my phone to sleep 95%+ of the time but with GreenPower, my cpu is only sleep 40%+. Can anyone give me tips to get my cpu to sleep more to preserve battery?

Just out of interest, what happens when you browse the web and GreenPower has turned off the Data Connection?
Or you're watching a youtube video and it decides its time to turn off data?
Tried both versions and found green power premium to work better for me. (Price was a good point too.)
However the next day I found that if I left my phone for a while (Around 1 1/2 to 2 hours), the display would not turn on and If I called the phone it would not ring. Only way to fix this was to press the power button for 10 seconds to reset the phone.
Uninstalled green power to see if this was the cause and hasn't happened since.
Was wondering if something similar has happened to other people?
I had to go back to JuiceDefender since I couldn't get my phone to go into deep sleep with GreenPower.
Hi, i went for Green Power. I found it simpler to configure, more focused on the job. Juice Defender has to much possible settings and complexity, this makes it a great tool but might also lead to poor efficiency.
I have never used green power before but im on juice defender. I have experienced auto turn off by the note due to a set cpu settings that govern lower clock to cpu at a certain condition. Due to the big display on note i think lower cpu clock wont do it. Because of that the device turned off itself. Upon failure to operate. Hope this solves your problem
I have tried JuiceDefender but ultimately prefer to do everything manually. Some how I always feel the auto manage apps will have everything off precisely when you need it. I use the SwitchPro widget to quickly enable/disable the various radios from my home screen and it works great.
@ Aldragor
I have/had the same problem. In the beginning I thought that my launcher would be the cause for this problem, but after I disabled my Green Power Premium it hasn't happend since now.
Juice defender ultimate, the feature of switching 2g 3g on stock ROM alone was worth the price!
After figuring out how to config GreenPower properly, I went back to it.
I used JuiceDefender and thought it was great.... when it worked. However, I used it mostly as a scheduler with about 15% battery saving which I took as the icing on the cake.
I want all connections on during the day (peak) so I can take skype calls, etc.. When I'm home, I just want to periodically check for mails, etc (so have connection enable every 15min) and when I go to bed I don't want to be disturbed by emails, messages, etc but still want phone/sms on in case there is an emergency. And most of all, I didn't want to have to manually do that every day.
Problem was that it never really stuck to the schedules. This was the ultimate version but it was a crack as they never offered the ultimate on a trial. I wanted to evaluate the ultimate and buy if it did the job. So, it might have been a bad crack which caused the problem, but I guess I'll never know as I don't want to risk wasting the money if the schedule problem persists.
I am a lover of juice, it keeps he juice in and right

[Q] How do I setup juice defender properly?

Hi folks. I recently bought the juice defender ultimate. I like it, but i find myself turning it on and off often. Simply because i don't get the seemless usage I want out of it. When I stream music and the screen shuts off, then the data also cuts off. Then I don't get emails at the frequency I'd like. I do push e-mails. I assume this is an issue. But it I set my boxes up to update every 5 minutes, would this conflict with the juice defender timer?
Those are my main issues with juice defender. Also, text messages don't come in timely either. Someone please help me set it up better. I'm getting 8-10 hours from my phone with moderate usage.

On Status tab under Profile select advanced.
On Help tab under Help select show.
Read thorough help information included with each feature.
To continue streaming with screen off go to Triggers tab, under Apps select 'enabled' then under Configure tap on the configure apps button. This'll bring up a list of apps. Select the ones that require streaming to operate (Pandora, internet radio, play music, etc.)
One of the main features of JD is to periodically enable data to conserve battery. I've scheduled mine for 15 minute frequency (see under Schedule tab). I don't get emails or social network updates immediately but it doesn't matter to me.
JD shouldn't impact SMS unless you've set JD to turn on airplane mode. This is because SMS doesn't use data.
Took me a while to get things setup properly. Doing so taught me some things. Its interesting to look at battery stats graph and see active toggling at the frequency set in JD.
Have fun!
Here's an example showing JD regularly toggling Wi-Fi. I have it set to thirty minutes in this case.
