Stock ics manual update question! - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, so I'm starting to get impatient with this whole ics ota update getting suspended and have to wait for longer time thing and I'm thinking about manually updating my i9020a Nexus S phone...
But I got some question that I need answer before doing so:
I heard that there's a serious battery issue with ics, is it a huge problem or something minor and something that I won't notice?
If I don't like ics, can I downgrade to gingerbread without rooting?
Is there any risk of anything from losing data to bricking my phone when I try to update to ics manually?
Can you give me a link to the ics rom for i9020a for me?
Is updating manually just to get it early worth it?
Thanks a lot guys! And I'm kinda new to this XDA thing nor I'm a developers, so can you guys maybe give me a tip on how to use this site?

I don't think the i9020a has official ics yet, think it got halted before the rollout to your device but after the other devices

I'm pretty sure it did. Cuz there's a link for that...

It will most likely unroot you, but not remove the ability to regain root. The Nexus does not rely on a security hole to gain root. If they were to lock the bootloader on a Nexus, I'm pretty sure they'd have a riot on their hands.

So I shouldn't update huh lol. I got rid of my evo cuz it wasn't rootable lol

If your rooted and get notified to update and you take it its gonna fail. Have to have to stock recovery to update.

I was considering updating but not if I'm gonna lose my root and have to wait God knows how long like my wife who has the evo

You wont have to wait. Rooting will be the same.you don't have the evo

This is my first time doing an update, so this would be new to me. Forgive me for such a dumb question, but I know root can be regain. What about bootloader, can it still be unlocked? And how about flashing roms, kernels and what not?
That's what I'm worried about. I wanna update but I also wanna know 100% if I can easily root after
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Well Mikey said rooting will be the same, but I'm just worried about flashing roms and kernels. Would that be any difference? Iduno....
Guys... the Evo can't be rooted because it has a SIGNED boot loader... not only because it is locked. The Nexus comes shipped with a locked boot loader, but you can unlock it easily. This update will be the same. Devs should be able to rip apart the update and make a flashable zip for the radio, which will be the biggest change.
^and i CANNOT wait for that! hopefully, and im sure i wont have to hope too hard, that we can get the other goodies that come with the OTA.
Someone already got the new GRJ90
If I want to get the update, should I wait until a custom ROM based on GRJ90 comes out or unroot my phone and install GRJ22 from Sprint back on my phone?

I myself decided to lock/unroot my phone to its factory state just to be safe. I really want this OTA and I assume that EVERY stock NS4G will get the notification and update with no issue.

I usually just wait for the developers to make a flash zip or incorporate into their rom. It usually doesn't take them very long after the update comes out. They do a pretty amazing job of getting it out to everyone.

I'm pretty sure that you made a mistake unrooting. The chances of you being in the 1st day release batch is very slim. The updated rom will probably be on xda before you actually get it pushed to your phone

True. I wouldnt call it mistake tho LOL. If that happens then I will just root again and go from there. I guess you can say that I just want to BE SURE the update will install you know.

Did any i9020a get the ICS OTA update?

Anyone?
Many i9020t and i9023 get the OTA
But I haven't seen any i9020a get that.
Not yet!

I think I am going to wait since the instructions in the other thread seem to be for i9023 and it seems to be giving signature error for i9020a.

Thanks.
I just found that the ROM was for T-MOBILE(TMO)
Hold on
Because of minor difference between two models, i9020a will need to go through some changes for it to function properly. I heard that if you manually update i9020a with i9020t ROM, you will either get an error or it will kill your reception

How many days we should wait for?
A week or a month?

Settle down. It's been one day since Google announced that ICS is rolling out. They said it will be happening over the next month.
Patience.
Just flash the Neapolitan rom and be happy besides with that rom you don't loose cwm and still have root.

Why the i9020a is the last one.(except ns4g)
Maybe because it was the last one to come out...or maybe it is a way to keep from overloading the server. Only other thing I can think is that maybe they are working on a new radio for the att version

Probably a mixture of all these. I have an i9020a and I'm running the neopolitan ROM for now. It's great. I was on stock 2.3.6 with cwm recovery. Just wiped all and flashed it. It kept the bootloader and the radio.
im running the tmo ota on my 9020a with gladosv2.0

No update for 9020a yet, -1 for google

The update should come sometime this month. Since thats when google said thats when i9020a will get the ota update. It also depends on where you are.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA
who needs the ota now when there is so many good roms out there? I think the only advantage to the ota coming out is possibly a new radio that might be better.

It may be this month but Google never said it would be this month. They have never stated when/if the i9020a version is getting ICS. There's a difference between a French website posting false information and Google actually making an announcement. JBQ (from Google) has recently said 4.0.4 is not even finished yet. So I highly doubt 4.0.5 will be released this month before 4.0.4 is finished.

Restarting

My NS4G has been restarting randomly after returning to stock because I thought the OTA would be rolling out shortly. But instead of ICS goodness I get a sh*t sandwhich. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
Hmmmmm ...my conclusion is that your phone hates you! Lol
OT: idk to be honest, might as well stay rooted because someone will immediately make a flashable zip of the OTA once its out lol
Yeah, I was gonna re-crack the bootloader and get a good 2.3.7 ROM for now. Just another example why rooting isn't a bad thing when the stock android gives more problems then a ROM.
Also reception issues which make me wanna hit this thing with a hammer.

I think it is available. I am on 2.3.6 and checked. It said I had an update but servers were busy and it would try again. I tried to check again but now it says I'm updated and I can check again in 24 hours, which is frustrating.
No update. I'm on stock unrooted 2.3.6. Checked and I'm up to date.

Its the same 2.3.6 update that they keep rolling out in waves.
I have the stock GB but rooted with cwm. I got rid of all the att crap with root installer. I took the OTA 'update' and after restart it reported the update failed. Also corrupted my encrypted sd card. dunno why. it won't 'continue update' as grayed out. Especially pissed now as OPs are saying this isn't even the (long awaited) ICS update.
My advice: ignore this update.
I'm waiting for a stable ICS from Samsung to show up on xda; I'll flash that.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App
Can someone edit the thread title to remove ICS from it? It's irking me.
Yes I keep seeing this thread get bumped and want to go insane
Don't be so negative guys. They roll out OTA really slowly. Sometime over a month or two. This might be real.

Go to settings - about tablet at the bottom - all info is there. If your android version is anything other than 4.1.1 then that would be why you're getting tagged for the update.

Personally I would stick with ICS for now. I updated my girlfriends tablet to JB and now the backspace on her dock works intermittently.

If you're up for unlocking the thing, then you can try one of the JB ROMs with the option to return to ICS (even stock ICS) later. I've been running JB since July on AOKP or BAKED BlackBean and love it. Both of those boot with the ICS bootloader so you're able to swap back and forth.
I am also in the same boat I'm on 4.0.3 and just got the update notification. I had updated as soon as I got my tablet but I guess that turn out to be the minor update. Now knowing that I am still on ICS. I was curious to know where I can get information about Rooting my tablet. Also if I am on ICS do I need to unlock the bootloaders?

Look in the Dev section for the debugfs method. This method does not require unlocking. This method only works on ICS.

Yea I think I'm going to stick with ics for the time being, is there anyway to stop the firmware update message from popping out or disable it entirely as I would certainly hate to press the install button by mistake when I'm drunk or something lol
