Restarting - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My NS4G has been restarting randomly after returning to stock because I thought the OTA would be rolling out shortly. But instead of ICS goodness I get a sh*t sandwhich. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Hmmmmm ...my conclusion is that your phone hates you! Lol
OT: idk to be honest, might as well stay rooted because someone will immediately make a flashable zip of the OTA once its out lol

Yeah, I was gonna re-crack the bootloader and get a good 2.3.7 ROM for now. Just another example why rooting isn't a bad thing when the stock android gives more problems then a ROM.
Also reception issues which make me wanna hit this thing with a hammer.

I know the evolution 4g was affected by the gb update...is this new update gonna affect the root on the nexus s 4g?

It will most likely unroot you, but not remove the ability to regain root. The Nexus does not rely on a security hole to gain root. If they were to lock the bootloader on a Nexus, I'm pretty sure they'd have a riot on their hands.

So I shouldn't update huh lol. I got rid of my evo cuz it wasn't rootable lol

If your rooted and get notified to update and you take it its gonna fail. Have to have to stock recovery to update.

I was considering updating but not if I'm gonna lose my root and have to wait God knows how long like my wife who has the evo

You wont have to wait. Rooting will be the same.you don't have the evo

This is my first time doing an update, so this would be new to me. Forgive me for such a dumb question, but I know root can be regain. What about bootloader, can it still be unlocked? And how about flashing roms, kernels and what not?
That's what I'm worried about. I wanna update but I also wanna know 100% if I can easily root after
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Well Mikey said rooting will be the same, but I'm just worried about flashing roms and kernels. Would that be any difference? Iduno....
Guys... the Evo can't be rooted because it has a SIGNED boot loader... not only because it is locked. The Nexus comes shipped with a locked boot loader, but you can unlock it easily. This update will be the same. Devs should be able to rip apart the update and make a flashable zip for the radio, which will be the biggest change.
^and i CANNOT wait for that! hopefully, and im sure i wont have to hope too hard, that we can get the other goodies that come with the OTA.
Someone already got the new GRJ90
If I want to get the update, should I wait until a custom ROM based on GRJ90 comes out or unroot my phone and install GRJ22 from Sprint back on my phone?

I myself decided to lock/unroot my phone to its factory state just to be safe. I really want this OTA and I assume that EVERY stock NS4G will get the notification and update with no issue.

I usually just wait for the developers to make a flash zip or incorporate into their rom. It usually doesn't take them very long after the update comes out. They do a pretty amazing job of getting it out to everyone.

I'm pretty sure that you made a mistake unrooting. The chances of you being in the 1st day release batch is very slim. The updated rom will probably be on xda before you actually get it pushed to your phone

Stock ics manual update question!

OK, so I'm starting to get impatient with this whole ics ota update getting suspended and have to wait for longer time thing and I'm thinking about manually updating my i9020a Nexus S phone...
But I got some question that I need answer before doing so:
I heard that there's a serious battery issue with ics, is it a huge problem or something minor and something that I won't notice?
If I don't like ics, can I downgrade to gingerbread without rooting?
Is there any risk of anything from losing data to bricking my phone when I try to update to ics manually?
Can you give me a link to the ics rom for i9020a for me?
Is updating manually just to get it early worth it?
Thanks a lot guys! And I'm kinda new to this XDA thing nor I'm a developers, so can you guys maybe give me a tip on how to use this site?

I don't think the i9020a has official ics yet, think it got halted before the rollout to your device but after the other devices

Need Help porting T-mobile Nexus

Hi,
This may sound like a very stupid question to most people but I do not know how to solve it. I got my Nexus S (t-Mobile) from a friend a couple months ago. I rooted it and installed Nexus Beam 4.1.0. I was running it perfectly until I was so stupid to decide to try to run stock android 4.0 and unroot. I unrooted with a One-click-unroot. Unfortunately, it put my phone as a Nexus S 4G? Every time I try to install the T-mobile ROM, it aborts in the middle of installation. I will attach a couple pictures to further explain my problem. I just want to get the phone on stock Android running the T-Mobile Baseband. I can assure you this is a T-Mobile Nexus S, and not a Sprint 4G.
Thanks in advance.
Which stock ROM did you use? Maybe you can try rooting it and install Nexus Beam again and see if it still says 4G?
xD dude that's bad ass!.... but sorry about the error lol
- Google
@WindSlash-- Alright. Ill try it. I think its the baseband that I have to change though. Its weird. T-mobile SIM doesnt work on it though as of right now so I am not sure. As for the stock ROM i used, I just followed the steps of this One-Click-Unroot: http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-hacks/how-to-unroot-nexus-s-i9020ti9020ai9023/
@iGoogleNexus Hahaha I guess...I'm not sure if it works with Sprint though. If it did, then that would be pretty sweet, even though I have T-mo haha
Wow lol um you'll probably have to root again and flash the right radio you had before. Damn I don't know lol I've never seen anything like this.
Remember to have the right clockworkmod version!! Very important, sometimes these guides give you the wrong recovery. If you look through my post, it happened to me 2 weeks ago, I tried to unroot and I totally messed up

[Q] New OTA Update

Got the new OTA update this week on Skyrocket on my rooted phone. It will down load but when it reboots to install it starts up in in Clockworkmod screen so does not Install. What can I do to install update????
Please search the forums before posting nonsense. You can't receive OTA updates using a custom recovery. You need to be stock. Odin back to stock ICS and then try.

Go to Here and return the device to complete stock (unrooted) form then apply update... remember, if your happy with your device the way it is I wouldn't bother
Thanks Guys. Sorry about posting again before I read other posts of the same. Will just leave it as is till Jelly Bean comes out as one of you suggest. Thanks Again...
I also got the OTA show up on my phone. I do not intend on unrooting and installing at the moment but am curious what the update is for. Anyone know? ATT of course has nothing on their site.

new OTA update
I also received an ota update this morning. The only reason I had my skyrocket rooted was so I could try out the jelly bean roms. restored to stock and now my phone is telling me that the software is up to date and wont let me get the ota again. Does anyone know how I can get it to show up again. By the way I am a noob with this kind of stuff

Why are people in these forums so rude to someone who is just asking a simple question? Because I would like to have my GS2 on a full jelly bean firmware that's not buggy and that is not ICS. I've tested the full jelly bean on another device and it is a lot smoother and definitely better in all aspects than ICS. In my opinion anyway.

This isn't a jellybean upgrade tho. Its just some enhancements and a new modem to ICS.
So, I don't WANT the upgrade, but Device management keeps loading up and won't go away unless I hit the home key. It keeps popping up and won't be satisfied until I download the upgrade, which I do not want to do. Is there any way to turn it off?

How is that rude? I asked why you would go through the trouble to get such a minor stock update. This isn't jb, man. It's a maintenance update. Chill out
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
JB hasnt even officially been released for the Galaxy S3 and the chances of SR getting it before S3 is 0.004855% and there is no "official" word on if its even going to come out for Skyrocket yet alone if ATT will go through with it. They did say Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE but that can also mean just the international version or whatever.
Remember it has to go through Samsung then ATT.
Your best bet for JB right now is the AOSP based ones.

He's not being rude, that was a legitimate question. I would ask the same. And trust me, a small update like this one wouldn't be JB. Sad, but you can get that idea out of your head. Besides, I'd scream if the SR got official JB before the S3

Look at post #17 here
I had the same question, already owned Titanium Backup and did freeze it. No more nagging.
I just flashed the update that cdshepered posted on another thread and I ddnt have to revert back to stock works fine for me plus and increase in cell signal

Yep, I'm fully stock with the update and I definitely noticed an uptick in speed.

May be a dumb question?

If I took the 4.3 update and Im on a custom unlock according to bootup, am I able to do anything as far as custom recovery's and or rom's? Im a flashing addict and I fear that taking this 4.3 update has screwed the potential I used to have lol. I know there are forums on the update and some news but I'm trying to get it narrowed down could someone be of assistance?

The only recovery you can use is safestrap and the only roms you can use are TouchWiz 4.3 roms.

Yup your screwed. Everyone says you can use tw roms but u cant. Ohh you can root and put safestrap on it. And create rom slots but when u flash one it just goes to a black screen. So yes. Your flashoholic days are over my friend. Trust me. Im stock now. 4.3 JB. Yup. Randomly shuts down, freezes, battery last about an hour. Throw your phone as hard as u can at a verizon rep

Where did you hear this? I highly doubt we're going to get the update, even if the international version is going to get it It'll be months afterwards before Verizon even thinks about pushing an update to us. They really have no incentive to push a kit-kat build to us.
