I am thinking of getting either the Atrix 2 or the Atrix 4G on ATT, the A2 is basically $100 more and the hardware seems very similar. You get a bigger screen, and a better camera...but I could convince myself I would prefer the form factor of a smaller one and don't care too much about the camera. The processors are different...but spec out about the same.
Plus, with the bootloader unlocked on the 4G...all of the software advantages pretty much go it's way.
Anybody got a case for the A2?

OG will only get ics ported. ATRIX 2 will get the real deal.

I am not going to give you a bunch reasons why to go get this phone, because it is personal thing, and the decision is yours.
I will give you two things to think about.
1) The Atrix has an unlocked bootloader and can run a ton of ROMS, and kerenels. There will not be a lot of tinkering and playing, since it has all been done before.
2) The Atrix 2 is only 75 days old, or so, from release date. Not all of the hacking has even been found yet, and we are a small group here, that has not been tainted yet with a lot of bad stuff. So there is a lot of tinkering and playing yet to be done. If you like that sort of thing, then.... We are going to have our first ROM early next week, I am thinking of releasing it.
I know after I showed my Atrix2 to my co-worker who has the Atrix, he went out and bought it has done nothing but tell me how much more he likes it than his original Atrix. Utlimately, like Jim said, it will come down to personal preferrence, if you get it from AT&T, you get 30 days to try it out. I know that I personally love this phone, even in its "unmodded" state.
@jimbridgman: I do like to tinker...I am an Electrical Engineer by trade. Although I have done quite a bit of software development on various platforms, I have never tinkered much in the mobile world. I understand the devices on a very low chip to chip level...and on a very high software level, but could probably use the hands on to try to pick up some of the implementation details in between. That might be what wins me over in the end.
@tylercarter: Also good point about ICS
As you could probably see by my wording...I am leaning that way I just need a push. Thanks for your replies
Go play with both if them in a local AT&T store. The differences stock are very apparent when messing around with them. The ATRIX 2 wins pure stock and the screen is awesome but put some customization on the OG ATRIX and it really comes alive.
Just depends on how patient you can be and which one serves you best as they are both good choices.
Ok, I got the ATRIX 2 and you guys are right...it is blazing fast. Now what I need is reading material that sumerizes the dev process. Is the bootloader propriotory? Is it locked with a pin held high, some software method(mda hash or something ). I need like a high level description of the problems...I can help.

Well, yes the bootloader is locked, and we are looking for an unlocked one in the dev section here.

Welcome to the fold, and check out the thread for those new to this phone, it is helpful.

This will be my first android phone. I've been researching android phones and reading threads all over this forum for awhile now, and its time for one. I've changed my mind so many times I can't count. I have several phones in mind...
Motorola Atrix-I like how its dual core, but I've read that it is locked and can't be rooted...But it seems like it would last a long time before needing an upgrade.
Motorola Bravo-I like this phone alot, it's perfect size for me...main problem is that I'm not sure how rootable it is and how hackable it is.
I mainly want a phone with the ability to take all the crap att loads on the rom and make it faster, and have the ability to custimize it and load third party apps and such...
You my friend are in luck when it comes to knowing rootablity
Got this through Lifehacker earlier today

I can't vouch 100% on accuracy, but it seems pretty good.
As for how "good" of a device you need just ask yourself what you are going to do with it and settle for what's available now, there will always be a honeymoon phase followed buy the buyers remorse when you see the new cooler thing in a month or so. but then you will learn to love the one you chose.

Good find. I wonder where the HTC Inspire falls on that list...seems like it's rooted? Would absolutely be my choice on AT&T at the moment, despite the Atrix being more powerful.
The Inspire looks like a great phone, but it's pretty big and I dont have big hands so I'm not sure it would be very easy to use the phone, such as texting...
Xperia Arc is a good choice!
Well if you're picking between the two, the Atrix should be a great phone for what you want. Of course, the Galaxy S 2 should be coming out next month (not so sure about the states) and that's going to be a "better" phone overall. IMO of course.
I had the Atrix and ended up taking it back because of the locked bootloader, bad cameras, and overall "clunky" build. Here's hoping to a better phone being released soon.

I have to agree. Although it's not dual core, it performs very well. And the camera is great, with a dedicated button, which not many phones have today.

As above
I'm getting a straight trade +100~
Would out be worth it? Sounds nice......but.....its locked down and still only on froyo :/

What its a straight trade +100~?
If you are getting atrix plus $100 then there is your answer, but if you are throwing in $100 with your captivate then no its not worth it.

I hava an Atrix and a Captivate. I love both phones. He is right though, its not worth it. I would say that you should wait, hold off a few months and wait for the SGS II. AT&T has a variant coming sometime this year, and with the rollout of their LTE network starting this summer, you have to imagine that the SGS II would be a great canidate to be one of their 1st LTE enabled phones (that's personal opinion, not based on any verified info). Aside from that, the performance differences between the two phones is noticable, but not DRASTIC. Having actual, working GPS is nice, and some of the other features are cool, but honestly I would say wait.

well TBH, I don't really mind about the SoC other than the fact that its a dual and it would be significantly better than the single core that my captivate has.
and I don't live in the states, so I"m not really affected about LTE and such since we don't have LTE or anything where I live.
what I am worried about is the locked bootloader and such cause I can safetly run gingerbread on my captivate, but I won't be able to be on gingerbread once I'm on the atrix and my ROM choices and tweakign and such will be very limited until we can get the bootloader unlocked since motorola is such an ass to lock it.
I'm still debating this....with half of me saying "no" and half of me saying "yes"
does your atrix "feel faster or smoother" compared to the captivate?

Ahh, then yea all the AT&T stuff is kinda irrelevant, lol. The rom choices out there are minimal due to the bootloader encryption, obviously, but there is a HELL of a lot of working going on to fix that. Don't want to speak too soon but we may be close. Khoulk, tenfar, TBH, and a bunch of others are working on it. The Atrix is faster and smoother, yes, but we still don't even have an ETA for Gingerbread.

I would check online to see what the going rate for a used captivate is before offering it up + 100 for the Atrix. Compare that to the price for an off-contract atrix and you'll have your answer as to whether or not its a "fair" trade, value wise. Comparing the two phones to each other depends on how much you value aftermarket development. I'm a hardcore themer and that's why I kept my cappy. I haven't released anything for the Atrix yet, and I've had it almost since launch. I was able to get the Atrix through work at no cost, so it was win-win for me. Hardware wise, it is superior (except for the screen. Super Am. beats out the qhd 960x540 IMO). Development wise, there's no contest. Cappy is on Gingerbread. End of discussion. Its a trade-off either way. That's why I said wait for the SGS II to become available whereever you're at: dev friendly + hardware that is equal to or bettan than the atrix is almost every way. They're both great phones, IMO... but the SGS II is gonna be even better. And some phone that no one knows about that will be announced 2 months from now will be even better than the SGS II, lol.

I definitely wouldn't do it - the Captivate just has so much more to offer with a thriving developer community. The Atrix is supposedly on the verge of being rooted, but it will likely take awhile for things to really boom (and there's no telling when the root will even be successful). I have a few friends with the Atrix, and while it looks to be a decent phone, most complain about battery life and call quality.
I'm no fanboy - I'd jump ship from the Captivate tomorrow if the price was right and hardware/software looked to be legit, but right now the Captivate feels like one of the best possible phones a regular user and geek can have.

The devs have already rooted the phone I think. They are trying to unlock the bootloader.
Don't do it OP. After messing around on an Atrix for awhile, it is a good phone but feels a little finnicky.
A captivate on GB feels a lot smoother than a stock Froyo Atrix IMO.
My opinion you would be paying for a downgrade

I'm digging the front facing camera, the working GPS, and the resolution bump.
The atrix doesn't run as hot when playing games (my backplate used to burn me) or when running GPS and the battery last considerably longer.
What do you do on your phone? If you read more news and the like, the screen is great. If you watch more movies on your phone, then you might like the sammy screen better.
The fingerprint reader is nifty as well.
I am weary of samsung's gps on the infuse and the SGS II so I will steer clear..

In the end it's your decision. The only way you can really go wrong is if you went to the extremely locked down iphone. Enjoy your new atrix my friend.
don't do it! I have a captivate and I just bought an atrix for $300 and was planning on selling my captivate. But after using the atrix for a couple of days I decided to sell the atrix instead. It is just a bad user experience. Mainly because of the screen and the lack of response. Whenever I would use the slider to slide through contacts, it would lose track of my finger and call someone on accident. Also it is an eyesore to look at when you are scrolling.

Im canadian, so unfortunately i can't help you in the carrier department however ill share my opinion on the devices with you.
1- Bad battery, lacklustre reviews id personally stay away, haven't heard anything exceptional about this device.
2- Personally owned this device, it sucks; stay away. Phone lags a lot doing simple things because of the awful sense 3.0. Phone Does not even feel worthy of its dual core status.
3- Best choice out of these three imo, this is strictly from reading reviews. Engadget just reviewed this today; looks like a solid device actually. http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/15/motorola-photon-4g-review/

Hi unleased12,
Thanks for your response. Yea, I have been doing a lot of research. As a matter of fact, I owned the HTC Sensation for 8 days. During that time frame, I did notice the lagging and it was only when I rooted and flashed a custom ROM, did it perform like it should. It was blazing fast but I returned it before the 14 days so I could give other phones a shot.
I really liked the Sensation's performance AFTER flashed with a custom ROM which stil had Sense 3.0 on it, but the kernel had been tweaked and I had it overclocked to 1.5GHz.
I really like the look of the Photon but I am wondering if it will have the support of XDA developers as far as custom ROMs go.
I will go ahead and read that review you posted. Thanks!
PS. Any other phone worth waiting for in the next few weeks?

Curious towards this, what rom did you flash on your sensation to make it fast? haha i tried a couple custom roms and the phone still didn't even come close to my Galaxy s II.
As for the photon dev support, its really hard to say as most MOTO phones have locked boot loaders. But then again the atrix is starting to get some love as people unlocked its BL. As far as dev support goes HTc and samsung are the best, imo.

I had flashed the Android Revolution HD 1.1.7 HD ROM and set it to run at 1.5GHz. It was TEARING up all the benchmarks! On CF Bench, I was scoring higher than a Galaxy S II!!
I "think" the Photon has already been rooted, but not sure. I really liked the HTC Sensation but it would have to be really the BEST available right now to make me go with TMobile. The problem with TMobile is the imminent merger with ATT.
I would say PHOTON for sure. And as for development...this phone has been out for only a week to 10 days now and already has bootloader unlocked. AND...AND...AND...with the acquisition of Google and Motorola today, I would say things are REALLY LOOKING UP!!

Yea, that is exactly what I was thinking... But I keep reading reviews talking about this PenTile technology used in the display and some say it degrades the image. Anyone know anything about this or is it just nitpicking?
I personified have the Evo 3d I think it is fantastic. The processor ks extremely fast 1.2 gigahertz if I recall right and you can't go wrong with 3d although for a power user you'll get an extremist short battery life like 5 hrs the photon is great I kinda wish k could go To it now.because they have a new accessory for it that has a full size key board and a mouse the phone goes on a stand and.you have the option to plug the phone.into a tv. Then you.can use it as a full computer. The set up is only 135$ after tax in store. As for carrier you should go with Sprint. The unlimited data is with Sprint within extra fees. Now.I know there's the $10 fee but I say you pay for the hardware. 4g is great if its available in your area. T-mobi has to many problems with signal. Anyone I know at dorms can't get signal inside if they do its terrible. So i recommend going with Sprint and if your worried abluo battery then go with photon if not and don't care about the keyboard go with EVO 3D I hope this helps

Nitpicking.
I think the screen is fantastic.
if you are interested in modding your phone, you should also consider the community sizes of each phone.
bigger community = more development = more roms and kernels = more customization
photon has the least (so i wouldnt consider this)
evo 3d has a slightly bigger community than the sensation
Now that the droid Rzr has been confirmed with the same TI OMAP 4430 chip set that the Atrix 2 has, its looking to me like a brother to us. My question is, do you guys think that with the Rzr being launched internationally and Motorola saying international versions will have an unlockable bootloader, that develepment will help us just as much as our Bionic brothers have? Would say they all 3 are very similar with the A2 and Rzr having the edge with the better display?
Any thoughts or am I just bored at work and rambling on LoL?
Who knows? I'm still enjoying the root goodness on an A2

When I first heard about this (earlier this afternoon) that's exactly what I thought. I also imagine as soon as we can get out bootloader unlocked that our phone won't be much slower than the RAZR since we're gonna be able to open up the cpu to it's capability, 1.2GHz baby! I can only see the incredible amount of developing for the RAZR helping us.
Loving my A2, came from a Droid X day and night in performance.
well coming from the OG and still having it, I remember the developers saying 1.2-1.3 ghz was gonna b Max n now they are at 1.5ghz! I've kept mine at 1.3 but if we can get the same performance out of the A2 we will have a serious contender here I believe .
Yes but the OG Atrix still had issues of Not utilizing Both Cores quite right if you look at the Notes on the Kernel's. Or at least last I saw there was a bug there. One MAJOR Flaw with the RAZR from what I have read is Lack of Being able to Remove and Replace the Battery. Well I Assume you could take the thing apart and replace it but not having an actual Battery Door for Extended batteries and what not just sounds like a Horrid idea especially when some batteries are flawed etc.
Think you misunderstood me, was just stating we could probably borrow info from the RZR the same way we have from the Bionic. The OG was just another phone until here lately and now it is starting to really shine. If the A2 can be tapped to its true potential its really gonna be one heck of a sleeper!!!!

The Razr's inability to remove the battery is not a flaw, it's a necessary part of the design serving two purposes. First it allows the unit to be sealed making it extremely water resistant. Second it adds structural integrity to the unit reinforcing the thin steel frame and gorilla glass. Without sealing it the phone could not be that thin. The choice is simple, for people that want a phone that thin and strong it must be bonded. I personally don't see the need for that and am with you that I prefer a phone that I can change batteries on. That being said I would bet they have a quick and easy way to remove and replace that battery that can't be done in the field.

I agree totally. The hardware specs for the Razr are spot on with the Atrix 2 (minus some storage memory). I think as the Razr becomes all the rage with the beautiful people all the code written for it will just fall to us.

Couldn't agree with you more
Or its the other way around they take the stuff from the excellent devs here
Donation accepted towards an Atrix 2
Probably you guys will be able to port ROMs to the Atrix 2 from the BIONIC & the RAZR & the other way around
I mean People are porting the Atrix's ROMs into the Photon 4G & the DROID X2 , since they are ALMOST identical inside , You guys might be able to do the same with the Atrix 2 \ BIONIC \ RAZR
I think you might even be able to unlock the Bootloader that way , since the Developers tried the way they unlocked the Atrix's on the Photon & It worked
Looks like preorder for GS3 on June 6.
Anybody jumping ship.?

I am going to, if I can. The multitasking problems, the locked bootloader/s-on stuff, the 2GB RAM on the GS3 are the main reasons. I looked at some very close-up pictures of the GS3's screen compared to the HOX and Captivate (the two phones I've owned), and I think I can live with pentile at that resolution, although I'd still prefer the HOX screen.
Oh well, there's never one phone that gets everything right. If I end up stuck with the HOX I won't really be upset...it's a great phone. I just think there are enough small factors adding up to convince me to switch if Wal-Mart/ATT will let me. I'll find out tomorrow.
Not in the slightest. As an owner of the HOX and also the Note, the difference between Sammy's Pentile and the HOX is astounding. Take a look at the SGS3 and HOX in direct sunlight before making a decision. Also, angled viewing is bothersome at best.
The only solid leg-up that the SGS3 retains over the HOX(L) is the MicroSD slot. Is it worth jumping ship to get an extra GB of RAM (which I highly doubt anyone will use), a MicroSD slot and a second-rate display? That's a personal question, I suppose. Personally, for me, I would say no.
Also, with regard to S-OFF: Why do you need S-OFF so badly? We can write kernel images without s-off and it appears we may be able to write to the radio block device as well.
I've thought about it, being as I've always had a Sammy. Buy I'm loving this phone and wanna give HTC an honest chance. The phones are near identical internally. Sammy has more ram and possibly a bigger battery depending on the carrier variations, but I'm effin loving this screen. Coming from a gnex this screen easily destroys all. Dev is popping up very quick. Bootloader is unlocked. We have workarounds for s-off and kernel flashes. The only irk I have is the radio blackouts that I gotta airplane mode to fix, which will be fixed. Plus having owned many Sammy I know how awful and slow there software support and version upgrades have been in the past.

+1 to this.
It also astounds me how many people are so wishy-washy and can't make their own decisions about what device to keep. So many threads about "should I buy this phone" or "should I return it" on here and other device forums. It feels like the OP want someone to hold their hand, and make decisions for them. Just do the research, compare the phones in person, and make your own decision. Its not rocket science.
And every device has flaws. I don't care if its made by HTC, Samsung, Apple or whatever. No electronic device is ever perfect. Are you going to get the GS3 and start threads on whether you should return that too? I bet there will be plenty of those types of threads, too.

I know what you mean, but I can understand the other side, too. Many (most?) people don't have the spare cash to buy a phone off-contract, ever. They have to make a decision, soon, and then live with the consequences for two years. Coming from two years with a Captivate, which was a nice device with some nasty flaws, I can relate to the anxiety.
BTW, thanks again for taking the time to write a long and helpful answer to my root/unlocking question!
I'd keep my one X if I didn't have my data drop every few minutes, if my wifi didn't do the same, that's is just unacceptable from anything you buy. Imagine buying a car that would turn off every 5 minutes, and you have to wait for the dealer to say 'Ok, we got a solution, now you can fix it'. I can't wait forever for a software update, and that's HOPING that's the problem. I use my phone for business and it's costing me money.

Hahahahahahahahahahahhahahaha
no.
I like the HOX but I'm probably off this ship. HTC needs to stand up for itself in the American market, but the locked bootloader feels like ATT was throwing its weight around a bit here. Yes, the android dev community finds ways around 99% of things, but I'm still waiting for either an official bootloader unlock from ATT or a new 1.85 root exploit so I can run SuperCID and get in on some of these ROMs that are cookings. Unfortunately for me, I was having huge data drop issues on 1.82 and I went to 1.85 hoping it would be the fixer. It's not bad but...I have a feeling some of the roms (Nocturnal and CleanRom look amazing) fix this issue. While I don't mind using ADB to push things to my phone...and I can follow directions pretty easily, there are just some things I didn't feel confident doing, like using a Hex Editor to spoof my CID that way....so if you're on the Locked, Stock 1.85 ship, it's a pretty awful ship to be on. The HOX is a great phone, but the lack of stock to get a new unit (perhaps it was a hardware defect) to get to rooted, unlocked 1.85 had me going back to an iPhone in an instant. Hopefully either HTC or ATT has an actual solution which makes getting to ROM land even better, because it's a damn shame to see this phone in such a precarious situation.
The SGS3 seems like where I'm headed because on the whole, I've just had much more pleasant experiences with Sammie devices. With a few minute differences (slightly different low-light camera performance, and minutely visibility differences in super-direct sunlight), they're the same phone, one just has a larger battery and expandable storage.
If I was a mod, you guys would be in trouble.

No. The HTC One X is superior. It's faster in almost all benchmarks, I think on the review from engadget it lost in one benchmark to the SIII and it was barely. The screen is, in my opinion, way better. The physical phone itself is way nicer looking and I like the fact that it's constructed from poly.
no. ill leave it at that. the many reasons have been listed many times on here.

Some gs2 had the same issue, I know the sprint variation has signal issues requiring a reboot. So Sammy isn't absolved of this either. And I'm on your amside at work my signal is always requiring a airplane mode reboot.. but it'll get fixed. I'll rage until then, but hey it happens.

The silver sticker above the beats logo on the back. Can that be removed or is it stamped on there? It's one ugly eye sore.

It's just an imei sticker, you can remove it, you have spares.
While I'm sure some people are genuinely curious, a majority of these threads are being made by indecisive people that are insecure about their choice and want to feel backed up.
We should all know the pros and cons to both of these phones right now.
Yeah I'm trying to find out as much as I can. Get nervous cause all these complaints about light leak and dead pixels. Still think I'm going to go with the one x . It's a great looking phone.
