How to use a feature question. - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I saw this on T.V. can someone please explain to me how it works, please

You do that via office.live.com, using the OneNote web app. I'm not sure if it actually updates in real tome or not, you might have to do manual refreshes. Basically, create a new note on SkyDrive, then open the Office hub on your phone and open that note.

Remote desktop

Anyone know of a remote desktop app that you can write a message on the screen from anywhere? I'm talking about when I'm at work I can make a message appear without a special app.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
I believe there is a paid appp called remote desktop in the market, but I think it is something like $30. It is actually called remote desktop. Hope that helps.
Thanks will check it out.

Good app but doesn't work with Mac, any other suggestions.

This is what I use to log in to my media server. Both app and software you install are connected to your gmail so its stupid easy to connect. Although I'm not sure if thats particularly what you're looking for.

Thanks for the info, this is the one I'm currently but I don't see a way to write a message without opening up a sticky note.

Pdf files

Hey guys this may have been asked before but I don't know if I can search using the xda app. Is there a way to open pdf files in the browser. When I click on the link that opens the file it just brings up a blank screen. Any way around this?
Thanks everyone

Is anyone else even having the same problem?
Yes you can search, both in the xda app you are using ( but it won't limit to just one section), and also on the website.
As far as pdf files go... it just auto downloads them whenever I click one.
Sent from my Inspire '4g'.
After downloading them, should be able to open them with the included Adobe Reader app no?
Well the specific website I'm trying to open the file from opens it in a pop up window rather than downloading. The pop up window comes up however it is just s blank white window. On a pc it's in this window that I can save the pdf file however I can't do that on my inspire. I've had windows mobile smartphones for the past few years and this is my first android device.

Yes, I'm having the same problem with specific websites. I have one that I would love to download pdf's from and I get the blank website just like you. Even switched to Dolphin browser (which I really like generally), and I have the same issue with this particular website. Anyone have a solution?
try a 3rd party browser. maybe dolphin or opera mobile.

[Q] Google doc app in Market

Can Somebody try the app out on the transformer? And is it optimized for honeycomb?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
Ive read in reviews there is alread an app on the tablet pre installed that is compatible with google docs
It is not optimised for tablets, essentially it's just the website in a browser window.
greetz
Thanks for the notice on this new application. From the comments on the market it doesn't look like it is optimized for tablets, but I'm interested to hear from current Transformer owners on how it functions.
Talks about the pre installed one here http://www.anandtech.com/show/4277/asus-eee-pad-transformer-review/8

"If you supply your Google login credentials you can edit/save documents stored in the cloud."
Excellent.
I wouldn't say excellent. Google Docs is much more than storage. I hope Google will fix the Android browser to be able to work with Google Docs without any apps. Dual booting Google Chrome OS would be great too.

It is indeed just opening the docs up in a browser. At first I had a login issue because it hadn't passed authentication yet and I briefly saw the Google Docs mobile login site on it. It has the exact same functionality as if you had opened the Doc up in the browser. It's just a pretty interface to the Google Docs site
Just tried it on my eee pad. It works fine but as stated before it's not optimised layout-wise for honeycomb. Does what its meant to do though.
With the Google Docs app, you can take pictures of text and have it converted to an editable document. My question if anyone has tried it yet is this.......If you take a picture with text AND a picture, does it import the pic also?
I get my Transformer in the a.m. tomorrow, and if no one can answer this, I will try it when I get a chance and follow-up, in case anyone else is interested.

Most of these guys are kind of slow. There is an actual app that is not via the browser. I'm not sure if its optimized for HC but my guess is yes, why wouldn't they make it for all platforms. I used it today on my EVO so I'm positive it works on HC.
Yea it's a application in the market. I hope that's what people are responding about. Also the app works well on my g2 for whatever that's worth.

Could not find a way to edit existing docs - no edit button, while newly created and saved document can be edited. Also was able to edit spreadsheet loaded before

I think the confusion is that the front end of the Google docs app where you browse your docs is NOT from the web, it's an actual UI from the app itself. However, once you start viewing a doc or editing it, you are then basically thrown back into the mobile Google Docs webpage, which has very limited functionality.
What I'm saying is, don't expect it to replace a dedicated Office suite anytime soon...
I think on tablets Google Docs should work without problems in browser. That it does not right now shows that the browsers are very limited and similar web apps won't work neither.

Android app like "side by side"?

I have a need for this app; it's called "side by side" and it's only on iPad.
Here is the verbage from the youtube video:
Side by Side is a multiple-screen reader/browser with offline reading and note taking capabilities. It turns one iPad into 1 to 4 devices working in parallel.
You can browse webpages, download files, read documents, or take notes on each split screen.
It allows you to have multiple apps running side by side on the screen....
Any android app that will do this?
agreed
I would love to have an app like this for android.
I'm really hoping someone has or is in the middle of creating this type of app for honeycomb.

Multitasking and running 2 apps next to each other is hardly the same thing.

Yes...that would be the point. Switching apps is not the same thing.
Specifically, I'd like to be looking at one app while taking notes on the other side of the screen....

I think we'd all love to know what technology/trickery you are using to make one eye focus on your notes while the other eye focusses on another app. Totally unrelated ofc, but you made me think of THIS video.
Nothing like this exists that I'm aware of... so far. Unless you are using some remote desktop software and accessing a pc/mac. Most ipad apps seem to get ported over so I'm sure we'll see it in the future.

Unfortunately, these guys are only selling their software to OEM's, so the chance of buying it from the market are zero... you'll have to buy a new device with the software built-in. I hope someone will be able to hack and extract the software to run on our tablets - this solution is WAY better than side-by-side as it allows for real apps to be run in each window (not just a simple browser or notepad).

Yep...that's exactly it....
Hopefully somebody hacks it eventually.

Just FYI the "Side-by-side" app doesn't actually allow you to run multiple apps side-by-side, it only allows you do a limited number of specific tasks (web browsing/note taking) that are baked into the app.
To override an application's screen context would require extensive changes to the Android framework (and similar changes to iOS but no-one but Apple has access to the source for iOS) and would only happen as a full custom build of the OS (Like the "EDEN" system of the Notion Ink Adam)

CANNOT OPEN FILE error message

My college daughter just got herself a Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. She has Office Suite installed.
When she downloads a .doc file and taps on it to open, she gets the error above (CANNOT OPEN FILE). If she opens OfficeSuite and select this file it opens without a problem. It does not happen with .pdf files for example.
Any idea what it might be and how to fix this?
Thanks.
I dont use that software but, my guess would be go into settings, manage apps, then look for office suite program. Click on clear defaults. Now when she clicks on a .doc it should ask her what app she would like to use to open it.

I tried that, it didn't help. It's not even getting to a point where she is asked to select an app to open the file, it just says CANNOT OPEN FILE and it says that about any .doc file.
Im at a loss, you could try google quick office. It is supposed to be quite good. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck.

Thanks. As I said, we don't even get to the option of selecting which app to use, it just point blank tells us "cannot open".
