[Q] Google doc app in Market - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can Somebody try the app out on the transformer? And is it optimized for honeycomb?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App

Ive read in reviews there is alread an app on the tablet pre installed that is compatible with google docs

It is not optimised for tablets, essentially it's just the website in a browser window.

Thanks for the notice on this new application. From the comments on the market it doesn't look like it is optimized for tablets, but I'm interested to hear from current Transformer owners on how it functions.

Talks about the pre installed one here http://www.anandtech.com/show/4277/asus-eee-pad-transformer-review/8

"If you supply your Google login credentials you can edit/save documents stored in the cloud."
Excellent.

I wouldn't say excellent. Google Docs is much more than storage. I hope Google will fix the Android browser to be able to work with Google Docs without any apps. Dual booting Google Chrome OS would be great too.

It is indeed just opening the docs up in a browser. At first I had a login issue because it hadn't passed authentication yet and I briefly saw the Google Docs mobile login site on it. It has the exact same functionality as if you had opened the Doc up in the browser. It's just a pretty interface to the Google Docs site

Just tried it on my eee pad. It works fine but as stated before it's not optimised layout-wise for honeycomb. Does what its meant to do though.

With the Google Docs app, you can take pictures of text and have it converted to an editable document. My question if anyone has tried it yet is this.......If you take a picture with text AND a picture, does it import the pic also?
I get my Transformer in the a.m. tomorrow, and if no one can answer this, I will try it when I get a chance and follow-up, in case anyone else is interested.

Most of these guys are kind of slow. There is an actual app that is not via the browser. I'm not sure if its optimized for HC but my guess is yes, why wouldn't they make it for all platforms. I used it today on my EVO so I'm positive it works on HC.

Yea it's a application in the market. I hope that's what people are responding about. Also the app works well on my g2 for whatever that's worth.

Could not find a way to edit existing docs - no edit button, while newly created and saved document can be edited. Also was able to edit spreadsheet loaded before

I think the confusion is that the front end of the Google docs app where you browse your docs is NOT from the web, it's an actual UI from the app itself. However, once you start viewing a doc or editing it, you are then basically thrown back into the mobile Google Docs webpage, which has very limited functionality.
What I'm saying is, don't expect it to replace a dedicated Office suite anytime soon...

I think on tablets Google Docs should work without problems in browser. That it does not right now shows that the browsers are very limited and similar web apps won't work neither.

google reader . Which is the best

I have tried so many google reader apps. But could not find one thats really good
In iphone i have newsrack - Very good one and has nice preview of images with each icon.
Feedsquare is one with similar fns but sync is terrible
Any suggestions.
I like greader. It reminds me of the mobile site, and is very easy to navigate.
Did you tried Newsrob?
I used to use Newsrob, but now I've switched to using the Reader mobile site - it's great. No good for you if you need offline reading of course, but it gets my vote
I think they all SUCK. I don't have a lot in my list, perhaps 12 sources, half of them news, other tech stuff. And syncing in every Greader app I've found takes forever, often either downloading some X number of total articles and skipping ALL the rest (wtf??) or downloading thousands of articles. Hello, X number of new articles?
So I just read in the default browser, it works great, but obviously it's not offline... Don't try it in Opera, it renders horribly.
Using the Greader site, works ok.
But since I'm using Feedly (Firefox extension) on my laptop I'm really looking forward to their Android app that should be released shortly.
NewsRob works for me.

Newsrob does not give a thumbnail in the list view.
This i find very useful.
See the attached image to see what i mean
Shortcut to the mobile page for me.
gReader is the best in my opinion, tried most everything.
I don't like gReader, it's too damn iPhony. This is Android, no clue why the dev follows Apple's GUI guidelines here lol
Anyway, my vote goes to FeedR, slick and fast. Although if I haven't purchased it, then I would just use the mobile site.
Looking forward to an official app from Google.
Yup, another vote for the mobile site here.
The big problem for me with the Android apps is that they only do the feeds and not the shares from friends (e.g. shares from Google Buzz).
have u all try feedR? i think it's the best from all google reader apps i've tried

Maybe because Android doesn't have a good GUI guideline? Have you noticed how inconsistent Android apps are?

There is a good ui guidline for Android. There is one also for icons, widgets, and what not. Check out the Android Dev site. It doesn't have to be very detailed and covers everything, but it sure preserves the Android style and atmosphere which is NOTHING like gReader.

[Q] Google Books Storage Location

Does anyone know the location of an eBook once you tell it to make it available offline?
Or
I've got some eBooks that I would like to make available to the Books app on the XOOM, where do I put them?
You beat me to it, I was just wondering the same. I have several thousand books I would like to be able to drop in.

It appears to be a proprietary book format, but I don't know enough about it for sure.
Each book is split up into many different files. I've transfered it to my computer to investigate it further, but I've had no luck.
I went looking when I first got the Xoom because I wanted to put my book collection in there.
Someone smarter than me will have to figure out how to do that!
The only alternative I've found so far is using Aldiko (ebook reader from the Market). You store the eBooks on the XOOM and import them into the app. I would prefer to use Google Books however.
That's incredibly frustrating. Even iBooks allows you to add your own epub. If Google Book a can't that's a huge setback for me. I read a couple hours a day on my tablet.

*BUMP* Anything new discovered? It sucks that we need another application and can't use the built in for reading ebooks. I love how books lets you turn pages.

The nook app has a very similar page turn animation and I think the app in general looks better on honeycomb than both kindle and google books. Maybe give that one a try!

Nook is only available to US users (and maybe certain other countries, but I'm not sure). People outside of US can't download nook. You have to find a way to sideload it to your Xoom if you are not in the US.
And Nook has problems displaying book covers from my own epubs. So I'm sticking to Kindle but converting to mobi format may be a hassle to some.
How did you manage to successfully import your mobi files to Kindle?
I have tried copying the files to the SD card location which makes them appear in the app but the app crashes when I try to open them. I have also tried opening them with the Kindle app from my file manager. Again, this was unsuccessful.
Thanks for your help in advance!
iReader?

awesomely free!
I know its been awhile since this was last commented honest and maybe Google has updated Play Books since the last comments, regardless im pretty sure that it now doesnt matter where you get your digital content. Play Books will permit you to upload them and read across multiple devices. I have a fairly decent collection and i go back and forth between my Note III & Note VIII. If the book that you want to read isnt on the particular device that your using, Play Books downloads it. I have been unsuccessful in finding the default directory for the appand it was that very question that brought me to this post. :good:

[Q] How to do video chat on this tablet

Please help.
Very new on Android and I'm trying to figure out the basic stuffs. Bought 2 of these tablet so I can do video chat with my wife and kids.
People have posted that Google talk works but I don't know how to set it up. I looked in the market and didn't see any Google talk app in there so I'm assuming that it's web-based. Googled it and didn't find any link that will set it up for me. I setup my browser (Dolphin HD) as either Android or Desktop and still can't find any link that will launch the app. I Also looked on these forums but can't find a set of instructions that work, just some posts that fix the issues.
An Idiot's guide will work for me.
I believe Google Talk was already loaded on mine. The icon is a speech bubble that says "Talk" in it. It works beautifully for video chat.
Check your installed apps, it should already have been installed on the device. It's apps called 'Talk.' It's one of Googles default apps, also one that can't be found on the market.

They may be cross mobile platform (iOS, Android), but not on PC. With google talk you can go tablet to PC. And soon it will be available for gingerbread phones. And hopefully it will get iOS support eventually and work on all platforms. Or, maybe skype will eventually get Android support.
Don't count on getting skype video for android now. They were working on a video chat version, but now Microsoft has just bought them.
Thanks akashhhh, for pointing out the Chat app on the TF. It looks promising. As soon as I can snatch the new TF back from my wife, I'll try it out. I may have to buy another one. She has taken possession of it, and won't let loose.
R.I.P possibility of Skype Video on Android.. Google talk is nice, but no match for skype
Google talk works great for me. TF to desktop all the time.
Fring works but sound is not brilliant

Editing Google Docs - QuickOffice HD

I've asked this question quite a few times. I've gotten made fun of, insulted, whatever.
I finally got the answer. QuickOffice HD is the ONLY android application that will let you freely edit your Google Doc spreadsheets as if you were on a PC.
So to help the rest of the newcomers out there, as there will be more. This is your answer.
Don't bother with the rest, including Polaris Office. They're all pretty and what not... but useless.

I got the Docs app, and it's rather disappointing. The editing is weird, and everything comes up doublespaced. You also cannot delete documents.
I don't have QuickOffice, and can't see spending $20 for the functionality of being able to edit Google Docs. But then, I don't use my Docs account for much other than keeping notes on things (non-work related) that I want to remember... like the filter part number for my fridge, or links to farkles for the bike...
Hopefully El Goog will fix it up, because it's pretty poor right now.

Android app like "side by side"?

I have a need for this app; it's called "side by side" and it's only on iPad.
Here is the verbage from the youtube video:
Side by Side is a multiple-screen reader/browser with offline reading and note taking capabilities. It turns one iPad into 1 to 4 devices working in parallel.
You can browse webpages, download files, read documents, or take notes on each split screen.
It allows you to have multiple apps running side by side on the screen....
Any android app that will do this?
agreed
I would love to have an app like this for android.
I'm really hoping someone has or is in the middle of creating this type of app for honeycomb.

I think we'd all love to know what technology/trickery you are using to make one eye focus on your notes while the other eye focusses on another app. Totally unrelated ofc, but you made me think of THIS video.
Nothing like this exists that I'm aware of... so far. Unless you are using some remote desktop software and accessing a pc/mac. Most ipad apps seem to get ported over so I'm sure we'll see it in the future.

Unfortunately, these guys are only selling their software to OEM's, so the chance of buying it from the market are zero... you'll have to buy a new device with the software built-in. I hope someone will be able to hack and extract the software to run on our tablets - this solution is WAY better than side-by-side as it allows for real apps to be run in each window (not just a simple browser or notepad).

Just FYI the "Side-by-side" app doesn't actually allow you to run multiple apps side-by-side, it only allows you do a limited number of specific tasks (web browsing/note taking) that are baked into the app.
To override an application's screen context would require extensive changes to the Android framework (and similar changes to iOS but no-one but Apple has access to the source for iOS) and would only happen as a full custom build of the OS (Like the "EDEN" system of the Notion Ink Adam)
