Editing Google Docs - QuickOffice HD - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've asked this question quite a few times. I've gotten made fun of, insulted, whatever.
I finally got the answer. QuickOffice HD is the ONLY android application that will let you freely edit your Google Doc spreadsheets as if you were on a PC.
So to help the rest of the newcomers out there, as there will be more. This is your answer.
Don't bother with the rest, including Polaris Office. They're all pretty and what not... but useless.

Thanks for the tip, too bad about your experience when asking around, don't pay mind to **** bags man.

I got the Docs app, and it's rather disappointing. The editing is weird, and everything comes up doublespaced. You also cannot delete documents.
I don't have QuickOffice, and can't see spending $20 for the functionality of being able to edit Google Docs. But then, I don't use my Docs account for much other than keeping notes on things (non-work related) that I want to remember... like the filter part number for my fridge, or links to farkles for the bike...
Hopefully El Goog will fix it up, because it's pretty poor right now.

Which docs app are you talking about? Polaris? I own quickoffice pro, which is for mobile and might not be installable on my tablet.. Cash grab for a new version for tablets probably. Quickoffice pro is pretty good for my phone though.

The native Google Docs app from the Market. It's terrible. Their own app, doesn't work so well with their own spreadsheets.

google reader . Which is the best

I have tried so many google reader apps. But could not find one thats really good
In iphone i have newsrack - Very good one and has nice preview of images with each icon.
Feedsquare is one with similar fns but sync is terrible
Any suggestions.
I like greader. It reminds me of the mobile site, and is very easy to navigate.
Did you tried Newsrob?
I used to use Newsrob, but now I've switched to using the Reader mobile site - it's great. No good for you if you need offline reading of course, but it gets my vote
I think they all SUCK. I don't have a lot in my list, perhaps 12 sources, half of them news, other tech stuff. And syncing in every Greader app I've found takes forever, often either downloading some X number of total articles and skipping ALL the rest (wtf??) or downloading thousands of articles. Hello, X number of new articles?
So I just read in the default browser, it works great, but obviously it's not offline... Don't try it in Opera, it renders horribly.
Using the Greader site, works ok.
But since I'm using Feedly (Firefox extension) on my laptop I'm really looking forward to their Android app that should be released shortly.
NewsRob works for me.

Newsrob does not give a thumbnail in the list view.
This i find very useful.
See the attached image to see what i mean
Shortcut to the mobile page for me.
gReader is the best in my opinion, tried most everything.
I don't like gReader, it's too damn iPhony. This is Android, no clue why the dev follows Apple's GUI guidelines here lol
Anyway, my vote goes to FeedR, slick and fast. Although if I haven't purchased it, then I would just use the mobile site.
Looking forward to an official app from Google.
Yup, another vote for the mobile site here.
The big problem for me with the Android apps is that they only do the feeds and not the shares from friends (e.g. shares from Google Buzz).
have u all try feedR? i think it's the best from all google reader apps i've tried

There is a good ui guidline for Android. There is one also for icons, widgets, and what not. Check out the Android Dev site. It doesn't have to be very detailed and covers everything, but it sure preserves the Android style and atmosphere which is NOTHING like gReader.

[Q] Google doc app in Market

Can Somebody try the app out on the transformer? And is it optimized for honeycomb?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
Ive read in reviews there is alread an app on the tablet pre installed that is compatible with google docs
It is not optimised for tablets, essentially it's just the website in a browser window.

Thanks for the notice on this new application. From the comments on the market it doesn't look like it is optimized for tablets, but I'm interested to hear from current Transformer owners on how it functions.

"If you supply your Google login credentials you can edit/save documents stored in the cloud."
Excellent.
I wouldn't say excellent. Google Docs is much more than storage. I hope Google will fix the Android browser to be able to work with Google Docs without any apps. Dual booting Google Chrome OS would be great too.

It is indeed just opening the docs up in a browser. At first I had a login issue because it hadn't passed authentication yet and I briefly saw the Google Docs mobile login site on it. It has the exact same functionality as if you had opened the Doc up in the browser. It's just a pretty interface to the Google Docs site
Just tried it on my eee pad. It works fine but as stated before it's not optimised layout-wise for honeycomb. Does what its meant to do though.
With the Google Docs app, you can take pictures of text and have it converted to an editable document. My question if anyone has tried it yet is this.......If you take a picture with text AND a picture, does it import the pic also?
I get my Transformer in the a.m. tomorrow, and if no one can answer this, I will try it when I get a chance and follow-up, in case anyone else is interested.

Most of these guys are kind of slow. There is an actual app that is not via the browser. I'm not sure if its optimized for HC but my guess is yes, why wouldn't they make it for all platforms. I used it today on my EVO so I'm positive it works on HC.
Yea it's a application in the market. I hope that's what people are responding about. Also the app works well on my g2 for whatever that's worth.

Could not find a way to edit existing docs - no edit button, while newly created and saved document can be edited. Also was able to edit spreadsheet loaded before

I think the confusion is that the front end of the Google docs app where you browse your docs is NOT from the web, it's an actual UI from the app itself. However, once you start viewing a doc or editing it, you are then basically thrown back into the mobile Google Docs webpage, which has very limited functionality.
What I'm saying is, don't expect it to replace a dedicated Office suite anytime soon...
I think on tablets Google Docs should work without problems in browser. That it does not right now shows that the browsers are very limited and similar web apps won't work neither.

Polaris Office app

I feel I should tell people who do a lot of word, ppt, excel that the Polaris Office app that comes preinstalled on TF is much SUPERIOR to quickoffice hd pro that supposedly is designed for tablets. The words are mixed up and ppt sides that I use in my word documents don't show up clearly on quickoffice, but they run perfectly fine on Polaris, so don't rush into buying an office suite for your TF, because Polaris gets the job done well.
Thanks for passing that info on. One reason I want a TF over the Acer or Xoom is because it comes with that software.
hi there. have you guys have any idea how to insert an image (eg from my gallery) into an excel spreadsheet in the said app? There dont seem to be any option to do that. I even searched the Polaris website for help, but to no avail.
For everyone interested, I just this morning updated my Office Suite comparison over in the XOOM forum to include Polaris Office (PowerPoint only for now). The link is in my signature. I will update the Word and Excel comparison soon.

That's a big negatory. All the pages are there but calcs between them do not work. Same issue with DTG. I have not tried quickoffice yet so I do not know if this feature works with it.
To confirm I'm talking about gdocs that I pull down, I have not created a spreadsheet from scratch to try the calc across sheets with PO.

Well that sucks...it's a pretty important feature.
I'm using it for work and it does work well. I wish you could create and save to dropbox folders then have them sync properly. Polaris needs to write to the dropbox api or dropbox needs to add support for file moves and creation to android.
I admit that I am not the best speller. Thus I wish there was spell and grammar check.

Does anyone know how to "select" text in the Docs app? As stupid as this sounds, I haven't figured out how to do it yet.

Open the document, go into Edit mode and then double-tap into the text. You'll see something like two pins enclosing selected text. Use the "Ribbon" to copy/cut/paste.
Thanks!

Not sure that's possible with any of the current apps. They are very limited in their functionality; the devs don't seem to expect tablet users to do serious work :-|

Thanks for responding. I edited my document on my desktop as a DOCX with half inch margins, then sent it to my TF, opened it and saved it as a DOC. That did the trick. From now on, that will be my template.

Polaris would be great if I was able to paste text into the app that was copied from other apps. It looks as though this was possible prior to 3.1, but is broken now. That's a pretty big requirement for me.

Polaris Office saving BACK to Google Docs

I can see how I can use Polaris Office 3.0 on my Transformer with Google Docs to open documents, but it then seems to want to save it's copy locally, which is clearly useless (I don't want 2 different copies of the document), I can't see hot to save it back to Google Docs.
Anyone know?
I can't believe it doesn't support it...
I've been trying to work that out as well, but the program is sorely lacking anything in the way of documentation... So I'm stumped, too. Does seem weird that it could open it from Google Docs but not upload it...

While in Polaris with the doc open you need to go to edit mode and edit. Than with out hitting save go into read mode-than hit menu in top right corner and hit send.. send to Google docs.
You must have gdocs app on the tfr.
Hope this helps
This doesn't work for me, it creates duplicate files in Google docs. Polaris Office is really good aside from this single fatal flaw. Anyone know how to talk to Polaris Office support about this problem?

wow that is weird. I dont get duplicate docs in Gdocs. the way i described.
Not sure how to reach polaris support.... Good luck.

[Q] Is there an app like htc notes for the transformer

Hi! Im new to this forum and also to the transformer. I bought it because its a really cool devise and I plan to use it to take notes during classes and so on. It works fine for this, except right now im studying the phonetic alphabet (the swedish one) and polaris office does not have any of the symbols i need. Therefore im in need of an app that can handle bot typing on the keyboard and handwriting with a stylus pen, kinda like the one on HTC Flyer.
Is there an app that can do this? Or is it possible to maybe get the htc notes app for the transformer? it does not have to work flawless, but i want to be able to add handwritten notes to the ones i type.
Thanks!
Not sure about different 'Notes' apps, there are quite a few to choose from on the market but I'd probably recommend 'Thumb Keyboard'. Apart from it being the best thing since slice bread with regards to typing it also has all the different characters and keysets that you'd ever need and is fully customisable.
There is...I can't recall the name but you can write and type on a note. it shrinks your writing to fit on a line too... pretty cool.
Will check when I get home.

Freenote does this, I love it Perfect for class. Also, SwiftKey for Tablets is my keyboard recommendation - it has a split keyboard option for thumb typing as well, plus predictive text.
Swedish, huh? How'd you get into that? My husband's family is from Sweden. (Not to clutter up the thread, just don't hear Sweden come up too often)

You can try to port Myscript Notes Mobile from the Lenovo Ideapad.

It converts your stylus notes in normal typed text.

Hmm. I just noticed that freenotes has no option to export or save files as documents. Since i plan on uing this in my studies i really need this function. Is there a way to do this or do i need to find another app?
maybe my mediocre english got you all confused. What im looking for is an app that can handle, or at least save files as, .doc files that has an option for handwriting aswell as typing with the keyboard. Kinda like polaris office, but with built in handwriting.
Thanks again
Latest update of Evernote came with a fairly decent Skitch integration. Might be worth a look.

I unfortunately just noticed this today as well, actually. I was hoping that maybe I could figure out a way to export Freenotes into .pdf format. Either way, will keep an eye out for what you're looking for and will keep watching this thread. I think this concept for Android is sort of ongoing development, so hopefully it'll take off soon!

I downloadet that application two days ago but unfortunatly its not really what im looking for. Skitch might work for drawing, but not really for writing. I want an app that is more like Word or Polaris office, but with handwriting also.

RepliGo Reader
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.cerience.reader.app&feature=search_result
could possibly try something like hanwang. Its a keyboard replacement that either lets you type, or write, and it auto converts it to typed text.
A few tips, the last version i tried defaulted to Chinese, change it in the settings.
and write in cursive, even if its sloppy as mess its more accurate, amazingly accurate! than regular script writing.
Hanwang!!
Antipaper - Good for handwriting but does no recognition.
I export to Evernote and store my notes there. Evernote does recognition (not conversion) and lets me search my hand written notes.
