Samsung is a manufacturer which is having the most market shares currently. But, their customer aftermarket support is the worst.
As all of us know, the Galaxy line of devices are so successful today for having a sales of up to millions. The reason for this is from the start of the Galaxy S.It is their flagship phone in 2010, with a sales of about 20 million globally. Now, Samsung have made a decision not to upgrade the Galaxy S to the newset Android 4.0. Source: http://www.samsungtomorrow.com/2043
Translated English page by Sammobile : http://www.sammobile.com/2011/12/22/official-no-android-4-0-for-galaxy-s-and-galaxy-tab/
Is it a hardware issue? No, it is because they just don't want to upgrade it and wants people to buy their new phones so they can make more money. And even Sony Ericsson done soooo much better than them. They decided to upgrade their whole 2011 Xperia line of devices, even including the 150$ Xperia Mini.
Yes i know that the Galaxy S is an old device, which already exceeded the 18 months of software update. But well, what happens to its other brother? The Galaxy S Super Clear LCD i9003 which launched about the same time as the Galaxy S2, and the Galaxy S Plus which have not even exceeded 6 months, and the recently Galaxy W,what would happen to them? And also, the Galaxy S have so much similarities to the Nexus S, which had its Ice Cream Sandwich update about 1 week ago.
It is a BIG SHAME that Samsung would make this decision, as these devices are still in the 18 months software update timeline. Is the Google's Android Update Alliance dead? Most of us would probably say yes. If Samsung are not gonna rethink this and release the new update for the Galaxy S phones, I would be sure that this is my first and last Samsung phone ever.Samsung is just caring its sales of new devices and its money. My next phone would be only from Google, the Nexus line.
I'm guessing u have a galaxy s? All companies are like that all they care about is money. Why give it to the old phone when they can Just make a new one and give it to that one and make double or triple the money. Just because their greedy didn't mean its a bad phone. Just saying. The market is just a joke now - the devices are all junk really. Everybody can get one now because they're free on contract, and that has totally killed the value of a "smartphone", even if we can get them cheaper now. For this reason, there's no need to cry over spilled milk. I had an HTC Diamond from 2009 up until this year, when it wasn't worth it to repair because the market screwed itself so badly. I (sadly) carry around a Samsung Epic (the superior of all the Galaxy S series), but it'll never be able to replace the magic of Windows Mobile that our quickly moving market/retarded Microsoft has frowned upon.

Motorola is the worse when it comes to upgrade
and with their locked bootloader you can't even load custom ROMs
HTC is heading the same way as Moto
If you want updates then next time just get a nexus device next time your available for an upgrade or get a crapple iPhone!! ;p

If you are whining about updates why don't you flash a custom rom? Or get a nexus? Oh wait....
Sent from my E10i using XDA App
people who care about receiving the latest update would be on forums like this - by extension you will have dabbled with custom roms.
samsung gave their reason why they couldn't put ICS on the older devices - it involves touchwiz, which is their core skin - samsung aren't going to ditch it for their non nexus devices anytime soon (otherwise every android handset would really be "the same as the next").
load a custom rom with no skins onto your phone and stop complaining, or buy a new device. nobody guaranteed you any updates to the latest firmware - and hell, i wouldn't be surprised if the galaxy s 2 won't receive an update to android letter "J" because the screen resolution is too small or something.
Stop whining and get a new device. I was once a Galaxy S user, and have been through the Eclair, Froyo and Gingerbread era. I am more than satisfied to have this phone supported until Gingerbread. Besides, I can flash the ported ICS rom if I want to.

Spot on! Most of the average consumer don't give a damn about what android version they are using, the manufacturer skin and other stuff about that. As long as the phone is works just nice, then they don't care about the versions they are using. I even saw phones (Xperia X8) still stuck at 2.1 and yet the phone works just fine. Did the phone render unusable for not having 4.0? No right? If those guys (especially techies) still whine about manufacturers not giving updates or some sort why don't they flash a custom rom? Problem Solved.

How in the name of Zeus did you go 4 days with a stock ROM on ANY Samsung device? How the **** did you not void your warranty the second you unboxed your phone??
In ALL of the time you spent putting together this very eloquent and moving post, you could have rooted your phone and flashed a custom ROM.
Just wait for CM8 on EVERY device, don't worry about it, you're getting bent out of shape.
Can old S even handle 4.0 hardware wise? How much ram does 4.0 need to run comfortably?
Also, OP, you've clearly NEVER really been a phone enthusiast, have you? Go look up OMNIA HD, for example. People still used and more or less loved it despite how little support it got even from the community.

BTW Sammy is one of the most dev-friendly manufacturers out there. They tried to make everything open source, having an open bootloader and even gave SGS2s to CM7 developers. They hired Steve Kondik (The guy who worked on the popular CyanogenMod Rom) too. Unlike HTC which locks down bootloaders on their devices and lied about it about the bootloader unlock thingy.

Am I the only one that worries more about 2.3 than 2.2? Samsung is literally the last top of the line phone to get 2.2....ridiculous....Will we see 2.3/3.0? I mean this phone should have came with 2.2 or at latest sept. I really expect samsung to support these phones through July 2011. Does anyone else? What's your expectations?
i don't think there will be official 2.3 android...
Samsung is notorious for not supporting updates. They'd rather sell new hardware than update what's out already for free. You're lucky you're getting a 2.2 update even if it is taking forever to release, 2.3 is going to be a stretch though.
Who cares for official release , no one here is running stock anyhow.
Word on the street is Nexus S is Galaxy S variant and is running Gingerbread, and since Nexus line is googles developer phone , means source of gingerbread will be available .

Motorola is supposed to be bringing a dual core phone to AT&T in feb. That's if you like blur. I'm also not sold on dual core either... I mean hello battery drain and for what positives? The soc in our captivate has yet to be pushed by anything android market can throw at it.
The resale value on this phone is gonna be horrible. I sold my 3GS last month for 300. Think in oct 2011 I can sell this phone for 200? Sucks. If the software support was there, they would wipe the floor with apple.

See that is exactly how Apple keeps winning the war. Software support. It's an easy Eco system to buy into because the hardware is almost always supported for years. Yes closed systems. But the resale value for notebooks, computers, and iPhones is awesome. My wife will easily be able to pay for her next iPhone by selling the iPhone 4, hell we made 100 profit on both our 3GS. I have bought 2 3GS, an iPad, and a MacBook air.
I really love android and I love the hardware samsung puts out. I just wish they could grasp the concept of full customer support. They just come across as shady salesmen that can't wait to push the next big thing.
If I can't sell my captivate for much $$, I certainly won't be buying the next samsung whatever.

The way I see it these companies should make one of the following choices:
1. Sell cellphones with untouched Android. Leave it like wp7 and ios and let google handle software upgrades etc.
2. Have your custom software but support upgrades until hardware is no longer up to par. Maybe make their software downloadable through the market so we just update as needed but can run stock android while waiting.
3. Get out of the cellphone business and just become a hardware manufacture for real cellphone companies that can provide support.
I personally think option 1 is the best.... And most profitable. I mean samsung is stretched pretty thin. They make tvs and washing machines while trying to make cell phones, manufacture chips, and be a software company. Do what you do best and stick with it.
Check out this brief note about the ever elusive Froyo update for our beloved, under performing (OOTB) phone.

I don't really care anymore when the official 2.2 update will come out. I'm happy sticking with custom roms until the Motorola Atrix comes out. Hopefully it will live up to the hype. The Captivate is my first and last Samsung cell phone I'll ever buy.
I too am just waiting for the atrix. I've never bought a phone off contact but will be forced too cause I bought the captivate with my upgrade. Its not that I'm totally unhappy with the captivate, just upset that samsung has don't so little to ensure that their "flagship" phone stays up to date. Its too bad too cause it has such great potential.

Also, my first and last Samsung phone. I'm boycotting them altogether. My next phone Sony or Motorola...CES showed off some good stuff. Next flat screen TV Sony prolly, or maybe an LG; def done with Samsung.

Yeah, that's the killer. The SGS line was supposed to be their Flagship Android line for the US...got tons of people on board only to essentially abandoned us to work on new products to trick people in to buying. They can't get us an update for this line but they can put the OS on new products without any problems. Just look at what the devs on this forum have done with a FW that's not even for our device. If they can do it, then surely the makers of the damn line could. I hope they crash and burn, market share wise. It may take a while but if they continue this BS with other lines and products people are eventually going to say f-off.
My next phone is going to be either Motorola or HTC. In fact, I just replaced my Samsung TV with a LG. I am done with Samsung all together.
Cry some more? Even when they come out with it, it will just be stripped and modded and redistributed on the forums. The custom ones will be better than anything Samsung will put out.

This is the exact same conversation that everyone was having in the motorola forums with the backflip cliq and cliq xt. Htc is the only ones that have a reputation good for upgrading their phones, but moto and samsung have the best hardware (imo). Cant beat the screen on this thing and every moto I own has been indestructable. So now I buy the phone with the best hardware and community support. I have come to love flashing my phone with something different all the time, whether it be roms or themes, so I will never again buy a phone on the day of release. I will always wait untill the devs behind xda have a go at the device. Then at that point I could care less about manufacturer upgrades
Just my two cents... Take it or leave it

Lets face it Samsung makes the best hardware, But everything Support Software Updates Sucks harry monkey ****.
I will never get a samsung android phone.
Samsung has been tweeting the same message since the end of December when they knew they would miss the "End of Year" commitment.
But for all those convinced they are evil, go read the forums and blogs for other phones - all manufacturers miss dates, and many times it is due to carrier involvement. The grass always seems greener elsewhere, but the truth is, the same frustrations exist with all vendors.
Then the choice is clear. Generic non carrier phones.
All you guys high on the Moto Atrix, doesnt Moto lock down the phones so you cant root (easily or at all) ? Every manufacturer has their issues. Im hardly a Samsung fan but Id rather have custom ROM's and Galaxy S seems to allow that without much hassle.
I'm not happy with Samsung by any means, but I also remember waiting for a year for the WinMo update for the HTC Tilt 2 and it came from HTC, not AT$T. It's a tricky balance the relationship these companies have. If a new release borks up a significant number of users it could be a customer service nightmare for both companies with each trying to figure out who gets to fix it. That said, it does seem as though Samsung has moved on and is more focused on selling newer phones than taking care of their existing customer base. That's a bad business decision for any company, especially in an industry where product cycles are so short, customer memories are so long and most marketing is by word of mouth and internet forums.
Can I ask why? I have a captivate, flashed froyo on it and i'm loving it. Is it just Samsung that you don't like or theres something wrong with your phone?

Because they made a promise (online and in writing) to provide the Froyo update. My dislike also comes from having had 2 Samsung HDTVs that, while having great pictures, developed problems that were poorly handled by Samsung service. And while you may be happy with your modded phone, we shouldn't HAVE to flash a non-OEM ROM just to enjoy things like a working GPS or enhancements that other users in other countries are able to enjoy.
Maybe you don't like Samsung, but I love them. Awesome screen, great performance, good battery, and well I don't use GPS so honestly I don't care (I would use Network GPS before real GPS anyway).
I will most likely buy the 4.5" Infuse 4G, unless they make a 4.5" windows phone 7 (which I doubt, WP7 has horrible phones).
Samsung... LG. They wanted to enter the superphone battle but really had no idea of what they were getting themselves into. The time is over where you can just release a phone and not update it expecting it to just continue to sell.
HTC has been dealing with Android for awhile and definitely understands this concept. Many of their phones are receiving Gingerbread while many others have had announcements about updates. HTC stated a phone wasn't going to be updated then a day later had a change of heart. Days later an announcement was made with details of the update.
Communication and promptness is what is going to make or break these companies. Samsung had a big success with the Galaxy S but no one can deny they failed with updating the device once issues arose.
LG definitely wasn't ready to have the "world's first dual-core" smartphone when they didn't even have a competent engineering team to put out good software. And now that same software team is taking forever to get it right.
Were we too naive trusting LG with a phone of this stature?

samsung was ready. I mean look at the sgs2 now. Even with not updating like you said they had mad success. Even those who said never again still want the samsung. It also is the least buggiest device on paper out there looking at the forums.
LG yes. they came in like DEEERRRP, but Samsung knew what they were doing. ****, sgs 4g lmaoooo. They may not be cool how they do it, but they know what there doing and make a good product or people wouldnt be wanting a sgs2 so bad.
Only issue they had was gps, and yes poor updates but thats just them saving money and time and sending it out on a whole new device thats the same as the last with the update. lol
LG did it right with the hardware but screwed up the software. It happens. Google has yet to work with LG, which I think is next in line.
Samsung, HTC, Motorola have all had turns with google and learning the ins and outs.
I think the next Nexus phone will be LG... that will bring them up to speed like the rest.

I've never had a Samsung Android phone before so I can't speak to the past. But the SGS2 has already received three ROM updates and four camera firmware updates in six weeks. 2.3.4 is expected by the end of the month to address an issue with the Android suspend process chewing up battery. It's for non-branded phones though and once the U.S. carriers get involved all bets are off no matter who manufactured the phone.
G2x was rushed out, to get the "first" tag.... It should have went out with 2.3. Saying that LG can not support the phone is way way way too early. IMO they are trying to make 2.3 release be a complete package, as bug free as reasonably necesssary and possible. Tons of updates are equal to one really solid release, some may prefer lots of updates, while most want a solid release, without the need of tick tacking.
LG is essentially relying on pure Android.....if the G2x is not ready for primetime, then Android itself is not.
Incorrect. LG's abomination is not pure Android. It's been proven that they heavily modified the build and just made it LOOK like stock. So again, it falls on the shoulders of LG to get it right.

Who rushed them?
And how did that work out for them?
Please do not put Samsung in the same league as LG. One year ago I would have said, yea sure, go ahead but not now. They just made the worlds most powerful Android device ever made and there getting involved with the DEV community. They have already released 3 updates for the SGSII which is 3 more than LG issued for the G2X. The SGSII has the least amount of bugs out of the new dual core phones being released.
Samsung just joined HTC at the top. LG just replaced Samsung of the Behold II days.
I might be wrong but why did they come out with naked 2.2 froyo?? im guessing cause they wanted to release the phone as soon as possible because if LG could come out with a dual core phone im sure LG knew that other competitors will be coming out with one soon. Also look at them right now they handed out couple of G2X w/ GB to tmobile employees for testing, why couldn't they do that earlier. I guess they figure "hey lets release the phone w/ 2.2 Froyo and figured it would be "safe"". But i guess that was a big mistake.
As far as im concern my phone works perfectly
in my opinion, yeah LG brought out an unstable phone
but then with the developers roms and kernel, my g2x is the fastest and smoothest phone i've ever experienced with.
im not saying that LG was perfect, but its because of them & developers that i have a phone that rapes any other phone on the market

The Atrix is dual-core on Froyo with the same Tegra SoC and hasn't experienced the issues the G2X has so you can't blame Froyo. The Sensation and SGS2 are dual-core on Gingerbread and don't have similar issues either which would mean dual-core phones can work successfully with any newer Android version. So, anecdotally, all fingers point to LG's software and/or hardware decisions.
The whole reason I bought this phone was because it was a very powerful, stock android phone. It had all the right hardware. I knew that because it was in the G series it woiuld recieve crazy dev support and I was sold when I heard cyannogen would be making a rom for it. Its unlocked and flash happy. Honestly I didnt care then and dont care now what the phone was like when it was released. I bought this to tinker and tinkering I am doing lots of. If I wanted a locked down phone with a laggy UI i would have gone with an HTC or motorola phone. At the time i had no clue HTC would unlock the bootloader but has that even happened yet?
If htc was so prepared they would of unlocked the bootloader, which they didn't.

If anything, it would make more sense to think that HTC is incapable of producing solid tech. And quite honestly, it shows. The G1 was a horrid pieces of hardware [note I said HARDWARE, not software] that only stood out because it was the first Android device. The MyTouch was and is slow and clunky even after official upgrades and custom ROMS , where as the Cliq XT [which at one point was WORST PHONE EVAR!~!! according to most android fanboys] is absolutely blazing on its CM7 port considering its a 600mhz processor. And don't get me started about all of HTC's subpar Winmo phones that plagued T-Mobile for a long time [probably why smartphones didn't take off for a while til the iPhone and Blackberry]
On the other hand, LG is more than capable of producing a high end piece of mobile electronic. Considering they have a long history of computer hardware, also applicances and commercial technology. If you think a SoC based Android phone is complicated, please take a look at service manuals for a modern washer or a 3D HDTV. LG has the assembly lines, the manpower, and the R/D to develop a top class mobile device. And the G2X is easily the best designed phone on the market. I'm sorry so many people have had so many issues, but a fully working G2X is miles ahead of anything offered by HTC or Samsung.
Some of you act as if LG has never made mobile phones, yet they've made some of the best and some of the most innovative devices before the smartphone craze took off.

But i can tell you first hand.
this rom is the same rom pretty much as the overseas version which has the lg skin on it. they changed the png files to be stock android and removed the settings additions.
all the hooks and java are in the framework files at least the ones i looked at. have tons of stuff that is not froyo 2.2.2 source.
this explains why both phones have similair problems.
themes cause tons of bootlopps and freezes and reboots if not done correctly. and thats probably the cause of the reboots. since this is a themed rom.
with rommers they put out an update to fix a problem. the companies seem to always try to fix everything before releasing than on top of that they are bringing a whole new os and froyo and GB are quite a bit different. and with tmobile i imagine they told them to get a working gingerbread rom on it and they would buy the phones again.
Hope this helps some.
i think your right

Worked great, the got a lot of press for being the first dual core, which is why they rushed.
The sales have been so strong that they ran out of the phones. Negative press is pretty much on this site and similar, which probably reaches about 5% max of the buyers.
They released with 2.2 which gives most a strong belief that 2.3 will solve a ton of issues whether or not I have experienced them.
The G2x will always be part of the against other phones, as part of the benchmarks, where as the Sensation will drop off.
So did it work, I think so.
Looking forward to 2.3....if it introduces problems I will be very upset.
This is a thread to express your anger at AT&T for not updating phones on a timely basis... They are stalling so they don't have to put their Developers to work and update phones, yet the *PRIZED* possession of AT&T, the Iphone (I$hit) and let apple update them on their own and don't fill them with bloatware.... I absolutely hate that they treat phones like that....

Less yes, but still bugs. All I am saying is creating a thread to vent on a forum that is designed to change how your phone works is pointless. Go back to stock on your phone because the bugs will not be as plentiful.

Usually I wouldn't worry about this thread and move on, but I agree with the OP about the iPhone.
When AT&T got possession of the most powerful phone in the world (SGS II, for those that don't know) there wasn't one single advertisement saying that it was coming out or that they was selling it. When the iPhone had TWO WEEKS to release there was a big *** advertisement on their homepage for preorders. On top of that, when you look at their smartphones the iPhone lineup from the best to the worst that they are selling are all of the first phones listed, where's the SGS II? DEAD LAST!!!

I don't blame AT&T that much, why wouldn't they push a single phone that millions want vs. pushing all of the android phones they have, in the past two months we have seen the galaxy s II, the Atrix II, the SkyRocket and the Vivid released. Before that it as the Atrix, Infuse, and Inspire, all the while Apple has released 1 phone. From a marketing perspective its much cheaper to push 1 phone vs. the 7 I just mentioned and the other 4 smaller releases they have had for android. On top of that they are also selling Windows 7 and blackberry phones. To sum it up its makes sense and is cheaper for them the market the hell out the most popular phone in America then to have to create new campaigns every month for the next flagship phone that gets released for Android. I think that extends to updates as well, I would bet if there were one android manufacturer like Apple for Iphone we would see much quicker updates, its just sort the headache you sign up for when you buy an android phone, if you want quick updates get a google phone, otherwise all you can do is flash.

I've come to expect very little from AT&T. Just a bit more than the bare minimum (i.e. a phone that can call people).
also if you want to express any opinion to At&t, contact At&t. dont expect that they research their old products as well enough to find this message to them.
email, call - i think they have these options if not default to angry letter attached to a box with an old style wind up clock in it.

I was largely under the presumption that, as AT&T customers, we've done this so often that we're sick of it and absolutely can't stand another 3hr+ chat just to get them to send us a replacement phone.

ok then dont call them. make a blog, or yell at the wall, it will do you the same amount of good as posting here.
Stupid question but how is Sprint & Verizon when it comes to updates? I have read they also do the same, MetroPCS are still selling Eclair phones I believe.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
It is pretty much all the us providers that slow down getting the updates. Some manufacturers were sending out pretty frequent updates for their phones but usually it was because they would send out an update like 2.2 which would have some bugs, then a month later they would supposedly fix those bugs with an update that incremented to 2.2.1, 2.2.3 or whatever (I do not remember the exact updates but some of my coworkers with their HTC or Moto phones seemed to get the little incremented updates pretty often, but going from lets say 2.2 to 2.3 took a while.
This is ONE of the advanteges to 1. having a sister device in common like the i9000 and i897 cappy and as well the i9100 and i777. Which WILL allow us on Cappys and ATT OG SGS2's to stay ahead of whatever it is the provider puts out. Like on my cappy I was running froyo maybe 6 months before att decided to put out a official update, then just as att put out the official froyo I was running leaked gingerbread roms which STILL has not been made official from att.
AND 2. being a part of the XDA community so we can get these BETTER THAN STOCK ROM leaks well before.

You'll want to wait for a rooted version of the OTA anyway. It'll be out hours after the source is released. Then you can just use your favorite backup app to get your stuff back.

I'm the same. I've rooted by all the ICS ROM's still have bugs. I'd already have a Galaxy Nexus if they did not delay and delay then have volume bugs! If they released all the drivers from day one, we'd have a million decent custom ROM's...
the nexus s is supposed to be an android flagship phone. Its built with vanilla android so its the first and easiest phone to update, yet for weeks now people are walking around with 4.0 on their galaxy nexus and nexus s users are still left in the dark. say what you will about apple but when an update comes out all compatible devices receive the update that day. obviously im not saying every android should get this update in a timely manner, but a phone by google made for this situation certainly should
I have a question when they said that nexus s should receive ice cream sandwich within " weeks" after galaxy nexus release. Do you guys think the clock has started or are did they mean release in the united states?

Yeah, you may want to recall how us Nexus One users were treated with Gingerbread when the NS came out. ICS was probably developed primarily on the GN, so NS development slips on the totem pole. At least you are getting official ICS...

The Nexus S will get a ICS update LOOONNNGGGG before any other phone will and ICS was built for the Galaxy Nexus so THAT was the first and easiest to develop for. The Nexus S is next.
I don't really care the Nexus S gets the update before other phones, I just want it asap.
I'd gladly have every compatible phone receive ICS tomorrow as long as I got it on my NS.
And, much as I don't like it; the Apple comparisons are true. Apple do release new OS available for everyone to download on the same day their new device featuring that OS is launched.
People say that it would be ridiculous to expect updates until the GN has been out a while, but why? Google should have made the next update available on the day they announced ICS.

Apple also restricts new features to older phones to encourage people to upgrade. Just look at Siri as a fine example, it's *only* available on the 4s even though it's been proven that it will run fine on the 4. Similar constraints can be found with each model upgrade.
When ICS comes out for the nexus S, it will be fully functional with no neutering of any feature. so how does one "encourage" people to upgrade? you delay the update to crank in some early sales.

of course there will be, there already are roms available now for the g1. the original iphone obviously has the same problem the g1 has, hardware limitations. When 4.0 came out the iphone 3gs was laggy and almost unusable until apple released a second update to fix the mess. But were losing sight of the point, when an OS is released by apple all phones (fine all compatible phones) get it that day. Sure it doesnt have all the features as the newest iphones, and by not all the features i mean ONE feature as in siri, but they get the update at least. What have we received since the galaxy nexus was released? And i honestly dont even care enough to keep talking about it, but when ever people hear about apple they always have to but in with "YEA BUT APPLE SUCKS CAUSE ____" which isnt the point, i was making a comparison.
like i said before all because one statement is true, it doesnt make the other statement false.
