Ice cream sandwich update!!! - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I need to update to manually update my nexus S to 4.0.3 with the available update (128MB) file. My main concern is that i dont know which version i have (means whether it's I9020T or I9020A etc.) I bought the unlocked GSM version from Best Buy US on the very day of release during my visit last year and the box had T-mobile SIM in it as well. Currently I'm not in US and my Nexus is running stock 2.3.6 unrooted with baseband: I9020XXKF1 and build no: GRK39F. Now please can someone tell me, can i go on with the update through the process mentioned here:
http://www.androidcentral.com/how-manually-update-your-gsm-nexus-s-ice-cream-sandwich
And will it give me that "recovery backlight" or "no service" or any like bug, experienced by many of the users????

The version should be on the back of the battery. Or on the box it came in (on a tag with bar codes if I remember correct).
Then just find the proper OTA for you here on xda and follow the procedure you posted.
Oh and I don't know about others but I never had a major problem. Just a couple of times the android OS kept the phone awake for a long time.

No, i couldnt find it on battery nor box...

Well if it had a T-Mobile sim then chances are it is a I9020T.
KF1 radio is I9020T and I9023

Yeah there was a Tmobile sim in the box and I9023 is for the SLCD models, right? And i'm sure that i have an SAMOLED version. So should i go on with the update??? I am tired of waiting for the updates but i'm reluctant because of those recovery and no radio after the update bugs.

The code is not on the battery. It is on the phone, UNDER the battery. I.e. remove the battery, and check the samsung sticker.

Thanks mat, got it. It's GT-I9020T, so i think it's safe to update it manually... Will try it tonight.
BTW there arent any issue or problems after manually updating it, right???

omg!!! but how can you buy a phone, and expensive too, and don't even know wich one you bought!!!! shame on you!!!

I updated Manually after I revived the OTA update but wouldn't install (my guess is due to Google throwing on the brakes) and have had no issue. If you Download the OTA zip from XDA you will have to re-root as the offical update will lock the phone again.

Interesting I came here on the same mission, to find out if it was safe to update mine.
I removed the battery and it borrowed my Dads glasses to read the label, it definitely says modelno: I9020A
I didn't actually buy mine, it was acquired by purchasing at work for a developer project, but its unlocked, didn't come with a SIM and I've used it with my t-mobile SIM back at home in the US, but I'm currently using it with great results, including USB tethering with a pre-pay O2[UK] SIM.
So which version/model does this make my phone?

[Q] help i dont know if my phone bricked?

I bought a g2x from craigslist. its brand new but i guess that previous owner has done some update or something now it does not show any baseband version. So my Sim card which i changed to 4g version yesterday does not show any network. my old sim card did not show any network either.
this is what i see when i look at About Phone
Model # LG-P999
Android Version 2.2.2
Baseband Version : Unknown
Kernel Version : 2.6.32.9
Build Number : FRG83G
Software Version : LG-P999-V10f
I am coming from a vibrant with using bionix and not new to rooting or flashing rom. I did research a lot. But not sure if this is something that can be fix.
Please help.
thanks a lot in advance
Try the official update ota or via LG, other threads describe the process and that might get you the new baseband.

I tried to run the software update check from the phone. i connected with wifi. but i guess as it does not have a connection with tmobile netowrk its showing connection failed.
I think what heysharon is saying, is to update through lg website with your phone connected to your pc.

Ohhh, Yeah tried that already. But LG updater says device not supported for update. is there a way to flash the baseband ? I have a feeling that the previous owner flashed a o2x rom or something which changed the baseband. and then he ran the recovery to fix it.
Which model do you have? Check under the battery hood if it's Model 990 or 999. Perhaps it's wrong update for the phone.
Sorry I saw now you said it's 999. If there is no baseband you might have to return it to the Tmo...

Was it working when you bought it from the Craigslist seller? Did you try it with a SIM card before you bought it? Just wondering if the problem was there when you bought it or if you might've done something to the phone after you bought it.

Probably didn't flash an O2X rom as that would've changed the partition table and I don't think you can restore the G2X system back to it ... well at least without going to great lengths to fix the partitions.

i guess what happened is i really did not check it throughly. his sim was inside the phone and when he gave me he took it off and did a factory reset. thats what it was. and i was texting him before we met and he was calling me or texting me from his phone. i believed him. and i can see what happned for believing him. great
Try doing the regular nvflash thing root it n flash a rom or stock nanroid maybe that'll bring the baseband back

Thanks.
I just found that the ROM was for T-MOBILE(TMO)
Hold on
Because of minor difference between two models, i9020a will need to go through some changes for it to function properly. I heard that if you manually update i9020a with i9020t ROM, you will either get an error or it will kill your reception

Settle down. It's been one day since Google announced that ICS is rolling out. They said it will be happening over the next month.
Patience.
Just flash the Neapolitan rom and be happy besides with that rom you don't loose cwm and still have root.

Why the i9020a is the last one.(except ns4g)
Maybe because it was the last one to come out...or maybe it is a way to keep from overloading the server. Only other thing I can think is that maybe they are working on a new radio for the att version

Probably a mixture of all these. I have an i9020a and I'm running the neopolitan ROM for now. It's great. I was on stock 2.3.6 with cwm recovery. Just wiped all and flashed it. It kept the bootloader and the radio.

The update should come sometime this month. Since thats when google said thats when i9020a will get the ota update. It also depends on where you are.

who needs the ota now when there is so many good roms out there? I think the only advantage to the ota coming out is possibly a new radio that might be better.

It may be this month but Google never said it would be this month. They have never stated when/if the i9020a version is getting ICS. There's a difference between a French website posting false information and Google actually making an announcement. JBQ (from Google) has recently said 4.0.4 is not even finished yet. So I highly doubt 4.0.5 will be released this month before 4.0.4 is finished.

When could our 9020A get the same ICS update?

Is Google working on it or they never ever had planned to do it for 9020A?
btw since the update for 9020T is out, I assume what google need to do is simply replacing radio in the ROM according to 9020A specification.
Is it all that hard?
I think they need to fix the battery bugs first.

This. They've put the brakes on the i9020t update already; one suspects they aren't about to start rolling out an update to the i9020a until they're confident it works right.

I flashed the ICS 4.0.3 for 9020T (with radio replaced by KF1), what I observed is the battery lasts longer that it did back in 2.3.6 ages.

Nexus S i9020a (AT&T) and Jelly Bean Crashing

So I have upgraded my Nexus S i9020a (AT&T) with ROM from the google dev site....
(I cannot post links yet)
developers.google.com -> android/nexus/images
I installed the JRO03E base OS from the T-Mobile / Global version (sojujro03e)
and just the radio from (sojuajro03e)
For the most part things are working fine but it does seem to crash on me while on calls a couple times a day (which is like and 1/4 of the time) so far.
I guessing this crashing is due to my mixing of roms but I figured I would ask if
1) Has anyone else tried this and what is their experience?
2) Is anyone seeing crashing with the sojuajro03e or sojujro03e as is?

Thanks for the info yes I can go back to that to a the pure AT&T rom. I am just saying there may or may not be some benefits to having a rom that does not call back to AT&T so they can double charge you for the same data you already pay them for.
4.1.1 performance on I9020a?

Lollipop Rolls Out to M8

Great to hear, looking forward to the new radios
update for GSM
hey!Im currently using this phone on a gsm carrier. .anyway i can update the phone directly by putting it in CDMA mode or something?Or do i need to wait for a RUU to flash? Thanks!
Has anyone been able to get the ota update from verizon ?
I went back to completely stock 4.4.4 rom with no system roms removed, stock 4.4.4 recovery and I flashed back to 4.4.4 firmware and the verizon ota updates keeps coming up that I have the latest software.
I know its out because verizon itself even shows it on the net going over the update in detail. They even show you can also get the update through the htc sync software by plugging your m8 in to yuour computer usb port and downloading the update. Which the htc sync software keeps showing no update either.
It would show a repair software option though which I tried that knowing I would still have s-off even if they did relock my bootloader because I could change my cid and use htc dev to unlock that if I needed to.
Anyone have any luck going back to stock and taking the LP ota from verizon ?

The Lollipop update to the AT&T version of the M8 has VoLTE, indicating it's probably a carrier thing more than an HTC thing.

Does anyone know if FoxFi will still work after the Lollipop Update?

Probably. HTC's update page still says that it's in the "3 - Certification stage of the Android Lollipop Release."
Although Mo Versi did say to expect it the first week of March. So must be close.
I just ordered an m8 from Verizon and I really hope it didn't come with lollipop.

Mo Versi replied this morning: "It's approved, you should receive the OTA soon. Thanks!"
Pretty sure one site saw that the lollipop documentation was up and just assumed the ota was released and then all the other sites just copy and pasted it and now its a runaway train. And it being approved is not the same as the update being pushed out. Pretty sure we got played as far as getting it today.
