ICS Whats all the hype? - HTC Sensation

With there being so many nice looking roms out there, whats the hype. I have read about all the features and flash but appearance it is just plain ugly... Which comes back to my question, why deal with a ugly UI for a beta bugged bunch of new features.

ICS and the 3.0 Linux kernel will actual make the S3 SoC function properly, would you not like for your Sensation's async abilities to function as they were meant?

I don't really see how the UI is ugly. I'm using InsertCoin ICS and it seems the same except for the bottom dock in the home screen. Still has sense 3.5 but adds the features of ICS.
Sensational! Tapatalk

funny
I honestly think that all these sense roms look horrible in comparison. i think any rom I have used looks worse i am in love with the ui.

Stock ICS does look better than the one that currently leaked out!
Also..what is S3 SOC async? can you guys explain that one?

Why would you say the appearance of ICS is ugly if you're judging it based off of ROMs that have Sense? What you really mean is that you don't like the appearance of Sense, not ICS.
All the hype behind ICS is that it will hopefully allow the Sensation to make proper use of the processor for the first time. Not a single ROM, dual-core forced or with any other sort of weird bandage fix, makes PROPER use of the Sensation's dual-core. The hope is that ICS has better multi-core support than GB does and that therefore the Sensation will run better and more properly on ICS.

But will it REALLY release the power of our Snapdragon cores? I really hope it does but I worry that Googley Bear chose OMAP for the Nexus for a reason. Will there really be the necessary code in place to support all the current multi-core SoCs, or will it be added as needed for new chips going forward? Hope I'm wrong : ) It seemed to me at the press release for ICS that Google spent more time talking about the font than multi-core support.....

AOSP ICS...fantastic! Minimal interface, no old fashioned gloss, and awesome new stock apps (Gmail and Messaging in particular!)

Nexus Prime w/ ICS Video

Just thought I shared
I never thought I'd say this about a Samsung device, but I honestly can't wait for this phone. I'd like to think that with Google holding the reigns, the Nexus Prime will not have any of the issues that plagued the Vibrant.
Have to say stock ICS looks absolute pony. Horrid colours, crap looking launcher. Google made a BIG mistake going with Samsung for their flagship phones IMO
Coupled with the fact their putting the launch back makes it a loss in my book
Au contraire, i kinda like that user interface. It's purely the new google style and i hope that we can also have it on our sensation. My whishes are for the CM8, but i also hope the Cyanogen Team will improve the camera in their next release... The actual one is almost crap

Probably the Sense UI is the most good looking among others but i like also the stock android style, it's minimalist and with some fancy touches here and there.. Pretty practical if i can say, where sense sometimes is too exhagerated.. Both the worlds have pro's and cons..
NB: i was talking only about the ui... all the sense apps and integrations are basically perfect. I could not live without HTC camera app and friend stream on my sensation
Google UI is suck !!
We should wait Sense 4.0

I think stock Gingerbread is pretty nice. But they did hire that guy who designed webOS' GUI (it's gorgeous) but I haven't really seen that type of creativity transfer over to Android yet.
Like GingerBread and Icecream sounds yummy!

From what I have read it won't be a huge difference on honeycomb, so my guess is it won't be worth it.

Well, what you say is largely true, however ICS open source will allow much more development to occur and there seem to be some nice improvements even to stock, so I'm hopeful that within a few months my Xoom will be even better.
Face unlock? A pretty awesome data manager, the new people app, all core apps updated and they look pretty neat on the SDK as widgets. The new swipe to close in recent apps, and notification bar. The camera update won't be too useful for most but needed anyways. The settings menu looks revamped on tablets. Native screen shot. Larger contact pictures throughout. And we've been able to resize widgets on stock launcher for awhile, but its new on phones.
How is this not better? Yeah I'm sure tiamat will make it better once they get their hands on it but to say it won't be worth flashing is crazy imo.
What about hardware acceleration? Doesn't ICS finally usher this in and shouldn't that help with some of the lag associated with HC? To me, that is more than worth it.
Ill probably buy one lf the first ics tabs and am waiting for the nexus then will buy the sg3 if rumered specs are followed up.. The best part is unification.. I hope there is still good difference in tab and phone experience because i like different devices and enjoy the experience of each, the underlying compatibility will be awesome aspect along with better dual core support tegra 3 cant wait!!

HC added 2d hardware acceleration to go with 3d which was added in Gingerbread. Mine doesn't lag outside of the browser. I would say any problems with the Xoom is from the crappy Tegra2.

Thanks for posting. Seems to be all over the place now, including PocketNow, Engadget etc etc.
I really hope the phone in question is running an S3 SoC like our Sensation because it looks DOG slow. I know poeple will say it's only a test build, but even so, if that's what the S4 (Krait) has to offer I'm deeply disappointed. And qHD resolution? Really? Eeeek. Why no 720p? Chip not up to it?
Apart from bluetooth 4.0, more RAM and a better camera sensor I don't see too much of an improvement in terms of hardware. Still got a big bezel. Not sure HTC are doing the right thing here - the hardware is enough of an improvement to make people who have just got a Sensation on a two year contract feel a bit frustrated, but not significant enough to make those people who are a year into a contract trade up. Hope this isn't their flagship for the MWC in Feb ; ) If this IS an S3 chip then I guess Krait must have been delayed and this is just fodder to buy HTC time. It'll be interesting to see full details at the MWC : )
Is it me or does showing off the phone's IMEI number etc seem a bit foolhardy of whoever filmed that video? Surely HTC will be able to work out who had that prototype recently and kick their butt?? Unless HTC leaked it themselves I suppose...but why would you show such laggy software?

Well, including the "working" sounds in the backgrounds. It looks like this is just recorded somewhere in a HTC office. And without him acting nervously or something might this be done on purpose? And indeed the software seems to be unfinished.
Edit: Nevermind, I just saw the software info screen in the video. If really this will be Sense 4.0 (which I doubt), I won't buy HTCs for a couple of months/years.
menu animations look laggy guessing they will improve
overall HTC ville looks kinda sensation-ish and yeah spec wise it isnt that much of an upgrade
sense 4.0 looks laggy as hell but thats how the first leaked version of ICS sense 3.5 used to be as well so i think we got nothing to worry about
cept AOSP looks hotter lol
It runs at Android 4.0.1 as you can see. Remember our Sense 3.5 builds with ICS 4.0.1? Very laggy.. like this one.
I guess we should wait for the final version and then judge.
Btw, I find it a pretty sexy device.. Thin, nice specs (although it could be better ofcourse..) and Sense
I only hope that HTC will optimize their software for the SoC's so it'll run utterly smooth.

Agreed : ) Looks like some of the imitation 'sense clock' widget skins in the Market ; )
Some sites are stating that the Ville has the Krait chip in it. If that's true it's supposed to be up to 60% faster....in which case either the firmware on that device in the video is truly awful or Krait might be a let down. Really hope it has the same chip as the sensation.
Kinda weird about the screen resolution. Does that mean the Rezound went too far for the current performance of Qualcomm's SoC so HTC had to back it down a bit?
By the way, the reason I care about the lag, even in an early test build, is that I was one of those people who got bitten in the race to offer VGA screens a few years ago. At the time the hardware in my Touch Pro just wasn't good enough to push that many pixels around (vs QVGA) so I was stuck with a fairly sluggish device for a looooong time (although to his credit NRGz worked miracles with his ROMs for it : ). I can't help thinking manufacturers are in the process of doing the same to us again at the moment with the transition from WVGA to qHD and HD screens. Compared to my HD2 my Sensation is clearly faster most of the time, but in certain cirsumstances the gap feels pretty slender.
I'd love it if performance over MHL to a tv was better - it really will be great when we can truly use our smartphones as mini pcs connected to a tv/monitor at 720p+, with a bluetooth media keyboard controlling things and a Micro SDXC card with enourmous amounts of storage.

Let just use one thread

It's too bad...

It's too bad that by the time a real (fully working) AOSP ROM drops for this phone I will already be on my next device. I purchased my original Sensation (now on my 4th or 5th due to dust issues...) back in June of last year. CM7 was always half baked, and although it was my daily it was never really 100% complete. Not to mention they never released an official CM7 for the Sensation.. But anyway, now CM9 is "in progress" but my biggest fear is that it will be 4 to 6 months (at LEAST) before a fully stable, working, reliable AOSP ROM (CM9 or otherwise) is released for our device. The most unfortunate part is that the hardware as a whole is certainly capable, and the devs are certainly good, but it will most likely be a case of "too little too late" for me. I have my eye on a true STOCK device such as the Nexus line, as that will really be the only way to go in the future. The main reasons are as follows, let me know if others agree
1) Almost instant (not really, but you get my point!) updates from Google
2) Those same updates can immediately be applied by Dev's for even more fun!
3) NO SENSE
4) NO SENSE to remove
5) Did I mention those phones don't have Sense???
I am with you. Though Virtuous has relatively decent ICS ROM that I am using, almost no trace of Sense.
Actually considering Galaxy Nexus now, on dailysteaps for $530 today.
Not sure wife will approve since she is still on Vibrant.

Its a good question, and the reason was I simply did not know how awful Sense was. This was my second Android phone, and my first was a bone stock (and loving it!) G2 made as Google intended it to be. I honestly had no concept of the horrifying abomination that Sense is. It was beyond my comprehension that HTC would bother to not only create that beast (sense), but to make it so hard to remove. I loved the hardware build of my first HTC phone and I just assumed Sense would be minor cosmetic changes, clearly I was VERY wrong and should have done much more work before selecting a new device. Also, at the time I purchased the Sensation the hardware was top notch, and it was the most powerful device you could find. Immediately upon powering it on and seeing Sense however, I realized the gravity of my mistake.....
Hmm well. i dont the blame the guy cause.......
This is my first HTC. on the galaxy s side sense use to look like the best android rom ever! we only ever dreamt to get sense 2.1 on our device.
Now that i got sensation with sense 3.0 it was a disaster.
The ui was good but toooooooooooooooooo memory hogging and then all of a sudden i realise samsung majorly improve touchwiz and it looks amazing, the day i slapped myself and what makes it worse is the fact the amount of support the galaxy s 2 is getting compared to our phone
Now my next phone is galaxy s 3 definitely.
however now everything is starting to look so much better tbh because and solely because of trip and only 10% virtuous team and shinzon.
he has had massive breakthroughs with our phone recently. he just released 95% stable fully working sense 4 rom which i think is much more optimised than sense 3.0

My Vibrant started hardware malfunction on data radio in June and at that time HTC Sensation seemed to be a high end choice, just came out with dual core, good camera, etc. I had G1 prior to Vibrant which was made by HTC ( as did my wife and teen) and they were well built and had a good hardware. Little did I know of all the keylogger and other goodies baked into Sensation, should have taken Nexus S instead in a hindsight.
The phone is not too bad with Virtuous ICS ROM now, but in future I will go for Nexus devices, no matter if CPU/GPU not the latest or greatest. Still conidering that Galaxy Nexus dailysteals deal for $530 running today.

Bleh they kept the 3-dot menu. At least change it aesthetically, move it somewhere else or something. I know the option will probably be there to use the menu key. People complained and we got that ICS update. You'd think that'd be a flag for them to change it.

That's how I feel too but still too early to rule it out. Also why was this moved to Q&A? it don't make sense here.
That's UGLY to be totally honest... I'll stick to using 4.5 thanks. Lol. In fact... Sense 5 might be the first version to actually put me off Sense. :'(

Bleh they kept the 3-dot menu. At least change it aesthetically, move it somewhere else or something. I know the option will probably be there to use the menu key. People complained and we got that ICS update. You'd think that'd be a flag for them to change it.

We already got a leaked photo of HTC M7. Sliver edge(like SE Arc) and on-screen keys.

You referring to the photo in that mockup? That's looks like the Mega Boss theme. I doubt that's Sense 5 http://youtu.be/BUwpoDmvUe8
I was talking about he keyboard photo in the OP. That annoying 3-dot menu is right there at the bottom. Assuming it's for all apps as well.
The lockscreen looks quite hideous. However the Settings page and dialer looks much cleaner and less glossy.

Anyway, I think I will just skip HTC M7(still S4) and wait for the next real generation. Maybe I will stick with One S until Q2-end or Q3.
Qualcomm just said to out S5 600/800 this year and Nvidia T4 is coming soon too. They support 4k [email protected] or 2k [email protected] and HDR burst mode.

to me it seems Android is a badly optimized OS, it needs quadcores, 2Ghz, 90 GPU cores in order to run smoothly...
WP8 (Lumia 800) did it better with a singlecore CPU.
iphone does it better with an 800MHz CPU (and did it better than the rest from the beginnings of iphone)
so wtf?
Its because Android runs on so many different devices - iOS runs on 5-6 or whatever it is.
Its a hell a lot easier to optimize a program/OS for a small set of devices, than a large set.
If android-devices were stuck with a set spec, it would be much more optimized. But since there arent any such restrictions, manufactures are free to put whatever hardware they want in them.
Software developing takes a lot longer than hardware development.
