I've been searching all over and I cant find a definitive answer on this.
I have a Toshiba portable USB hard drive that gets its power from the USB connector (it does not have a separate power supply).
Can I hook this up to my Xoom and watch movies/tv shows from it? Does the Xoom support USB hard drives or thumb drives at all?
Sorry in advance if this has already been answered.
Thanks
Yes but you need a USB OTG cable. Not sure if the Xoom will power an external hard drive that runs off of USB only though, you might need to get one if those cables that splits off for power.
I can't get anything to work, even with a USB OTG cable, and I have 3.2 installed.
When I bought the cable it said this ...
This adapter allows you to plug a USB memory stick pen drive so you can play music, videos, backup & transfer files and view photos.

The Motorola forum says it can't be done, yet.
Others say you need to root the phone.
I'm sure you need to unlock and install tiamat rom I think?
I'm new to these forums as of today,
But i've read around the forums, and it seems to me that 3.2 doesn't support USBhost, and therefore PENdrives/USBHDD's cannot be used.
As Kippui stated, you will need to use a custom ROM with USBhost support, before you will be able to use the HDD at the very least

If it has no separate power supply then no, the xoom doesn't put out enough power

Not true about the newer Passports, for example. I have a 1st generation 250GB Passport that can only work if I use a powered hub, but my brand new USB3 650GB Passport works fine and is fully powered by the Xoom.
Please note, I am unlocked, rooted, and running a custom Rom/kernel that supports USB Host Mode.
Stock Honeycomb does not support USBOTG/host mode.
xoom 2 support usb otg with stock firmware
I would go on eBay and buy an Angled USB OTG cable. I got two of them on their for around $7-$8. It's better because you don't have a wire sticking out of your tablet.
I'm paranoid on breaking my ports.

I bought an OTG cable, but it doesn't seem to work, as no device (no drive, mouse, keyboard,... gets powered.) My Xoom is rooted to 3.1 with the 1.4.3 Tiamat kernel.
Can someone help me make it work?
Probably the wrong cable.
Its the wrong cable. i have 3 types of supposed OTG cables and the only one that worked for me was the one from nokia N8. the other cables where just adapters.
Help request: host mode
Xoom: US Wifi only
Honeycomb version: 3.1
Kernel: Tiamat 1.4.3 (formerly 1.4.2)
Busybox: version 1.19.0
I have been trying, without success to connect my USB drive, camera, and phone (rooted Incredible running CM7) to my Xoom using a host cable. First unsuccessful trials were with a host cable that I made following a thread in the development section. I subsequently purchased a Motorola camera connection cable, thinking that I had screwed up the fabrication of the host cable, but results are the same. Note that I am plugging the host cable into the Xoom.
If I open a terminal on my Xoom and type: CD /dev/block then enter "ls", I can see SDA, SDA1, SDA2 which I believe are my external devices.
When I plug in my Incredible, it recognizes the USB connection, but from the Xoom end there is nothing.
But if I try to mount any of these devices with this command: "busybox mount /dev/block/sda1 /mnt/usbOTG" I get this error : "mounting dev/block/sda1 on /mnt/usbOTG failed: No such file or directory"
Any suggestions regarding what I might be doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.
Erm, I bought a cable that was posted in this thread (the Meritline one), and seeing as it was suggested here at xda, I thought it would be trustworthy, apparently not.
Edit: crap, it doesn't have OTG, just like you guys said. What a waste of my money! Any of you guys know where preferably Europe to buy a WORKING cable? Also, is there anything else I can use this cable for?

Yeah, did the same thing. Pretty irritated with the OP of that thread for putting that up there like he knew what he was talking about. He still hasn't updated the thread so other people who don't scroll down the four pages to my post are probably still wasting their time...
Dude, go into Best Buy and buy an OTG cable for $20 bucks. I did that and I haven't had any issues. I also purchased another one that I'm giving away to an XDA member (already claimed) that should be on it's way.
Remember: Cheap is expensive in the end.

Add a connection between pins 4 and 5 on the micro plug and you have your OTG cable.
so, mine connects and the light on my flash drive turns on, but I don't know where to go to access the files? Help?

So i recieved mini usb to usb cable for xoom and i tryied to connect an OCZ 8gb flash drive but no result my xoom doesn't recognize it the light on the OCZ didn't light up.

There seem to be many problems with so-called OTG-cables on ebay... No one knows if they really are OTG-cables or just plain MicroUSB-to-USB-Adaptors...
I bought the original Moto Camera-Cable here

Look at the picture, you need to connect 4 and 5 contacts in the micro-usb connector,
you tablet have usb-host support, tiamat mounts usb-otg automaticaly, no need any program, or modification of tablet.
Your problem in usb-host cable from ebay, you can remake it, or buy a new original cable.
Yesterday I made a custom usb Y cable and connected it to a USB OTG adapter to our phone and supplied a external +5v power then connected USB keyboard and mouse both worked.
But when i tried connecting my pen drive it did not shown any sign of life.
I searched and narrowed these methods:
http://www.chinadigitalcomm.com/how-to-mount-usb-flash-drives-t1865.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1334444
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=997187
According to these two methods I should get sda1 and sda 2 in dev/block after connecting a USB pen drive but that is not happening.
Then I searched and found out that our kernel should have UMS enabled to mount any usb storage device as stated here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22597744&postcount=3
I am really confused now, I know I have enabled USB Host mode as usb mouse and keyboard are working but dont know how to modify our kernel to get usb pen drive work.

you won't be able to modify our kernel with our locked bootloader, but your problem could be elsewhere. the drive requires more power than a mouse or keyboard, so it just may not be getting enough. will your power supply give a full 500mA that is what a normal usb port gives, and is probably overkill for a flash drive, but it would prove whether that is the problem or not.
Does the drive have a light on it that usually turns on when you plug it in? if so, does it come on when you plug it in with your splitter into the phone.
It may be that it is just not supported on our phone, but I think a power problem is much more likely.
EDIT: once you think it is getting power, check for it in /dev/block by running this in terminal emulator. you can check before and after to see what changes, if anything in case it is not named /sdxx
Code:
ls /dev/block

That is right, our phone does not provide power on the usb connection, it is a one way charge only, no matter which cable you use, it is an issue with moto's implementation of the USB protocol.
---EDIT---
I do think that I read that someone was able to get it working by using a powered usb hub attached in between the A2 and the usb device. WARNING some assembly/dis-assembly was required!

devices do work as long as you provide external power, which is what he has done. basically you cut the power wires out of the cable and hook them up to a power supply, thus givng the power and giving the data to the phone. Since it supports host mode, it SHOULD work with a flash drive as well as mice, I have heard of people doing it.

I know this does not explain it, but it is mentioned that a powered hub is needed.... This person was thinking of making basically a DIY HD doc, and there was someone else on here that has done it too, but I can't find that post and I can't remember the users name.

Just more information to think about and look into.

Motorola lied and I'm still locked mb865
I've tried every single thing that I can to make Usb flash drive work but its something in our software that is restricting it detect any of my storage devices.
I saw one more thread yesterday it was for XOOM which says kernel has to be modified in order to get usb Drives work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068999
I now understand that with locked bootloader it will not be possible to modify the kernel so i am abandoning this project and hope we find a way to unlock bootloader soon in the future.
You can try by using a self powered hub which provide power to devices, If it works do post the results as I am also looking forward to use USB HOST feature

Ive done this. I have a powerd usb hub, otg cable hooked up and it does not recognize drives or mice. None of it is working. Beginning to think there is not a way to make this work.
It does work when you connect pen drive to lapdock so its not software/firmware/kernel issue.
Easy solution: buy a lapdock or a media dock with usb ports and connect your drive there.

I did finally get this to work.
One caveat, you have to connect the power directly from the cable to the otg cable. Basically power the hub and the otg cable from one line even though they are connected. This is what did the trick for me.
Ill post pictures when i can if its still foggy.

Update and edit. No automounting at all. Have to use an external program to mount. Been trying to debug this for a while but the OS is not seeing the usb device.
Using USB host diagnostics Android api does not detect the device. Although the claims and classes were found. Kernel is in the green here too. Unfortunitely this makes it so that the USB device cannot be used by 3rd party programs. Still working on figuring this out. I saw a post about shorting out the 4 and 5 line of the microusb cable. Going to try that see where it goes.
Hi, looking to upgrade to a better tablet, currently between the Note 10.1 and an Asus TF300.
I really want to get the note but need to be able to use a hard drive for taking my movie collection with me when I'm travelling.
For Asus TF line, this is as easy as hooking up drive via the docks USB port. In my case I have a Seagate GoFlex drive, which is also powered via the same USB connection.
What I'm wondering is if anyone who has a Note 10.1 and a USB adapter has had any success in connecting up a drive and whether or not it works, powers up, mounts, etc?
I know NTFS is not supported by the Note so willing to root and use an NTFS mounting app from Google Play or format to FAT32 if necessary.
I'm going to be getting new tablet mid next week so need to know as soon as I can. Can't find any info on this anywhere, just general comments on thumb drives.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Has anyone been able to try this?
Had a quick play with the Note 10.1 yesterday in Carphone Warehouse, really like it. Spoke to a Samsung rep who was there but she didn't know either.
If not I'd have to get a Seagate Satellite Wireless drive to stream movies to tablet. As that's around £140 - £180 extra (for 500GB) that increases the total price dramatically as I could just use existing portable drive on the TF300 (which is currently having Jelly Bean rolled out in the US, so UK won't be far behind).
Overall I prefer the note but this is really making it difficult to choose.
sadly I've not seen a USBOTG connector for the Note 10.1 yet. I do this on my S3 with no trouble at all, so as soon as I find an OTG cable for the Note I'll test this. Anyone out there know if the adapters for the Tabs are supposed to work? Rumor is that the HDMI connectors do.

I've read in a few different places that the Tab OTG cable still works fine as it's supposed to be the same 30 pin connector. I was going to get one this I saw on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Connection-...VZ70/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1345401137&sr=8-6
Less bulky and shouldn't get in the way when putting tablet on a stand.
Thanks for testing it if/when you get a cable. It's definitely appreciated.
Ordered one (slightly different as I'm in the US), should be here in a day or two. Will report back!
I haven't tried my OTG adapter yet, but I think the original Tab 10.1 adapter should work. You may need a hard drive that is externally powered - the tab may not be able to bus-power a drive.

Yes, same results as an externally-powered hard drive. NTFS might require some sort of hacks.
it doesn't support the small external hard desk, i personally tried the WD my passport 1 TB and another one with 500gb, it doesn't power it up, however i have a usb otg with a power supply input and it did power up my passport but its useless this way, where the T700 asus keyboard dock powers up any external small hard drive why samsung ! the note is not yet a replacement of a laptop unless it supports hard drives

Thought this might be the case
If I get this tablet, looks like I may need to get a powered hub if using tablet near a power supply.
Not ideal though, may have to get a Seagate Satellite 500GB drive which can stream to the tablet via it's own wifi hotspot. Extra cost I'd have liked to avoided (£130+ in the UK).
Thanks for letting me know though, helps my decision making process (a little at least) on which tablet to get.

What I don't like about the seagate satellite type drives is the fact that you can only use them with pictures, music & stuff like that no file transfer.
That does suck, but my main concern is being able to access my media.
Shame about the extra cost tho.
In the mean time think I'll get a powered usb hub for an existing drive, which will have to do as a short term solution as this will be connected to tv via hdmi adapter at some point.

I just tried this to confirm...
It wont power my 500gb WD drive on its own with both the generic otg cable and official samsung usb attachment.
Although my 16gb thumb drive had no issues with either connector.. Just watched some of The Raid Redemption in 720p fine.
Worse case pick up a couple of 64gb thumbs on sale for traveling.
Lol, oddly enough I did just get a 64gb flash drive now also.

Just got my USB OTG adapter. It connects the Samsung connector port to a USB femail port. When I try to plug in a portable hard drive there is a message that "High power USB device connected" but the drive doesn't spin and isn't mounted. Tried an Ethernet adapter and same thing. I have a powered USB hub and I connected to that and though the hard drive spins it isn't recognized/mounted. Tried connecting a USB flash drive and that isn't mounted.
Ideas?

It should work as long as you have an OTG adapter or cable that shorts pins 4 (the ID pin) and 5 (ground) that would then connect to the powered hub. These can be bought pretty cheap or just make one with a spare cable. The phone needs to know it is in USB host mode (shorted ID to ground) and there needs to be external power for the peripheral devices.
I just recently bought this , this, and this. The hub has two usb's: one for the phone, which has the otg cable, and the other for power (which I connected with the extension cable). You can then use your regular usb wall charger. Everything works great (attach any usb device you like) and when you attach a micro HDMI to regular HDMI cable to a TV/Monitor, you got yourself a computer like setup. I haven't tried it, but I think you can even attach external storage to it as well.

Actually, I used it on stock 2.3.6. As far as I know, that's more or less all that the the laptop docks are (with some added signal to know to use webtop when connected).
