I bought an OTG cable, but it doesn't seem to work, as no device (no drive, mouse, keyboard,... gets powered.) My Xoom is rooted to 3.1 with the 1.4.3 Tiamat kernel.
Can someone help me make it work?
Probably the wrong cable.
Its the wrong cable. i have 3 types of supposed OTG cables and the only one that worked for me was the one from nokia N8. the other cables where just adapters.
Help request: host mode
Xoom: US Wifi only
Honeycomb version: 3.1
Kernel: Tiamat 1.4.3 (formerly 1.4.2)
Busybox: version 1.19.0
I have been trying, without success to connect my USB drive, camera, and phone (rooted Incredible running CM7) to my Xoom using a host cable. First unsuccessful trials were with a host cable that I made following a thread in the development section. I subsequently purchased a Motorola camera connection cable, thinking that I had screwed up the fabrication of the host cable, but results are the same. Note that I am plugging the host cable into the Xoom.
If I open a terminal on my Xoom and type: CD /dev/block then enter "ls", I can see SDA, SDA1, SDA2 which I believe are my external devices.
When I plug in my Incredible, it recognizes the USB connection, but from the Xoom end there is nothing.
But if I try to mount any of these devices with this command: "busybox mount /dev/block/sda1 /mnt/usbOTG" I get this error : "mounting dev/block/sda1 on /mnt/usbOTG failed: No such file or directory"
Any suggestions regarding what I might be doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.
Erm, I bought a cable that was posted in this thread (the Meritline one), and seeing as it was suggested here at xda, I thought it would be trustworthy, apparently not.
Edit: crap, it doesn't have OTG, just like you guys said. What a waste of my money! Any of you guys know where preferably Europe to buy a WORKING cable? Also, is there anything else I can use this cable for?

Yeah, did the same thing. Pretty irritated with the OP of that thread for putting that up there like he knew what he was talking about. He still hasn't updated the thread so other people who don't scroll down the four pages to my post are probably still wasting their time...
Dude, go into Best Buy and buy an OTG cable for $20 bucks. I did that and I haven't had any issues. I also purchased another one that I'm giving away to an XDA member (already claimed) that should be on it's way.
Remember: Cheap is expensive in the end.

Add a connection between pins 4 and 5 on the micro plug and you have your OTG cable.
so, mine connects and the light on my flash drive turns on, but I don't know where to go to access the files? Help?

Agreed. Sometimes it pays to stay legit, even if you have to pay extra. No issues at all with the Moto OTG cable here also.

So i recieved mini usb to usb cable for xoom and i tryied to connect an OCZ 8gb flash drive but no result my xoom doesn't recognize it the light on the OCZ didn't light up.
I thought that moray has usb support right? What am i doing wrong? :/
I even installed USB Mass Storage Watcher OTG but the problem is still there...

There seem to be many problems with so-called OTG-cables on ebay... No one knows if they really are OTG-cables or just plain MicroUSB-to-USB-Adaptors...
I bought the original Moto Camera-Cable here

It works like it should, I can connect my USB-Stick, external HD, MP3-Player... You name it.

Did you try one of the free apps on the markeet that can help you mount your drive? Look for USB Watcher OTG and Drive Mount.
The problem just in the cable, I also recently received a similar, and he also did not work. I remake it and now it works fine.

Look at the picture, you need to connect 4 and 5 contacts in the micro-usb connector,
you tablet have usb-host support, tiamat mounts usb-otg automaticaly, no need any program, or modification of tablet.
Your problem in usb-host cable from ebay, you can remake it, or buy a new original cable.
I've been searching all over and I cant find a definitive answer on this.
I have a Toshiba portable USB hard drive that gets its power from the USB connector (it does not have a separate power supply).
Can I hook this up to my Xoom and watch movies/tv shows from it? Does the Xoom support USB hard drives or thumb drives at all?
Sorry in advance if this has already been answered.
Thanks
Yes but you need a USB OTG cable. Not sure if the Xoom will power an external hard drive that runs off of USB only though, you might need to get one if those cables that splits off for power.
I can't get anything to work, even with a USB OTG cable, and I have 3.2 installed.
When I bought the cable it said this ...
This adapter allows you to plug a USB memory stick pen drive so you can play music, videos, backup & transfer files and view photos.

The Motorola forum says it can't be done, yet.
Others say you need to root the phone.
I'm sure you need to unlock and install tiamat rom I think?
I'm new to these forums as of today,
But i've read around the forums, and it seems to me that 3.2 doesn't support USBhost, and therefore PENdrives/USBHDD's cannot be used.
As Kippui stated, you will need to use a custom ROM with USBhost support, before you will be able to use the HDD at the very least

Not true about the newer Passports, for example. I have a 1st generation 250GB Passport that can only work if I use a powered hub, but my brand new USB3 650GB Passport works fine and is fully powered by the Xoom.
Please note, I am unlocked, rooted, and running a custom Rom/kernel that supports USB Host Mode.
Stock Honeycomb does not support USBOTG/host mode.
xoom 2 support usb otg with stock firmware
I would go on eBay and buy an Angled USB OTG cable. I got two of them on their for around $7-$8. It's better because you don't have a wire sticking out of your tablet.
I'm paranoid on breaking my ports.

Well that's something in it's favor, anyway.
Yesterday I made a custom usb Y cable and connected it to a USB OTG adapter to our phone and supplied a external +5v power then connected USB keyboard and mouse both worked.
But when i tried connecting my pen drive it did not shown any sign of life.
I searched and narrowed these methods:
http://www.chinadigitalcomm.com/how-to-mount-usb-flash-drives-t1865.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1334444
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=997187
According to these two methods I should get sda1 and sda 2 in dev/block after connecting a USB pen drive but that is not happening.
Then I searched and found out that our kernel should have UMS enabled to mount any usb storage device as stated here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22597744&postcount=3
I am really confused now, I know I have enabled USB Host mode as usb mouse and keyboard are working but dont know how to modify our kernel to get usb pen drive work.

you won't be able to modify our kernel with our locked bootloader, but your problem could be elsewhere. the drive requires more power than a mouse or keyboard, so it just may not be getting enough. will your power supply give a full 500mA that is what a normal usb port gives, and is probably overkill for a flash drive, but it would prove whether that is the problem or not.
Does the drive have a light on it that usually turns on when you plug it in? if so, does it come on when you plug it in with your splitter into the phone.
It may be that it is just not supported on our phone, but I think a power problem is much more likely.
EDIT: once you think it is getting power, check for it in /dev/block by running this in terminal emulator. you can check before and after to see what changes, if anything in case it is not named /sdxx
Code:
ls /dev/block

That is right, our phone does not provide power on the usb connection, it is a one way charge only, no matter which cable you use, it is an issue with moto's implementation of the USB protocol.
---EDIT---
I do think that I read that someone was able to get it working by using a powered usb hub attached in between the A2 and the usb device. WARNING some assembly/dis-assembly was required!

devices do work as long as you provide external power, which is what he has done. basically you cut the power wires out of the cable and hook them up to a power supply, thus givng the power and giving the data to the phone. Since it supports host mode, it SHOULD work with a flash drive as well as mice, I have heard of people doing it.

I know this does not explain it, but it is mentioned that a powered hub is needed.... This person was thinking of making basically a DIY HD doc, and there was someone else on here that has done it too, but I can't find that post and I can't remember the users name.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1462541
A cheap hub will do the job much better, and I have heard of other users having trouble with the otg cable and usb storage.
Just more information to think about and look into.
Try this

Motorola lied and I'm still locked mb865
I've tried every single thing that I can to make Usb flash drive work but its something in our software that is restricting it detect any of my storage devices.
I saw one more thread yesterday it was for XOOM which says kernel has to be modified in order to get usb Drives work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068999
I now understand that with locked bootloader it will not be possible to modify the kernel so i am abandoning this project and hope we find a way to unlock bootloader soon in the future.
You can try by using a self powered hub which provide power to devices, If it works do post the results as I am also looking forward to use USB HOST feature

Ive done this. I have a powerd usb hub, otg cable hooked up and it does not recognize drives or mice. None of it is working. Beginning to think there is not a way to make this work.
It does work when you connect pen drive to lapdock so its not software/firmware/kernel issue.
Easy solution: buy a lapdock or a media dock with usb ports and connect your drive there.

I did finally get this to work.
One caveat, you have to connect the power directly from the cable to the otg cable. Basically power the hub and the otg cable from one line even though they are connected. This is what did the trick for me.
Ill post pictures when i can if its still foggy.

Update and edit. No automounting at all. Have to use an external program to mount. Been trying to debug this for a while but the OS is not seeing the usb device.
Using USB host diagnostics Android api does not detect the device. Although the claims and classes were found. Kernel is in the green here too. Unfortunitely this makes it so that the USB device cannot be used by 3rd party programs. Still working on figuring this out. I saw a post about shorting out the 4 and 5 line of the microusb cable. Going to try that see where it goes.
Anyone know of any good adaptors similar to the OTG which would allow to connect USB memory sticks via the USB-C port.

Not sure if the actual term for it is OTG as that's what the adaptor was called for Microusb to USB A connection.

Thanks but that's from the U.S. I'm in the uk
I havent used them but some companies are making flash drive with usb c and usb a if all you want it for is a flash drive you can get a flash drive that works without an adapter
Be careful of hard adapters, they (Ha Ha, YOU) will break themselves or your port
Edit, these may not be OTG also. Yet similar OTG 90* adapters have similar drawbacks/ benefits.
There are 2 like this on Amazon.

I am going to get this soon.
This right angle horizontal, is not yet reviewed, but a sister item with right angle (up) is.
Frys usually stocks this style in micro, maybe a C version is there?
I have used one! The one I use works only with USB flash drives that are fat32 format! The brand of mine is belkin and I bought it from best buy!
Very nice to use this for watching movies and not having to use up storage on the device.
Only drawback is that the usb-c port does not allow you to use wired headphones at the same time! So, I had to go wireless Bluetooth headset!

Curious question. Since this is one of the first phones where the add-on option comes into play (mods), couldnt one devise an external ssd drive moto mod? Either that or one of those all-in-one adapter mods where i can plug in older tech? Im always skeptical about destroying the one & only port on the phone anyway.
In case anyone only wants flash storage I purchased the Sandisk Dual ultra and it works great, usb c and a usb a connector.
Also only have to carry one thing as opposed to two. I bought mine with 128gb storage, preformatted to fat32, was simply plug and play.

You should not have to do anything to get OTG going. In particular you should not have to change USB connection type from developer settings manually, that should happen automatically depending on what device you connect.
The only catch is that you need a decent OTG cable, which has all the correct pins in it. Using a microUSB OTG cable + an microUSB to USB-C adapter for example will NOT work (not unless the microUSB adapter has the OTG pins, which is really unlikely).
I'm using this Anker OTG cable and it works perfectly, first try. So far I've tried external storage devices (card reader, stick, even a 2.5" HDD enclosure), keyboard, mouse, and a MIDI keyboard.
If you need an app for accessing USB storage files I can recommend either USB Media Explorer, or the USB OTG plugin for Solid Explorer.
