[Q] Hard Drives Compatible With USB ?

Does anyone know what the requirements/limits are for using a hard disk drive with the dock USB port ?
I am thinking about getting one of these for general purpose external storage, and it would be nice to get one that works with my transformer too.

well there is no usb 3.0 support so those are out unless you get a backwards compatible one. And you also have to check the power consumption i think it hase to be bellow 15volts but im not sure

As far as I know all USB 3.0 drives are backward compatible.

from what i have read most are compatible with highspeed usb 2.0 but allot less are compatible with regular 2.0 hubs

What. There are 4 kinds of USB (not counting on the go, wireless and eventually others) : USB 1.0, USB 1.1, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0
Hi-Speed USB means just USB 2.0, Super Speed is USB 3.0 and the older ones are plain and simply USB.
The theorical top speeds are: 1.5mbps, 12mbps, 480mbps and finally 4000mbps
High speed was briefly and not standardized with USB 1.1 so some device makers had that nonsense on their hubs.
Maybe you misunderstood? Some drives don't like some hubs, but that's a power requirement... If the drive needs x volts and the hub can't offer them because it's already sharing the power with other devices and has no wall plug to get extra power, the drive will just spin up and down without ever starting. 3.5" drives always need their own power adapter, so those always work, 2.5" ones usually draw the power from the USB and as such might be a little hit and miss with hubs, however the Transformer powers them up quite well.
Western Digital makes awesome, reliable, fast and quiet drives, I do have an USB 2.0 My Passport... And several others in various devices

I wouldn't recommend any of those drives. I would instead go with something like THIS HDD, THIS external enclosure and THIS retractable USB 2.0 A-Male to Mini 5-Pin. I have this setup and I also have one with an 120gb SSD. Incidentally, if you go with a SSD there is no motor that has to spin the platters because there's no moving parts so it uses less battery power than the first HDD I showed you. Also I know on the Vantec enclosure it says capable for up to 160gb drives but if you look at the details it says up to 750gb HDD's. I can confirm this because mine is a 750gb HDD.

Got a Buffalostation that works well. If it's the best or not, I wouldn't know.

Thanks everyone. So far It looks like this one is a pretty good choice. It has good reviews and if its confirmed working on the Transformer I might go ahead and grab it.

I just remembered that I had to re-format it to NTFS before the Transformer would recognize it. Just thought I'd let you know.

...but extremely dependable, very effective and lower power consuming than any of those Buffalo drives. I have a Buffalo NAS drive and they're good for that but as for using one for a portable drive I would not. If you're going to use a regular HDD I would at least go with a Seagate or Western Digital drive as they tend to be better drives and are far quieter than any other brand on the market today. Yeah it may be a little more expensive but it's worth it. At least it was for me that is.

This drive arrived in the mail the other day. So far, so good; it was easily recognized by the TF. Not sure how fast it drains power as I haven't used it for too long yet, but it's silent. I also have an old 320GB Western Digital drive in an enclosure from five years ago that my TF sees, too. So, I have backups of backups. And that's not including the (2) 32gb cards I'll have once the second one shows up next week.

why 2 32g micro sd cards? i find the one 32g in the tab and a 128g in the dock work just fine, and i have my 320g external if i need more. i dont think i coud stand switching out sd cards all the time...

Only one of the cards is micro; the other is full-sized. No switching necessary.

TF700 without keyboard and USB device

Hi all,
Looking To Buy Asus Transformer Infinity TF700 without keyboard, i have few questions.
How can i connect usb disk (or usb memory key) on TF700 ?
Using "usb female to usb female adaptor" can work for connecting usb drive on Usb dock cable of TF700 (without dock) ?

There's this asus thing on amazon for some money that converts the bottom proprietary port into a USB port. From there you could (possibly) attach a USB hub or whatever for your needs.

that's right, it's called an usb kit but i'm not sure if it works for the tf700 since it says "ASUS USB Kit for Eee Pad Transformer TF101, TF101G, TF201 & TF300 Tablets"

You can get the USB adapter for like $30 (works on the 700), or you can go to best buy and get the tf201 dock (that works perfectly on the 700) for $99. IMHO, the dock is the way to go...

Currently, I have both the TF201 dock (best buy $99) and an Asus USB kit (amazon $17) and am glad to have both. The USB kit works but seems to easily come loose, which is horrible for hard drives.

I asked earlier on the forum about pluging in my usb external 2tb drive to the tablet 40 pin via a usb adapter but was told that might be a no go due to lack of android drivers. Has anyone attempted it? I'd be curious to see if it could somehow work.

I just plugged a Seagate 2TB external hard drive into the USB adapter and it came up and is working. Movies play, music plays, pictures, etc.

According to you will it be possibile in a future (maybe with an hack) to connect in this female usb port an usb stick modem with sim card?

Go with the dock.

A little more testing and perhaps better wording:
The 2TB hard drive worked via the tablet's 40 pin input (the one on the bottom that you usually charge from) using the USB adapter.
The 2TB hard drive worked via the dock's USB input.
Nothing worked when I plugged the USB adapter into the dock's 40pin input.
I hope this helps. I have other external hard drives I can test. 500GB - 2TB, Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, a few are USB 3.0, most are USB 2.0.

FWIW, like others, I would highly recommend the dock, especially @ $99. I didn't think I needed it, felt it defeated the idea of a tablet, and had the TF Prime for months without it, but when it went up for $99 @ BB I pulled the trigger on it and I have been pretty amazed at how much I like having available. I use it all the time. It adds a lot of value to the TFs. The fact that I could upgrade to the TF700 and keep it was awesome, I'm not sure I would want a tablet that didn't have something similar going forward.

I got the Infinity without the keyboard as well. I actually already had a portable blue tooth keyboard, which is the Freedom Pro Keyboard. You can pick up on the net from $50 to $100. Amazon link
It's not going to have all the integration of the dock or anything. But I can use it on multiple devices since it has both the HID and SSP blue tooth protocols. I've used it both on my Evo 4G and the Infinity and works like a champ. It does use two AAA batteries. But in the months I've had it, I've only changed them once, and I think I left it on for about three or four days before I discovered it one time.
The thing the dock has that you may want, more battery life, USB ports, and SD card slot. In theory, would could type with it in bed or something too, although I've heard you'll want a flatter surface. It's a pretty nice looking dock and all. But I just didn't see what big benefit it would give me compared to what I had, other than battery life.
I did write on the Freedom Pro Keyboard from when I got it (Link to another forum). It gives my opinion and observations.

I tried to connect a Logitech K400 wirelesse keyboard with no success. I bought a female-female usb adapter and plugged it at my ASUS usb docking cable. The RF receiver isn't recognized and the keyboard can't be used.
WTF ASUS is forcing to use expensive accessory, e.g. dock by 150 € or usb adpter by 30€? Today I'll try the K400 at my sister-in-law's Acer A700 tablet. If it works she can have the keyboard.
Does anyone try another 3rd USB adapter acccessory with things like webcam or keyboard?

I have a little HP bluetooth keyboard that pairs to tf700t pretty well .... it messes up sometimes.
Sort of saved me from buying the dock.
Wish I had a bluetooth mouse tho...

I'm not that surprise this isn't working. One, the keyboard is not blue tooth, which you know. Two, you need drivers to work the unifying usb receiver. I would be surprised if Android had the drivers. Didn't you notice when you plugged into your PC, WIndows or OSX downloaded drivers to install?
To your point, no you don't have buy the ASUS keyboard dock for $150EU/US. If don't mind it not matching, from what has been explored in other threads, the Transformer Prime (TF200) dock is the same, and can be found for around $100EU/US. But since you're you were trying to use something else, there are a plenty of other blue tooth keyboards that can be used. You're looking for one with the HID protocol. Although, you can probably use the SPP, but you'll probably need to make sure you get the drivers somewhere.
I suspect you're looking for that wireless to be able to use with it. I only briefly explored it for use with my phone. You'll have to search and research. There may be something. Personally, it wasn't a must have. Since I'm right next to the tablet, I can just touch the screen just as easily. Other than a few games on OnLive, I can think of what it can do better than my finger on the tablet. Plus, I think the cost will be the same after both the keyboard and mouse/touch pad.
I guess the question for you, not so much is ASUS keyboard dock is pricey, but can you do what you plan with something else. And is the cost of whatever you get, worth the benefit derived.

Probably an easy question but, External Hard Disks?

Finally been able to order a TF700 from Amazon in the UK, I'm off travelling around Europe at the end of next week and intend to take the 700 with me, my question is can I take my external 1TB drive with me and use it as storage (for films, music etc)

Should be doable, although much depends on the power consumption of the drive -- I haven't got a portable model on hand to test it for you. A power-hungry model could either drain the battery too fast to be practical, or it may just be plain impossible to power it from the tablet, causing it to just bork out on you.
Obvisouly, a powered model would cope just fine,but that's not very practical when travelling, isn't it? I have read reports of people using external hard drives on the TF700 before, so I guess it shouldn't pose too much of a problem, though.

assuming you have the keyboard dock too, not only for the USB port but for the extra battery capacity too.
but my WD 750gb works just fine!
I'd suggest MXPlayer 'cause the stock apps suck at decoding divx and other random container formats.

Cool thanks, just ordered a Toshiba Stor.e Alu 1TB (ebay special buy) which is bus powered, should both be here on the 2nd so will plug it into the dock to check.
I am heading down to Spain as I have an apartment there then going to see where the mood takes me, I have 3 months off work (well I say off work, taking the Infinity with an RDP program and my iPhone so I can tether the data) that way I can still work from where ever I am!
The infinity + dock seems the perfect device for me, can carry it easily, brilliant battery life and the full qwerty keyboard.

I plugged a 500GB bus powered USB drive into the dock USB port and it works great!

My 2TB Western Digital MyPassport works just fine. I did format it to get rid of the silly software, though. Don't really notice any powerdrain at all.

I've somewhat accomplished this before with a 2-usb hard drive. The main usb port for transferring I plugged into the infinity, and I plugged the port for power into a portable external battery. It was recognized as another SD card on my infinity. It worked flawlessly when transferring 800MB+ files.

Yup. It works. Mine is WD 1TB, connected via USB of the dock.

I've tried plugging in a standard usb drive (8gb thumb drive) in the usb port before but I can't browse to it in the stock file browser,"external storage"just shows as empty. Do you use a special app for that?

I use a Seagate 2.5" external. It transfers fine and is recognized but playing videos using either mxplayer or bsplayer is imperfect. There is a lot of stutter. My imperfect solution is to rotate out video files on my device.

Not only is an external a great solution, and works perfectly with the dock. It also has a really nice transfer rate. I was getting over 20mb/ps transferring from my 128gb flash drive to the micro sd. I have yet to spring for a 128 sdxc for the dock, but it's on my list.

So far I tried:
- External usb 2.0 disks
- Wireless mouse
- Linksys usb to ethernet
- Usb sticks
The dock's usb port seems to accept anything: even ethernet that allows me to even use my Infinity in the basement of my house (only wired connections there)

I'm one of those people that traded in there TF201 for TF700... I know this was asked and answered early on in the TF201 threads, so I guess I just carried over from there and never bothered asking it again.

For those that care I also had success with a USB 3.0 External right away. It comes with a secondary USB to power cable but that has never actually needed to be used. The USB 3.0 is actually an internal from my laptop in a USB 3.0 case (Put a SSD in lappy ). So long story short USB 3.0 devices should also work but at 2.0 speeds.

I did the same thing with my laptop, but shortly there after, I came to realize that I wasn't using it at all in complete favor of my TF201/700.... Now I've got a lappy with a pretty 120 ssd, and not being used. Coincidentally, I have more space than that in my tablet now...

I can test it tomorrow, but I would imagine the storage part of it would work. The issues you would run into is not being able to write to it, not being able to play a regular dvd movie as it would have to be mp4 formatted, and other minor issues that require software support.
We already know gamepads, keyboards, mice, flash drives, sd card readers, and other such work..

[Q] Portable Hard Drive OTG Power Needed?

I was just wondering if i will need extra power if I want to connect my nexus 5 to a portable hard drive via OTG? If there are any that don't need extra power, what are they? I'm in the UK thanks.

A portable hard drive will need external power. Don't know any that don't. The power draw is too high for the device to handle it.

I have a 250GB Western Digital Passport, 1TB Samsung M3 and a 500GB DIY portable HDD I made with an old laptop drive and USB 3.0 enclosure from eBay... and none of them require an external power supply as they're all USB powered.
Also, when I had a Note 2 I could connect these drives to it... so whilst I can't say for sure they will work with the N5, I don't think it should be ruled out.
I'm at work right now and have no idea where my USB OTG cable is, but if I can find it when I get home I'll test them out.

Since the S3, all flagship Samsung have been able to power OTG Mechanical HDD's.
On the N5, many will not power however recently a few people have said they have managed to do so, but whatever. Generally the advice with the N5 is you need a powered USB hub. Some may work without but we dont have a catalogue of what works.

I'd really appreciate that CitizenLee. The Samsung M3 was the portable hard drive I was thinking of buying and I would be great to know first hand.

looking to go completely wireless with a hard drive for the note pro for movies, music, ebooks, etc. i bought a toshiba 500gb porta-harddrive (UNpowered) and a usb2 otg cable... but its not quite working because the drive doesn't pull enough power to run (it just sits there ticking). when i plug the drive into a powered usb hub and the hub into the otg, it works fine; but then i'm still tethered by the hub power cord.
anyone have a completely wireless setup that works and care to share what equipment they're using? i'm thinking a usb3 otg cable might do the trick, but haven't been able to find one locally, and want to be certain before dealing with the shipping hassle.

The additional conductors added in the wider micro USB 3.0 cable are for data, not power. What you could do is get a USB battery...

I have a Seagate GoFlex 1Tb hdd. I formated it exfat and it works fine with a mocro-USB 2.0 otg cable or with a new micro-USB 3.0 org cable. The NotePro has no problem powering it with either cable.

1) can you look at the fcc sticker on the hard drive and tell me what the power draw is? it should say something like 5V+- XXX mA. i'm curious about how many amps it pulls. i think the problem with mine is that it lists 1000mA, which exceeds both usb2 (500mA) and usb3 (900mA) specs.
2) is your tablet rooted? not sure it matters, but i'm reading mixed opinions on the matter in the fora, and it might be a factor.
i've also formatted exfat and that didn't seem to fix it, and it works fine attached to a powered hub, so it looks like its a power issue.

yes, but usb3 allows for more power to be drawn then usb2 according to the specs. turns out not enough for the hard drive either way unfortunately so the battery might be the way to go. would need a 'y' cable though since there is no power input for the hard drive.
now i'm thinking of just getting one of those hard drive/battery/wi-fi hotspot combos that seagate or corsair makes.

1. Power draw is not listed on my HDD. The part number is 9ZF2N5-501 1 TB if that helps. The only connector is theUSB 3 connector, no seperate power input.
2. No, my NotePro is not Rooted.

As long as the battery of the hdd has enough power to maintain its wifi service this is the absolutely no wires solution. Easy to operate but slow in terms of data transfer. Fast enough to watch Hd-video though.

thats exactly what i was planning on using it for. i've never been able to stream anything via wifi to the tablet (netflix is okay, i mean from my local drives), though, as it always buffers and stutters making video playback unwatchable. probably just my home network, but for almost 200$, i'm a little gunshy about this option.

will try this. cables connecting the devices i don't mind... i just don't want to be tied to a wall outlet. especially if there are no walls available. :cyclops: i went with the 16000 easyacc for $50, and the 9pin usb otg y cable for $9; so that setup is much cheaper then the wifi/harddrive/battery device.

final outcome
thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions.
so i ended up getting a power pack, and an otg y-cable to hook up to the hard drive. i actually bought two otg cables, one usb3 9pin and a usb2 5pin. the usb2 had a micro female connector for the power, while the usb3 had a standard male connector.
the usb3 otg didn't work. plugged the power pack in, plugged the harddrive in, plugged it into the tablet.... nothing.
the usb2 otg did work, luckily the power pack had a male-female adapter. tablet recognized the hard drive was present, but said it was blank, and es file explorer popped up a warning that otg only supported fat32 (hard drive was originally exfat). so after reformatting to fat32, everything seems to work well enough.
i don't know why the usb3 cable doesn't work, it may just be a dud but i have nothing else to test it with. all in all, an annoying and frustrating experience getting this to work. i don't see why anyone actually thinks these sorts of tablets are going to become laptop replacements when basic functionality requires so much teeth pulling.
