[Q] HTC Sensation - volume button replacement help? - HTC Sensation

Hi all, just a quick question.
I bought a 2nd hand HTC Sensation from another forum i am part of, it worked fine for a few weeks, then i noticed the volume button on the side had disappeared!!
Searching has told me this is due to excessive 'playing' with the back cover putting it on and off again potentially, but sadly its not part of a replacement back cover, and is part of the phone.
The phone was originally bought from a Telecom NZ store, so should still be under warranty, but i have no reciept. i imagine they could confirm this in their system.
I would just take it into Telecom under a warranty claim, however the phone is in average condition, with a few scratches/scuffs from the previous owner, and i feel they might not cover it, due to 'physical damage' or whatnot.
I dont want to send it away to Telegistics/whoever Telecom use these days to have to pay an $80 inspection fee or whatnot if they tell me it wont be covered. I'm happy to pay for a replacement 'switch/toggle thing' if there are any other ways to go about this ? or do i bite the bullet and head to a Telecom store.
Appreciate your time reading this having no physical volume button is driving me nuts! i even thought about gluing little things to it, so i can use it. have been controlling volume via Sense and software controls.

So you mean its a problem to carry a spare battery and routinely swap batteries due to this issue? Can you share the link for what you saw?

Broken LCD Screen - some info wanted please :(

Hello All,
today I used my phone for a regular phone call, went back to my desk, put it down, a couple of hours later, I hear the sms ringtone, pressed the 'wake up' button on the top, (the screen had gone blank as usual), and.... disaster, I see a long crack on the screen...
I suppose the phone is still under warranty (1.5years), but I do not know if it covers the LCD screen... It's quite insane, it was not in my pocket, it was not dropped, no liquids were spilled on it... Literally, used for a phonecall, put it down and then next time I use it has a crack is on it!!!
Did anyone have any similar experience in the past? Do you think it is covered by warranty? If not, does anyone have any idea what it costs to get it fixed? (I had bought it from devicewire, uk)....
Thanks,
MM
What's the options?!
You need the screen replaced as soon, as (with my experience) the crack will outgrow the whole screen and soon you won't be able to use it.
Take it to the dealer as soon and as small the crack is, and suggest it was a manufacturer stress in the factory assembly that has started a hidden crack that grew up.
If you have the UK model (same as me) (Orbit 2 Xda branded) they are very very hard to find parts as they are mostly made for the HTC branded phone (silver original one).
So if you find a replacement online pls let me know, i need the touchscreen, not lcd but same diff!
P.S your warranty should only be for 12mths, well atleast mine are, and everything is covered usually, so just ask your outlt... if not, find a part online and repair, i would be happy 2 help with guiding through repairs if needed.
good luck, keep us informed.
I had the same problem. The phone was in my jacket´s pocket and when I was putting the jacket on the back of a chair it slightly hit the wall, for which I didn´t even worry. When later I picked up the phone the lcd was cracked. I have had the phone falling to floor without any problem a long time ago, and ironically it broke with a little hit.
I am sending it to fix, but I know I cant avoid paying for the repair.
Hello All,
thanks for your replies. My HTC is now at the HTC Service... I was told that the warranty does not cover the screen, so we will see how much it costs. The person at the HTC support line told me that the screen would cost around £60 and if it was the case that the mainboard has a problem, it will be more. Additionally, running the diagnostics on the first place will cost £15. It kind of makes me wonder what on earth that warranty covers for. I was under the impression that the phone is still under warranty and their attitude in claiming that this is not covered under by warranty shows the same thing.
Their quality of the service is probably average. I only received an email with the ticket number from them when I phoned them for a second time telling them that tehy had not send me any emails yet. I know they received the phone on the 7th of July, since I received an automated email from them, however, I have not heard anything from them since then, and I will need to phone them again. I have also input the ticket number and my email in their web page, but have not received any updates...
I decided to fix the phone, unless they come up with a stupid cost; the phone is lees than 2 years old and has served me well: I have used messenger while in airports and watched many movies while travelling. On a side note, I kind of have mixed feelings about HTC now. On one hand, HTC is very innovative, on the other hand the fact they release new phones so quickly kind of upsets me. I also think that nokia for example puts a lot more research and QC into their phones. The final thing I am not very fond of on this phone is that it's finger-unfriendly (no, I am not buying an iPhone...).
Even so, I have decided to fix it (subject to the repair quote), and keep it a couple of years more...
I will keep you posted about the final price....
I just replaced my Screen myself tonight, I also fixed a few things inside the device which were getting loose, just as the keys. I put some foam in the case where the keys are and now they are nice and tight.
The device is built better now than it was when i purchased it, plus it has a brand new screen now too. Cost: $1.00 Shipping to AU + $8.87 (USD$)
Tools are mine, they costed me $7 and got some free with screen.
HTC Repair... hell nah!
Hello All,
I know this is an old thread, but believe it or not, I only managed to get my phone back yesterday...
The phone as predicted costed around £60 pounds to fix (including postage). UPS then tried to deliver it to the address I gave to them. Unfortunately, it happened I was not there, so they left me a card. Using the number on the card, I arranged the delivery address to be changed. This happened on the 22n of July.
Unfortunately, the phone went missing and then my long adventure started... UPS asked me to phone HTC, HTC's reply was (I quote): 'Why did you change the delivery address, you would not have a problem now'. Their attitude was mostly unhelpful and they insisted that now (I quote again): 'It's now between you and UPS, why should we contact UPS?'
My understanding is that UPS in these cases asks the SENDER to raise a trace request and that they charge the SENDER for this, which is why a lot of merchandisers are unwilling to put a 'trace request' . Finally, after lots of phonecalls, UPS raised a trace request by itself.
It would take lots of pages to describe here the conversations I had with both UPS and HTC, each one blaming each other, until around mid-September where UPS said that they sent a claim to the SENDER, and it is now upon the sender to act.... Needless to say HTC continued arguing they have not received anything...
Finally, someone found that claim and sent me a replacement phone. The replacement seems new, though I guess, it might as well have been a refurbished phone. I also got a stylus with it and a battery cover, but no battery of course, (I had removed all these prior to sending the phone back).
Now here comes the amazing bit:
This time they used CityLink to send the package and HTC had forgotten to put my name on the package; they only put the delivery address. Amazingly, the package ended up in the company I work for, but in a different building near the one that was supposed to be delivered. Someone from my company called me and asked me if I am expecting a package from HTC, and that I can pop down the street to collect it from them....
Anyway, I have my phone now, it's ok... But I would avoid any interaction with HTC UK in the future.... I think I will also avoid HTC altogether in the guture, but that's a different issue altogether
Thanks everyone who posted in this thread (knowing that this would cost a few bucks to fix does not make it any better, but anyway )
just for next time
in my clumsiness i closed a car door on my cell which broke the LCD
after a short search over the net i found the tools needed (small screwdrivers and some plastic screwdrivers) and the LCD.
found the LCD at Ebay and the screwdrivers at dealExtreame
in really cheap all together cost me something like 140 US dollars
the change was quite simple as there are many youtube videos on how to open our cell.
so after like ah hour all was done and good to go.
hope it will help someone
if anyone need the ebay dealer just ping me (not related someone from china )

Anyone return their phone for warranty?

(service is AT&T)
When I bought my phone, I got full warranty on it (been paying $5 for it monthly)
Its all scratched up and now I want to return it for a new phone or a refurbished one. My current phone has been flashed with a new ROM, which was against the warranty policy.
Has anyone returned a phone like this for warranty after flashing back the original software/ROM? Were they able to find out?
Also, would it be easier if I just threw my phone into the lake and just asked them for a replacement? (I'm fully insured)
flash it back to the original rom.
and restore the SPL
and.. you should be all set.. you do need a good reason to have it fixed...
I can't just say that it's been banged up and has scratches? And that I've been paying $5/monthly for this?
Also, what would happen if I said I lost it,and they send me a replacement raphael, and ended up finding my orginal one under my bed. would they be able to find out that I still have my old one?
banged up and scratched is a normal thing. unless there is something broken in some way shape and form, then you can use that warranty. that's like saying the manufacturer have to give you a new car if your car has a scratch from daily use.
dunno what you can do if you say it's lost, but your phone does has an IMEI which is a very unique and if it ever connects, they can technically make an inquiry...and you might get charged for the price of the full phone. (only a possibility, but don't leave it to chance) Live with the scratches and next time, get yourself something like Bodyguardz or invisible armor...

Wear and tear is not something that's covered under the $5 a month insurance plan.
If you tell them you lost it (and that acutally DID happen to me) they'll bill you the $125 dedcutable on your next bill - and they didn't replace the SD card mine came with either (they did send me a SIM card and another wall charger though).
Once you've lost the phone, that flag the unit so it won't work anymore and yes they will find out you still have it if you try to use it by putting yer new SIM chip in it. Plus techically this is considered 'insurance fraud' which is a crime you can get in a LOT of trouble for. There was an article I read about 2 weeks ago that said these companies are now keeping an eye on forums like this one trying to catch people doing such things. I suspect if everyone was honest we'd be paying $1 a month instead of $5...
Anyway - I know you can buy replacement screens pretty cheap - heck of a lot cheaper than the $125 deductable as matter of fact.
I really want to get this thing replaced. What if I accidentally drop this on my driveway and run it over with my car. WIll they still charge me anything extra? This phone has plently scratches on the screen that it becomes annoying to use the touch screen. Also, the face plate over the home, back, call send and end buttons is coming off, and the sliding mechanism has become a bit herky jerky.
So I guess whatever happens, I will have to pay up to get it replaced or fixed, despite their "fully insured" that I'm paying?
you need a probably cause to have it replaced... not just suddenly a car ran over it. trust me.

Like I said - even if they replace the phone it's still going to cost you $125 for the deductable. Just spend 30 bucks and order a new screen and face plate.

Contacted HTC customer support regarding volume button dropped off

my sensation volume button is dropped off while I was trying to adjust volume, and can not put it back.
I contacted HTC (UK) customer support, they told me this problem is classified as out of warranty, because they assume volume button is sealed very well in back cover and only physical damage can cause it drop off.
customer support blame me for this problem and ask me to buy a new back cover for £40.99 plus £6.99 delivery.
Its just completed ruined my htc experience. I like this phone very much, and I can't adjust volume now.
found same story here, and more same problem happened in reply section.

You can still adjust volume in settings or with other apps.
I believe volume button works as shortcut for volume adjustment.
Bt the fone mite look ugly without the rocker on the side

Thats Strange. I had the exact same problem and called HTC UK, the gentleman advised me to return the phone to T-Mobile to exchange the handset or he could send me a replacement cover, but that would take a week to ten days. I asked for a replacement cover and that arrived 2 days later. Maybe you should call back and speak to someone else.
Demand it. Laws are here to protect you in the EU..
Demand you are unhappy and you want a replacement otherwise lawyers will get involved.
The law says if you are unhappy because a product failed to do it's duty or wasn't of good quality (ie. volume buttons detaching) then the company MUST replace it.
Legally in the UK it is down to the shop/retailer not manufacturer to rectify either through repair or replacement, or if they like by refund.
If something goes wrong in the first 6 months it is up to the shop to prove the issue was caused by misuse, not up to you to prove it just fell off.
So contact the retailer and ask them to repair it or replace it. If they say you need to contact HTC direct tell them that under the sale of goods act it is the responsibility of the retailer.

Yes, I thought I am covered under warranty, seem I was wrong.
It's annoying that customer support he is confirmed with one of his colleague, both of them believe volume button is very well sitted in back cover, its only happened when physical damage to it.
They are using too much their own imagination, not look into problem. I did some research on this, many people have this problem.

Sometimes I wish warranties were banned, they can be used by companies to make out that you have no rights.
All a warranty is in the UK, is an agreement from the retailer/manufacturer that they will repair/exchange the item without hassle if they deem it to fall under that agreement.
Outside that agreement you have statutory rights which in the UK are pretty solid.
For instance, most people will think that after a year if something goes wrong with their phone they should pay to repair it, but the law says that you should be able to get a reasonable amount of use out of an item, and I don't know about you, but I'd expect a £400+ to last more than 2 years.
You also have several organisations which are on your side.
If you want free legal advice there is the Citizen's Advice Bureau.
If you get no where with Vodafone, see if your local BBC radio station has a consumer protection show. BBC 3 Counties Radio (Herts, Beds, Bucks) has an excellent show in the mornings for instance.

The unibody design seems add too much cost to repair for HTC, even only for tiny volume switch.
HTC customer support also argue volume button is very secure and only can be removed by physical damage. But for me, mine is dropped off while I was adjusting volume.
BTW, a tiny volume rocker can destroy HTC brand.

You contact Vodafone again and demand they replace the back cover again, simple as that.
I had that happen, too. HTC US gave me no problem, replaced back cover free.

[Q] Replacing / fixing power button

Hi there, first post (actually joined the forum to post this)
So I am having trouble with my Nexus 5, essentially the power button has recessed into the phone causing it to constantly reboot over and over.
Now before anyone asks I did not buy this phone new from google play. It was purchased second hand at the beginning of last year. I have reached out to the guy and he can't find any receipt or documents from when he purchased. (Its way out of warranty anyway now).
So my question is this a problem I can fix myself easily? I could take to local phone repair shop, but don't want to be overcharged for something that could be a easy fix (plus a lot of repair shops are kinda shady). I am considering just selling on eBay as faulty then buying a new one but if I can fix thats obviously the better option (for me and my wallet).
The power button does not rattle like i've read people experience, its pushed too deeply for that. Any suggestions to wipe the device, or launch into recovery mode won't help here.
Any help would be super appreciated as this is a very annoying problem i'm dealing with here.

I had this same problem last week. Well kind of, my button was NOT held down, but the phone though it was, any time i pressed it it would think I was holding it down and eventually reboot until I banged my phone on something.
I bought my N5 on release day from Google Play and google told me "Sorry it is out of its one year warranty, tough luck".
I took it to my local repair shop, they confirmed that the button is soldered to the motherboard and the same button that the recent galaxy phones use. They soldered off the buggy one, soldered on a new one for $40 and less than an hour. The buttons themselves are very tiny, and less than $5, but even with my decent soldering skills and digital soldering station, I wasn't comfortable doing the job myself.

That's annoying. Well, you can try calling LG to see what they would charge to fix it. Or, maybe call some other shops that aren't local and see if theyll let you ship it to them. Aside from that or selling it, I don't know what other options you have. You could try fixing it yourself, it's already busted so it's not like you've got something to lose. I dunno, I wish I could help more but that's all I got. Good luck man.

OnePlus Repair Center Nightmare!

So.. a couple of weeks ago, I dropped my phone and it stopped working completely. The back glass is cracked and at first it was completely dead, I wasn't able to turn it on or anything. Later it eventually booted and it's currently working fine (all hardware things are working fine). I decided to get a back glass replacement anyway just because it will cut my fingers when used without a case.
So, I requested a repair, and today OnePlus "approved it", they sent me an email message from UPS and here the nightmare begins.. I also got an email from the repair center that will be replacing my back glass, the only problem is... that this repair center is possibly the biggest scamming repair center in my country. When You Google their company name, You can find hundreds of bad reviews and threads on various forums where people talk about it how they got scammed or how they send their phones to that repair center with for example battery that was draining very quickly (phone still on warranty) and they got an email from the repair center that the phone suffered water damage and motherboard has to be replaced (even though the owner said that his phone never even got close to any liquid or water), and the cost of repair is literally 2x the price of a new phone. (Later the guy replaced the battery by himself and phone was working fine, so as You can see liquid damaged motherboard was BS)
I do understand that bad reviews are normal and most repair centers have at least one or two of those, but.. like 2-3 years ago I bought a tablet (it cost around $75). I just needed some cheap tablet to watch YT videos etc. After some time the tablet randomly died and I sent it to the SAME repair center that OP uses. After 3-4 weeks I got an email saying that tablet repair will cost around $100 (30 USD more than price of a new tablet) and guess what they said when I asked them what's wrong with it. They said that sim card pins are shorted and it killed the motherboard. Well. I'm not a phone/tablet repair expert so I can't tell if shorted sim card pins can break Your motherboard. (Later I tried shorting sim card pins on some old flip phone and nothing happened, but then again, newer technology might be more sensitive IDK) But! The problem is.. that tablet didn't have a sim card slot! . Eventually after 2 months of fighting with the store and the repair center, store agreed to give me my money back and I just saved it and bought Mi Pad 2 later from China (it still works perfectly!).
So as You can see, even I already had terrible experience with this repair center. Now, my question is. What am I supposed to do now? I don't really care about warranty as local repair services charge 1/3rd of the price for repair. So I can just give my phone to them and lose the warranty. Or I can order replacement back and replace it by myself. Or I can send my phone to that repair center that OP uses and most likely never see my phone again or get a 500 USD bill.
What should I do guys? Right now I'm thinking about replacing the back glass by myself. I've done it before like 3 times (on my family's phones) and everything went pretty smoothly. Or I could just give it to local repair service and they will fix it in 1 hour if I'll give them my phone and new back glass.
(Remember that this repair center isn't OP's official repair center, they repair a lot of no brand/generic smartphones and tablets, sadly including OP's phones.)
There are no easy answers. You can purchase the back housing directly from OP or from the following link for under $20
https://www.witrigs.com/oem-battery-cover-camera-lens-ring-replacement-for-oneplus-6-midnight-black
or you can look at iFixit website for the back panel
I would suggest taking it to the place like: https://www.ubreakifix.com/locations (Samsung uses their services). If they ask for around $50-$75 for the labor cost, you will get the back glass replaced for under $100 which (at least to me) seems reasonable cost. Good luck. Keep us posted which route did you end up taking?

Huge Thanks for telling me about Witrigs website! They even sell all tools needed for the repair.
I decided that I won't send it to that repair center. Even reviews posted this month are negative. So they haven't changed for sure. I don't care about warranty so I'm just going to fix it by myself most likely. Tomorrow I'll go to my local repair service and I'm going to ask them how much they want for back replacement if I'll give them new back glass + phone. If it won't be too expensive then I'll order new back from Witrigs or AliExpress and then I'll give them everything and they will fix it. And if they are going to ask for too much then I'm just going to fix it by myself.
Last time I asked them for display replacement cost (Galaxy S6) they said that they will charge me $30 + new display price. It was some time ago though.
We will see. Thanks for the links!
Good luck!! I think other users will benefit if you loop back and let us know the total cost and difficulty in getting the parts, etc. Take care.
Do it yourself. Slow and carefully. Watch some youtube video how to do it. Good luck!
Another vote on doing it yourself, especially since you've done this type thing before. Just be mindful of trying to do this in a somewhat dust free environment since you are removing the camera cover... don't want to get dust or fingerprints on inside of that cover or the lens that will stay forever. And make sure to seal that camera good.
Good luck :good:
