My Phone's data indicator alternates between 3G and H moment by moment. What exactly do the indicators mean as for as data speeds and variants of 3g protocols in use? (I am looking for a technical answer)

Hi,
H stands for HSUPA, or High-Speed Uplink Packet Access.
H = 3G

The manual is fairly straight forward, so in order of Speed:
G GPRS connected
G+arrows GPRS in use
E EDGE connected
E+arrows EDGE in use
3G 3G connected
3G+arrows 3G in use
H HSDPA connected
H+arrows HSDPA in use
Have a look at something like http://blog.ruggedandmobile.com/2010/01/26/a-guide-on-the-difference-between-gprs-edge-3g-and-hsdpa/ for more info.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3G
Actually, if the provider supports HSDPA and HSUPA, the indicator switches to "H" from "3G" when data is being transferred over the network. When no data is transmitted, the indicator shows "3G".

So I flashed Romeos2 to my new Fuze. It works fine, and the 3G logo went away and was replaced with the H logo. However, now when I use data, it is painfully slow. I'm assuming that its using edge - anyone have this issue? Any solution? I have the PDA data plan.
is it possible tha ROMeOS is meant for euro and asian Touch pro's meaning it wont get the 3G working in the US
TBH you should post this in the ROMeOS forum
You should also make sure that your data settings are set up properly for AT&T. They may not be after the flash.

do a search for htc connection setup. that will give you the proper network settings.
Isnt the H for HSDPA which is faster than 3G? Mines been doing the same thing.
i have the same problem. (no 3G or HSDPA only GPRS/EDGE)
tried 3 different roms and 3 different radios (with the .32 i didn't get any http connection at all, but icq etc. worked)
i have an german tp without branding ...
solved my problem ... 3G was deaktivated (default by the provider [o2])

so I did a search and found multiple .cab files for it. How do I know which one is good for AT&T? Does anyone know if ROMeOS2 supports AT&T connection properly?
H stands for HSDPA, which is a technical term for 3G.
E stands for EDGE.
G stands for GRPS.
When I installed ROMeOS on my Fuze, there was a connection window that popped up that had country and carrier drop down boxes. Try going through the connection settings and see if you can find something like that.

HSDPA is the high-speed version of UMTS/WCDMA/3G.
G stands for GPRS.
E stands for EGPRS or EDGE meaning high-speed GPRS.
I was just logging in to correct myself! Thanks ;-)

This is incorrect. 3G is the blanket term used for high speed mobile data. If you have an ATT branded phone and it shows 3G then you are on a UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications system) network which is slower than HSDPA (which stands for high speed download packet access) but still faster thank EDGE or EGPRS or whatever you want to call it. However, when I tested RomeOS on my Fuze, I too got the H symbol instead of a 3G one. I am fairly certain that in order to make the Fuze less confusing, an ATT branded Fuze will show 3G for both UMTS and HSDPA. I am now back on a modified ATT ROM by NotaTreoFan and it shows 3G when I am in the same spot at my highschool's cafeteria as where RomeOS showed an H. Hope this clears things up (or possibly makes them more confusing).
Edit: Looks like we all wanted to correct it
I know that 4g is better than HSUPA and 3g.
I recently upgraded my phone to Gingerbreadman.
That upgrade made my phone from HSUPA (HSPA) to 3g connection.
Im not quiet sure if it made my connection slower or its the same.
can anyone tell me more informations about this connection? The 3g word has been bothering me(maybe because ive been so used to looking at the HSPA)

What were your speeds like before you did this "upgrade", and what are they like now?
HSUPA has to do with upload
HSDPA has to do with download
HSPA is 3G
HSPA+ is 3.5G which is what at&t calls "4G"
LTE is true 4G and at&t doesn't offer this as of now.

Does the ROM you are using have the H+ symbol or does it just show 3G or H?
I think, regardless of what it shows, as long as your data speeds are not affected, then its normal.

When idle cm7 will stay on 3g and switch to 4g when your using data to help conserve battey life. 3G has a 3G icon and 4G has the H icon.

HSPA+ is an evolution of 3G technology. T-Mobile markets it as 4G since the speeds are comparable with other current 4G networks. The "H" symbol is actually more accurate a representation of which you're connected to because its an HSPA+ network.

Not with the G2X. The icon always says "H" because the phone is always connected to the HSPA network.
I remember with my Nexus One it would say 3G and then switch to H when it was downloading something. But that's because the N1 was only capable of HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access), not full HSPA+, so it would say "H" when it was downloading data to the phone and otherwise would display 3G.
G2X CM7
There's also a G symbol available if you can't even get EDGE network. Found that out a couple days ago.
My phone does something weird. When the data mode, shown beside the battery icon, is shown as 3G, no data transfer can be made until it is changed to 'H'. This gets very annoying.
The problem is that it stays at 3G until I want to do some data transfer, then it changes to 'H' which takes some time.
Anybody gets this as well? Is there anyway to prevent this?

H means hsdpa, which is High Speed Downlink Packet Access. It is 3.5G. And it is faster than 3G.

Correct me if I'm wrong. H means HSPA, which is 3.5G, and 3G is 3G in itself, and G is 2G? I thought 2G didn't allow data transmission? So isn't 'G', 3G?
I understand HSPA is supposed to be faster than 3G, but the problem is that 3G doesn't allow any data transmission.

"WCDMA"
H = HSPA = 3.5G
3G = 3G
"GSM"
E = EDGE = 2.5G
G = GPRS = 2G
All of them allow data access, or should do anyway.

No, "G" is not "3G". "G" means GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and is an old standart to transfer data via GSM. It is, in fact, the slowest ond one of the oldest.
There are two networks, "2G" which is "G" or "E" (EDGE which is is a litlle bit faster than "GPRS" - and "3G" (now even "4G" ) which is a high spead network. "H" should mean "HSDPA" or "HSPA"
Oooops, to slow.
In addition: Via 3G you can do data connection and phone calls at the same time, this you can not do in 2G

Your phone will check to see what the best connection available is before downloading. The wait is down to your network provider's service and availability. And possibly your radio. It's not that it wont download on 3G. It will. It's just that 99 times out of 100 if 3G is available, so is HSDPA so it'll go for that one over 3G every time. Unless you are on my network provider. Then you'd get better consistent data transfer over a piece of wet string.
You could go into your phone setting and choose 'WCDMA only' if you generally have good coverage and want to cut the wait out?
Dial *#*#4636#*#*, from the resulting menu select 'Phone Information' then scroll to the bottom and change the drop-down menu to 'WCDMA only'.
Does that help?
Tip:
You can also do this without dialing a code:
Got to settings/wireless & network/Mobile network/Network mode
So you don't have to remember the code if you want to change settings

I tried this. For now it seems that it is stuck at HSPA now! Thanks! Am I right to assume that under WCDMA only mode, I either get HSPA data or no data at all? The phone will not go to 3G or 2G right? (there's no 2.5G here)
Thanks to the others who clarified the 2G,3G,3.5G terms. I understand it more clearly now!

WCDMA only means you will only have HSPA and 3G connections. You will not have, as you wrote, 2G. 2.5G means EDGE which is still a 2G connection but a little bit faster than GPRS, and right, you will not have that.

When I got my nexus 5, I was coming from the Nexus 4. I had to call AT&T get 4G enabled. The process of doing so, they had to get my new IMEI code and enable it on their side.
Before that change, I was getting 3 mbs download, now I am getting 25 mb/s.

- Do you have the right APN selected or configured for your client?
- GoSmart I believe throttles to 3G speeds:
$35 plan includes web at 2G speeds. $45 plan starts at 3G and upon 5GB of use in a cycle is reduced to 2Gspeeds for remainder of cycle.

- You can go to the phone menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and enable or disable the networks you're using. In your case, you can lose the CDMA network. You can try enabling the LTE network from there, but I suspect GoSmart users are not allowed on that network.

It's just icon. Google Nexus 5 actually doesn't have "H+" icon so it will indicate only "H" every time.
However you can check network type by going to Settings - About phone - Status. If you are on HSPA+ network, you'll see HSPA+.
I have just HSPA at home so can't prove it by proper screenshot.
You can also check network type by installing Netmonitor or Gmon (both available on Play Store).
HSDPA - up to 7,2 Mbit/s
HSPA - up to 14,4 Mbit/s
HSPA+ - up to 21,6 Mbit/s (respectively 43,2 Mbit/s if you carrier supports HSPA+ 42/HSPA+ DC - some American carriers say it's 4G. Actually it's 3.75G but marketing is everywhere.)

You got that almost right.
Actually,
HSPA 7.2 Mbit/s
HSPA-DC 14.4 Mbit/s
It is the same dual channel thing as with H+
HSDPA is actually just the Downstream of HSPA. HSPA stands for High Speed Packet Access and consists of HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) and HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) as its down- and uplink.
I am also having an issue. The network shows HSPA under settings, and I know my plan supports HSPA+. The APNs are the same as they have always been. Any ideas?
