Guide for Chinese a5000 - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Posted this elsewhere but I guess it will be helpful to some who have gone through what I have to recover their phone.
This is to speed up, root or flash.
Back up your data first using a back up program.
Auto task killers lag on this phone, uninstall.
Or download 91 china phone suite, when open it will be in chinese. Go to the upper left of the program to the android picture and click on the lower bubble by the right of the android's head, a sub menu opens go to the third option and select english. Go to the files section and back up.
Open the phone and check you have the IMEI numbers listed inside under the battery or dial *#06#
Root your phone either z4root which works fine or with superoneclick with the normal usb cable, you can now remove system apps with various apps. Search first for system apps lists which are safe to remove, reboot.
If you've gone too far and it won't boot then search for ginger yoshi zip for a5000 make sure you choose either r=resistive or c=capacitice to suit your screen, though both will boot, the touch screen won't work if it's the wrong firmware. Do not unzip.
Copy file to sd card first renaming the yoshi zip to update.zip.
Turn off phone, turn on again by holding volume up and power at the same time which boots into recovery mode.
Choose update.zip, when finished clear cache and data and remove battery for 20 seconds and reboot. If all fails try again.....
My numbers were fine after install but many aren't search for an IMEI tool to re-enter them.
With yoshi the phone is like a new phone, faster, louder, clearer, boots within 20 secs and instead of struggling to keep an average of 30 meg memory free it's over 150! It also says 3g on the status.
It has problems like the market not working which can apparently be fixed and never fixed my bluetooth paired but not connected problem but for a 100 quid it's fine for me.
I downloaded that many roms I'm not sure which link I got the Ginger Yoshi resistive rom from, can anyone post the link? This is also the reason this is posted here in the hope someone else has the rom link.

I used the one here (first link of the post for A5000 resistive)
forum.chinafonini.it/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=10648&st=0&sk=t&sd=a
It worked, but some features seems missing (account management, camera,...)

Any new(er) touchpad drivers/sw?

I'm becoming increasingly disenchanted with this thing day by day. I love the dual core, 512MB ram, wifi n and especially the 1080p capability, but is it worth the trouble? I begin to wonder...
Anyway, this just started happening recently to a point where it's become increasingly frustrating. I'm not sure if the enhancement pack or something else is the cause - I don't think it's the hardware unless it's going bad with time (hopefully not the case!). I haven't pinpoint anything, all I can say is that the last thing I did install was the enh. pack and that otherwise it's just stock 3389 on there.
My screen is becoming less and less responsive. Parts of it, are now taking a few touches to activate. The reason I don't think it's the screen itself or hardware is that after a while it seems fine - but after a fresh startup it's hell to do anything on there and it's not because of starting processes etc. because if I turn the screen to portrait mode I can touch the places I need activated and they'll work.
A definite area of contention for me, for example is the battery and wifi indicator which are, on first/fresh boot impossible to activate now. It takes a good 5 minutes of touching the screen all over the place to get it to a point where I can actually bring up the bubble dialogs from those 2 icons OR if I turn it to portrait mode, it will work.
I don't remember the screen ever being like this from fresh stock (3389) or even stock + gapps so I'm wondering if there's something in the enh pack interfering with touch driver performance or if there are new touch drivers in there that aren't as good as the old ones. The enh pack def. makes the pad feel quicker and I like the new Gmarket in there so now I have to decide between a faster/quicker but somewhat unresponsive device or an average speed device which is more responsive off the bat. Then there's of course the other possibility which is that it's not the software at all, but that the hardware really is finicky...in which case nothing would really make it work as it should. Oy veh.

Yeah, lots of us have had touch screen sensitivity issues. Luckily we figured out how to fix them. It's very simple.
If you are running the latest TNT Lite or Vegan ROM beta 4, the fix is very simple - drop an empty text file called "calibration.ini" in your /sdcard directory (you can copy it over from your desktop via USB cable, or just use ES File Explorer or similar file manager with create capability to create the file) and reboot, and *DON'T* touch the screen while your G Tab is rebooting. Voila, re-calibrated touchscreen, very sensitive again. Once it's working well, just delete that calibration.ini file so it doesn't recalibrate on every boot.
On earlier versions of the ROMs or on the stock 3389 ROM, the calibration executable looked for calibration.ini in the /sdcard2 directory so you needed an external microSD card to calibrate your touchscreen.
There's a whole thread on this called "touch screen sensitivity" or something like that where we figured all this stuff out originally.

I already tried that and it had 0 effect. First I tried it in the original root, then I tried it on my actual SD card root. No effect whatsoever as to the accuracy or sensitivity of the screen. That is why I bothered to make this post at all.
In fact, I think I even made a post in a thread mentioning calibration.ini a few days ago. It def. does not work for me.

Hmmm, that's weird. Okay, let me step you through running a manual calibration:
1) Create calibration.ini in the /sdcard directory (as described above)
2) Install "Android Terminal Emulator" from Market if you haven't already (it's free)
3) Run Terminal Emulator. Press menu button then Toggle Soft Keyboard to get the keyboard up.
4) type "/system/bin/TSCalibration" into the terminal and press enter
Let us know what output you see (if it's looking in /sdcard2 for calibration.ini instead it will tell you, if there's an error it will tell you, etc.).
/sdcard2
I think the post said you tried /sdcard and that won't work. You need a microSD crd inserted as /sdcard2 to do the fix and it doesn't work on the /sdcard that comes with the device.

The enhancement pack includes the TSCalibration that works off of /sdcard, not /sdcard2.
"First I tried it in the original root, then I tried it on my actual SD card root."
Original root = internal storage/sd card, SD card root = sd card root, lol...as in little chip you stick into the phone or sd card 2.
I mentioned I tried both. I will attempt what rcg recommends and let you know.
Update: I got terminal emulator by zta labs (the only one I see in the android market as somehow it broke itself) and all that app does is force close.
Update 2: I got frustrated and just wiped it all and went back to 3899. Fixed now. Thanks all for attempting to help. Think I'm going to suck it up and stick with stock until 2.3 or Honeycomb comes.

Firmware for the Flytouch II - ver 2.1-update1 v1.9:#2852

Note: Why not try the Froyo NAND Release by Stratulus
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831178
Its safer then trying this one..as there are a few bricked pads from this release.. so.. beaware before you play with it..
Thought I would prune this out of the Rom development thread as this way we can leave stragulus & friends to keep working on his developments..
Post all your comments to here on this new update so that we can work out the improvements and not so improvements to the update
As of 7th Feb there is still not any links to a stable SDcard upgrade.. as soon as I find one will post the links..
This Manual upgrade link is in part to the information out of this site..

Just did it.. but. using the USB cable method..
As have been said.. change the sequence from the MSword file
1: Load the drivers for Uburn .. IUW driver in the directory otg file=secbulk.inf (xp go to dir.. right click on file then “install”)
I rebooted my xp machine at this point… ) plug in the pad.. XP should find it as a hard drive.. Might even make you install the secbulk.sys file..
2: Burn Uboot .. (no 4 in the MSfile..) I burnt the 0.6.1.5_1.4.587_GT2005 version (as yet not sure if thats the right one.. will find out as I play with the thing)
Then my pad kinda freaked out on the reboot with some screen tests.. it should tell you that this will take 2 minutes.. Mine even had a split screen thing going..
Note: I didn’t close the IUW program at anytime.. and kept plugging and unplugging things in during the process..
2: do the easy burn process as per No 1 ..MSword file.. let it burn everything in…
3: Do the reboot.. once again.. weird screen tests .. lots of blinking going on..
(DDRII study ok.. Press back.. a 615 number to the right bottom of screen.. )
Little android with a curser blinking for a while.. Then a new look Metallic Android boot screen..
Took a while to go through this process.. Some sounds then into the new look screen…
K.. hope this saves someone time.. I have just figured that with all these updates I most as well use the USB cable method now.. as the sdcard method means you have to deal with burning to a dedicated SD card..
I used this method on one of the other updates then found that the card was screwed.. i.e it had a was a bootable card.. so couldnt stay in the top slot.. and I kept on putting it in there by mistake.. if you have problems with your card and you need to bring it back to a clean slate.. use this..
HDD Low Level Format Tool
http://hddguru.com/software/2006.04.12-HDD-Low-Level-Format-Tool/
Don't try using the right click format in Windows.. it will just give you pain..
K.. its looking good.. noticed that its got VPN services now.. thats great news.. as I use it on my phone.. and was going nuts trying programs over the last few days to try to get a VPN going.. and if you are doing a stint in China like me at the moment.. you gotta have a VPN to do normal things..
Plenty of other new things in there.. and looking forward to playing with it..
I would almost say by the feel and look that we now have something worth playing with..
of course.. most of us on this thread (regulars) will be flicking these off and getting a new one within 6 months..
but its been fun playing with it as it is..
My wish now is.. can someone work out how we can get some Ram on board.. can it be done?
a little soldering?
Can it be done? I don't know enough about chips apart from popping them in and out.. but.. hey.. I would give it a go..
as this is why I brought this in the first place..

This was taking from the Sladedroid thread.. Creds got to Duno..
Ok, I downloaded the 2 files:
MID-2.1-update1 v1.9-2852-20110110.rar
iuw1.1-english.rar
Extracted them to a new folder.
Tried to use the new burntool to burn WWE10B_Android_393477-v9full.ius direct.
It burned, but with no changings!
Then I used the 2nd way, to make a bootable sd-card (2GB) with the new burntool.
Booted with the sd-card, Pad wrote something with updating and reboot, but no changings!
Then I decided to update the u-boot ... hmmm ... (be carefull with that!)
I used the doc in the iuw1.1-english.rar - UIWxyz-2003.doc and decided to use the u-boot-nand.bin from the
0.6.1.2_1.4.587_OV2655 folder.
(didn't know if that is/was the right file, it was a risc!)
Burned the U0 = /0.6.1.2_1.4.587_OV2655/u-boot-nand.bin
rebooted the Pad (incl. sd-card) and then it was possible for me to make the update.
During the updates are some tests from the system, I think graphic and ram ...
After reboot it was hanging on "ANDROID" (screen), was waiting about 10 min. ... then I made a reset
Pad was booting again ... "ANDROID" (screen)... then screen calibration ...
To make the sd-card full usable again delete all partitions from the sd-card on windows with the own
system tools from windows, you don't need to download a software to create/delete or format a partition on windows!

Reserved for FAQ's
New in this Rom..
1: No more registration hack needed.. they seem to have moved away from this.. but
2: infomarket - they have you to sign up to their new market for apps.
3: Webtv - Good idea and I can see where they are going with it. I used PPTV here in China when my Cable goes down.. so it would be nice to have some TV on the pad when I have a good connection going..
4: VPN service - Same as on the Droidphones.. this is great as now allows me to use my VPN service
5: Mypad - New file management software - getting there.. nice menu's for editing and shifting files -- Seems to be the "Helen browser.apk" (someone else can confirm this please??) as I have had a few force closes on it when going into Titaniumbackup folders and it sees the zipped files..
6: New Videoplayer - seems to not to be calling CCplayer -- does a scan of your drives and or any usb drives you plug in.. I tested a flv's, wmv, avi, mp4 all worked fine..
7:"APKManager" Also I noticed that the apk's I loaded up with "appmonster pro" as not showing in any of the screens.. but they show installed in appmonster and also in my "folder organiser" setups.. Strange.. its like the "APKManager" wants to have charge of the system.. I wouid guess that this is tied in with the "infotm market" as none of the apps show in that either..

I am attempting to flash. I think that it might not be working thought because it said board undetected however it appeared to flash correctly. I am now up and it appears that I was right that it did NOT flash. The version number is the same... I'm about to flash a sdcard and see if i can flash that way.
Still no luck... Anyone have any luck flashing this new firmware??
EDIT: flashing instructions... Flash the u0 first then reboot your device will run a 2 minute test. After that it will still be wowpad. Next flash like the instructions instruct. you should now get a very stock android boot screen. That is where I am currently... I will let you know when it boots. First boot takes a while as always.
This is also the most responsive rom that I have used so far. You may have to reflash the U0 to get the camera to work. I flashed 0V2655
One more thing... I was considering getting rid of my tablet due to lag and uselessness but now after flashing this rom I am gonna keep it and use it more. Just my 2 cents letting you know how much batter this rom is.

L33.. I did a bit of a check on ius files and not sure if I headed in to the right area.. but it seems they are part of the PHP family..
I got to this thread and dug a bit deeper but then it all started to go down hill.. lol.. I think we need a dedicated Programmer that is used to dealing with these files..

if you want to change from the stock "home" launcher, go into system-apps in root and change the "launcher.apk"
I got my flying now with ADW.. the stock one is nice but stills seems to have a bit of bloat to it..
lol you can see I had to much time on my hands.. so have been able to burn this thing like 3 times today from my screwups..
Click to collapse
Edit : I have gone back to stock.. Had problems loading ADW after a few boots..
started getting a system error I think it was coming out of Settingsprovider or setupwizard apk's.. I didnt document it as was getting a bit tired with the rebotting of it..
Anyone else can have a crack at it and once it is confirmed that there is a stable switch of a stable swop.. let me know and I will give it a go
Wifi noise still there.. but not as bad... it used to be that the hiss was going all the time.. but its not now.. and then the wifi.. tick tick tick. comes on once you turn it on.. and I mean.. once you turn it on in software not switch.. as I have been testing it with the switch on..
Edits: Got ADW going and setup again, but its from the first boot screen I have to launch it.. I just setup up a widget and so once system boots I tap it and it now goes in to my normal setup that I like to use..
haven't figured out which system apk's to change to allow it to take command of the Home button.. but it is working and seems stable..
I have it set with 8x8 rows, columns, with the 5 zoom screens working..
Confirmed that I can "touch" screen and add Widgets to the screen.. which is something that System home wont let you do..
I use "folder organizer" on it.. with settings of "widget size" 4x2 then in the widget settings I am using 5 rows.. and a setting of 4x2..
The nice thing about this is that I can tap it to "edit" and do a manual resizing of the box.
Note: This next Procedure is still unstable.. do not try it unless you have a Task manager that is loaded to the top bar, as you will need to use it if your tablet starts to loop out on you..
I am using Battery saver by easyfilter as it is letting me grab it from the top and kill processes..
Edit: just loaded "Multitasking Pro" on to it.. and got it to take over the home key when pushed..and the little home icon to the right hand side so now I can jump between the screens I want and not getting pushed by "home" to go to their so called wowhome.. (or the new Launcher.apk).. so once I hit home it pops up in the middle of the screen and gives me a srollable inlay list of programs that are open.. so now it feels a bit like my HTC EVO with Sense..nice..
I don't notice any problems so far and or decrease in speeds..
Edit: On booting I get to the Pause screen, it sits here fine and loads up everything in the background.. then when I flick to go to home screen I am getting forced closes of "multitasker".. (I would say it is fighting for resources with the Wowhome.... thus got to use the task manager to close things.. funny thing here is that it is not actually closing "ADW" or "multitasker" as once I clear the programs that pop up it then boots into my home ADW screen with "Multi-tasking" working and the Wowhome killed..
This is nice, but.. its the boot process that is a painful.. as I only get about 6-8 attempts to rip down the Task manager before the Tab freezes..
Next step is to rename "launcher.apk" to see if I can release it from trying to claim the resources that I want the other two to take.. so here goes...
Nope.. didn't do anything.. still getting force close's on the multitasking.. but at least by using the above method I am not having to do a factory reset as I can kill the looping process.. So now its just a matter of trial and error.. rename everything that usually starts on the wow-home and see which one is getting in the way of "multitasking"
Edit Took Multitasking off.. had to do a manual delete of it, as the program installers didn't let me take it out.. but once done I hit the "home key" and it gave me the usual option of what do I want to "map" to it.. so now I mapped it to ADW and seems to be be running fine..
confirmed that after 5 boots ADW is now home and I have renamed "launcher.apk" back to original state, will try to transfer some screen shots over the next few days..
time out from this thing..
I BURNED NEW VERSION of the PROGRAM, ALL PASSED FINE, BUT did NOT WORK CAMERA, I BEGAN burn u0 AS it is RECOMMENDED In DESCRIPTION To PROGRAMEE. AFTER BURN u-boot.bin GT2005, HAS GOT BRICK!!!
ON BUTTON POWER does NOT, NO VIBRATIONS , TRIED ANY COMBINATIONS, ALL ELSE BRICK, HELP WHO CAN!!!
WHAT have SAID HERE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831178&page=134 I killed MY flash!!!
AS NOW I CAN brighten HIS ? and can I this does their own power not using special device, which beside me simply no!
DD,
Would love to help you but I dont know what you are trying to say..
its seems you are getting a "no response" from your power buttons..
but you are also saying that you can see your Battery meter, Which kinda tells me you are seeing the header but no other screen..
I got this too when I screwed around with the change of loader to ADW..
What I did was re: burn the WWE10B_Android_393477-v9full.ius
This was to reset all the files and operation system..
I also had the problems with the camera and burnt both of the drivers for them..
works now..
Also, as a note.. I had some problems with the on/off button.. i.e not turning off right away.. what I did was just leave it for a few minutes. then Push and hold it for 4 seconds or so.. then release it.. I made sure all things plugged in to it where pulled out.. things like the USB mouse, keyboard or USB to USB cords..
my button combinations are
"Power+Home" ... gets me to sd options and factory reset
To burn recover press "Power+Home+Back" and hold it.
Then "back" to get it to burn a recover process..
K.. hope you get it back..
shall tell as I did
1)folder OV2655 burned u-boot-nand.bin
2) burned WWE10B_Android_393477-v9full.ius
board was loaded all were fine, only did not work camera.
I burned folder GT2005 u-boot-nand.bin
device was included but camera on former did not work!!!
whereupon I burned folder GT2005 u-boot.bin
the rally of the rebooting device was not included and ceased to respond to any actions. single charger at connection, fires red indicator of the charge to batteries!!!
For me just happens the same. I burn the U0 flash with the u-boot-nand.bin from OV2655 folder and everythng was fine; on the screen appear the message that i could remove the OTG and reboot but...then my FT2 just do not reboot. It only vibrates continuosly (more that one hour then I hit the reset just to stop it) without going on. The screen remain blank. I've tried all the possibile buttons combination in order to reach the programing state or the recovery console without success. I can charge the battery cause I can see the redlight on the pad...I've prepared a 2gb SD with the rom WWE10B_Android_393477-v9full.ius, made with iuw, and is inserted in the boot tf reader, without success

DD,
You say you burnt the "GT2005 u-boot.bin " ...
This could be your problem.. as no where in any instructions I have read so far says.. "burn -- u-boot.bin"
But the pictures and the writing in the MSword file clearly says...
4. Buring of Uboot
Get the OTG tools ready, u-boot-nand.bin files for 10- or 8-inch tablets; connect the devices and open the IUW software as follows:
Click to collapse
As I don't know enough about the .bin files, you could only hope that someone more knowledgeable chimes in with a fix for you..
As said before, I burnt GT2005 - u-boot-nand.bin - 1st... had only green for a camera..
then burnt OV2655 - u-boot-nand.bin - 2nd.. and it works like a charm..
So the moral of the story at this stage ( and it might be going in to the FAQ at the top)... dont Burn - U-boot.bin.. be careful of what you are doing.. as you could brick your flytouch...
What are these GT2005/OV .. directories you are talking about?
The rom I download has 0.6.1.2 and 0.6.1.5 directories containg u-boot-nand.bin files.
I can confirm that it's required to burn one of those to U0 first, before using the easyburn setting to flash the entire .ius file. Flashing the pad seems to take 2 steps: 1. Upload file to be flashed to device. 2. Flash uploaded file to nand. Without burning U0 first with the new u-boot version, it will *NOT* do step 2. But once you *have* flashed the new u-boot, you don't have to do it again, ever. Just reflash the *.ius file using easyburn.
To confirm that step 2 takes place, the pad will display texts and progress bars on its screen after the IUW tool has uploaded the .ius file. This takes a few minutes at most.
In the rom dev thread I have explained how to extract the ramdisk, kernel and system images from the .ius file. I'll move it to here:

You can use these images directly in burntool, though I think you have to flash U0 before they will actually work. Without doing that, I'm seeing the old boot image (green screen) somehow.
I was wondering whether someone form the gurus could have transformed the existing 2852 firm into a one upgradable vias a SD card (in the form of update.zip). I am afraid i will not dare do all this complicated steps (seeing already 3 owners of bricked flytouches). Thank you!
What are these GT2005/OV .. directories you are talking about?
The rom I download has 0.6.1.2 and 0.6.1.5 directories containg u-boot-nand.bin files.

stragulus, you would be seeing what we all have got, if they are downloading the same files..
0.6.1.5_1.4.587_GT2005
6x files.. u-boot-nand.bin, u-boot.img, u-boot.bin, spl.S, u-boot.S, u-boot-spl.bin
0.6.1.2_1.4.587_OV2655
2x files.. u-boot-nand.bin & u-boot.img
I think the problem is that they didn't read the instructions before loading files in to the IUW program

Ouch.. any more info you can give? You used the supplied IUW tool? On what OS? Native, or in a virtual machine..? It would also help to know the board revision, which you can find if you open up the device. There's a guide on that somewhere. Can anyone else who has this problem also report this information?
I flashed the other version (GT2500) to U0 without any problems. Except that the camera doesn't work.
Here are some info.
Os Windows XP Pro
Soft for burn IUW tool
No Virtual machine
I cannot read the board rev (my pad is still closed...)
Hope someone could find a solution...
Flashing U0 is risky.. I wonder if those problems could be due to bad bits in the nand flash? Those pads really should have a non-flashable routine that allows one to reflash the bootloaders. Perhaps they can still be saved with a jtag cable..??
I was thinking the same...Do you know if there is some sort of jtag interface such as routers or Satellite STB? I made my personal jtag interface some years ago just to operate on some devices adn must be somewhere in my desktop...
who will answer? my device possible to return to lifes ?

Kogan Agora Tablet (TCC8803 based)

This is a continuation of the generic TCC8803 thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119778
IMPORTANT - THERE IS A SYSTEM APP CALLED FWTOOL. DO NOT USE IT TO FLASH FIRMWARE OR YOU MAY END UP BRICKING YOUR TOUCHSCREEN. ALSO DO NOT FLASH ANY VERSION OF lk.rom OR YOU WILL BRICK YOUR TABLET.
To install clockworkmod
Download EM73-8K-recovery-signed.zip below. Rename it to update.zip and copy it to the root of your SD card.
With your tablet already turned off, press and hold down the Back button and then press the power on button while still holding down the Back button. This will open stock Recovery.
Use the buttons on the top of your tablet to navigate your way through recovery and to select menu items (menu = down, back = returns to previous menu, home = selects option).
Navigate to apply update.zip & follow the instructions. Reboot.
To use clockworkmod just press and hold down the Back button while powering up your tablet. Navigate the menu via the buttons (menu = down, back = returns to previous menu, home = selects option).
To make a Nandroid (clockworkmod) backup boot into clockworkmod recovery & navigate down to Backup then follow the instructions.
To root your tablet ** please see comment at end of post before continuing past this point
+++Make a full Nandroid (clockworkmod) backup before attempting this+++
Download & unzip Superoneclick from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 - NB you may need to turn off any antivirus program on your PC to allow downloading & use of Superoneclick.
Download & unzip the relevant Drivers folder (32 or 64 bit) from link below then connect your (powered on) tablet to your PC & point Device Manager to your unzipped drivers folder when it is looking for drivers.
Make sure USB debugging is allowed on your tablet (Settings -> Development -> USB debugging)
Right-click on Superoneclick.exe, select Run as administrator then click on the Root button. It will take 2 or 3 minutes for your device to be rooted.
This procedure has worked for my own tablet but I accept no responsibility if you end up bricking your device!
Another way to root your tablet is at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119778
To stop battery drain & prevent screen from waking every few minutes - **only for original Kogan ROM**
(with thanks to hallokitty for this fix)
This happens because the tablet keeps looking for the 3G signal it cannot ever receive. To fix this, go to System/app using Root Explorer from the Market, delete (or rename) phone.apk and TelephonyProvider.apk. You will immediately start getting errors but just use the reset button at the back of the tablet and when you reboot the problem has been solved. If you ever want to restore these apk's (e.g. if you want to use a 3G modem) just flash the phone+telephony zip file below using clockwork mod.
Clockworkmod rescue backups
I've done a factory reset & wipe of my tablet & made clockworkmod backups which I've linked to below. Make sure you do a full Nandroid backup before applying any of these. Unzip the file & place it in the appropriate Nandroid folder on your SD card (/clockworkmod/backup/), don't try to flash the zip file using CWM! These are a slightly slimmed down versions of the ROMs - for the Kogan ROM I've removed phone.apk, telephony.apk, Email, Facebook, Twitter, FW tool (dangerous to have), ES Explorer, Live Wallpapers and ES task manager. I've upgraded Spare Parts to Spare Parts + and added Astro File Manager as a user app. I had removed most of these things from my ROM before I was ever asked to make this backup so if you want to reinstall them you can get them from the Market or flash the relevant apk's into the system/app folder using CWM. The ROM is still rooted. You will need to do a factory reset & wipe the Data partition & Dalvik cache with CWM prior to doing this. If you want to use a 3G modem you will need to flash the "phone + telephony.zip" file listed below with clockworkmod.
Kogan firmware clockworkmod rescue backup: http://www.mediafire.com/?izfedrz97iowi34
**If you're really lazy you can combine rooting the tablet, removing unnecessary system apps & applying the screen wake fix by installing clockworkmod then restoring the rescue backup (NB make sure you make your own Nandroid backup first!!!).
CM7 runs extremely well on the Kogan except for HDMI out & Camera which don't work yet. You will also need to install Gmail & Youtube apps from the Market if you want them. Make sure you do a full CWM/Nandroid backup before trying this as I had problems with an unresponsive touchscreen after flashing the most recent CM7 ROM. For more info head here.
Tips & Tricks
MoboPlayer is a good video player, particularly for its ability to let you change the volume & screen brightness by swiping up & down directly on the video you are watching. The volume softkeys on the Kogan are not visible if any app is in fullscreen mode.
Titanium Backup may not show all installed apps or any system apps. To fix this go to Titanium Backup's Preferences and tick "Force use system Busybox" and "Force use system SQlite".

Lucky you - they're really dragging their heels with mine. Can you upload the kernel & we can see about getting clockworkmod for it?
How do you rate it as a tablet? Is the keyboard OK? - some people have said it's a bit carp.
I got mine today. It's going back as soon as I can get Kogan to respond.
Turns itself on & off at random, poor quality screen, sound, responsiveness.
Touchscreen activates itself without being touched.
What was I thinking? I guess you get what you pay for.
Now if only I could get them to reply to an email.......
Ok i have to agree you get what you pay for so i had low exectations. Its no flyer, tab, transformer but then it was a 1/4 of the cost. Yes the screen has issues (partly i think due to the screen protecter and battery life is poor though ive had this on for about 2 hrs now and its about 2/3rds down.
All in all im happy though going to live with it for a bit and i reserve the right to change my mind.
Wil right more when i have aproper keyboard
yeh i get the same problem with the screen comming on and off randomly.. i wish i could stop that =P (would save the 3 hour battery life i have to 4 hours!)
you get what you pay for =P but i thought the screen was quite good considering.
did you try the recovery yet?
how nice would it be to port oxygen to the kogan haha

The screen keeps coming on as the OS is looking for a 3G signal all the time. If you switch it to airplane mode it should stop happening. Or use http://www.appbrain.com/app/airplane-mode-wi-fi-tool/net.geekherd.airplanemode . Or you could even try adjusting the settings to use 2G only.
I can't adjust to 2g only on mine - it's greyed out.
Yes, I've put it back to factory setting a few times, but it's no better.
The switching on/off isn't the main problem (though it has used 30% of the batter life in 8 hours during the night).
The main issue is the touchscreen simply activating itself. If i go into a menu of any kind, it sometimes selects something for me. It happens too often to just ignore it.
Sounds like a faulty screen :-( - let us know how you get on returning it! If mine turns out to be rubbish when it arrives my Plan B is this one http://mp4nation.net/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=68&products_id=496
well im having the random on issues (thanks for the airplane mode idea ill give it a tray) but the screen activations are not a problem.
@dwl99 that mp4nation link is the same as the kogan (a rebranded em73) so its likely to have the same niggles i think

A lot of these tablets are very similar (Herotab C8, Dropad A8) but there seem to be some important differences in the components used. I've been lurking in some Heropad C8 forums and nobody seems to have reported touchscreen problems.
This one look exactl;y the same , button layout etc etc however i know what you saying as even within the same model different components can be swapped in as costs change between runs
BTW

An app that sticks it in Airplane Mode when you put it into sleep mode is a good work around for now, try "Auto Airplane Mode" (I can't link because I haven't posted enough, it seems...
Hasn't randomly turned on since I installed this. Ahh, forget that, it seems to be doing it again, it just took a lot longer...
In general, this thing is a bit cheap and nasty, but I guess that's what I expected. The button placement is seriously weird, and the touchscreen and accelerometer are just inaccurate and jittery (try playing a game that uses the accelerometer! good luck!)
I feel like it could benefit a lot from a nice ROM though, to fix a few issues (where the hell is the accounts & sync menu?)

it was not where i expected and i think i had to do a round about method to find it.
i have a feeling it had something to do when i was trying to sync email contact with a email app but i forgot which one lol..

just FYI on the kogans you can activate aeroplane mode in settings then using the power controls widget on your home screen turn on wifi
it will keep the aeroplane mode on but wifi on as well atleast it worked on mine you dont need an app for it.
i actually wonder if the screen wake has something to do with background sync should try turn it off for a night and see.
Okay, so after being plugged in and fully charged, I unplugged it and left to drain overnight to see what would happen.
I had "Auto Airplane Mode" on, but as you'll understand, it helped, but not enough.
Even in Airplane Mode, the tablet would wake itself up, then "Auto Airplane Mode" would see the screen is on, and turn the wifi back on, then back off when the screen faded.
But, I'm thinking this might be because it has Sync enabled. I'm going to try it again with sync disabled.
The battery graph was a joke - it started smoothly going down at a reasonable pace, then -no lie- it spiked down.. then UP, then down, then up, throughout the night. It was at about 75% when I turned it back on after say, 8 hours. Then it dropped to 72%, then I plugged it in, and it immediately reported 98%. The biggest drain by a long way is "Mobile Standby".
However, for the most part, bar the bad accelerometer, terrible button placement, and slightly sharp edges, the hardware itself is not terrible for the money - 512MB RAM and 1GHz processor; I don't mind 800x480 at 7", it looks passable, although it's bad in sunlight. (Of course the viewing angles are bad, but for the cost, that's expected/OK).
But damn the software needs tweaking because it just has problems.

Hi all since installing auto airplane I don't think im seeing wakes issues. I left the kogan overnight at about 50% battery and this morning it was at 35%. Ill test again tonight just to be sure as you seem to have the same build and kernel .
EDIT:
Ok i do still have it

Though I have to agree the roms a joke accourding to quick system info 77% of my power useage has been down to mobile standby HUH.
Edit one thought is the 3g component in there for the 3g USB comparability and if so that was a new feature so could there be a rom that exists without it. I have added a topic in this forum asking if its possible to strip the 3g component out.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Huh, no, it still seems to turn the screen on now and then even with sync off and in airplane mode. This thing needs a custom ROM as soon as possible. I imagine after a while people will start to sell them cheap because of problems that could mostly be fixed with better software, so I think it could be a pretty popular tablet for people willing to customise it..

[Q] Multiple Issues with xt720

I am a new user of touchscreen and android phones, so I'm not sure if I'm just being picky with my issues, or if they can be fixed. But if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.
1. My phone will randomly mute mid-conversation. I then have to re-enter my password and get back to the phone "app" to un-mute it.
2. When I'm using the camera, if I leave it long enough for the phone to go into sleep mode I can't get it to turn back on. The touch buttons are still highlighted at the bottom of the phone, but the screen is black. I can hear the phone beeping like it is turning back on, but get nothing on the display. I then have to take out the battery, wait for 30-60 sec and then put it back in. Sometimes I have to do this repeatedly before it will start working again.
3. When I try to update the OS in Settings I keep getting the message that the phone cannot connect to the server. However, I have not other problems connecting to any other sites.
4. I added the facebook app and want to remove it now. I have gone into settings > applications and "uninstalled" it. However, the icon is still on my homepage and I can't seem to remove it. When I hold my finger on it a trash bin shows up below. But this only moves it to my apps page.
5. The phone is freezes pretty often. At least a couple times a day.
Ok, this is it for now. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate.
Thanks
I going to guess your still on 2.1 when was 2.1 stock the was way too touchy. The light goes out and you can't get to turn on unless battery pull this a issue found on 2.1 their a 2.2 update coming in late July. Update this on all this option will not work xt720 it not ota compatible so your settings area will not work . Be patient wait for Cincinnati bell update and if your not with them I intend to leak it.
Sent from my XT720 using XDA Premium App
As much as I'm liking my return to 2.1, it does indeed freeze up often, as I recall it did when I first got the phone. (the whole screen goes black, lights on bottom turn on thing)
Facebook app is a stock app and can't be removed unless your rooted.
Never had the mute issue.
The cannot connect to server thing I have had. But it's irrelevant as there shouldn't be any updates to get anyways.
Is updating the OS the best way to improve the performace of my phone? or should I still do the overclocking. If you advise to do the overclocking, should I wait untill I update the OS, or do it now?
There is no update to the OS, except for one that just overclocks from 550 to 720mhz. Chances are you already have that though. I do think that overclocking is a good idea if you want to increase the speed of your phone obviously. 1Ghz is nice and stable.
EDIT: Or do you mean update as in install one of the 2.2 ROMs from here?
I think Queenmantis's problem are related to the original Home app. try some Launcher apps such as Launcher Pro.
for now, my favorite is GoLauncher EX, with the latest update last week, that app totally rock. you guys should try.
I really love Dexter's 2.2, but the short battery life keeps bugging me so I've already went back to 2.1 since last week. I've got no modification except Milestone Overclock + App2Card 2.8.2. Eclair is still so sweet.
Hi I have bluesteel I have modified it some and would put up against any of 2.2 or 2.1 my numbers. Startup 65 memory and regular memory is 70 to 88 program memory and don't freeze and no lag.
Sent from my XT720 using XDA Premium App
Wait for CBW's update if you don't want to root.. If you're open to the idea of rooting your phone, then go ahead and update to Dexter's 2.2, save yourself the headache, then flash one of Khalpowers' ROMs, that should fix you up real good, there's always the option of going back to stock of you don't like the results, or go back to the "official 2.2" from CBW once it's available. But that's just me..

1. Maybe the Proximity sensor for auto turn-off has problems, when you are using the phone, the backlight turn-on and your face or your ear touch the surface and it mute.
2. Obviously this is a hardware problem, you should bring your phone to where you buy it to check.
3. I have the same problem, but I think this is not our phones' fault. Motorola seems not to support this phone anymore.
4. Facebook is considered to be a system app on this phone, you can not remove it. The app call facebook you installed on the phone, just the update of the original facebook app. Don't worry about that.
5. This maybe is relevant with the problem you have in the number 2 - a hardware problem.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Please forgive if there is something wrong above. I'm willing to listen and learn.
thank you

I think most important part of App2Card is partitioning of SD card. I had tried the partitioning tool in App2Card but it never fail to fail . So I partitioned my card as below and I use "Parted" software inside Ubuntu. My SD card is Sandisk 8GB SDHC Class6 card.
1st Partition - FAT32 (7.2 GB)
2nd Partition - EXT3 (512 Mb)
3rd Partition - SWAP (256 Mb)
Create one partition at a time. Don't create everything in one batch.
Then, the card should be ready to use.
now come with the App2Card. Open the app, make sure u grant root access and all, make sure the app detect the card. then close it again. (that might be the trick). And open it again. Just do open and close till the "What's New" pop-up never show up. It might be two or three times. Then click "Install EXT/Transfer apps to EXT" button.
it will install, make the phone reboot and configure.
after the phone is rebooted, open the App2Card to make sure it show no error message. If there's any error message, just try to reboot the phone. It will surely work.

HTC Sensation General FAQ's. New to this device? Read here! UPDATED 8/3/11

**Added a few new things now that we have S-off. Check them out below.**
This thread was created simply for Noobs. Yes, if you don't know how to boot into the bootloader..than you should be reading this. We were all Noobs once. You can always check this more than once since i will be updating it with more issues and solutions fellow members post that i might have forgot to add.
If you dont have this recovery flashed already here is a Link to a WORKING CHARGING WHILE OFF RECOVERY PLEASE FLASH IT JUST TO BE SURE YOUR SAFE here. Will get removed when Rom Manager gives you the right recovery and not a broken one.
My Phone Died and i can't turn it back on!!! help!!
1. Download the recovery i have posted above. Once downloaded rename to remove the name of the recovery until its just named recovery.img.
2. Plug your device to a computer and run the command
adb reboot
or
adb reboot bootloader
if your device doesn't turn on, then simply pull the battery, put it back in, then redo the steps.
3. Once your phone does power on from one of those commands, reboot into android OS and put the recovery on the root of your sdcard.
4.Boot into bootloader while plugged into the computer and run the following command
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Then the problem is fixed! I'm very sorry for the inconvenience, but thats the fix.
7/28/11 We now have s-off.
follow this guide here for a better in depth on how to do it. : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
How do i flash a ROM on my sensation?
1.place the rom on the ROOT of your sdcard.
2.boot into recovery using either the app rom manager and choosing boot to recovery, MORE THAN LIKELY your custom rom will have the advanced power menu so you can just hold the power key, go to restart, then choose recovery, or powering off and booting holding power+vol down, then scroll down to recovery, press power key.
3. WIPE your DATA/CACHE partitions, then scroll down to advanced and wipe your dalvik cache.
4. go to install zip from your SDCARD
5. Choose zip from sdcard.
6. Find the rom, press power button, and install it.
7. Reboot and enjoy!
Will i lose all my texts, apps, etc when i install a new rom?
Yes you will. You could make a titanium backup of everything though and restore it when your done flashing the roms so you can get everything back. Download titanium from the market.
What is the difference between a Nandroid Backup and using Titanium backup??
Well When you make a nandroid backup, your backing up the ENTIRE rom, not just things you want to restore onto your new rom. in other words, with a nandroid, if you want to go back to your previous rom if you don't like the new one, use a nandroid backup.
Nandroid sounds interesting and is something i would like to do!! How do i do it?!
You boot into recovery, go down to where it says backup and restore, and choose backup, name it, then go ahead and back it up. Thats obviously where you want to restore it as well. You *ALSO* can choose the app ROM Manager and do it from there.
My battery Life SUCKS after i flashed this New ROM!! IS MY BATTERY MESSED UP??
Nah its not don't worry about it. Your battery life usually is going to suck because your battery stats got wiped from android, and it has to recreate it. So let the battery die once probably, fully charge it, then let it die again. then Charge it then you should be ok. Give it a day or two you should see a change. If not, let the developer of the ROM know NICELY in his thread. If you see that someone already posted about the battery life, no need for you to post it as well.
How do i flash a kernel??
You flash it exactly how you do a ROM. No need to wipe anything just flash it and reboot.
How do i flash a RADIO?
That depends. if its in a format and the name starts with a P then has a bunch of different numbers after, then you do the following:
1. Place on the root of your sdcard.
2. Reboot into the bootloader.
3. Then it will find it, and ask you if you want to update.
4. Let it do the update. It will only replace the radio.
5. Reboot into recovery and wipe DALVIK cache.
6. Reboot and enjoy.
ALWAYS make sure you read the Original post of the person who is providing the radio to make sure he ripped everything out and its ready to flash.
My Phone is S-OFF and it fully died and now it won't turn back on and it doesn't look like its charging while its off WTF AM I BRICK?!?!
No its not. From what i learned its in "offline" charging mode since the battery is so low, and even though the light isn't showing, its still charging. To turn back on:
1. Either wait a few mins and let it charge for a little, then pull battery, put it back in and try to turn on.
2. Plug into computer, let it sit for a second, then use this command from terminal:
adb reboot
It will turn it on for you. i honestly don't know WHY its like this, but thats just how it is for right now. i personally had to use the second option. If i learn more about this, ill update you guys.
Does this Recovery update?! If so, how do i UPDATE IT?!
Since S-off and recovery JUST became available to us, its prolly not updated right now. But for future reference just download the App ROM Manager from the market. Once loaded, if there is ever an update or something for it, it will be in that app. then you can choose it from there and it will update it for you.
I hold the volume down+the power button but it doesn't boot into it!!!! help!!!
Pull the battery out before you do it. OR to make things ALOT easier, before turning your sensation off go into settings, power, and uncheck the Fastboot option. Now when you turn the device off, it will fully power down instead of just going into a "sleep" mode. Now do it.
My wifi is terrible! When i turn it sideways, i lose ALL MY BARS!! WTF?!?!
'Try moving your hand, you might be detuning the WiFi antenna'. If you know that the WiFi antenna is adjacent to the camera lens, you're more likely to be aware when you're covering it. But Your not alone either. i actually have this same problem as well. Yes i know it sucks. There are only three things you could do here though honestly since We haven't really brought it down to a conclusion of is it our hardware that's causing it or is it the software.
1.You could boot into bootloader and data wipe your sensation to see if it fixes it. BE WARNED IT WILL WIPE YOUR DEVICE, MEANING EVERYTHING WILL GET DELETED OFF IT! APPS, MESSAGES ETC.
2.If that doesn't fix it, go into Settings-Wifi & Networks-Wifi Settings. Once your in there press the menu button and go to the advanced option in the pop-up menu. Once in there choose Best Wifi Performance.
3. If that doesn't work, then you need to get a warranty replacement. we know it sucks, we promise.
My touchscreen stops being responsive! Whats going on!?
It seems to be happening to everyone after about a week of use, me as well. We think maybe an ota will fix it. But to do a quick fix of it just turn the screen off for a few seconds then turn it back on. it usually fixes it whenever it stops working.
My Data connection is horrible and extremely slow. Why?!
This also seems to have happened to everyone. To try to fix, call t-mobile and see if they have your phone in their database, and make sure on their database it has that you have a sensation and they have the right data package going for you. Also make sure your Sim card isn't old, which t-mobile can also fix for you. I Can personally say talking with t-mobile helps. i used to have poor connection. now i can use wifi hotspot for my laptop while being on the phone talking with someone still with full 4G bars.
You could also try this fix ( Thanks Mysterioustko):
-Go into the dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#*
-Select Phone Info
-Go to the "toggle cyphering" button and disable it
-For good measure turn off radio and then turn it back on
-Then reenable the "toggle cyphering" button
Just got my new sensation but its really hot!!! Is it defective?!
No it's not defective, its just hot. These batteries can heat up from time to time, ESPECIALLY on your first few charges, but it won't happen much anymore after. My battery was extremely hot from just charging it for the first time with the phone turned off, so i'm speaking from experience and from other users as well.
The voicemail notification won't leave the status bar even when i don't have a voicemail!!
Simple fix: Settings-Call-Clear Voicemail Notification.
Any more questions? Please Ask here. Ill try to answer them and add them to this post. Hope this helps people. Let's not keep asking the same questions over, and over, and over.. and over again.
you should add in some of the other known issues too, such as no sound issue & the voicemail icon clear, & try to get this as a sticky.

That Makes sense. Just i never came across that voicemail or no sound issue. Direct me to a link real quick so i can add them so i can see the problem and post the solution? Thanks alot for the input i appreciate it. ill keep looking for more Problems and what not. And i already asked a MOD to sticky it. I just doubt they'd Sticky it in the General AND Developement section, since i posted it there as well for the people who miss it here somehow (or just never come to this section of our forums) and vice versa.
I've read about people having touchscreen issues, where parts of the screen become randomly unresponsive. I have also noticed this on mine. Is the presiding school of thought that this can be fixed with their update?
I also have intermittent data stalls that require a cycle in and out of airplane mode to fix. Tmo has advised me that htc is going to fix this in their update and they are aware of it.

Thanks for this. Couldn't hit the thanks button for this post. Apparently ive thanked too many people for one day
Added the Touchscreen issues and the data stalls. Let me know if i didn't put it in there right. And yeah i do think an OTA will fix it. Lets just hope for the best. I highly doubt its a hardware issue since everyone seems to be getting it after using the device for about a week.

I'll get around to that soon
For the voicemail icon bug, I just called my phone and left myself a message and removed it. Worked well..
Temp stickied here as well. Please note that if/when we do a rollup that this may be un-stuck and added to the rollup thread.

Thanks. Op updated.
Not sure if this is the right place to ask this type of question but I didn't want to start another thread for something so simple.
Sometimes after I send a text message, the large word I typed magically reappears in the textbox. It happens randomly and I don't know how to reproduce it.
Hey
...wow... these forums are MASSIVE and I can't search noting? whats up with that?
Anyway that's off topic, so can I update the Hboot to 1.18, is the newly ship t-mobile phones at 1.18.
Issue #1: Downloaded Apps that was save on the SD card and showed on the homescreen, icons wont show or becomes like of the andriod market icon after a reboot.
Solution: Go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Choose "All" tab> and look for the HTC Sense loader app. Tap it and choose "force stop" then press the home button. your homescreen will reload and the apps icons will now show.
Issue #2: HTC Sensation's default video player, sound goes away after 50-70secs of playing time.
Solution: i downloaded a different player since im getting pissed off with the default player and i cant seem to find a fix for it. i really hope this would get fixed with featured updates.
^Issue #1 worked great...cool! But, not sure how often it will need to be done....
well for me, everytime my device restarts, i do this.
Two main issues I've noted thus far, one minor, one moderate:
1. Sense performance seems choppy/sluggish when swiping from one screen to another. I believe this part of Sense is called "Rosie" but not sure. Sense performance is *definitely* slower than the EVO 3D which is weird because both phones have nearly identical hardware. Software glitch?
2. Battery use is *much* higher than I expected even after having a couple of weeks for the battery to settle in. I'm getting 150ma to 250ma usage when phone is just sitting there, screen off, not doing anything special. Yes, I have it set to push mail from Exchange, sync weather once per hour, sync with HTCSense.com, stocks, GMail, and Facebook. My HD2 did all this with about 20ma-40ma usage so can't understand why the Sensation sucks up so much more juice doing the same work. Turning on the screen and GPS (I use Google Nav) puts me in the 600+ma usage range. I currently can't get through even a half day of decent usage without draining the battery flat.
Item #1 is probably a software glitch because I've heard others complain about it. I'm hoping an OTA fix is on the way that will also unlock the bootloader.
Item #2 is more worrisome. I can't understand why the phone is using so much more power than my old HD2 (running Coredroid 1.6). 4G coverage near me is not all that good. I have a funny feeling the 4G radio is really sucking down the juice. Is there a way to force it back to 3G mode? I don't need 4G speed all the time and would prefer the better battery life.

I was also wondering this too. I just got a Sensation yesterday and am wondering how to turn off the 4G to save juice when I don't need it
The WIFI sucks so much!!!! ugh.... i hate it!! if i change a new battery cover, is it gonna turn into normal? i just got my Sensation like an Hr ago...
Final Root Method
Where will this be posted once achieved? I'm dying for it! Thanks.
