[Q] Downloading *Not installing* APK Directly to SD - General Questions and Answers

I have an HTC Desire (CellSouth/Cspire bravoc) and only have 20 MB of internal space with ton of SD space left. Well, I want to install a game that is 32 MB. When the program installs directly to SD, it'll only take up 4 MB internally. But, if I don't have the 32 on the internal, it won't even download. I had this problem in the past with Paradise Island. Here are the tedious steps I've been performing to even update PI which is 25 MB.
1. I have 20 MB left, so I use Titanium Backup to backup/delete apps to free up at least 6 MB for a total of 26 MB free.
2. Download Paradise Island's update. It installs directly to SD card, so when the install is complete, I'll still have 26 MB space left.
3. Reinstall the backed-up apps.
This process is cumbersome, so I was wondering if there was a way to download the APK directly to the SD card for install. I'm NOT looking to "move" the app to SD after the app has been downloaded and installed so no one-liner suggestions for App2SD or using ADB setInstallLocation 2.
If this is possible, can you give me the exact steps? If it is not possible, is there a way to get the APK directly from the Android Market, then onto SD card so I can use File Expert to install? For all intents and purposes, I am S-OFF and am temp-rooted using Visionary+ on Froyo.
Thanks!

Downloading big files

Hello Guys.
Maybe someone of you can give me a helpful hint.
I´m running a Magician device, but i think it´s not important which device is used. With the device I´m using a sandisk Wifi card with 256 MB Storage integrated.
The last days i tried to download a file with approx. 30 MB. SD-Card with Wifi was complete clean, but the Memory of the device just have about 24 MB free. For downloading I used the integrated IE in the WM2003SE. The download should be saved on the storage card, but the download failed because of not having enough free space. So I think the device first downloads the file as temporay file on the System memory and then copies it ro the SD card.
So, how can I change this to be able to download files directly to the SD card?
Stefan

This is the question that some guy asked back in 2006. bun none answered. I have the same problem this days with my HD2 on win 6.5 with 8GB SD card, but only 46MB free integrated memory. I was try to download 80MB file from internet, but it was impossible because both opera and IE making temp file in main memory, and after successful download it was been removed to SD card and cleared from main memory. How to avoid making that temp file and allow download some file bigger then the free main memory? Can anyone help?

Link2SD Problem

Okay, so I have an HTC Explorer, which I rooted recently (Factory reset BEFORE rooting, so that everything is clean). Installed Link2SD on it with an external FAT32 second partition of 512 MB. Then I proceeded to install all my backed-up apps.
Now, the problem I am having, is that Link2SD would create links to all the existing apps(As well as Auto-Link is turned on) but The apps are still taking up space in Internal memory.
For example, say, I have 50 MB of free space and I install Titanium Backup, which is 5 MB, and then Link2SD will link it automatically, but I will still have 45 MB of space left in the internal memory :-/
Help please? I am using Stock HTC Explorer ROM.

I am also having this problem ... Have just tested with Zombiebooth App ...
The app is 30mb was on the SD card (APP2SD standard), moved back to internal it took up 30mb, and then LINK2SD it over to the EXT4 partiton on my sdcard .. it shows the memory space is still using 26mb internal .. WTF .. why is the app still using 26mb ? surely LINK2SD should move all 30mb over and just create a small link on the internal memory ??
EDIT: Just read FAQ's of LINK2SD ... some internal files of an app are still left behind on internal memory in the \data\data folder ...
Wonder if it is still possible to move/link these remaining files over too ? There must be a reason why they're left behind
you guys should try cronmod D2EXT+, here. It's work like a charm on my Galaxy Ace, before i had 180 Mb n after i used it my internal memory become 2 Gb. try it n you'll be amazed...
Or you can just use int2ext+ now. but thanks for the advice.

Downloading an app to sd instead of internal memory before installation

The question is pretty straightforward. Whenever you download an app from the market, it gets downloaded on to the internal memory 1st & then gets installed. If I've set the setInstallLocation to 2 via adb, it gets installed to sd. The problem here is that even though the app is installed directly to sd, its initially downloaded onto internal memory. My internal memory is low & doesn't allow me to download huge apps. I had to install games like Nova by downloading apks from the net using Opera browser & then install it. I can't do this for Market apps however. So, how do I make an app to download as well as install on sd?

[Q] Cannot install game due to lack of memory.

I have an LG Optimus F3 (Virgin Mobile) and it has a 4GB internal memory. Of that, only 1.23 GB is free for installing apps and roms. The game I want to download and run is Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour which is almost 2GB.
1.) I have my device rooted
2.) I have Link2SD installed
3.) I have a 32GB MicroSD card installed. 21GB is parititioned in FAT32, while the remaining space left is in EXT2.
4.) The install location in Link2SD is set to External
I am still getting "Insufficent space" errors whenever I try to download this game from the marketplace. I thought Link2SD was supposed to fix this. I know I am doing something wrong, but I cannot figure it out. Please help. I am at my wits end.

I suggest that you uninstall apps that you don't need/use and/or remove bloatwares.
Since you're rooted, I Recommend to integrate the updates of your system apps to your Rom.
You're baffled. Android phone has four parts of where the data goes. System Rom, Internal, Internal Sdcard(SDcard0), External Sdcard(SDcard1).
The 2GB game you want to download is going to use your configured Sdcard0 and your internal memory which needs to have 2GB Free of memory or more in total. As far as I see your Internal Sdcard is set as your Sdcard0 whilst your Micro Sdcard is set as your Sdcard1. In that case Link2SD Won't help you, since apps use Sdcard0 to store it's data NOT Sdcard1. Meaning Link2Sd will just move the data of your Game to your internal sdcard(Sdcard0). To solve this you need to SWAP your Internal Sdcard and Micro Sdcard. Means from "Internal SdCard(SdCard0) : Micro SdCard(SdCard1) TO Internal SdCard(SdCard1) : Micro SdCard(SdCard1)".So Link2SD can move the data of the Game you want to download to your Micro Sdcard(Sdcard0) via Edting vold.fstab at System/etc/vold.fstab.
