[Q] Tethering with USB add-on - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to usb tether a droid phone to the usb kit/dongle add-on that recently came out for the Transformer?

Wow!
I actually logged on to this thread with the same basic question in mind. I have a SGS 4G and would like to be able to USB tether it through the dock.

Maybe read the 3G dongle stuff and fiddle around? If you setup your phone as tether does the kernel see the device?

I haven't purchased the usb dongle yet so I wanted to see if anyone had any luck. Would be interested to know if anyone has any luck usb tethering through the keyboard dock.

Answered my own question: IT DOES NOT. I borrowed the keyboard dock from a friend and attempted to USB tether with the phone's built-in app plus other apps including pda net. It does not work. They all say you have to have Windows, Linux or Mac OS on your computer.

Having Linux (kernel) on our TF's I would assume that it's a driver issue that could be solved with an Loadable Kernel Module (LKM) or built into a custom kernel. I wouldn't expect whatever that is though, to be an integeral part of the stock kernel, nor necessarily however the docking port mates to USB at it's level.
I wonder how that works in relation to standard USB drivers.

How does that process work? I have very general knowledge relating to Linux, but I wouldn't even know where to start trying to isolate the driver and trying to make it available for android to use. Know of any guides or starting points that would help me do it?

[Q] Mini usb to usb?

sorry if this has been posted before but is it possible in anyway to connect a usb flash drive to my desire using an adaptor or something :? saying that is there an app available to browse and external USB
No. It is impossible.
possible, yes...worth the hassle, nope.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=702742
my frined has a galaxy 2 and he has a cable for it, we tired a lot of things, but nothing works.
its a shame really
xoom usb host works pretty well - keyboards, mice, ps3 controller - out the box too
but for the desire - everything was picked up as an in-car device (without flashing new kernels)
I saw somebody last week connecting a usb flash drive to on his mobile but I didn´t had the time to see and ask which phone it was.
Have been thinking about it ever since. Would be so handy to push your date to a flash drive on the go.
I been to the same bar in the hope I would see that person again but I haven´t saw him again. I´m afraid it was a tourist.

It looks a big hassle indeed if you have to switch kernels to get to slave mode again.
it's nokia i believe

3G Usb modem on the Xoom?

Hello
I know this has been asked before, but no conclusion was presented.
I have an Huawei E173 3G usb modem i primarily use for my car stereo(Parrot Asteroid, this runs Android 1.5/1.6 this has support for a lot of usb dongles)
I want to to use this with my Wifi Xoom via an usb OTG cable.
As of now i doesn't work.
This because the lack of drivers and APN settings on the Xoom.
I have read the thread over at the XDA acer iconica tab forum about this, and they got it to work. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14603952 )
The android drivers for a lot of usb dongles exist, but how to get them to work on the xoom?
Tiamat kernel has the needed modules (usb_wwan.ko), so, you need just the script to set up connection. You can try with this one, maybe you need to change something...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058846
I dont have, the otg cable, but as soon as i can get one i'm trying to get this work...
I'll check it out.
For the moment i don't have an OTG cable either. Waiting for a new one from ebay.

Hi, I have got a Tiamat 2.1 rom, and I have a uk wifi only version XOOM. However, I can not find any setting about APN. How can I make a 3G USB model work on my wifi only XOOM?
Thank you
I'm totally curious too. I have a WIFI XOOM and I just got a nice USB HSPA+ stick from Videotron and I wanna see if I can get it to work via OTG - I checked OS Monitor (Tiamat ROM) and it seems the stick is detected, with a dead IP 169.254 etc...
so I just need a dialer! Any news at all?
Thanks in advance!
any solution yet?i have tried everything possible, bricked my device couple of time, its teasing me :'(
I also wanna to try. But two problems here:
(1)"/etc/ppp/peers" is Read Only file system, so it is impossible to put dialing scripts there.
(2)I don't have proper drivers.
Can anyone help?
About the question (1) above, I've got done with it from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1341585.
Any solution with dialers yet? Really need this to work

[Q]Internet via iPhone cable?

Hi all,
I know that Asus Transformer can work with iPhone (file sharing and etc.) via its USB cable...
Though, is it possible to connect the Asus TF to the internet via iPhone USB cable & Hotspot feature?
Thanks in advance.
If your service provider allows it, you can use the personal hotspot feature on the iphone to share the connection over bluetooth
No cable required
Re:
Hi Mr. Carlvk,
I know this feature already.
I know that iPhone can provide Internet even through the device's WiFi abilities...
But I'm wondering about a way to provide network communication via the iPhone cable - which take less battery from both devices.
Best regards,
it is possible http://giagio.com/wiki/moin.cgi/iPhoneEthernetDriver on my gentoo linux it work fine with my iphone3gs .. its possible to compile this for android too

Thans sir.
Now would have to learn how to compile source code to Android...
I'm not so familliar with compiling methods yet.
Thanks though!!
I was wondering about this a while back and worked out that the TF charges the phone anyway so no battery savings are made on the TF.
I had a look around and picked up a second hand galaxy android phone (cheaP)and use that when I need more data/battery. I generaly have several bits of kit around with me anyway so one more is no biggie.
I'm sure you have also come to the conclusion that most tethering software is for connecting android mobiles to windows/PC.
I was unable to find a solution may your search be more fruitful.

USB Tethering

It doesn't natively work on the Infinity, but I'm stubborn. If anyone can give me some direction as to how best to tackle this, it would be helpful. Maybe someone else had already started on something similar, or if not, at least a starting point.
Mind you, I'm trying to tether FROM my Sprint phone TO my tablet.

Have you tried connecting your Sprint phone via bluetooth? I noticed that when I paired mine, it showed up as a possible tether point but I don't have data on my plan so couldn't test it.
I also think this thread needs to be moved to the Q&A forum.
I doubt you'll get it working through USB. I dont think the Infinity has drivers for that.
There's tons of solutions to get it going over wifi, and if you want something a little more power efficient try a combination of PDANet for Tablets on the Infinity and FoxFi on your phone to tether over bluetooth.
Sigh... the entire point to this thread being in the Development forum is to develop the drivers needed to make it work.

Unfortunately, unless you have already developed such app, this post does not belong in the development forums, which are for apps/ROMs that have already been developed, not for posts about apps/ROMs that you would like to have developed.

Already posted in Q&A. Pretty much the sames answers you received there. Dude, just wifi/BT tether... No one is gonna hack the wireless network on your phone to get free 4G internet.
Obviously I need to go elsewhere, then. I thought this would be good place to go for aid with app development, and instead all I get is 'you're dumb, do it this way' and 'Development is for apps already developed, not for those in development' as seems to be the case. Thanks anyway, I suppose.
Not trying to give you a hard time and certainly didn't mean to insinuate you're dumb. You're just asking for something that doesn't really NEED to be done and really can't be done (at the moment). There are already lots of good solutions for what you're ultimately looking to do, tether your phone to your tablet to access the net. Being stubborn about doing it via USB just doesn't make sense (unless you're not really being honest about wanting simple internet access and you need USB tether for other reasons). Who would want wires when you can do it wirelessly? Wires suck... lol.
Hopefully you'll stick around and enjoy the community. Lots of smart nice people here ready to lend a hand.
Grave digging
I've found a need for this or at least a work around. I work offshore and internet is restricted to 1 device per person. My tablet cannot tether back to my PC but my mobile can. I can usb tether my phone to my PC while on wifi. However you cannot bluetooth tether while on wifi so my tablet becomes useless. Please if you're thinking I should just bluetooth or wifi tether using my data I will ask you to log off life and KYS because as I said earlier I work offshore there is no data. Is there a way to bluetooth tether while on wifi??

It does have the drivers for it, but it requires a change in the framework to allow it to use the USB device when you plug it in. I have this enabled in cm.

SL101 Root/ PC USB connection problem

Greetings all.
First off, I have used this forum extensively for work on my droid razr and love the work you all do. Thanks for all the passive advice I have received. I have been trying to root my asus slider SL101 for some time now and have been hung up on the fact that I cannot connect my tablet to my PC. I am running windows 7 on an HP laptop and have tried the following to connect the slider to it. I am running ICS 4.0.3 with build 9.2.1.27 on my tablet. When I plug my usb charger/cord into the laptop from the charger port on the tablet, I get an error message from windows saying the device is unrecognized and has malfunctioned.
1. installed the asus sync desktop software x 3
2. Manually downloaded the usb driver for my tablet from their website and installed
3. Performed a factory reset on the tablet
4. Performed a complete system wipe ( by going into boot menu and pressing volume down, then up up. etc...)
5. Called the Asus support hotline and discussed prior interventions with no success. They recommended if another full system wipe from boot menu didn't help then they would have to have it sent in to look at it.
None of these have solved the problem, so my question is (1) if anybody knows a possible solution that I haven't tried? I have found similar problems on the forums with no success with updating windows media player, installing asus sync, etc... ( as I don't want to send it off for a month minimum because I need this tablet for school), and (2) Is there a way to root the slider without a pc? I have flash drives and online sync for transferring files, I really only need the pc for root. Any help that anybody can give me is GREATLY appreciated. I think I have exhausted all the forums I can find on the SL101 (which is actually quite limited). Thanks in advance!
I rooted my SL101 running Honeycomb and I had no trouble with drivers on Windows 7.
However, I do remember someone saying that PC connection and driver issues might be easier on Ubuntu.
I seem to remember I had trouble with my USB drivers too on my slider. I suggest you google for ADB drivers. I did a quick google and found this, hopefully it works for you.

You may think you'll not need your PC, but if you brick your slider you'll be glad you have PC connectivity, I just came out of a b!t# of a brick with some assistance from really smart (and helpful) people on various forums but I couldn't have done it without ADB.

Hey volan1,
Would you mind telling us how you bricked your Slider and also the steps you took to unbrick it?
The Slider owners are so few in number and with the lack of NvFlash for our device, it really makes it hard to find help and resources to use.
I tried the Ubuntu route with no success yet, thanks for the suggestion though! I am going to try the adb drivers suggested and let you know how it goes! Thanks for all your help guys! And I agree, the SL101 group is very small! Any targeted forums or sites for ROMs or help that you know of would be a great help!

Well, I tried all the driver tricks and ubuntu and about everything else I can find to try to get my Sl101 to connect to my laptop... I called ASUS again with (surprise surprise) no help. I can use the usb sync/charge cable to charge the tablet from the wall, but no usb at all. So, I guess I will be sending it in to ASUS to be looked at. Thanks for all of your suggestions all!

Thanks! But, you aren't going to believe this (because I really don't), but I had the tablet and original box all together and ready to ship out this afternoon to ASUS when I ran across a factory charger and usb cable at Office Depot. I decided "what the hell" may as well try a different cable, since it is literally the only thing I haven't changed or replaced trying to get this to work.... and it worked... I purchased the exact same Asus brand cable that I already have from original purchase and still works in all other applications, but for some reason this new cable works for usb interface with my computer where the other did not.... omg so much time/effort wasted!! I'm still having trouble with asus sync, but it is no worry as my laptop recognizes the tablet and I can browse files, etc... Thanks for all the help!
P.S. Anybody know of a good SL101 rom forum? Theres some transformer forums and here, just curious to see where everyone goes for this device Also, what's your favorite ROM with cornerstone?

Well, I'd say XDA is still the best place to go for ROMs and support. At least for ICS ROMs, there's the keyboard compatibility pack for us to use with the TF101 ROMs.

I would agree. XDA is the "bible" of information the vast majority of the time. However, I have found pockets of devs on some niche websites. I am going to work on a compatibility pack for the newer JB roms and SL101 from TF101 builds.
