It doesn't natively work on the Infinity, but I'm stubborn. If anyone can give me some direction as to how best to tackle this, it would be helpful. Maybe someone else had already started on something similar, or if not, at least a starting point.

Have you tried connecting your Sprint phone via bluetooth? I noticed that when I paired mine, it showed up as a possible tether point but I don't have data on my plan so couldn't test it.
I also think this thread needs to be moved to the Q&A forum.
I doubt you'll get it working through USB. I dont think the Infinity has drivers for that.
There's tons of solutions to get it going over wifi, and if you want something a little more power efficient try a combination of PDANet for Tablets on the Infinity and FoxFi on your phone to tether over bluetooth.
Sigh... the entire point to this thread being in the Development forum is to develop the drivers needed to make it work.

Unfortunately, unless you have already developed such app, this post does not belong in the development forums, which are for apps/ROMs that have already been developed, not for posts about apps/ROMs that you would like to have developed.

Already posted in Q&A. Pretty much the sames answers you received there. Dude, just wifi/BT tether... No one is gonna hack the wireless network on your phone to get free 4G internet.
Obviously I need to go elsewhere, then. I thought this would be good place to go for aid with app development, and instead all I get is 'you're dumb, do it this way' and 'Development is for apps already developed, not for those in development' as seems to be the case. Thanks anyway, I suppose.
Not trying to give you a hard time and certainly didn't mean to insinuate you're dumb. You're just asking for something that doesn't really NEED to be done and really can't be done (at the moment). There are already lots of good solutions for what you're ultimately looking to do, tether your phone to your tablet to access the net. Being stubborn about doing it via USB just doesn't make sense (unless you're not really being honest about wanting simple internet access and you need USB tether for other reasons). Who would want wires when you can do it wirelessly? Wires suck... lol.
Hopefully you'll stick around and enjoy the community. Lots of smart nice people here ready to lend a hand.

I've found a need for this or at least a work around. I work offshore and internet is restricted to 1 device per person. My tablet cannot tether back to my PC but my mobile can. I can usb tether my phone to my PC while on wifi. However you cannot bluetooth tether while on wifi so my tablet becomes useless. Please if you're thinking I should just bluetooth or wifi tether using my data I will ask you to log off life and KYS because as I said earlier I work offshore there is no data. Is there a way to bluetooth tether while on wifi??

It does have the drivers for it, but it requires a change in the framework to allow it to use the USB device when you plug it in. I have this enabled in cm.

I'm searching for a way to Wi-Fi tether without being rooted & bootloader unlocked. This is one of the primary use cases for my phones, and I've been able to do it for years on Windows Mobile without any additional modifications. I'm pondering a move to the Nexus One but I'm still a bit wary of rooting/bootloader unlocking since it is irreversible. Is there a solution for people like me?
(It must be Wi-Fi tethering, Bluetooth and USB are nice but won't cut it. I have a handful of devices I need to connect such as a Nintendo DSi, iPod Touch, and various laptops).
If you want wifi tether, you have to root.
I don't understand why everyone is so apprehensive to root their phone. It's a painless process. You could go from stock to wifi tether in probably less than 10 min if you read all the steps ahead of time and have everything downloaded and ready to go.
Unfortunately some of us are still apprehensive on the voiding of warranty, especially when we are not based in the US. Once rooted and the phone is on its own, subject to the harsh elements of an unloving world...
Perhaps once the 1 year warranty is over, I will root mine.

It's the warranty I'm worried about. It seems the general feeling is that HTC will still fix problems clearly not caused by rooting/bootloader unlocking, but it's not 100% official.

That was on topic... I don't believe there's currently any way to wifi tether unless you have root.
That said, since you want to get your DS on, etc... what if you usb or bluetooth tether to a laptop then use the laptop as the wifi access point? It would be less than ideal, but it would get the job done.
True, that's definitely an option, but unfortunately my Intel 4965 wireless card in my laptop doesn't work with the elegant Connectify sollution for Windows 7, so that's not really an option either I suppose I will have to just bite the bullet and root, or stick with Windows Mobile.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I isn't there a difference between Wireless tether for root users and Wi-Fi tethering. I understand there are work arounds, but I can not turn on Wireless tether for root users and connect my PS3 directly. It is not like your phone is turned into a Wi-Fi hot spot. It is an ad-hoc connection. Will the OP's DSi be able to connect to an ad-hoc connection?
Yes, it is an ad-hoc connection you're right, but nonetheless, it can allow multiple clients simultaneously like a router which is what I need. I'm actually not sure about the DS, but devices like the iPod touch and other smartphones can connect just fine.
Well if that's the case, I would just root it. Everything works GREAT! There are somany great applications that become available once you root it. I wouldn't worry about the warranty issue. I rooted my G1 and did all kinds of things with it. If anything ever went wrong it was always an easy fix. These phone are great and the developers behind all the custom ROM's are even better.

OK, Since Root is out I just rooted my phone and installed the Wifi Tether app (avaiable in the market) and it works like a charm.
Have a friend with an iPhone and she was able to connect right up and get online.
Gotta' love root..

I am a recent cover from blackberry to android. One thing I am interested in is rooting. It seems like it us a must to get everything out of the phone... However it also seems much more complicated than loading a beta os on a bb. Can you point me to a good, step by step instruction site on rooting my X. I'm not a "geek" or anything close. I just want to get everything I can out of these devices. Also, does the app you mention work with all macs? I noticed a lot of apps only work with pcs.

WiFi tether is of course OS agnostic. It sets your phone up as an access point.
Other apps are USB or possibly Bluetooth tethering, and that might require a client side app.

I've looked at the sites explaining the rooting process and I think I get it. The crackberry community was great about providing support to people who wanted to do more. So far the android community seems on part with that, just need a rooting and android/linux for dummies site. Its a lot more technical than the bb os.

The "hardest" part of this will be setting up the Android SDK and making sure adb works properly.
This is my sort-of first Android phone (I had the Droid 1 on launch day, but took it back), so much of this is new to me too. I do have some minor linux experience, which helps, but I just followed the video link I posted step for step and had no problems.
The problem is, I don't know what android sdk or adb mean. That's why i'm not rushing into rooting. I am scared to brick this device. I love it (except for 8 hour charge on battery. But coming from a bb I should expect not to get the same two days) and am afraid of making a mistake due to lack of knowledge.

Here is a few things to keep in mind..
The Verizon 3G app is infrastructure, thus it works with things like PSP and Nintendo DS, which is why i keep it. The Wireless tether apps are only ad-hoc for now.
From what ive been told, the verizon app loads a different firmware in the wi chip before running.
this is why i ONLY use the hot app for PSP and DS and the rest wi-t for root

You are wise to want to read all you can before jumping in.
Android SDK is the 'Software Development Kit'. It's the tools/drivers from Google that allow direct interaction with your android phone. While ostensibly intended for developers, it is the tool you will need.
ADB = Android Debug Bridge. It's a tool that comes with the SDK. It's a command line shell that allows you to push/pull files directly to the phone as well as open a shell (android is just a mini/modified version of linux - hence needing to get 'root' to be able to modify system related files).

This is another thing that can be done with the SDK, so the important part of this tutorial is getting the SDK installed.

no dice, trust me on that.. they can do ad-hoc if they are doing multiplayer gaming with other ds or psp units but not to go online

If you want to pay VZW, then the app is already on there. If you want to cheat, you will need to Root.
I downloaded the droidxrootv2 zip file to my pc. The videos mention ADB what is this, and where do i get the drivers for it? Also is the wifi tether app named as such or is it called something else on marketplace? Thanks.
So here is the deal. I have seen the videos of people using the different tablets as phones. Here is what I want to know. Just how useful is this. What I would like to do is this. I would like to buy a wifi hotspot device like the one from sprint.
And then get a tablet that only has wifi support. I would like to use Google voice now that it supports people being able to call the desktop. So my question is can I get a tablet wifi only and setup it to connect to the hotspot and maybe even a bluetooth headset so I don't look to nerdy.
Anyways can you guys point me in the right direction to get this done?

I would like to find a tablet that does not have wireless capabilities built in. This would include 3G (or any cell service), WIFI, Bluetooth, or even Infra-Red!
I work in an area where devices with ANY wireless capability built in are not allowed. It is not enough to simply turn them off.

I don't think there is such a device. And if there is, it's probably a very old tablet that was made before any of these technologies were created for tablets.
The market for wireless-less tablets is so small that it's very unlikely that anyone will make them. Removing WiFi and bluetooth for a handful of people is just too expensive.

Most tablets have an Airplane Mode which will disable all wireless functionality.
Or you could root it and remove the drivers..

I think you'll be hard pressed to find anything main-stream that doesn't include all of those.
What if approached the power-that-be and present them with the idea of a disabled tablet where all of the drivers are removed? If they agree that is a solution you can then see about getting one of the Devs to build you the ROM as jtipton79 mentioned above.

I have a Samsung Epic (2.2, one click root), and from what I have read on this forum, apparently there are some phones where the Xoom and wifi tether don't like each other because of some sort of ad hoc protocol, whatever that means. My Evo was OK to tether, but the Epic/Galaxy no dice.
I downloaded the tether program here as recommended on another thread, but that didn't work either.
So basically I want to be able to wifi tether the Xoom to my Epic phone, the easiest way possible. I would even do a tether via USB cable if that is possible. If not, I think I would rather root the Xoom (if that is what I have to do) because I am more familiar with rooting than playing with ROMs.

Yes, you can usb tether, but I'm not certain about the requirements.
There's also a way to get ad hoc working on the Xoom.

I haven't really searched for a USB tether option as I didn't think it could be done but now I will search for that too.
