Greetings all.
First off, I have used this forum extensively for work on my droid razr and love the work you all do. Thanks for all the passive advice I have received. I have been trying to root my asus slider SL101 for some time now and have been hung up on the fact that I cannot connect my tablet to my PC. I am running windows 7 on an HP laptop and have tried the following to connect the slider to it. I am running ICS 4.0.3 with build 9.2.1.27 on my tablet. When I plug my usb charger/cord into the laptop from the charger port on the tablet, I get an error message from windows saying the device is unrecognized and has malfunctioned.
1. installed the asus sync desktop software x 3
2. Manually downloaded the usb driver for my tablet from their website and installed
3. Performed a factory reset on the tablet
4. Performed a complete system wipe ( by going into boot menu and pressing volume down, then up up. etc...)
5. Called the Asus support hotline and discussed prior interventions with no success. They recommended if another full system wipe from boot menu didn't help then they would have to have it sent in to look at it.
None of these have solved the problem, so my question is (1) if anybody knows a possible solution that I haven't tried? I have found similar problems on the forums with no success with updating windows media player, installing asus sync, etc... ( as I don't want to send it off for a month minimum because I need this tablet for school), and (2) Is there a way to root the slider without a pc? I have flash drives and online sync for transferring files, I really only need the pc for root. Any help that anybody can give me is GREATLY appreciated. I think I have exhausted all the forums I can find on the SL101 (which is actually quite limited). Thanks in advance!
I rooted my SL101 running Honeycomb and I had no trouble with drivers on Windows 7.
However, I do remember someone saying that PC connection and driver issues might be easier on Ubuntu.
I seem to remember I had trouble with my USB drivers too on my slider. I suggest you google for ADB drivers. I did a quick google and found this, hopefully it works for you.

You may think you'll not need your PC, but if you brick your slider you'll be glad you have PC connectivity, I just came out of a b!t# of a brick with some assistance from really smart (and helpful) people on various forums but I couldn't have done it without ADB.

Hey volan1,
Would you mind telling us how you bricked your Slider and also the steps you took to unbrick it?
The Slider owners are so few in number and with the lack of NvFlash for our device, it really makes it hard to find help and resources to use.
I tried the Ubuntu route with no success yet, thanks for the suggestion though! I am going to try the adb drivers suggested and let you know how it goes! Thanks for all your help guys! And I agree, the SL101 group is very small! Any targeted forums or sites for ROMs or help that you know of would be a great help!

Well, I tried all the driver tricks and ubuntu and about everything else I can find to try to get my Sl101 to connect to my laptop... I called ASUS again with (surprise surprise) no help. I can use the usb sync/charge cable to charge the tablet from the wall, but no usb at all. So, I guess I will be sending it in to ASUS to be looked at. Thanks for all of your suggestions all!

Thanks! But, you aren't going to believe this (because I really don't), but I had the tablet and original box all together and ready to ship out this afternoon to ASUS when I ran across a factory charger and usb cable at Office Depot. I decided "what the hell" may as well try a different cable, since it is literally the only thing I haven't changed or replaced trying to get this to work.... and it worked... I purchased the exact same Asus brand cable that I already have from original purchase and still works in all other applications, but for some reason this new cable works for usb interface with my computer where the other did not.... omg so much time/effort wasted!! I'm still having trouble with asus sync, but it is no worry as my laptop recognizes the tablet and I can browse files, etc... Thanks for all the help!
P.S. Anybody know of a good SL101 rom forum? Theres some transformer forums and here, just curious to see where everyone goes for this device Also, what's your favorite ROM with cornerstone?

Well, I'd say XDA is still the best place to go for ROMs and support. At least for ICS ROMs, there's the keyboard compatibility pack for us to use with the TF101 ROMs.

I would agree. XDA is the "bible" of information the vast majority of the time. However, I have found pockets of devs on some niche websites. I am going to work on a compatibility pack for the newer JB roms and SL101 from TF101 builds.

Some time in the last 2 or 3 ROM flashes, my usb port has quit communicating. It will charge the phone, but never so much as gives me the usb connected tone on the pc. have tried numerous pcs that have worked in the past, 3 different cables that all have worked before, reinstalled drivers, tried adb, kies, odin, and mass storage to no avail. I have checked and unchecked debugging. Currently running MIUI, but was on phidelt82's EC10 combo rom before that with the same result. Anything I may be missing? I have run out of ideas, and none of what I am finding by searching seems to be helping.

I went to settings then USB settings and changed my option to ask everytime. Now when I plug phone to usb cable the phone screen comes up to select media or mass, I select mass and the computer sees it.
No dice. Not sure what else to try, can't go back to stock, acts as if my usb port is charge only.

Anyone have a package to get me back close to stock with clockwork (cant use Odin obviously) so I can take the phone in for a replacement?.
This is why you should back up your phone before flashing.
Thanks so much for your kind and helpful words. As it stands, I did back it up in Clockwork, but the phone will not read the backup now. At what point did these forums change from a place of information sharing and learning to a troll haven full of "Noob bashers"?
I had those same problems and I could never get my phone to recognize but I found one computer and xp machine that odin saw and I got it to work but my USB still doesnt work on any other pc (Weird). So just keep trying diff computers maybe it my show up
Thanks for the tip, will see what I can come up with

No one is bashing anybody. Maybe you need to change the way you interpret things. If you'd reread your original post, you'll see you never said you made a backup and couldn't restore it. I was making a legitimate point to make sure in the future you made backups. I had no way of knowing you had.
Point is, my comment was legitimate; I was not bashing you, so don't be so quick to interpret things people say in the most negative connotation as possible.
Sorry, add, I too fell victim to your "hard" tone in many of your replies around the forums. I apologize for being quick to the trigger, as I can see where you are coming from in the piles of questions daily from folks who have never even thought to back up before flashing. As it turns out, I gave it a quick bricking, and a replacement with working usb is on the way. Pretty sure it was a hardware issue, as it was working one minute and gone the next with no changes to the phone.
Hey guys
First let me say that I did try to look around the forums, but did not find anything relevant .. the search tool really isn't that great.
My parents, in all their wisdom, decided to go ahead and buy two "generic" android tablets whilst I was away at uni without asking for my advice.
Now had I known, I would have told them to stay the hell away from them, unfortunately I am now left with two annoying adults wanting me to make their tablets faster and better.
I am a pretty good programmer and am doing computer science at Uni, so I though i might try to root/flash a custom ROM onto those tablets myself (i know nobody else will ever do it). However I have never touched anything 'android dev' related (apart from obviously rooting and flashing my own HTC Desire) so I really have no idea about where to start.
This is where you lovely people come in: I would be oh so grateful if someone could put me in the right direction as to whatI should be looking into in order to root, and eventually flash a rom onto a new device that no other dev has ever touched before. I'm guessing that if people are doing it for mainstream devices, its entirely possible to do on the tablets I have, I just need to know where to start looking.
Thanks a bunch in advance guys, please don't be to harsh on me <3
I do not know if this will help you or not, but I also am trying to flash a ROM for a "generic" android device. Given that mine is a phone and not a tablet, I do not know if this would work for you or not therefore I'd recommend doing prior research; however, I was able to root my device using the z4root app.
As far as I know, the next step would be installing a recovery (such as clockwork recovery in ROM Manager) in case something goes wrong. I'm not certain about how one would go about porting that software, but their are instructions posted on the developer's website. I don't know enough about the process so I can't really give anymore input; however, if you find any other information, be sure to let me know as well
definitely will thanks!
I've got one problem with one of the tablets already .. it never came with a usb cable, and does not have a micro usb, min usb or anything that I may know as a port, it only has some kind of proprietary port that strangely looks like an iPod/iPhone/iPad port but I can't be sure as I do not own an ipodcable to try it out .. is it in any way possible that a generic tablet could have an apple connector on it?

I can just tell you from my experience using a Ciphone Pro (IP4 knock-off running android). It came with a cable that looks very similar to an iphone cable (my girlfriend and I cannot tell the difference between them). I can plug my phone into either my cable or her Iphone 3GS cable to charge; however, when she once plugged her phone into my cable, her Iphone said the charge was not compatible. Because the android phone didn't display any prompts when connected to the iphone adapter, I assume that these generic devices are compatible with it. I hope this helps, but you could also check all of the iphone cables you have lying around because maybe one of them actually came with the device

One thing that I've noticed is that there are quite a few "generics" out there that are actually rebadged versions of each other. If your tablets are one, then if you can find the line of tablets that they belong to, then you might be able to find a development community behind that line of tablets. If that's the case, then there might already be recoveries/roms available for you to flash onto these tablets. I'm not sure of a great resource but androidforums.net might help.

I would like to marry you Sir. Thanks to your advice I looked around, using the generic pads specifications, and ended up finding out that they were just "rebranded" flytouch epad. From there, I was able to find compatible ROMs for both tablets on http://www.slatedroid.com/ and http://techknow.freeforums.org.
I know have root, google apps and a nice speed increase on both of'em

Might I ask how you came to this conclusion? I'm trying to see if I can install custom ROMs on my phone and I believe that it is more than likely that there is a compatible version floating around somewhere. I'm not exactly sure what I should be searching for, so if you have any pointers it would be greatly appreciated

All I did was look at the specs of my device (ram, processor, screen size and internal memory being the big ones) and just tried to look for any other device with the same specs. It took a lot of googleing though, so be ready to search through useless search results for a while.

Awesome! I'm glad you were able to find what you were looking for. I must, however, decline the offer as I am already married and polygamy is illegal here.
I have a Sprint Nexus S 4G that I've recently rendered without service or USB connection as a result of a fastboot accident. I'm currently running ICS 4.0.3 (Dooderbutt-aosp-v-5 build), but have tried restoring multiple backups on CM7 to no avail. Wiping all user data in CWM doesn't fix it either. I have also tried flashing the LC1 radio zip with no results.
The way I see it, my two best courses of action would either be to try and return to a stock ROM so that I can send the device in under warranty or to continue to try to fix it myself, which has been less than successful so far. Every process I have found online to return to stock seems to end in fastboot oem lock, which won't do anything for me as my phone doesn't show up in fastboot devices, file explorer, or seem to be recognized by my computer in either Ubuntu or Win 7. I've tried connecting on my friends' computers with the same results. I've also tried using another USB cable. No dice.
Sorry if I missed something obvious before posting. I tried to do a lot of research online and have reached the end of what I know what to do. Any suggestions?
Bump.
After some more researching, it appears that there is no way to lock the bootloader except through USB connection with a computer. Does this mean I'm out of luck? Any suggestions as to how to solve this issue? Since my first post, I've flashed ICS 4.0.4 with no improvement on the above symptoms. Also, auto-rotation doesn't seem to work. My Baseband version in About is listed as Unknown. Does anyone have any clue? Replies would be greatly appreciated.
have you updated the android drivers on your computer? you wont be able to connect to fastboot without the drivers. you can get it here http://www.junefabrics.com/android/ do the free download(on your computer) then follow the on screen instructions.

I'm running Ubuntu, so from what I understand, I don't need any drivers. Prior to this fiasco, my computer recognized it as a storage device in the file system as well as a device in fastboot. It doesn't come up as either now.
I had a similar problem after I updated to ICS 4.0.3, what version of Ubuntu do you have, and does the device show up when you run lsusb?
Also, have you checked inside the usb connector to see if one of the pins is bent or damaged?
I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 and no, my Nexus doesn't show up in lsusb or anything else I seem to try. I have checked the pins in the connector of the phone and even bent them around a little bit, but I doubt that's the problem. Since it disappeared immediately after a bad flash, I'm fairly confident this is a software-induced error.
Ok, the only other thing I can think of is a bad kernel or baseband, but since you've tried several different roms, I don't think that's the problem (unless you put on one that's not for your model).
Sorry I can't be more helpful, hope you figure it out!
Thanks for your help anyway. To be clear, each rom has its own kernel and baseband, correct? Are those things I can flash independently of roms like the radio?
Found something, not sure if you've seen it already : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1077168
This bit is especially interesting :
"*If your having problems after the radio flash......go to dialer:
Type in *#*#72786#*#*, put your msl in, and let it re-provision"
For the usb not connecting, I had the same problem. After trying every computer in the house, I grabbed a can of compressed air for electronics and blew out my micro usb port on the phone itself. There was a small piece of lint in there that was causing the connection to not be made. It's worth a try.

I'm attempting to try this work around, but I can't seem to find my msl. I've tried putting in an incorrect code and checking alogcat for it as well as the terminal output of getprop. Neither of these give me the number. Sprint mentions using this code for resetting your phone in this tutorial, but I can't for the life of me find the part of their site that shows the msl.
This is exhausting. I really appreciate all your guys' help though. Thanks so much.
Unfortunately, I never figured out how to solve the problem. I took my phone into Sprint the other day and lucked out on the repair technician. He was messing around trying stuff and had a moment of realization when he booted into Clockworkmod. Even though I had voided my warranty, he still let me replace the phone for the $35 fee. I walked out with a brand new Photon 4G. I'm so happy, it's like Christmas in May!
To others who have this problem: sorry, but I don't know what to tell you! Mine was probably bricked. The MSL number didn't connect the phone and neither did anything else I tried. Best of luck to you.
It doesn't natively work on the Infinity, but I'm stubborn. If anyone can give me some direction as to how best to tackle this, it would be helpful. Maybe someone else had already started on something similar, or if not, at least a starting point.
Mind you, I'm trying to tether FROM my Sprint phone TO my tablet.

Have you tried connecting your Sprint phone via bluetooth? I noticed that when I paired mine, it showed up as a possible tether point but I don't have data on my plan so couldn't test it.
I also think this thread needs to be moved to the Q&A forum.
I doubt you'll get it working through USB. I dont think the Infinity has drivers for that.
There's tons of solutions to get it going over wifi, and if you want something a little more power efficient try a combination of PDANet for Tablets on the Infinity and FoxFi on your phone to tether over bluetooth.
Sigh... the entire point to this thread being in the Development forum is to develop the drivers needed to make it work.

Unfortunately, unless you have already developed such app, this post does not belong in the development forums, which are for apps/ROMs that have already been developed, not for posts about apps/ROMs that you would like to have developed.

Already posted in Q&A. Pretty much the sames answers you received there. Dude, just wifi/BT tether... No one is gonna hack the wireless network on your phone to get free 4G internet.
Obviously I need to go elsewhere, then. I thought this would be good place to go for aid with app development, and instead all I get is 'you're dumb, do it this way' and 'Development is for apps already developed, not for those in development' as seems to be the case. Thanks anyway, I suppose.
Not trying to give you a hard time and certainly didn't mean to insinuate you're dumb. You're just asking for something that doesn't really NEED to be done and really can't be done (at the moment). There are already lots of good solutions for what you're ultimately looking to do, tether your phone to your tablet to access the net. Being stubborn about doing it via USB just doesn't make sense (unless you're not really being honest about wanting simple internet access and you need USB tether for other reasons). Who would want wires when you can do it wirelessly? Wires suck... lol.
Hopefully you'll stick around and enjoy the community. Lots of smart nice people here ready to lend a hand.
Grave digging
I've found a need for this or at least a work around. I work offshore and internet is restricted to 1 device per person. My tablet cannot tether back to my PC but my mobile can. I can usb tether my phone to my PC while on wifi. However you cannot bluetooth tether while on wifi so my tablet becomes useless. Please if you're thinking I should just bluetooth or wifi tether using my data I will ask you to log off life and KYS because as I said earlier I work offshore there is no data. Is there a way to bluetooth tether while on wifi??

It does have the drivers for it, but it requires a change in the framework to allow it to use the USB device when you plug it in. I have this enabled in cm.

Hi,
I just received my phone, and have a couple of total newbie questions. I have never had an android phone, but, have an unlocked android tablet for my daughter. I unlocked it with info from this site. Awesome help!! I couldn`t have done it without you. Needed a new phone, and couldn`t afford the home prices or contracts for the iphones, galaxies, etc, so went for the Jiayu G3. Just started using mine, but and having problem getting windows 7 computer to recognize the device. The screen looks great and so far, it seems nice, but I am not a phone tech. I`m more of a desperate user, willing to learn and try...with direction from someone with experience.
Has anyone else had a problem with this phone being recognized, I guess as a mass storage device, and is there some solution that someone can help me with?
Also, wondering whether or not to unlock the phone, once the first problem is solved. I don`t know too much about the benefit of the unlock in this case. Can someone share info on that? I SAID I`m a newbie, sorry.
Is there any must have software that any of you more experienced users recommend for this phone?
Does ANYONE know where I can find info on it in English, so that I can figure out what I`m pressing?
Seriously....Thank you!

Are you still having problems connecting as mass storage as i just plugged mine into my sons windows 7 pc and it installed drivers straight away. Whe you connect to pc does usb connected not show on screen and a turn on usb storage button not appear. If not then when you plug in the cable swipe down from the top of the phone to see the notification area. One of the notifications should read Connected As USB Storage Touch for other usb options. Now yours might say media device or camera (ptp) just push that button and you should be taked to a screen with 3 choices, usb storage-media device-camera(ptp) select usb storage and if drivers do not start to install pull out cable and plug in again and hit connect as usb staorage and then OK. Hope this helps, I have mine rooted but I would not bother as there is going to be an Jelly Bean update released if you root you won't get the over the air update or might even fail and download and manual update. Phone works great just as it is.
hello all! if you have a problem driver download PDANET install it on the PC and connect your phone. install the drivers it must be!
